Give an AI coding agent a compact map of your repository, clear task boundaries and explicit acceptance checks; then let focused search retrieve the files and symbols needed for that task. Do not paste the whole codebase into the prompt. Keep instructions short and scoped, exclude generated and noisy paths, expose only the tools the task requires, and split unrelated work into separate sessions or subtasks. This approach gives the agent enough architecture to make safe decisions while preserving context for the code that actually matters.

An agent can reason only over the material in its current context: conversation messages, workspace files, instruction files, references and tool output. The goal is therefore not maximum volume. It is high-signal context assembled in stages.

What repository context does an AI coding agent actually use?

An agent builds its working context from several streams rather than from a single prompt. These usually include the conversation, files it can access in the workspace, project instructions, referenced documentation and the results of search or command-line tools. Anything outside the current context window is not available to its reasoning, even if it exists somewhere in the repository.

That distinction explains why dumping a repository often makes results worse. A large paste consumes room that could have held the failing test, the relevant interface, a configuration rule or the call site that defines the real behavior. Noise also increases the chance that an agent follows an obsolete example, edits generated output or mistakes a similarly named module for the one used in production.

Context should be treated as a staged retrieval problem:

  • Orient: provide a small project map and the task’s constraints.
  • Locate: use semantic, symbol-aware or text search to find likely definitions, tests and call sites.
  • Verify: expand from snippets to complete files only when dependencies or surrounding logic require it.
  • Act: make the smallest change that satisfies the acceptance checks.

Microsoft Visual Studio Code documentation describes the same principle in practical terms: you do not need to identify every relevant file before starting. Grounding should narrow the search space, not preload every available source.

How do I define a task so the agent knows when to stop?

Start with an outcome, boundaries and a stopping condition. A request such as “improve authentication” invites an agent to inspect too much and make assumptions. A request such as “add refresh-token rotation to the API service, preserve the existing response shape, update integration tests, and stop when the listed checks pass” gives it a finite search and editing target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State the desired change

Name the behavior, component or user-visible result. Include the relevant service or package if you know it, but do not guess at file names when you do not. Explain what must remain compatible, such as a public API, database schema, command-line interface or serialized format.

List constraints and non-goals

Constraints prevent scope drift. Mention supported runtimes, style rules, migration limits, performance requirements, security conditions and files that must not be changed. Add non-goals when a nearby improvement is tempting but out of scope: for example, “do not refactor the entire error layer” or “do not alter generated clients.”

Write observable acceptance checks

Define what “done” means in terms the agent can verify. Checks might include a specific unit-test command, an API response, a type-check result, a migration dry run or a manual reproduction that must no longer fail. If a test is intentionally unavailable, say what evidence should replace it, such as a focused static check and a documented limitation.

Use a compact task brief

Goal: Reject expired access tokens and rotate refresh tokens in the API service.
Constraints: Keep the existing JSON response fields; do not change database tables; follow the service's error format.
Acceptance: Add or update focused tests, run the API test target and type checker, and report any unrun checks.

This brief gives the agent a decision rule before it begins reading code. It also makes review easier because the final diff can be compared with an explicit contract.

What should go in AGENTS.md or equivalent project instructions?

An instruction file should orient an agent, not reproduce the repository. A useful file records architecture, boundaries, commands, test conventions and rules that are easy to miss by inspection. GitHub Docs notes that a maintained AGENTS.md or .github/copilot-instructions.md gives agents a structural overview so they do not have to read large numbers of files simply to get oriented.

Include information that is stable and non-obvious

  • Architecture: the purpose of major applications, packages or services and how requests or data move between them.
  • Module boundaries: which package owns a responsibility and which layers may call one another.
  • Entry points: where a web route, worker, command or library public API is defined.
  • Commands: the canonical install, build, lint, type-check, unit-test and integration-test commands, including required working directories.
  • Test conventions: naming, fixture setup, required environment variables and whether tests use a real service, container or mock.
  • Non-obvious rules: generated-file policy, migration workflow, security restrictions, compatibility promises and required review checks.

Leave out information the code already makes obvious

Do not paste ordinary function descriptions, complete dependency manifests or long style guides that duplicate formatter configuration. Such material increases maintenance cost and competes with task-specific context. If a rule can be enforced automatically, prefer the configuration or check that enforces it and mention only how the agent should invoke it.

