To get Quizlet Learn for free, use the limited free preview, join a qualifying teacher-managed class, or claim an eligible seven-day annual-plan trial and cancel before renewal. Unlimited individual Learn access is generally paid. For permanent free spaced repetition, Anki is the strongest open-source alternative, although its iOS app is paid.

Quizlet’s current documentation makes an important distinction: free users can begin a Learn study session, but full individual access is associated with Quizlet Plus subscriptions. Students may receive unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test access when they study qualifying sets through a properly configured teacher-managed class.

Key takeaways

  • Quizlet Learn is not unlimited for ordinary individual free accounts, although non-subscribers can start a limited free Learn session.
  • Students in a qualifying teacher-managed Quizlet class can receive unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test access for sets added to that class.
  • Quizlet’s upgrade page lists Plus at $35.99 per year and Plus Unlimited at $44.99 per year in the United States during the research period, with prices subject to change.
  • The seven-day trial applies to eligible annual plans and converts to a paid annual subscription unless canceled before renewal.
  • Anki offers a genuinely free core on desktop and Android and is better suited to configurable long-term spaced repetition than Quizlet-style guided practice.
  • RemNote is a useful proprietary alternative for learners who want notes, PDFs, and flashcards in one workspace.

Is Quizlet Learn free?

Quizlet Learn is not fully free for ordinary individual users. Quizlet’s current Learn documentation lists full Learn access for Quizlet Plus and Quizlet Plus for teachers subscribers, while non-subscribers can start a free study session as a preview.

The practical answer is therefore more precise than either “yes” or “no”:

  • Free account: basic flashcard study and access to Quizlet’s user-created library, plus limited or preview Learn access subject to the account and region.
  • Teacher-managed class: qualifying students can receive unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test access for sets attached to the class.
  • Free trial: eligible users can try an annual paid plan for seven days, but the trial can become a paid annual subscription.
  • Paid plan: Quizlet Plus and Plus Unlimited provide broader Learn access, with different quotas and features.

Older guides that describe Learn as entirely free may be outdated. Quizlet can change plan names, limits, eligibility, and regional availability, so the account’s current upgrade and billing screens take priority over an older article or screenshot.

What does Quizlet Learn do?

Quizlet Learn creates a guided study path based on a learner’s goal and familiarity with a flashcard set. Quizlet says the mode uses learning-science principles and machine learning to select practice activities and adapt the session.

Depending on the set, device, account, and current interface, Learn may let you:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

  • Answer with terms or definitions.
  • Select a specific language where language options are available.
  • Study only starred terms.
  • Shuffle terms.
  • Adjust audio settings.
  • Choose among available question types.
  • Use Write and Spell activities.
  • Retype correct answers after missed questions when that option is enabled.
  • Choose grading options.

Quizlet Learn is a guided practice mode inside Quizlet, not necessarily a full spaced-repetition system with transparent, user-controlled scheduling. Anki, for example, schedules future reviews according to recall ratings and is designed around long-term retention. Quizlet is generally more convenient for quick practice, shared sets, and polished activities; Anki generally gives the learner more control over review scheduling.

How can you start Quizlet’s free Learn session?

You can usually start the free Learn preview from a flashcard set without purchasing a subscription.

  1. Log in to Quizlet.
  2. Open a flashcard set.
  3. Select Learn.
  4. Choose a goal for the study session.
  5. Open Options and adjust available settings such as question types, language, starred terms, shuffle, audio, or grading.

Quizlet’s official Learn instructions describe the general path and available options. Web, iOS, and Android labels can differ, so look for the equivalent Learn and Options controls rather than expecting identical menus on every platform.

A free session is useful for sampling the question types and personalized path. The free session should not be treated as a promise of unlimited daily Learn access. If Quizlet presents a paywall after the preview, that normally means the account needs a qualifying subscription or class entitlement.

What are the legitimate ways to use Quizlet Learn without paying?

1. Use the free Learn preview

The preview is the simplest route for occasional study. Open a set, choose Learn, and complete the available session. This option is appropriate when you only need to review a set occasionally and can accept limited access, advertisements, or changing free-plan restrictions.

