Use the Photos app’s own controls rather than deleting files. To remove screenshots from the everyday Library view, open Photos and choose Sort and Filter > View Options > Screenshots; tap Screenshots again to restore them. To conceal downloaded images or any selected photos, select them, tap More, and choose Hide. The items move to the locked Hidden collection. For extra discretion, go to Settings > Apps > Photos and turn off Show Hidden Album. Hiding is reversible, while deleting sends items to Recently Deleted. If iCloud Photos is enabled, the hidden status follows the same Apple Account to your other Apple devices.
What is the difference between filtering screenshots and hiding photos?
Filtering screenshots changes what appears in the main Library without moving or deleting the files. Hiding a photo moves it into the Hidden collection so it no longer appears throughout the normal Photos interface. Choose the first option for a cleaner library; choose the second when another person using the device should not casually see the image.

How do I remove screenshots from the iPhone Photo Library without deleting them?
Use the Screenshots view option in Photos. This is a library-display control, so it leaves every screenshot on the iPhone and does not put it behind the Hidden collection’s authentication.

Photos immediately removes screenshots from the normal Library display. To show them again, repeat the path and tap Screenshots a second time. The control is reversible and does not alter the original files, dates, edits, albums, or storage.

When is this the right choice?
Use this option when screenshots are cluttering the chronological Library but do not need to be private. It is useful for receipts, temporary instructions, conversation captures, and other screen grabs that you want to retain but do not want mixed into the everyday camera roll.
Can I find screenshots before hiding selected ones?
Yes. Photos also provides a Media Types filter that can temporarily show only screenshots. Use that filtered view to select particular screenshots, then apply another action such as Hide. The Media Types filter itself does not conceal anything; it only narrows what you see while choosing items.
How do I hide downloaded images and other selected photos?
Select the images in Photos, then use the More menu’s Hide command. Downloaded pictures saved from a browser, message, mail attachment, or another app can be handled in the same way as camera photos once they are in your Photos library.
- Open Photos and navigate to the Library or the collection containing the images.
- Tap Select.
- Tap each downloaded image or other photo you want to conceal.
- Tap the More button.
- Choose Hide.
- Confirm if Photos asks you to confirm the move.
The selected items move to Hidden. Apple describes the result this way: “When you hide photos and videos, they move to the Hidden album, so they don’t appear anywhere else in Photos.” That includes the Library, other albums, and the Photos widget. Hiding does not create a duplicate, reduce image quality, or remove the file from your photo library.
Can I hide several downloads at once?
Yes. Use Select and mark all of the images in the batch before opening More and choosing Hide. Review the selected thumbnails first, especially if you are selecting from a mixed album, because Hide applies to every item selected.
What happens to an image after I hide it?
It is no longer displayed in the ordinary Photos views. It remains in the Hidden collection, where it can be viewed after authentication and returned to the visible library with Unhide. Edits and the original item remain associated with the photo.

How do I make the Hidden album disappear from Photos?
Turn off the Show Hidden Album setting. The photos stay hidden; only the collection’s normal entry point is removed from the Photos interface.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Photos.
- Turn off Show Hidden Album.
When the setting is off, Hidden is not shown in the usual Photos collection list. To access your concealed items later, return to the same setting and turn Show Hidden Album back on. This setting is a discoverability control, not a second copy or a deletion command: the hidden files remain in your library.
Is turning off Show Hidden Album a permanent lock?
No. Anyone who can unlock the iPhone and change Photos settings can turn the setting back on. The stronger barrier is the authentication required to open Hidden; disabling the album’s visibility mainly prevents accidental discovery in the Photos interface.
How are hidden photos protected and recovered?
Hidden and Recently Deleted are locked by default. Opening either collection requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode, depending on what the device supports and which authentication method is available.
Open the Hidden collection
- Open Photos and go to Collections.
- Under Utilities, open Hidden.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
If Show Hidden Album is disabled, enable it first in Settings > Apps > Photos. Once the collection is visible and unlocked, you can inspect the concealed photos without making them visible in the main Library.
Unhide a photo
- Open Hidden under Utilities and authenticate.
- Tap Select and choose the item or items.
- Use the available action to Unhide them.
Unhiding returns the photos to the ordinary Photos views. It does not make a separate copy, and it does not change the fact that the files are part of the library.

