Yes, you can give someone a Fanatical Steam game, but the safest supported route is to gift an eligible order through Fanatical before revealing any keys. If you already have an extra key from a multi-key bundle, Fanatical says you may pass that unused key to a friend. Copying a revealed key into a message is technically possible, but it gives up Fanatical’s official gift-order controls and most ordinary refund protection. A Steam store gift or Steam gift card can be a better fit when the recipient lives in another country or you want them to choose their own game.
What does it mean to gift a Fanatical Steam key?
There are three different things people mean by “gift a Fanatical key”: using Fanatical’s order-gifting feature, handing over an unused key left from a bundle, or copying a revealed serial from an order into email or chat. They are not equivalent. Fanatical’s current English guidance recommends sending qualifying orders through Fanatical; bundle extras can be shared as individual unused keys; and a revealed key is a one-time secret with no built-in way to take it back.
Fanatical sells digital serial keys that are redeemed on third-party platforms such as Steam. Its supported gift is an unrevealed order sent to the recipient, not a transfer of a game already activated in your own Steam library. Valve likewise says Steam subscriptions cannot be transferred except through paths it expressly permits. You cannot activate a game for yourself and then move that library copy to someone else.
For most eligible purchases, use Fanatical Order History to send the order as a gift, or select the gift option while buying. For a Steam game that Fanatical’s gift rules exclude, consider purchasing it through Steam or sending Steam Wallet funds instead.

What are the ways to give someone a Fanatical Steam game?
Choose the method based on whether you are buying now, gifting a qualifying completed order, or sharing a spare key. The table compares who controls the license, whether a gift can be recalled before acceptance, and the main risks.

The practical distinction is control. Fanatical and Steam gifting keep the purchase in their systems until the recipient accepts, while a copied key becomes visible to whoever receives or intercepts the message. A Steam gift card is useful when you do not know which game the person wants.
How do I gift a Fanatical order?
You can choose the gift option at checkout or send an eligible order afterward. In either case, the recipient claims the gift through Fanatical and reveals the keys in their own account.

Gift while placing the order
- Open the Fanatical cart and look for “Gift this order” in Cart Summary. If every item in the cart is ineligible for gifting, the option is disabled.
- Enter the recipient’s email address and your name. Add an optional message and choose when Fanatical should deliver the gift.
- Complete payment. An immediate gift email is sent after payment. A scheduled gift can be set up to one year ahead; Fanatical says scheduled emails are sent at 12PM GMT on the chosen day.
- The recipient follows the emailed gift link and creates a free Fanatical account if needed. Once they accept, the order appears in their Order History, where they can reveal the keys.
Gift an eligible completed order
- Go to Order History.
- Choose “View Order & Keys” for the purchase, then select “Gift This Order” if the order still qualifies.
- Enter the recipient’s email, your name, and an optional message, then send the gift.
Before acceptance, use Manage Gift Order to edit the gift details or revoke it. After acceptance, the recipient controls the order and its keys. Fanatical Customer Services’ article, updated 15 October 2026, puts the supported method plainly: “You can gift your fanatical.com orders to others through fanatical.com.”
Can I buy a game from a friend’s wishlist?
Yes. A friend can share a Fanatical wishlist, and shared lists appear under My Friends. Choose “Gift” on an eligible title to buy and send it. Wishlist gifting uses Fanatical’s gift process; it does not remove the product’s region or platform restrictions.
Which Fanatical orders cannot be gifted?
Fanatical’s gift rules exclude specific products and orders that are no longer in an eligible state. Check these conditions before purchasing if the recipient is the intended player.

- Any key already revealed: Starting to reveal keys associated with the order disables “Gift this order,” even if you have not sent the key to anyone.
- Older completed purchases: An order delivered more than 180 days ago cannot be gifted through this feature.
- Partly refunded orders: If any part of the order has already been refunded, the remaining order cannot be gifted.
- Region-locked products: A recipient abroad may not be able to activate the country-specific key supplied for the buyer.
- Account requirement: The recipient needs a Fanatical account, which they can create for free through the gift link.

Can I give away unused keys from a Fanatical bundle?
Yes, if the bundle delivered separate Steam keys and you have not redeemed the extra one. Fanatical’s answer, updated 13 September 2026, is: “Yes, if a bundle is delivered as multiple separate keys (we include a note in the bundle’s description if the whole bundle is delivered as a single key) you can pass on the individual Steam® keys to a friend to redeem.”
Check the bundle description for a note that the whole bundle is delivered as a single key. If it is one combined key, you cannot split out individual games to share. For a multi-key bundle, leave the title you want to give unredeemed and pass along only that individual key. Fanatical cautions: “Please remember that each Steam® key can only be redeemed once.”
This is a practical option for genuine extras, but it is less protected than an official gift order. Once a key is copied to someone else, you cannot edit or revoke the serial. Do not activate the game on your account first: an activated game is part of your Steam library, not an unused key you can pass along.
Should I copy and paste a revealed key?
It can work, but it is the least protected approach. Fanatical’s older localized help text describes buying a key, revealing it, and copying it into an email or document; the current English guidance instead directs customers to gift eligible orders through Fanatical. Treat copy-and-paste as a legacy way to transmit a serial, not as the preferred gift workflow.
Revealing a key has meaningful consequences. It disables the official Gift this order option and generally ends ordinary refund eligibility. A serial in email, chat, or a screenshot can be copied and redeemed by someone other than the intended recipient. Fanatical says it will not refund keys stolen or compromised because of a breach in a customer’s account security. Share a raw key only if you accept that it may be impossible to recover or replace.