2. Join a teacher-managed Quizlet class

A qualifying teacher-managed class is the strongest legitimate free route for students. According to Quizlet’s student-access guidance, students can receive unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test access when they are logged in, enrolled in the class, and studying sets added to that class through the class page.

Class access is not a general free-account loophole. The teacher must create and manage the class with the required permissions, the student must be enrolled in the correct account, and the set must be attached to the class. Access may apply only to class sets, not every set found through Quizlet search.

3. Start an eligible annual-plan trial

Quizlet’s upgrade page currently shows a seven-day trial for eligible annual plans. The monthly plan is listed as ineligible for that trial. The trial is temporary access to a paid subscription, not a permanent free plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Ask a school or institution

Schools, universities, tutoring providers, and academic departments may purchase teacher or group subscriptions. Ask a teacher, school administrator, library, or department whether institutional access exists. A student may use institution-provided access only through the institution’s authorized process; a student should not attempt to claim a school plan without permission.

Quizlet’s teacher guide describes teacher and group-subscription contexts, but the exact arrangement depends on the institution.

How do you get unlimited free Learn through a teacher’s class?

Teacher-class access works when the teacher attaches the study material to a class and the student opens the material from that class while logged in.

Teacher steps

  1. Create a Quizlet class.
  2. Create or locate the relevant flashcard set.
  3. Add the set to the class.
  4. Invite the students.
  5. Confirm that the teacher account has the administrative permissions required for free student Learn and Test access.

Student steps

  1. Sign in to the Quizlet account that the teacher invited.
  2. Accept the class invitation.
  3. Open the class page.
  4. Choose a set that the teacher added to the class.
  5. Start Learn from the class-linked set rather than opening the same set through a general search result or the home page.

Why does Quizlet still show a paywall after class enrollment?

If a student still sees a paywall, the student should check the class setup before assuming Quizlet is malfunctioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the student appears on the class’s Members page.
  2. Confirm that the correct Quizlet account is logged in.
  3. Confirm that the specific set was added to the class.
  4. Open the set from the class page, not from general search or the home page.
  5. Ask the teacher to reinvite or re-add the student.
  6. Confirm that the class is managed by a teacher account with the required permissions.

These checks follow Quizlet’s troubleshooting guidance for free student access. A regional entitlement or a change to Quizlet’s current plan rules can also affect the result.

Is Quizlet’s seven-day trial really free?

The trial can be free at signup, but the trial is attached to an annual subscription. Quizlet’s current upgrade page states that the annual plan begins after the trial and that the account is billed unless the subscription is canceled before renewal.

Before starting, check all of the following:

  • Whether the account is eligible.
  • Whether the selected plan is annual.
  • The exact renewal date shown at checkout.
  • The exact amount and currency shown for the account.
  • Whether the subscription is billed by Quizlet, Apple, or Google.

Trial eligibility may be limited by account history, promotion, platform, or region. The exact checkout screen is authoritative for the account.

How can you avoid an unwanted annual charge?

  1. Start the trial only when you are ready to test the paid features.
  2. Record the renewal date immediately.
  3. Set a calendar reminder several days before renewal.
  4. Identify the billing provider: Quizlet’s website, Apple’s App Store, or Google Play.
  5. Cancel through the same billing provider that processed the subscription.
  6. Confirm that automatic renewal is off.
  7. Save the cancellation confirmation email or screen.

A canceled subscription may remain active until the trial or paid period ends, depending on the billing channel and policy. Check the billing settings after cancellation. Do not assume that deleting the Quizlet app, signing out, or removing a payment method cancels the subscription, and do not assume that cancellation automatically guarantees a refund.

What is the difference between Quizlet Plus and Plus Unlimited?

Quizlet Plus and Quizlet Plus Unlimited are different paid tiers. The following prices and quotas are the figures shown on Quizlet’s U.S. upgrade page during the research period; prices, taxes, currencies, promotions, and availability can vary.