Keep the file scannable

Use short sections and bullets. Put the most important constraints near the top. Link to local documents by path when they contain details, but avoid turning the instruction file into a directory listing. A project map should answer “where should I look first?” rather than “what exists everywhere?”

Example project-map outline

# Repository guide
## Layout
- apps/api: HTTP service and request validation
- packages/domain: business rules, no framework imports
- packages/db: migrations and persistence adapters
- generated/: checked-in generated output; edit the schema or generator, not these files
## Commands
- API tests: ...
- Type check: ...
## Rules
- Domain code must not import the HTTP layer.
- New database changes require a migration and rollback note.

The exact commands depend on the project; the important point is that the map records the repository’s conventions once instead of repeating them in every prompt.

How should I scope instructions to folders or languages?

Place broad rules at the repository root and narrower rules near the code they govern. A frontend task should not inherit unrelated backend deployment instructions, and a generated-code directory should not receive the same editing guidance as hand-written source.

Use a hierarchy

Root instructions can describe the overall architecture, universal commands and repository-wide safety rules. A service-level file can add API conventions, while a package-level file can define local test commands or import restrictions. The agent should be able to determine which rules apply from the path it is editing.

Resolve conflicts explicitly

State which instruction has priority when scopes overlap. For example, a root rule may require formatting everywhere, while a generated directory may require running a generator instead of formatting output directly. Clarify that the narrower rule governs that path.

Separate language-specific guidance

Put TypeScript, Python, Go or Java conventions close to the corresponding source trees unless they truly apply across the repository. This prevents a language-specific command or pattern from being selected for an unrelated component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scoped instructions also reduce maintenance. When a service changes its test runner, only its local guidance needs updating instead of a massive global document that every task loads.

How can search retrieve the right code without loading the whole repository?

Use search to move from concepts to symbols and then to the smallest complete set of files that explains the behavior. Semantic indexing can return relevant snippets without sending the entire workspace on every request, while symbol-aware and text search provide precise alternatives when names or strings are known.

  1. Start with the user-visible behavior. Search for the route, command, error text, configuration key or domain term named in the task.
  2. Find the definition. Identify the handler, class, function, schema or configuration declaration that owns the behavior.
  3. Find call sites and tests. Search for references to the symbol and for tests that assert its current contract.
  4. Trace one dependency edge at a time. Open the adapter, interface, serializer or fixture only when the definition leaves an ambiguity.
  5. Expand to full files selectively. Read the complete file when imports, lifecycle hooks, neighboring branches or local conventions affect a safe edit.
  6. Stop retrieving when the change is explainable. Once the agent can identify the owner, its callers, the contract and the verification command, more files are usually noise.

Google for Developers recommends a two-step retrieval pattern: let the agent begin with a focused document search, then fetch full documentation only when the initial result leaves an ambiguity. The same pattern works for source code.

Search terms that usually work

  • Exact error messages and response fields
  • Public class, function, route and event names
  • Configuration keys and environment-variable names
  • Database table or migration identifiers
  • Test descriptions and fixture names
  • Domain vocabulary from the acceptance criteria

When names are unknown, combine semantic search with a narrow path or file-type filter. When names are known, exact text or symbol references generally produce less distracting output than a broad semantic query.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which files should be included, and which should be excluded?

Include files that define the behavior, its contracts and its verification. Exclude paths that are generated, vendored, transient or unlikely to inform the decision. Exclusions are not merely a performance optimization; they prevent the agent from treating derivative or stale material as authoritative.

Path or material Default treatment Reason
Hand-written source for the target feature Include after search identifies it Contains the behavior being changed
Focused unit and integration tests Include Defines existing contracts and regression expectations
Interfaces, schemas and serializers Include when referenced Shows compatibility boundaries
Project instructions and local READMEs Include selectively Captures conventions not obvious from code
Build output and coverage reports Exclude Derivative, bulky and often stale
Generated clients, bundles and lock-independent artifacts Exclude from editing and broad search Change the source or generator instead
Vendored dependencies Exclude unless debugging the vendored code itself Usually not part of the change’s ownership boundary
Logs, caches and temporary files Exclude High volume and low signal
Large fixtures Retrieve only the relevant fixture or slice Full files can crowd out executable context

Configure these exclusions in the editor, indexing system or search command used by the agent. Also tell the agent not to edit generated output. If a generated file must change, identify the schema or generator command that is the source of truth and require regeneration as a verification step.