Fanatical’s terms describe products as for personal, non-commercial use and allow purchases of up to two serial keys for a product for gifting; some products are limited to one key. The terms say the limit will not be raised. That is not permission to run a key-resale business or transfer a game that has already been activated.
How do I check whether a key will work in the recipient’s country?
Check the product’s country restrictions before buying. Fanatical detects the buyer’s country from their IP address and supplies the version for that country; a key can be blocked in another country or activate a locally altered version. Puerto Rico may be treated separately from the United States.
- Open the game’s product page and find “Activates in [country].”
- Select “Check country restrictions,” then choose the recipient’s country.
- If the product page does not settle the question, check SteamDB using the game’s Steam ID for additional package and country details, or ask Fanatical Support before purchase.
Do not use a VPN or another method to make the store think you are in a different country. Fanatical’s terms prohibit location-blocking software or changing an IP address to view the site from another country. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement also forbids IP proxying to evade geographic restrictions or obtain pricing that does not apply to your location. A mismatched region is a failed gift, not a safe workaround.

What happens if I reveal a key, need a refund, or get “Duplicate Key”?
Key disclosure changes your options, so check the order carefully before revealing anything. Fanatical’s ordinary refund terms generally require a request within 14 days of purchase and that the game has not been activated or downloaded. A disclosed serial usually makes a non-mystery product ineligible for an ordinary refund, although Fanatical may consider a discretionary request if the game is unactivated, the request is within the stated window, the platform has not withdrawn the product, and the request is considered reasonable.
Mystery bundles have a separate trigger: once the mystery product name is revealed, Fanatical says the bundle is non-refundable even if the key itself remains hidden. EU cooling-off rights may be lost when download or key disclosure begins. UK residents may have fault remedies under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 within 30 days.
A completed order that has had any part refunded is also ineligible for gifting. If the gift is your goal, do not reveal keys or start a refund process before checking whether the order remains eligible.

On Steam, “Duplicate Key” means the serial has already been redeemed or otherwise cannot be used as expected. Fanatical’s FAQ identifies several possible causes: someone copied and redeemed the key before you, a publisher cancelled a very old unused key, or Fanatical supplied a duplicate. Contact Fanatical Support with the order number, game title, and key so it can track the issue. Fanatical says older unused keys are harder to rectify, so redeem keys promptly.

Often, yes. A Steam-native gift keeps the purchase within Valve’s gifting system, and a Steam gift card lets the recipient buy a game in their own store country. Either avoids sending a Fanatical serial as exposed text, though Steam gifts still have title and regional rules.
Steam store gifts
A Steam gift is a new purchase, not a transfer of a game already in your library. Valve says a gift is a one-time transfer into the recipient’s collection after redemption. As of Valve’s July 2026 “Gifting made easier” update, ordinary gifts and wishlist gifts no longer require you to be Steam friends with the recipient, and guest checkout can be used to buy any Steam game.
Valve also allows games and digital gift cards to be sent to an email address. The address need not be the one used for the recipient’s Steam login. An email gift must be accepted within 30 days or it is automatically refunded to the purchaser; email gifts cannot be scheduled, and the purchaser and recipient must live in the same country. Cross-region gifts to a friend in a higher-priced region use the recipient region’s price, and the recipient must be on your Steam friends list. Some games still do not offer a gift option at checkout.

Valve offers digital and physical Steam gift cards. The recipient can redeem the value for games, software, hardware, and other purchases available on Steam. A physical card can be redeemed at Steam’s wallet-code page. Once money is added to a Steam Wallet, Valve’s terms say it is non-refundable and non-transferable, so a gift card gives choice before redemption but not a way to move the funds between accounts afterward.

Fanatical does not sell Fanatical or Steam gift cards. Its gift guide lists other platform cards, depending on location, including Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, Roblox, Minecraft, and EA; those do not function as Steam Wallet credit.
Which gifting method should I use?
- Choose Fanatical Gift this order when you are buying an eligible Fanatical product and want the order to remain manageable until the recipient accepts it.
- Share an unused bundle key when you have a separate extra Steam key and are comfortable with the fact that it cannot be recalled after sharing.
- Buy the game as a Steam gift when the title is giftable on Steam and you want Valve, rather than a raw serial, to deliver it.
- Send a Steam gift card when the recipient should choose the game or when a Fanatical country-specific key could be incompatible.
For cross-border gifting, decide based on the recipient’s Steam store country, not just their physical address or the country shown in a message. Neither Fanatical nor Steam terms allow using a VPN or transferring an already-owned subscription as a workaround.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send a Steam gift to someone who is not on my friends list?
For an ordinary Steam gift or a gift from a shared wishlist, Valve’s July 2026 update removed the friends-list requirement. Cross-region gifts are different: the recipient must be on your Steam friends list, and Valve applies the recipient region’s price.

No. Under Valve’s July 2026 gifting update, an email gift can be sent to an address other than the email used for the recipient’s Steam login. The recipient still needs a Steam account to claim the game.
Does Steam limit how much money can be in a Wallet?
Valve’s Subscriber Agreement sets a 24-hour aggregate cap of US$2,000 or the local equivalent for funds stored in and spent from the Steam Wallet. This is a wallet limit, not a Fanatical key or order-gifting limit.