Should I hide a photo or delete it?
Hide an item when you want to keep it but remove it from normal viewing. Delete it only when you intend to remove it from the library.
- Choose Hide for privacy, decluttering, or temporary concealment. The item remains available in Hidden and can be restored with Unhide.
- Choose Delete when you no longer want the file. Deleted photos move to Recently Deleted, where Apple says they remain for 30 days before permanent removal from the iPhone, iCloud, and associated devices.
These actions solve different problems. Deleting a screenshot simply to keep it out of view risks losing it after the recovery period; filtering or hiding preserves it.
What happens when iCloud Photos is turned on?
Hiding is not a device-only privacy setting for an iCloud-synced library. When iCloud Photos is enabled, a photo hidden on one device is hidden on the user’s other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
That synchronization keeps the library’s organization consistent across an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It also means that a photo hidden on the iPhone may be available in the Hidden collection on another signed-in device after that device synchronizes. Apply the same authentication and Show Hidden Album considerations on every device where the library is accessible.
What if I want a photo hidden on only this iPhone?
The Photos Hide command does not provide a per-device-only state when iCloud Photos is syncing the library. If you need different visibility on separate devices, do not assume that hiding on the iPhone leaves the item visible elsewhere; the hidden status is designed to synchronize with the same Apple Account.
What should I do if screenshots still appear?
First determine whether you filtered the Library or hid individual files. The Screenshots view option removes screenshots from the Library display, while Hide moves selected items to Hidden. They are separate controls.

- If you want all screenshots absent from the ordinary Library, return to Sort and Filter > View Options and make sure Screenshots is selected.
- If one or more screenshots must be protected, select those files and use More > Hide.
- If a hidden item seems missing, open Collections > Utilities > Hidden and authenticate. If Show Hidden Album is off, turn it on in Settings first.
Remember that a Library filter is not a privacy barrier. Someone who changes the view option can see the screenshots again, whereas a hidden item requires authentication to open the Hidden collection.

Why can’t I find the Hide command?
Hide appears after you select one or more items and open the More menu. In Photos, go to the Library or an applicable collection, tap Select, mark the photos, and then tap More. Looking at a single photo without entering selection mode can leave the command out of sight.
Apple changes interface placement between iOS releases, so the icon’s appearance can differ. The functional sequence remains: select the item, open More, choose Hide, and confirm. If you are trying to conceal screenshots as a group, use the Media Types filter to locate them first.
Do screenshot settings in General hide existing screenshots?
No. Settings > General > Screen Capture controls screenshot behavior such as the preview style, Visual Look Up, CarPlay screenshots, and SDR/HDR capture format. Those controls do not remove existing screenshots from Photos.
Use Photos’ Sort and Filter > View Options > Screenshots to change their Library visibility, or select the existing files and choose Hide when you need them moved to the authenticated Hidden collection.

What are the important privacy limits?
Hiding is designed to keep items out of normal Photos views, not to make them irrecoverable or invisible to every person who can use the device. A person who knows the device passcode may be able to authenticate, enable Show Hidden Album, and open Hidden. On iCloud Photos, the same consideration applies to every signed-in device that can unlock the library.

For that reason, use a strong device passcode and keep Face ID or Touch ID enabled if your device supports it. Check which Apple devices are signed in to the same Apple Account before assuming that a hidden download exists only on this iPhone. If your goal is permanent removal rather than privacy, use Delete and observe the Recently Deleted recovery period.

Where did my hidden photos go on my iPhone?

Can I hide screenshots automatically as soon as I take them?
The documented Photos controls are manual: filter screenshots from the Library or select items and use Hide. The Screen Capture settings change capture behavior and formats, but they do not automatically place new screenshots in Hidden.

Yes. Hiding changes where the photo appears in Photos; it does not delete the file. It continues to occupy storage and, when iCloud Photos is enabled, remains part of the synchronized photo library.
Can someone see hidden photos in the Photos widget?
Hidden items are excluded from the Photos widget along with the Library and other albums. They can still be reached by someone who unlocks the device, enables the Hidden collection, and passes its authentication check.
What is the safest way to recover a photo I accidentally deleted instead of hiding?
Open Photos, go to Collections > Utilities > Recently Deleted, authenticate, select the item, and use the recovery command before Apple’s 30-day retention period expires. After permanent removal, it is no longer recoverable through Photos.
