Keynote can turn a written outline into a presentation, but the documented AI workflow is not available to every Keynote user. Apple ties outline-based generation and adding generated slides to an Apple Creator Studio subscription, with iPhone instructions requiring iOS 26 or later and iPad instructions requiring iPadOS 26 or later. You choose a theme, describe the presentation in an Overview field, add required details in Key Points, and decide whether Keynote should generate images. Treat the result as an editable first draft: verify facts, tighten the story, replace unsuitable visuals, and correct layouts before presenting.

What AI features does Keynote currently provide?

Keynote’s AI capabilities fall into two groups: the documented outline-to-slides workflow on iPhone and iPad, and newer subscriber tools described in the App Store listing. The first group creates a new presentation or adds generated slides to an open deck. The second includes an Intelligent Assistant beta that can work with slides and other presentation elements, subject to newer device, operating-system and language requirements.

Capability What Apple documents Requirements or limits
Generate from an outline Choose a theme, enter an Overview and Key Points, and optionally generate images. Apple documents this for Apple Creator Studio subscribers; iPhone instructions specify iOS 26 or later and iPad instructions specify iPadOS 26 or later.
Add generated slides Generate slides and insert them into an existing presentation; on iPad, they are inserted after the selected slide. Subscription and operating-system requirements apply to the documented mobile workflow.
Intelligent Assistant beta Apple’s App Store listing says natural-language requests can generate slides, presenter notes, images and shapes, and can search for up-to-date information for use in slides. The listing says this beta requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device and iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 or later, and identifies US English availability. Feature visibility can vary by release and device.
Manual Keynote editing Select a theme, add slides, and edit layouts and content on Mac, iPhone, iPad or iCloud. This ordinary workflow does not depend on the AI generation controls described above.

Apple’s support instructions are procedural: they explain how to start generation and where to enter information. They do not guarantee that generated claims are accurate, that the narrative suits your audience, or that every account will receive the same beta controls.

What should I prepare before asking Keynote to create slides?

Prepare a compact brief before opening the generator. A clear brief gives Keynote boundaries, while a vague request leaves you with generic headings and visual choices that require more editing.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Confirm eligibility first

  • Identify the device you will use and its operating-system version.
  • Check that Apple Creator Studio is active if you want the documented outline-generation or add-slides workflow.
  • If you expect the Intelligent Assistant beta, verify that the device supports Apple Intelligence and that the installed system meets the listing’s newer requirement. Apple describes availability as release- and language-sensitive.

These checks prevent a common mistake: assuming that installing the latest Keynote app automatically exposes every AI control. Apple’s support pages and App Store listing describe different features with different requirements.

Write the outline in audience order

Use a short sequence such as problem, evidence, recommendation and next action. State who will see the deck, what decision or understanding you want, and the tone (for example, instructional, executive or persuasive). Keep each point specific enough to become a slide title or a concise visual explanation.

Separate the overview from required details

Apple’s mobile workflow provides separate Overview and Key Points fields. Put the purpose, audience and overall arc in Overview. Put facts that must appear, definitions, dates, numbers, examples and required terminology in Key Points. This separation is more reliable than burying mandatory details in a long paragraph.

Decide how visuals will be supplied

Choose whether Keynote should generate images. If you turn image generation off, Apple says the resulting slides can retain image placeholders for you to replace. That option is useful when your organization requires approved photography, product screenshots, diagrams or brand assets.

How do I generate a presentation from an outline on iPhone?

On a supported iPhone, start a new presentation, provide the two text inputs Apple documents, choose a theme and set the image option. The generated deck is a draft that you can edit like any other Keynote presentation.

  1. Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later and sign in to the Apple Creator Studio subscription that enables the documented generation feature.
  2. Open Keynote and start the presentation-creation flow. Select a theme whose typography and visual tone fit the audience; changing a theme later can alter spacing and image treatment.
  3. Enter the presentation’s purpose, audience and sequence in the Overview field.
  4. Enter must-include evidence, examples, terminology and constraints in Key Points. Use one requirement per line when that makes the list easier to check.
  5. Choose whether to enable Generate Images. Leave it enabled when concept illustrations are acceptable; disable it when you will provide approved visuals or want placeholders instead.
  6. Start generation using the on-screen command. Read the resulting slide titles and layouts before adding more content or presenting.

