Start with Windows’ Storage settings, then remove only the categories you understand. Windows can identify temporary files and other cleanup candidates, but caches are not all alike: some are managed automatically, while deleting recovery files can permanently remove your ability to return to a previous Windows version.

Find out what is using space before you delete anything

Open Settings > System > Storage and review the categories shown for your system drive, usually C:. In Windows 11, select Cleanup recommendations from this page to see Windows’ estimates for items such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review the categories and selected items before cleaning; an estimate is not a reason to remove everything listed. See Microsoft’s Windows guide to freeing drive space.

Labels and navigation can vary with the Windows release and device configuration. If you are investigating a drive other than the system drive, use Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings to inspect other drives.

Configure Storage Sense rather than letting it surprise you

Go to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense. Choose whether and when it runs, then check the options governing the Recycle Bin and Downloads. Storage Sense works on the system drive. Its default cleanup covers temporary files and Recycle Bin content; it does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those choices. Microsoft explains the settings in its Storage Sense guide.

Check Downloads before enabling automatic cleanup

Downloads may contain installers or files you still need. If you enable a Downloads retention option, confirm its time period and make sure the folder does not hold anything you intend to keep. You can leave that option off and clean the folder manually instead.

Understand what happens to OneDrive files

Making a locally stored OneDrive file online-only is different from deleting it. Storage Sense’s cloud-content setting does not permanently delete the file; it can be downloaded again when you have network access and enough local space. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt. Check OneDrive’s status before changing how files are stored locally.

Use Windows’ cleanup controls for temporary files and caches

From Settings > System > Storage, open Temporary files, or search for and open Disk Cleanup. Read the description for each category and select only items you are comfortable removing. Disk Cleanup lets you choose temporary and system-file categories; it also provides the explicit Delivery Optimization Files option for that cache. Microsoft describes this category in its Delivery Optimization documentation.

Delivery Optimization temporarily stores downloaded update and app content. Windows clears this cache after a short time or when it grows too large, so clearing it is not usually a necessary routine step. “Cache” is not a single Windows-wide category: individual apps may manage their own cached data, and the Storage Sense guidance does not establish that every app cache is safe to erase.

Keep the previous Windows installation if rollback may matter

Before selecting Previous Windows installation(s) in Temporary files or Disk Cleanup, consider whether you might need to return to the earlier Windows version. Removing this data deletes the previous installation’s recovery files and removes the ability to roll back; Microsoft says this cannot be undone. Windows normally removes the previous installation automatically ten days after an upgrade, but you can remove it sooner only if you accept losing that rollback option. See Microsoft’s guidance on going back to a previous Windows version.

Move personal files you want to keep

If large videos, photos, music, or documents are taking up space, moving files you rarely use is safer than deleting them. In File Explorer, sort a folder by size, choose files you recognize, and move them to an external USB drive or SD card. Microsoft recommends external storage for personal files you want to keep but do not use often. Those files will be available when the storage device is connected and will no longer occupy space on the PC’s internal drive. Moving files is not itself a backup: keep a separate copy if you need backup protection.

Recheck available space and consider update needs

After each cleanup or move, check Settings > System > Storage or This PC in File Explorer. Stop when you have enough room for what you need rather than continuing through every category. Low disk space can interfere with Windows updates, and external storage may help with some update installations; the space required varies by update, so there is no single figure that applies to every PC.

Freeing disk space does not restore Windows support. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; cleanup does not reinstate free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle statement.
