Use Microsoft 365 in your Chromebook’s browser: go to Microsoft365.com, sign in, and open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, or OneDrive. For email, go to Outlook.com. The web apps are the most broadly documented way to use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook; Windows and Mac desktop editions cannot be installed on ChromeOS.
Use Microsoft 365 in your Chromebook browser
- Open Chrome and visit Microsoft365.com.
- Sign in with a personal Microsoft account or the account associated with your Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Choose Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, or OneDrive. To use Outlook, open Outlook.com.
- To make the apps easier to return to, bookmark the relevant pages in Chrome or create browser shortcuts.
Microsoft says a free personal Microsoft account supports viewing and basic editing. An account associated with a Microsoft 365 subscription unlocks more advanced editing features. Which features are available depends on the account and app; Microsoft’s Chromebook instructions do not promise that every desktop feature is available in the browser. Can you install desktop Microsoft Office?
No. Microsoft says Windows and Mac desktop editions of Microsoft 365 or Office 2016 cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Use the browser-based apps instead. If you want to investigate Android apps, check the Play Store on your particular Chromebook, but do not assume that an app will be available or supported.
What about Microsoft 365 Android apps?
Microsoft’s guidance is inconsistent: its dedicated Chromebook support page says the Android versions of Office, Outlook, OneNote, and OneDrive are not currently supported on Chromebook, while a separate Android setup page says Microsoft 365 apps may be installed on a Chromebook with Google Play. Google confirms that Play Store access is limited to some Chromebook models, app availability and compatibility vary, and a work or school administrator may restrict installation. Together, these pages do not establish universal Chromebook compatibility. The browser route is the safest starting point; if you want to try an Android app, check whether Play Store and that specific app are available on your device.

Open and edit Office files from Chromebook Files
Google documents a workflow for opening Office files from the Chromebook Files app with Microsoft 365. In that flow, set up OneDrive integration and use OneDrive to open and edit the files; files may be moved to OneDrive, and changes save there. Follow Google’s instructions for Office files on a Chromebook to configure the workflow.

If you would rather use Google’s editors, Docs, Sheets, and Slides can open supported Office files. In Google’s documented route, files move to Google Drive. Choose the workflow that matches where you want files stored and which editor you need; compatibility with a particular file may depend on its format and features.

Do not rely on these documented Microsoft 365 or Google-app file workflows for full offline editing. Google says Microsoft 365 files and files opened through Docs, Sheets, or Slides cannot be opened through those routes while the Chromebook is offline. If you try to open an offline file, Google says a limited basic editor may be offered; that is not equivalent to full Microsoft 365 offline access. See Google’s offline and Office-file guidance.
