To get directions in Google Maps, select Directions, enter a starting point and destination, choose a travel mode, then select a route. On a computer, you can type addresses or place names, or select points on the map. The controls differ on mobile, and available travel modes depend on your location and route.
Get directions on a computer
- Open Google Maps and select Directions.
- Enter your starting point and destination. Type an address or place name, or select a point on the map.
- Choose one of the travel modes shown for your route and location.
- Select a route on the map. When alternatives are available, Google marks its preferred route in blue and other routes in gray; each displayed option includes an estimated travel time.
Route options may differ by location. Compare the travel time and distance, and consider any cost information or practical restrictions—such as tolls or highways—shown for your route. Google says duration, distance, price, mode preference, and relevance to the search can inform how transportation options are ranked; not every route view displays every factor.
Get directions on Android
- Search for your destination in Google Maps or tap it on the map.
- Select Directions.
- Choose a travel mode from the options shown for that route.
- Review the route and select the one you want to follow.
This is Google’s documented Android flow; the controls and their placement are not necessarily the same as on a computer. For details, see Google Maps’ Android directions instructions.
Add stops or change a route
On the computer workflow, you can add or reorder stops and adjust supported route options. Google allows up to 9 stops, including the final destination. Multiple destinations are not available for public transit or flight searches in the desktop instructions. Options depend on the route and location.

Why a travel mode may be missing
- Public transit: Transit directions depend on route information supplied to Google Maps by local transit agencies or operators.
- Cycling: Cycling directions are available only in supported countries or regions; Google notes that some directions are in development or have limited availability.
- Other modes: The choices Google displays can vary by route, location, and feature availability.
Share or send directions
You can share directions by link or embed them as a map. To send directions from a computer to a phone or tablet, you must be signed in to the same Google account on both devices. Google’s send-to-device workflow does not support multiple destinations. See Google’s instructions for sharing, sending, or printing directions.

Google Maps Help advises: “When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.” Treat app directions as guidance, not a replacement for posted signs or applicable rules.