Plan Price shown Learn access Practice tests Textbook solutions/Q&A Best for
Quizlet Plus $35.99 per year, displayed as $2.99/month billed annually 20 Learn rounds per month 3 per month 3 uses per month Regular users whose monthly quotas are sufficient
Quizlet Plus Unlimited $44.99 per year, displayed as $3.75/month billed annually No listed Learn-round limit Complete access listed Plan-page terms apply Heavy Quizlet users who need more Learn and practice access

The plan names and limits are taken from the Quizlet upgrade page. “Unlimited” should be read narrowly: it refers to the listed Learn and practice features, not necessarily every current or future Quizlet feature.

Quizlet Plus is the better fit when you already depend on Quizlet’s shared library, want the native guided Learn workflow, and can stay within the monthly quotas. Plus Unlimited is more appropriate for intensive users who would regularly exceed the Plus Learn-round or practice-test limits. Students with qualifying class access may have no reason to pay for either plan for assigned class sets.

What does a free Quizlet account still provide?

A free Quizlet account can still be useful for occasional study. The available experience may include access to user-created flashcard sets, basic flashcard study, selected games or activities, and a limited Learn preview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quizlet’s free feature set is not permanently fixed. Account type, geography, platform, set, promotion, and product changes can affect which activities appear. Check the controls visible on the account instead of relying on old claims that every Learn feature is free.

A basic free account is a reasonable choice when you browse existing sets, review flashcards occasionally, and accept advertisements or limited Learn access. A basic account is a poor substitute for a daily spaced-repetition system when you need predictable long-term review scheduling.

What is the best open-source alternative to Quizlet Learn?

Anki is the strongest open-source alternative for long-term flashcard review. Anki is built around spaced repetition: the learner rates recall, and the software schedules future reviews. The official Anki site provides the computer software and platform information, while the Anki source repository documents the open-source project.

Anki’s source code is licensed under the AGPL version 3 or later, with some components under other licenses, as described in the project’s license file. “Open source” does not mean that every official client is free on every platform.

Platform or product Cost characterization What it means
Anki computer version Free Suitable for learners who want a free desktop spaced-repetition system.
AnkiDroid Free on Android A separate Android client developed by contributors.
AnkiMobile Paid one-time official iOS app “Anki is free” does not mean the official iOS client is free.

Anki is better than Quizlet for learners who prioritize long-term retention, customizable scheduling, local control, and avoiding recurring subscriptions. Anki is less immediately friendly for learners who want games, a polished guided path, or a large integrated public-set experience with minimal setup.

What are Anki’s drawbacks?

  • Anki has a steeper learning curve than Quizlet.
  • Anki is less game-like and less visually guided.
  • Card creation, formatting, and deck organization can require more work.
  • The official iOS client is paid once rather than free.
  • Shared decks vary in quality.
  • Poorly written cards remain poor learning material even when the scheduling system is strong.

How do you move Quizlet cards to Anki?

Quizlet-to-Anki migration is possible in many cases, but the process depends on the set owner’s export permissions, the format available from Quizlet, and the type of media in the set. Do not promise that every Quizlet set exports cleanly.

  1. Open the Quizlet set and check whether the owner permits export.
  2. Use Quizlet’s available export function when export is authorized.
  3. When possible, save the term-definition data as a tab-separated or CSV file.
  4. Import the file into Anki.
  5. Check the delimiter, field order, HTML formatting, accents, images, and audio.
  6. Tag the imported cards by subject, course, or exam.
  7. Set a manageable number of new cards per day.
  8. Review consistently instead of importing a large deck and cramming immediately before an exam.

Anki’s import documentation covers properly formatted text files and Anki package files such as .apkg. A Quizlet export may need manual cleanup, and third-party converters may introduce privacy, account-security, or formatting risks. Never give a converter your Quizlet password unless you have independently verified its trustworthiness; manual export and import are safer when available.

What should you check after importing?

  • Terms and definitions are in the correct fields.
  • Two-sided cards have not been reversed accidentally.
  • HTML tags display properly.
  • Accents and non-Latin characters survived the conversion.
  • Images and audio are present or clearly marked as missing.
  • Duplicate cards have been removed.
  • Copyrighted course material was copied only with appropriate authorization.