How many tools should an AI coding agent have enabled?

Enable the smallest tool set that can complete the task. A repository task may need file search, file reading, editing, a test runner and version-control status. It may not need a browser, deployment control, database administration or every available MCP server.

Match tools to the task

  • Navigation task: search, symbol lookup and file reading.
  • Implementation task: the navigation tools plus an editor and focused test commands.
  • Build or migration task: the implementation set plus the project’s build or migration tool, with explicit safety limits.
  • Documentation-only task: file reading and editing, with link or format checks if the repository uses them.

Why fewer tools help

Tool descriptions and outputs consume context, and a large menu makes selection less relevant. Limiting tools reduces accidental side effects and makes it easier to understand why a command was chosen. Keep destructive operations disabled unless the task truly requires them, and require confirmation or a dry run for production-affecting actions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Control command output

Ask for focused output: a failing test, a bounded diff, a directory listing at a useful depth or a filtered log range. Redirect or summarize repetitive output instead of returning an entire build transcript. If a command produces a large result, inspect the error section first and retrieve surrounding lines only as needed.

How do repository boundaries help in a monorepo?

Use multi-root workspaces or explicit service and folder boundaries so the agent starts with the component that owns the change. A monorepo may contain several applications, deployment targets and copies of similar utilities; presenting all of them at once makes accidental cross-service edits more likely.

Define ownership boundaries

Identify the service, package or workspace responsible for the behavior. State which neighboring packages are allowed dependencies and which are out of scope. If a shared library must change, make that a separate, explicit task or explain the dependency path and required compatibility checks.

Assign focused subtasks

Cross-cutting work is easier to review when divided into bounded activities, such as updating a domain interface, adapting one service and then adding integration coverage. Each session can receive the map and constraints for its own boundary, while a final review checks the combined contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for duplicate names

Search results in monorepos often contain similarly named routes, models or tests. Include the workspace path in the task brief and verify imports or package references before editing. A symbol’s name alone is not proof that it belongs to the active service.

How do I prevent a long session from overwhelming the agent?

Keep stable instructions early, remove irrelevant history and start a new session for unrelated work. Long conversations accumulate tool output, abandoned hypotheses and stale assumptions that compete with the current task.

Compact deliberately

Before continuing, record a short state summary: files changed, decisions made, checks run, failures remaining and constraints that still apply. Then continue from that summary rather than carrying every exploratory result forward.

Split unrelated work

Use a new session for a different feature, service or debugging question. Separate sessions improve isolation and make the final diff easier to attribute. They also let each task retrieve its own focused context instead of inheriting a broad history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep durable guidance stable

Put repository-wide rules in instruction files rather than rewriting them in every conversation. Stable early context can be reused efficiently where prompt caching is supported, while task-specific details remain small and current.

What does a two-step retrieval workflow look like in practice?

Two-step retrieval balances precision and coverage. The first pass gathers snippets that identify likely owners; the second pass retrieves complete documents only where the snippets cannot answer a concrete question.

Step one: retrieve focused snippets

Search for the behavior, symbol, test name or configuration key. Capture the matching lines and file paths, then compare them with the project map. At this stage, the agent should be forming hypotheses, not editing.

Step two: expand around an ambiguity

Fetch the full definition when you need imports, neighboring branches, lifecycle order or local error handling. Fetch a related interface or test when the contract is unclear. Do not expand simply because a file is nearby.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step three: verify cross-file effects

After identifying the edit, search for all call sites, serialized fields and tests that could be affected. This is where coverage matters: a narrowly retrieved starting point must still expand enough to catch dependencies.

Step four: edit and test within the boundary

Make the smallest coherent change, inspect the diff and run the focused checks from the instruction file. If a check fails for an unrelated reason, report that distinction instead of broadening the task automatically.

How should I choose between different context strategies?

Evaluate a strategy on precision, coverage, token cost and latency, maintenance and isolation. No single retrieval size is ideal for every repository or task; context requirements depend on the change and its dependency graph.

