Free up smart-TV storage in the least disruptive order: uninstall apps you no longer use, clear supported app caches, and restart before trying anything destructive. Clear an app’s data only when you are prepared to sign in again or lose that app’s local settings. Use a Smart Hub reset or full factory reset only as a last resort because resets remove installed apps, accounts and configuration. Android TV and Google TV can often use a USB drive for additional space, but formatting erases the drive and adopting it as internal storage ties apps and content to that TV and drive.
Why does a smart TV say there is not enough storage?
A smart TV’s internal storage holds installed apps, app updates, cached video and images, downloaded content, user profiles and system files. It is finite; Samsung describes the situation plainly: “The internal storage of your TV is not unlimited.” Streaming apps can accumulate temporary files, while large games and repeated updates consume space permanently.
The warning does not always mean one enormous file is visible. Some space is reserved for the operating system, and some pre-installed apps cannot be removed. Menu names and available controls vary by brand, model, software generation and country, so use the closest path shown on your set rather than assuming every television has the same options.
- Cache: temporary thumbnails, buffers and other rebuildable files. Clearing it is usually reversible and has the smallest effect on your account.
- App data: the app’s local database, downloads, preferences and sign-in state. Clearing it is a deeper reset and can sign you out or remove local settings.
- Installed app: the program itself and its update files. Uninstalling an unused app is the most durable way to reclaim internal space.
- System and bundled software: protected files that normally cannot be deleted. Removing or altering them is not a supported storage fix.
What is the safest order for freeing space?
Work from the most reversible action to the most disruptive. Stop after each step, restart the TV if requested, and check the storage screen again.

- 【OTG Function】:Support nearly all mobile phones which support OTG function, and very easy to operate
- Open the storage or app-management screen. Note which apps are large and which have not been used recently. If the TV offers a size sort, use it; otherwise inspect the largest streaming, game and media apps first.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use. Confirm that you can reinstall them later from the TV’s app store. Some bundled apps show no Uninstall command.
- Clear cache for compatible apps. Start with apps that show unusually large temporary storage or are having playback problems.
- Record credentials before clearing data. Write down the email address, password or activation method for the app, then clear its data only if cache removal and uninstalling other apps did not provide enough room.
- Restart and recheck available space. A restart lets the operating system remove temporary files and recalculate free space. Reopen the storage screen rather than relying only on the original warning.
- Consider a USB drive on supported Android TV or Google TV models. Back up the drive first, because formatting deletes its contents. Choose removable or internal storage deliberately and eject the drive before unplugging it.
- Reset Smart Hub or the whole television only as a last resort. These resets remove configuration and installed apps, so use them only after ordinary cleanup and any model-specific support steps fail.
How do I uninstall apps on Android TV or Google TV?
Google’s documented Android TV path is Home > Settings > Device > Apps > Downloaded. Select the app, choose Uninstall, and confirm. Newer Google TV interfaces may group the same controls under an Apps or See all apps page; the wording can differ by manufacturer.
Check what can and cannot be removed
Downloaded apps normally offer Uninstall. System components and some manufacturer-installed services may offer only Disable, Force stop or storage controls. Do not disable a component merely because it appears large unless the television identifies it as optional; a protected service may be required by the launcher, tuner or remote-control features.
Clear cache or data on Android TV
From the app’s information page, look for Clear cache and, separately, Clear data. Clear cache first. Use Clear data only after saving sign-in details and accepting that downloads, preferences and the local session may disappear. If an app still behaves incorrectly after its data is cleared, uninstall and reinstall it when the TV has enough free space.
How do I uninstall and clean apps on a Samsung Smart TV?
On compatible Samsung models, open Settings > All Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage. Select an app to view its details, then use the available command to delete it or clear its cache or data. Samsung notes that the exact sequence varies by model and region.
Choose cache before data
Clearing cache removes temporary files while preserving more of the app’s local state. Clearing data can return the app to its initial setup, remove locally stored preferences and require another sign-in. If an app is still needed, make sure you know its login or activation process before choosing data removal.