Apple’s iPhone guide is at Create a presentation in Keynote on iPhone. The guide establishes the controls and requirements, not the accuracy of the generated text or images.

How do I generate slides on iPad and insert them into an existing deck?

The iPad workflow mirrors the iPhone process but adds a documented insertion point: generated slides can be placed after a selected slide in an open presentation. This is useful when you already have an introduction or established section structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use an iPad running iPadOS 26 or later and confirm the Apple Creator Studio subscription is active.
  2. Open the target presentation, or begin a new one, and select the slide after which the generated material should appear when working in an existing deck.
  3. Choose the generation option, select a theme, and describe the deck in Overview.
  4. List mandatory content in Key Points, including facts that should not be inferred from the outline.
  5. Set Generate Images according to your asset plan. With it off, image placeholders remain where visuals would otherwise be generated.
  6. Run generation and inspect the inserted slides in context. Check whether the new section repeats an earlier point or breaks the presentation’s progression.

Apple’s iPad instructions are available at Create a presentation in Keynote on iPad. The documented insertion behavior is tied to the selected slide, so select the location before generating rather than moving a large block afterward.

Can Keynote generate slides from text on Mac?

Apple’s setup guide says subscribers can generate from a text description in Keynote on Mac, while its detailed step-by-step outline instructions in the cited material target iPhone and iPad. On Mac, use the text-description generation control if it appears in your eligible installation, then apply the same editorial checks used for a mobile-generated deck.

The Mac workflow remains useful even without AI generation: Apple documents selecting a theme, adding slides and editing layout and content on Mac, iPhone, iPad and iCloud. If the AI control is absent on Mac, you can still build the deck manually or generate on a supported mobile device and continue editing on Mac.

Apple’s general setup instructions are at Set up your presentation in Keynote. They describe the cross-platform editing workflow; they do not state that every AI generation feature is available in iCloud.

How should I refine an AI-generated Keynote deck?

Refinement is an editorial pass, not a cosmetic button. Review the argument first, then factual support, slide density, visual consistency and delivery needs. AI can arrange content convincingly while still making an unsupported claim or choosing an irrelevant image.

1. Test the story in slide-title form

Read only the slide titles. They should form a coherent sentence-level outline: the audience’s problem, the evidence, the interpretation and the action. If two titles make the same point, merge or retitle them. If a conclusion appears before the evidence that supports it, reorder the slides.

2. Verify every factual statement

Check dates, quantities, names, definitions and causal language against your source material. Mark claims that need attribution and add a source note or final references slide where appropriate. Apple describes generation controls, but it does not promise automatic fact-checking or a complete citation trail.

3. Reduce slide density

Give each slide one job. Convert paragraphs into short phrases, a process diagram, a comparison or a single highlighted number when that improves comprehension. Keep detailed qualifications in presenter notes or a handout rather than shrinking the body text until it is unreadable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Inspect layouts at presentation size

Look for clipped text, awkward line breaks, tiny labels, overlapping objects and excessive empty space. Apply a consistent title position, body alignment and visual hierarchy. A slide that looks balanced while editing can become difficult to read when projected.

5. Replace or crop visuals deliberately

Ask whether each image explains the point, establishes context or merely decorates the slide. Replace generic generated art with approved photographs, screenshots, charts or diagrams when the subject demands precision. Check that captions, color contrast and image crops do not obscure the intended message.

6. Check transitions between sections

Add a short signpost when the deck changes from background to analysis, or from recommendation to implementation. Remove transition slides that repeat the next slide’s title without adding orientation.

7. Use additional AI controls only when they are visible and eligible

Apple’s App Store listing describes an Intelligent Assistant beta that can generate slides, presenter notes, images and shapes with natural-language requests, and can search for current information for inclusion in slides. Because the listing marks it beta and gives newer device, operating-system and language conditions, treat the control as optional assistance rather than a guaranteed part of every Keynote installation.

What is the difference between normal Keynote editing and subscription AI features?

Normal editing is broadly documented across Apple platforms and lets you control every slide directly. Subscription AI features accelerate first-draft creation or targeted generation, but they add eligibility checks and still require human review.

