You can’t switch on a Google featured snippet in WordPress or guarantee that Google will select your page. Google’s systems choose a page and passage for each search when they judge it would help answer the query. Your best approach is to publish an accurate, useful page that answers a specific question clearly, make that answer visible to readers, and ensure the page can be crawled.
What a featured snippet is—and what it isn’t
A featured snippet is an excerpt from a web page that Google may display prominently when its systems determine the excerpt would help answer a search. It can also appear in a People Also Ask group. The selected passage may vary depending on the query.
It is not the same as an ordinary search-result description. Google generates snippets primarily from page content, although it may use a meta description when that description better represents the page. Nor is a featured snippet the same as a rich result: structured data can make a page eligible for certain rich results, but it does not designate the page for a featured snippet.
How to improve a WordPress page’s chances
Google does not publish a fixed checklist or scoring formula for winning a featured snippet. The following workflow applies its stated emphasis on answering the searcher’s question helpfully; it improves the page for readers but does not ensure a particular search appearance.

- Choose a specific question your page can answer. Match the page to a real reader need and keep its focus clear. A broad topic with no direct answer is a weaker fit for a question-based search.
- Answer the question plainly near the relevant heading. Give a concise, complete response first, then provide the context, steps, qualifications, or evidence readers need. This is a useful editorial approach, not an official length or format requirement.
- Organize the rest of the answer to suit its content. Use descriptive headings, and use a list for genuine steps or a table for a genuine comparison. These structures help readers scan; Google does not promise a particular snippet format because you use a particular heading or markup.
- Keep the answer accurate and visible. Put the information in the page content readers can see. Do not use misleading markup or hide the important answer from readers.
- Make the page crawlable. Google must be able to access the page to consider it. Check the page’s indexing and crawl status in Search Console when needed; fixing an access or indexing problem is different from optimizing passage wording.
- Write an honest meta description. If your WordPress setup provides a way to manage meta tags, write a distinct description that accurately summarizes that page. Google primarily generates snippets from page content and may use the description when it is a more accurate summary. The description is not a featured-snippet switch.
- Review the real search appearance. Search results can vary. When assessing an appearance or performance change, record the query and observation date, and note geography and device where known. Search Console can help you examine your site’s search performance.
Does answer length matter?
Google publishes no exact minimum passage length for a featured snippet. Its guidance says the amount needed varies with the information, language, and platform. Write enough to answer the question correctly and clearly; do not force the answer into a supposed 40-, 50-, or 60-word formula.
Does FAQ schema or other markup get a page featured?
No. Google selects featured snippets automatically; there is no WordPress setting, SEO plugin, FAQ schema, or special markup that tells Google to feature a page. Structured data serves a different purpose: it can establish eligibility for applicable rich results, subject to Google’s requirements, but valid markup does not guarantee a rich result either.

Use structured data only when the page genuinely contains the content represented by an applicable Google-supported result type, and ensure that the marked-up information is visible to readers. Google’s general guidance describes JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa as supported formats for rich-result eligibility and recommends JSON-LD. For relevant structured-data checks, use Google’s Rich Results Test or URL Inspection; passing a test confirms technical aspects, not display.

WordPress itself does not provide a featured-snippet switch. Depending on your CMS setup, you may have a settings screen or another mechanism for managing meta tags. That helps you describe the page in search results; it does not control which passage Google selects. Google’s documentation names WordPress as an example of a CMS that may provide such controls, but it does not endorse a particular plugin for winning snippets.

Google’s site-owner guidance, “Featured Snippets and Your Website,” was updated December 10, 2025. It says site owners cannot directly mark a page as a featured snippet because Google’s systems determine whether a page would make a good answer for a user’s search. The documentation gives no guaranteed timetable for selection.