What if Samsung still reports low space?
Samsung’s own progression is to clean compatible app cache or data first, reset Smart Hub if storage is still short, and reset the entire TV only when necessary. A Smart Hub reset initializes downloaded apps, erases accounts and app settings, and returns Smart Hub settings to factory defaults. A full TV reset returns all television settings to factory defaults as well, so photograph important picture, audio, network and accessibility settings before starting.
How do I remove apps on LG webOS?
On supported recent webOS versions, open the Home bar and choose Edit App List. Select the app you no longer need and follow the on-screen delete confirmation. Older webOS generations use different labels or place deletion controls in an app-management screen, and app availability differs by region and TV model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the TV refuses a deletion, the item may be a built-in service rather than a downloaded app. Remove several unused downloaded apps, restart, and try the installation again. LG warns that a factory reset deletes account settings and installed apps, so do not use it as routine maintenance.
How do I clear cache on a Sony Android TV or Google TV?
Sony’s instructions use Settings > Apps > See all apps. Select the app, choose Clear cache, and confirm. If the storage warning or app fault continues, return to the same page and choose Clear data instead, understanding that this is a deeper reset and may remove the app’s local session and settings.
Sony models running Google TV and those running older Android TV software do not always show identical labels. If you cannot find the command, open the app’s information page from the Home screen or consult the model-specific on-screen help rather than deleting random system services.

What is the difference between clearing cache, clearing data and uninstalling?
These actions reclaim different amounts of space and carry different risks. Use the smallest intervention that solves the storage problem.
| Action | Space recovered | Sign-ins and settings | Reversible? | USB required? | Data-loss risk | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary files only; amount depends on the app | Normally retained | Yes; the app rebuilds cache | No | Low | Only where the model and app expose the control |
| Clear app data | App database, downloads and temporary files | May sign you out and reset local preferences | Not for deleted local data; reinstalling may restore only cloud-synced content | No | Moderate | Available on many Android TV, Google TV and Samsung app pages |
| Uninstall app | The app package, updates and its local files | App is removed; account data stored in the app is no longer on the TV | Usually; reinstall later if the app remains available | No | Moderate if local downloads were not backed up | Downloaded apps only; protected software may not be removable |
| Smart Hub reset | Resets the Samsung smart platform rather than selectively deleting one item | Downloaded apps, app accounts and Smart Hub settings are wiped | Configuration must be set up again | No | High for Smart Hub data | Samsung models that provide the reset |
| Full factory reset | Returns the television to its factory state | All TV settings, accounts and installed apps are removed | Only by setting the TV up again | No | Highest | Menu path and reset scope vary by model and region |
| USB expansion (Android TV/Google TV) | Adds capacity for supported apps and other content | Depends on whether the drive is removable or adopted as internal | Removable mode is portable; internal mode is tied to the TV and drive | Yes | Formatting erases the drive; unplugging adopted storage can disable stored apps | Supported Android TV/Google TV models and compatible drives |
Can I use a USB drive to add storage to Android TV or Google TV?
Often, yes. Google documents USB storage for apps and other content on supported Android TV and Google TV devices, but the television checks the drive’s format and may require you to format it. Google’s warning is explicit: “When you format your drive, you’ll erase what’s on it.” Copy photos, recordings and other needed files to another device before connecting the drive.
Format the drive and choose a storage mode
- Connect the USB drive to the TV and open the storage prompt or the TV’s Storage and reset settings.
- If the TV asks for a format, follow the prompt. Google documents FAT support; the exact accepted format depends on the television.
- Choose Removable storage if you want to move the drive between compatible devices. In this mode, content can be moved elsewhere, but apps and games cannot be moved to the drive.
- Choose Internal storage if you want the TV to store more app data on it. Adoption encrypts or binds the data for that television; the data cannot simply be moved to another device.
- Wait for formatting and indexing to finish before moving anything. Interrupting the process can leave the drive unusable until it is formatted again.
Move apps and other content
To move a supported app, open Apps, select the app, choose Storage used, then select the USB drive. Not every app permits relocation. To move other content, open Storage and reset > USB drive > Migrate data > Move now, if those controls appear on your model.
Use the TV’s Eject command before unplugging the drive. If adopted internal storage is ejected, apps stored on it are unavailable until the same drive is connected again. A drive that works for playing media on one television is not automatically suitable for app expansion on another; verify the exact model’s support and capacity guidance.
When should I reset Smart Hub or perform a factory reset?
Reset only after deleting unused apps, clearing caches, addressing oversized app data and restarting. A reset is a configuration wipe, not a routine way to trim temporary files.