A public Quizlet set is not automatically public-domain content. Export only material that you created or are authorized to copy, and respect the set owner’s restrictions.

Is RemNote a good Quizlet alternative?

RemNote is a good proprietary alternative for learners who want notes and flashcards in one connected workspace. Its pricing page currently lists a free plan with unlimited notes and flashcards, unlimited synced devices, three annotated PDFs, five image-occlusion cards, and one handwritten document.

RemNote’s pricing page lists Pro at $8 per month billed annually and Pro with AI at $18 per month billed annually during the research period. Verify the live price before subscribing because pricing, taxes, billing periods, and feature limits can change.

Tool Best match Free or paid considerations Main trade-off
Quizlet free Occasional flashcards and browsing shared sets Free access may include basic study and a limited Learn preview Learn access is not generally unlimited for individual free users
Quizlet Plus Existing Quizlet users who need guided Learn $35.99/year shown in the U.S.; 20 Learn rounds per month listed Recurring annual billing and feature quotas
Quizlet Plus Unlimited Heavy Quizlet users $44.99/year shown in the U.S.; unlimited Learn rounds listed Still proprietary and subscription-based
Anki Long-term retention and customizable spaced repetition Free desktop software and free AnkiDroid; paid one-time iOS client More setup and a steeper learning curve
RemNote Notes, PDFs, linked concepts, and flashcards together Free plan with limits; Pro and Pro with AI are subscriptions Proprietary platform with paid advanced features

RemNote is not open source. Advanced PDF, handwriting, exam-scheduling, and AI capabilities may be limited or paid, so RemNote should not be presented as a completely unrestricted free replacement for Quizlet Learn.

Which Quizlet alternative should you choose?

Your priority Best option Why
Occasional free flashcard review Quizlet free You can browse sets and use basic study tools without committing to a subscription.
Unlimited Learn as an enrolled student Qualifying teacher-managed Quizlet class Eligible students can receive unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test access for class sets.
Short-term premium Quizlet access Eligible annual-plan trial Useful for a concentrated study period if you record the renewal date and cancel in time.
No recurring cost and long-term retention Anki desktop or AnkiDroid Anki provides a free core and configurable spaced-repetition scheduling.
Notes, PDFs, and flashcards together RemNote RemNote integrates notes and cards, although advanced features may require Pro.
Existing Quizlet library with minimal migration Quizlet Plus The native Learn workflow and existing sets remain available.

What should you avoid?

Do not use repeated-account schemes, leaked accounts, modified apps, trial-reset services, browser extensions that claim to unlock paid Learn, or unofficial “lifetime Quizlet” offers. Those approaches are not legitimate free access and can create account, privacy, malware, or payment risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with Quizlet-to-Anki converters that request account credentials. Prefer Quizlet’s own authorized export tools and manual cleanup. No converter can guarantee that images, audio, formatting, permissions, or ownership rights will transfer correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Quizlet Learn without a subscription?

You can start a limited free Learn session without a subscription, but unrestricted individual Learn access is generally associated with Quizlet Plus. Students in a qualifying teacher-managed class can receive unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test access for sets added to that class.

Does the Quizlet free trial automatically charge me?

An eligible seven-day annual-plan trial can convert into a paid annual subscription unless you cancel before the renewal date. Check whether Quizlet, Apple, or Google processed the subscription and cancel through that same billing channel.

Is Anki completely free?

Anki’s computer version is free, and AnkiDroid is free on Android. The official AnkiMobile client for iOS is a paid one-time purchase, so Anki is not free on every platform.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I export every Quizlet set to Anki?

No. Export depends on the set owner’s permissions and the format available from Quizlet, and exported cards may lose images, audio, formatting, or correct field order. Export only material you are authorized to copy and inspect the imported deck before studying.

The Bottom Line

Start with Quizlet’s free Learn preview. If you are a student, ask your teacher to add the set to a properly configured Quizlet class and open the set from the class page. If you use the seven-day trial, record the renewal date and cancel through the correct billing provider. For permanent free, long-term spaced repetition, choose Anki on desktop or Android; choose RemNote instead when integrated notes and PDFs matter more than open-source software.
