To give an AI agent a complete webpage image, connect the official Playwright MCP server, let the agent navigate to the page, and call browser_take_screenshot with fullPage: true. The option captures the entire scrollable document rather than only the current viewport. Use an accessibility snapshot first when the agent must find buttons or other controls; use the screenshot afterward for visual inspection, charts, canvas content, or a record of the rendered page.

What do you need before capturing a full page?
You need Node.js 20 or newer, an MCP-compatible client, and a client configuration that can start the Playwright MCP package with npx. The browser runs in the environment where that MCP server is launched, so that machine must be able to reach the target URL.
- Node.js: version 20 or newer.
- MCP client: an application that can load an MCP server and expose its tools to your agent.
- Network access: outbound access to the website you intend to capture.
- Writable output: required if you ask the tool to save a file with
filename.
Use the smallest capability set that meets your task. Playwright documents optional groups for vision, PDF, devtools, network, storage, and testing; enabling only what the agent needs reduces the number of tools it must choose from and can lower token use.

How do you configure the Playwright MCP server?
Add the server to your MCP client’s configuration. A standard local entry uses npx to run the current package:

Should you pin a package version?
The example uses @latest, which follows the current package release. For a reproducible production workflow, replace it with a version you have validated and update it deliberately; this prevents an unattended package update from changing tool behavior.
When should you enable extra capabilities?
Start with the core browser tools. Add a capability group only when the agent needs it—for example, vision for image-oriented workflows, PDF for document output, or network and storage for controlled request and session handling. A smaller tool surface makes tool selection easier.
How do you capture the entire scrollable page?
After the MCP server is connected, the agent’s sequence is simple: navigate, inspect if necessary, then take a full-page screenshot.
- Navigate to the target URL. Use the browser navigation tool exposed by your MCP client and wait for the page to finish the load conditions appropriate to the site.
- Take an accessibility snapshot when interaction is required. The structured snapshot gives the agent headings, links, buttons, form controls, and references it can use for actions such as dismissing a dialog or opening a menu.

What does fullPage include?
It captures the full scrollable page, not just the viewport currently visible in the browser. It is intended for a complete visual record of the rendered document. If you need one component instead, use an element target in a separate screenshot call and leave fullPage off.
How should the agent use snapshots and screenshots together?
Use browser_snapshot to understand structure and obtain references for interaction. Use browser_take_screenshot to look at the result. Screenshots are for visual verification, not for supplying interaction references; asking an agent to click based only on pixels is less reliable than using the structured snapshot.
Which screenshot format and scale should you choose?
Playwright MCP supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Choose based on whether fidelity, file size, or compatibility matters:

Use scale: "css" for routine agent context. Switch to scale: "device" when small text or visual details must remain legible at high resolution. Use JPEG when transfer size matters more than pixel-perfect edges.
How do you handle pages that need interaction before capture?
Take a snapshot, identify the control, perform the action through its structured reference, and then capture the page. This is safer than trying to infer a click location from a screenshot.

Cookie dialogs, menus, and gated content
If a consent dialog blocks content, use the snapshot to find its accept, reject, or close control. If a navigation menu or accordion hides content, activate it before the final screenshot. If access requires authentication, provide credentials only through the MCP client’s supported secure mechanism and confirm that the resulting image does not expose private data.

Waiting for dynamic content
Do not capture immediately after navigation when the page renders asynchronously. Wait for the page state your workflow requires—for example, after a known control appears or after client-side rendering completes. If the page continually changes, capture only after the agent reaches a defined stable state so repeated runs are comparable.
Full page versus a specific element
Use fullPage: true for the complete scrollable document. For a card, chart, or component, make a separate element-targeted screenshot; the full-page option cannot be combined with an element target.
What is the difference between a local and a remote MCP browser?
A local server launches the browser on your machine or runner. A managed remote service launches it in a hosted workspace and exposes the MCP connection over Streamable HTTP. The choice affects infrastructure, data handling, latency, and operational control.

Use local execution when you need control over data, browser versions, or network routing. A managed workspace is useful when your agent cannot host a browser, but treat preview services as changeable and verify their current availability before building a critical workflow around them.
What commonly goes wrong, and how do you fix it?
The Playwright tools do not appear
Cause: the MCP client has not reloaded the configuration, Node.js is too old, or npx cannot install the package. Fix: verify Node.js is 20 or newer, check the JSON for valid commas and quotation marks, restart the client, and run the configured command in a terminal to expose installation errors.
The screenshot shows only the viewport
Cause: fullPage was omitted or set to false. Fix: send fullPage: true in the screenshot call and do not include an element target.

The agent cannot click or identify a control
Cause: it is attempting to act from the image. Fix: call browser_snapshot, use the returned structured references for the interaction, and take a new screenshot after the state changes.

Cause: the filename points to a location the MCP server cannot write, or the client returned the image inline instead. Fix: use a writable workspace-relative filename, inspect the tool response for an inline artifact, and confirm the server process has permission to write to the requested directory.
The page is blank, incomplete, or still loading
Cause: capture happened before client-side rendering, a required resource failed, or the site serves different content to automated browsers. Fix: wait for a meaningful page condition, inspect the snapshot for loaded content, check network access from the browser host, and retry after the page reaches a stable state. If the site presents a bot check or CAPTCHA, do not attempt to bypass it; use an authorized access path.
The output is too large for the agent context
Cause: a very long page combined with device-scale output and a lossless format creates a large artifact. Fix: use CSS scale, choose JPEG where acceptable, save the image as a file instead of embedding it inline, or capture a relevant element separately.
Lazy-loaded sections are absent
Cause: the site loads images or sections only after scrolling or another trigger. Fix: interact with the page to trigger the content, wait for the required elements, verify them in a snapshot, and then request the full-page screenshot. A full-page flag does not guarantee that a site’s own lazy-loading code has already fetched every asset.

Define a repeatable capture contract: URL, viewport or device profile, color scheme, wait condition, format, scale, filename convention, and retention period. Keep those values constant when comparing page versions. Record the capture time and the page state that was intentionally established, especially for pages with rotating banners or personalized content.
- Stability: wait for a meaningful selector or settled application state rather than relying only on elapsed time.
- Determinism: use the same viewport, scale, and format for every run.
- Artifact handling: save files when a later process must inspect them; return inline images only when the agent needs immediate visual context.
- Security: avoid putting credentials in prompts or filenames, and treat screenshots as potentially sensitive records.
- Cost control: resize or compress outputs for routine checks, and reserve device-scale PNGs for cases that require them.