Samsung Smart Hub reset
Use this when the Samsung smart platform remains corrupted or reports an impossible storage state after ordinary cleanup. It initializes downloaded apps, removes accounts and settings saved by those apps, and restores Smart Hub preferences to their factory defaults. Have network credentials and streaming logins ready for setup afterward.
Full television reset
Use a full reset only when Smart Hub cleanup and model-specific support have failed, or when you are deliberately preparing the TV for a new owner. It returns all settings to factory defaults and removes installed apps and account configuration. Record custom picture modes, channel settings, accessibility options and connected-device preferences first; cloud services may restore some account data, but they will not preserve every local setting.
LG and other brands
LG’s warning is direct: resetting the TV deletes all account settings and installed apps. Sony, Android TV and Google TV models likewise vary in what a factory reset removes and where the command appears. Read the confirmation screen carefully and cancel if it does not list the data you expect to lose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if storage is still full after cleanup?
The free-space number does not change
Restart the TV and reopen its storage screen. Some systems update the figure only after a reboot or after an app finishes uninstalling. If the number remains unchanged, another large app, offline download or protected system allocation may be responsible; inspect each large app rather than repeatedly clearing the same cache.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn app cannot be uninstalled
It may be pre-installed or required by the TV. Look for Disable only if the manufacturer identifies the service as optional. Removing system packages through unsupported methods can break updates, the launcher or input features, which defeats the purpose of safe cleanup.

Clearing data caused a sign-in problem
Reopen the app and complete its normal sign-in or activation flow. If two-factor authentication, a pairing code or a household PIN is required, retrieve those details before clearing data in future. Content saved only on the TV may be gone, while subscriptions and profiles stored in the provider’s cloud usually return after a successful sign-in.
The USB drive is rejected or keeps disconnecting
Back up the drive, check whether the TV accepts its format, and let the TV perform the format itself instead of preparing it on a computer. Try another compatible port or drive if the model’s documentation allows it. Never unplug adopted storage without using Eject; reconnect it to restore access to apps that depend on it.
The TV fills up again quickly
Identify the app whose cache or data grows repeatedly, then update or reinstall that app if the television provides enough free space. Remove downloaded episodes, games or media inside the app, not just the app’s cache. Keep a small amount of free space available for updates and system housekeeping, but do not rely on an arbitrary percentage because usable capacity differs by model.
Which storage fix should I choose?
Use this decision guide when the warning appears:
- You need a small, low-risk amount of space: clear caches, restart and recheck.
- You need a lasting amount of space and no longer use an app: uninstall it.
- One app consumes abnormal space or will not start: clear its data after recording credentials, then reinstall if necessary.
- You need more capacity for apps on Android TV or Google TV: use a compatible USB drive, back it up, format it on the TV and choose removable versus internal storage based on portability needs.
- Samsung Smart Hub remains damaged after cleanup: perform a Smart Hub reset and plan to sign in again.
- The entire television is misconfigured or being handed over: perform a full factory reset after recording settings and confirming the data-loss warning.
Menu labels are not universal. Samsung, LG, Sony, Android TV and Google TV can place equivalent commands in different screens, and regional firmware can remove an option entirely. If a path is missing, use the model number and software version in the manufacturer’s support instructions instead of forcing a reset or deleting protected files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing a streaming app’s cache cancel my subscription?
No. Cache removal deletes temporary files on the TV, not the provider account or payment agreement. You may still need to wait while the app rebuilds thumbnails and playback data the next time it runs.
What happens if I unplug a USB drive adopted as internal storage?
Apps and data placed on that drive become unavailable while it is disconnected. Reconnect the same drive to restore access; moving it to another television does not make the adopted data portable.
Why is there no Uninstall button for an app on my TV?
The app is probably bundled with the television or protected by its software. Such items may offer Disable or no removal control, so reclaim space by deleting downloadable apps and temporary data instead.