Decision point Normal Keynote workflow Outline-generation workflow Intelligent Assistant beta
Subscription Apple’s general setup guide describes the workflow without tying it to Apple Creator Studio. Apple documents it for Apple Creator Studio subscribers. Listed as a subscriber feature.
Platform details Mac, iPhone, iPad and iCloud are covered by the general setup guide. iPhone instructions specify iOS 26 or later; iPad instructions specify iPadOS 26 or later. Apple’s listing specifies an Apple Intelligence-capable device and iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 or later.
Primary task Create, add and edit slides manually. Create a presentation from text or add generated slides to an existing presentation. Use natural language to generate slides, presenter notes, images and shapes; the listing also describes searching for current information.
Images You select and edit visual assets yourself. You choose whether to generate images; disabling generation can leave placeholders. Image generation is listed as an assistant capability.
Availability caveat General editing is the stable baseline described by Apple. Controls depend on subscription, device and operating system. Beta status, rollout, device eligibility and US English availability in the listing can limit access.

What should I do when the AI generation option is missing?

Check eligibility in a fixed order instead of repeatedly reinstalling Keynote.

  • Confirm the subscription: the documented mobile outline workflow is tied to Apple Creator Studio.
  • Check the operating system: Apple specifies iOS 26 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 26 or later for iPad. The Intelligent Assistant listing specifies iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 or later.
  • Check the feature type: outline generation and the Intelligent Assistant are separate offerings, so seeing one does not imply access to the other.
  • Check device and language eligibility: the listing requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device for the beta and identifies US English availability.
  • Allow for version differences: Apple labels some capabilities beta and describes them in version history, so controls can change between releases.
  • Use the manual workflow if necessary: choose a theme, add slides and edit content directly on Mac, iPhone, iPad or iCloud.

How can I write a better prompt for Keynote’s outline generator?

Use the Overview and Key Points fields as a compact creative brief rather than a conversational essay. The following pattern gives the generator a purpose and a checkable content list:

Overview: Teach [audience] how [objective] in a [tone] presentation. Move from [starting context] to [decision or action].

Key Points:
- Define [term or problem].
- Explain [process or mechanism] in [number] stages.
- Include [required evidence, date, metric or example].
- Address [objection or limitation].
- End with [specific recommendation or next step].

Replace the bracketed text before submitting it. Put facts that must survive generation in Key Points, and keep the Overview focused on the audience and narrative. After generation, compare every slide against that checklist; an omitted requirement is easier to catch when it is written as a discrete bullet.

What is a reliable end-to-end workflow for an important presentation?

Use AI for speed, then use Keynote’s normal editing tools for control.

  3. Draft the brief: separate the narrative Overview from mandatory Key Points.
  4. Generate a first pass: choose a theme and decide whether image generation is appropriate.
  5. Validate content: verify factual claims, numbers, names, dates and source trail.
  6. Edit structure: remove repetition, repair transitions and ensure every slide has one clear purpose.
  7. Polish design: fix layout, typography, contrast, cropping and placeholders; apply a consistent theme where needed.
  8. Rehearse: present the deck at its actual viewing size and revise any slide that takes too long to read or explain.

This division of labor keeps generation’s speed while preserving your responsibility for accuracy, context and audience fit.

Which Apple documentation should I consult for current requirements?

Use Apple’s platform-specific support pages for the controls you see on screen, and the App Store listing for release-sensitive beta descriptions. Requirements can change, so check the page associated with your device and installed operating system immediately before a time-critical presentation project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Keynote’s AI generation in iCloud?

Apple documents ordinary theme, slide and content editing in iCloud, but the cited outline-generation instructions are for iPhone and iPad, while Mac is described separately as supporting text-description generation for subscribers. Apple does not establish the same AI controls in iCloud, so plan on manual editing there unless your current installation explicitly shows an eligible control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Keynote automatically fact-check the slides it creates?

No automatic accuracy guarantee is stated in Apple’s documentation. Treat generated wording, figures and any information retrieved by an assistant as unverified until you compare them with authoritative sources and add the attribution your audience needs.

What can the Intelligent Assistant create besides slide text?

Apple’s App Store listing says the beta can create presenter notes, images and shapes in response to natural-language requests, in addition to slides. It also describes searching for up-to-date information for incorporation into slides; access depends on the beta’s device, system and language conditions.

Why might two eligible users see different Keynote AI controls?

Apple describes some capabilities as beta and ties them to specific releases, Apple Intelligence-capable hardware and US English availability in the listing. Feature rollout and version differences can therefore change which controls appear even when users have similar Keynote projects.
