You can make a page easier for Google AI features, Bing Copilot, and ChatGPT search to discover and cite in a focused 30-minute pass: check crawler access and search eligibility, make the page’s answer and evidence clear, then verify what search tools can observe. These fixes remove common obstacles; they do not guarantee that a platform will crawl, index, rank, or cite the page.
What should you fix first to make a site quotable by AI?
Start with access, not wording. An answer cannot be selected if the relevant crawler cannot fetch the page, and clear writing cannot compensate for a page that is blocked or ineligible for ordinary search. Google says generative-AI search eligibility depends on being indexed and eligible to appear with a normal Search snippet; Bing connects discovery and indexing fundamentals to eligibility for AI-generated experiences, grounding results, and citations.
Use the checklist below on one representative page. It is designed to fit 30 minutes when the page and its settings are straightforward. A firewall investigation, indexing problem, or substantial rewrite can take longer; record the issue rather than treating the time limit as a reason to skip it.
How do I check whether AI crawlers can reach my page?
Use the first five minutes to check that the page is publicly reachable and that your site is not blocking the relevant crawler. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as a crawler to allow when you want public content to be discoverable and included in summaries and snippets.

- Open the page without signing in. Confirm that the intended URL loads for a normal visitor and returns a normal success response, rather than a login screen, access-denied page, or broken destination.
- Inspect robots.txt. Look for rules that block the page or the relevant crawler. If ChatGPT inclusion matters, check specifically for OAI-SearchBot and remove a disallow rule if you intend OpenAI search to discover the page.
- Check controls beyond robots.txt. Review authentication, CDN rules, and firewall settings. A page can appear open in a browser yet still be inaccessible to a crawler if another layer denies its request.
- Keep the intended access scope clear. Allowing a search crawler is a choice about discovery, not a requirement to make private or restricted material public. Do not loosen access controls for content that should remain protected.
OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ describes crawler access as part of helping content be discovered, surfaced, and clearly cited and linked. Allowing OAI-SearchBot makes discovery possible; it does not promise inclusion or a citation.
How do I check indexability and page discovery?
Spend minutes 5–10 confirming that the page has one clear URL, can be indexed, and is discoverable through your site. Google’s guidance makes normal Search eligibility a prerequisite for its generative-AI search experiences, while Bing recommends ordinary discovery signals such as XML sitemaps, IndexNow, and internal links.
- Confirm the canonical URL. Identify the version you want search systems to treat as the main page. Check that its canonical signal points to that version rather than to a duplicate or unrelated URL.
- Check indexability and snippet eligibility. Look for accidental blocking or settings that prevent the page from appearing with a normal search snippet. Use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to inspect the page’s status and any reported indexing issue.
- Make sure the page is discoverable. Confirm it is included in a current XML sitemap where appropriate and reachable through crawlable internal links. Bing also recommends IndexNow as a discovery signal.
- Resolve competing URLs. Look for duplicate, redirected, blocked, or thin URLs that could compete with the intended page. Fix or consolidate the versions that do not serve a distinct purpose rather than sending more signals to each one.
Do not read eligibility as a promise of service. Google explicitly says meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. A sitemap, internal link, or allowed crawler can help establish access and discovery; none guarantees that a platform will use the page.

Use minutes 10–20 to make the page’s answer easy to find and its claims easy to interpret. Put a direct one- or two-sentence answer immediately below the main heading, then organize the rest around distinct reader questions and support each important claim with evidence and clear scope.

Put the answer before the explanation
Write an opening answer that stands on its own. Name the subject, state the actual outcome, and include any key qualification needed to keep it accurate. For example, a page about a service available only in certain locations should identify that scope in the answer rather than leave readers to infer it from a later paragraph.
Then use descriptive headings that resemble the questions a reader would ask, such as “How do I make my site quotable by AI?” or “What should I fix first?” Each section should address one main claim or task. This makes the page easier to scan without turning it into a collection of disconnected, keyword-shaped fragments.
Make claims precise enough to verify
Define terms the reader may interpret differently. Put relevant dates, geography, versions, exceptions, and other limits beside the claim they qualify. Avoid broad statements when the evidence supports only a narrower one. If a claim depends on a particular policy, process, or measurement, state that context instead of presenting it as universal.

Use concise lists or tables when they genuinely clarify steps or comparisons, but keep the decisive explanation in visible text. A table should help a reader understand the difference; it should not be the only place where a crucial qualification appears.

Show who is responsible for the information
Add an author byline or responsible organization where readers would expect one, and link claims to primary evidence when available. Google’s people-first guidance stresses original information, expertise, accuracy, and clear authorship. A byline is not a substitute for trustworthy content: the page still needs to show why its information is useful and how its claims can be checked.
Give readers something beyond a generic summary
Include first-hand examples, measurements, or process details when you have them and can explain their scope. Google’s guidance emphasizes unique, valuable, expert-led material over “AEO/GEO hacks.” A page that merely restates common information without adding useful evidence gives readers—and systems that need to distinguish it from similar pages—less reason to rely on it.
Do not invent experience or measurements to make a page look authoritative. If you have no first-hand evidence for a claim, make the basis and limits of the information clear instead.
What should I do in the last 10 minutes?
Use minutes 20–25 to improve verifiability, then minutes 25–30 to check the page and record a baseline. These steps help identify avoidable confusion and make future changes easier to assess; they cannot produce a guaranteed citation.

Minutes 20–25: make important facts easier to verify
- Place the source, publication date, and relevant scope beside each important claim where possible.
- Use descriptive image filenames and meaningful alt text. Bing advises that image text should reinforce the main written explanation, not replace it.
- Use structured data when it supports ordinary Search features and accurately describes visible page content. Google says structured data is not required for generative-AI search; there is no need to add special AI schema just for that purpose.
- Do not make an unnecessary llms.txt file the priority. Google’s guidance does not identify it as a requirement for generative-AI search.
Minutes 25–30: validate and record what you see
- Check Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Review the page for crawl or index errors and inspect whether the selected canonical matches the URL you intend to be authoritative.
- Record the page version. Note the exact URL and version reviewed, along with the last-modified date. This makes a later comparison meaningful if the page changes.
- Save a baseline. Record the current crawl and index status and any relevant visibility information available in the tools. Separate observed facts from assumptions about why a platform did or did not use the page.
- Review AI-search reporting where available. Google’s Generative AI performance report, where available, and Bing’s AI Performance tooling can help monitor performance and citation visibility. Treat them as measurement tools, not inclusion guarantees.

The same page fundamentals matter across platforms, but crawler access and reporting are not identical. Use this comparison to decide which checks to prioritize for the audiences you want to reach.

No special schema.org markup is required for Google generative-AI search, and Google does not make an unnecessary llms.txt file a priority. Use structured data when it serves an ordinary Search feature and accurately represents the content; do not add markup or a separate file on the assumption that either guarantees an AI citation.

What can a 30-minute pass actually accomplish?
It can catch common problems: a crawler blocked by a rule, a page that is difficult to discover, a confusing answer buried below the fold, unclear sourcing, or a missing baseline. It cannot force a platform to crawl or index the page, make a weak claim authoritative, or guarantee that an AI feature will cite it.
For a representative page, the best use of the half hour is to remove the clearest access and clarity barriers, then record what remains unresolved. Google says SEO remains relevant for generative-AI search, and Bing connects SEO best practices with grounding and citations. That supports investing in sound publishing practices—not treating AI visibility as a separate technical trick.