Strategy Precision Coverage Cost and latency Maintenance Best use
Paste the whole repository Low Superficially high Very high None initially, but poor repeatability Almost never; only tiny repositories may tolerate it
Project map plus manual file list High when the owner is known Can miss hidden callers Low to moderate Requires updating lists Small, well-bounded changes
Semantic or symbol-aware retrieval High for concept-driven tasks Can discover cross-file links Moderate and incremental Depends on index quality and exclusions Most feature and bug work
Broad path-scoped retrieval Moderate High within one service Moderate to high Simple boundaries Refactors that genuinely span a package
Separate sessions or subtasks High through isolation Requires explicit integration review Low per session, additional coordination Needs clear handoff notes Monorepos and unrelated work

Use the narrowest strategy that still exposes the dependency edges the task requires. If a bug crosses a service boundary, widen the retrieval deliberately and document why.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What common context mistakes cause poor agent results?

Most failures come from either too little orientation or too much undifferentiated material.

Dumping the entire codebase

This consumes context, increases retrieval noise and encourages the agent to imitate irrelevant patterns. Replace it with a map, exclusions and search-driven expansion.

Writing an instruction file as a second codebase

Long duplicated guidance becomes stale and contradictory. Keep durable rules, commands and boundaries; let the source remain the authority for ordinary implementation details.

Using global instructions for local rules

Backend, frontend and generated-code requirements can conflict. Scope them by folder or language and state precedence for overlaps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Including generated or vendored output

Agents may edit a derivative file or trust an obsolete artifact. Exclude those paths and point to the source-of-truth generator or schema.

Enabling every tool

A broad tool menu adds selection noise and risk. Enable only the search, editing and verification capabilities needed for the task.

Failing to define “done”

Without acceptance checks, an agent may stop after compiling, continue into an unrelated refactor or claim success without running the relevant tests. State the checks and require a report of anything not run.

Never refreshing the session

Stale hypotheses and accumulated output can distort later decisions. Compact the state or start a new session when the task changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a universal context size

There is no authoritative numeric threshold that works for every repository. A small configuration change and a cross-service migration have different context needs; measure sufficiency by whether the agent can explain ownership, dependencies, constraints and verification.

What is a practical setup for a new repository?

Use this sequence when introducing an agent to a repository for the first time.

  1. Create the root project map. Document major applications and packages, canonical commands, generated paths and repository-wide rules.
  2. Add scoped instruction files. Put service- or language-specific conventions close to the code they govern, with clear precedence.
  3. Configure exclusions. Omit build output, generated files, vendored dependencies, logs, caches and oversized fixtures from broad retrieval.
  4. Define the task contract. State the desired behavior, constraints, non-goals and acceptance checks before opening files.
  5. Start with search. Find the user-visible behavior, its definition, callers and focused tests.
  6. Expand only for unanswered questions. Retrieve full files and related interfaces when a snippet cannot establish the contract.
  7. Run bounded verification. Execute the focused test, lint, type-check or build commands documented for that component.
  8. Review the diff against the task. Check that edits stay within the stated boundary and that generated files were changed only through their source of truth.
  9. Record a handoff or reset. Summarize decisions and remaining failures before moving to another task or session.

This setup gives the agent enough structure to navigate independently while reserving most of its context for the code and evidence relevant to the current change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I put the entire README in every coding-agent prompt?

No. Keep durable repository orientation in the appropriate instruction file and include only the README section that answers the current task’s question. If the README is large, search it first and retrieve the relevant heading or command block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether the agent retrieved too little context?

Ask it to name the owning module, the callers or dependents it checked, the compatibility contract and the verification command before editing. Uncertainty about any of those points is a signal to expand retrieval, not to paste the whole repository.

Do exclusions ever hide code the agent needs?

They can, especially when a generated artifact is the only visible representation of a schema or API. Keep the path excluded from broad search, but document its source-of-truth file and the regeneration command so the agent can retrieve both when necessary.

Is semantic search enough for a security-sensitive change?

Use semantic search to find likely code, then perform explicit exact-name and call-site searches for authorization checks, serializers, configuration and tests. Security work usually warrants a wider dependency review and a clearly stated verification plan than a local bug fix.

When should two agents or sessions work on the same feature?

Split work when responsibilities have clear boundaries, such as a library contract and a service adapter, and require a final integration review. Keep tightly coupled edits in one session when separating them would make it harder to preserve ordering or shared invariants.
