You can usually free hosting storage safely by measuring what is consuming the quota, preserving a restorable copy, and then removing or relocating only content you have confirmed is no longer needed. Start in cPanel at Files > Disk Usage, or use df and du with shell access. Check both ordinary disk capacity and inode usage: a hosting account can have free gigabytes but still be unable to create files when it has exhausted its file-count limit. Keep at least 10% of available server disk space free, move verified backup archives and oversized media off the account, and ask the host about quota or storage separation when cleanup cannot create a safe margin.

Why is my hosting disk space full?

“Disk usage” can mean more than the visible files in your public website directory. Depending on the host and plan, the quota may include website files, databases, email, trash, local backups, logs, cache data and temporary working files. Other plans count some of those areas separately, so the first step is to learn what your provider actually includes.

There are also two different limits:

  • Byte capacity: the number of gigabytes or megabytes occupied by file contents and database data.
  • Inodes: the number of files, directories and other filesystem objects. Thousands of tiny cache files can exhaust inodes while many gigabytes remain free.

cPanel explains that an account at its quota limit may be unable to save files, and that backups can fail when required lock or working files cannot be written. At 100% inode usage, new files or directories cannot be created even if byte capacity is available. Treat a “disk full” warning as a diagnostic problem, not as permission to delete the largest directory immediately.

How do I measure hosting usage before deleting anything?

Measure the account at the same level at which the error occurs, then identify the directories or services responsible. Record the result before and after each cleanup so you can tell which action actually helped.

Use cPanel’s Disk Usage report

  1. Sign in to cPanel.
  2. Open Files > Disk Usage.
  3. Expand the directory tree and sort or inspect it by size. Note large folders under the account home directory, not just public_html.
  4. Record unusually large areas such as local backup folders, mail folders, cache directories, error logs, temporary exports and old archives.
  5. Check whether cPanel separately reports database, email or backup usage. A separate display does not necessarily mean the data is outside your plan’s quota; confirm the provider’s policy.

Do not delete from the report merely because a directory is large. A large directory may contain the live site, a current backup, a mail archive or files required by an application.

Use shell commands when SSH access is available

For filesystem capacity, run:

df -h

To locate large directories beneath a specific account path, run:

du -h --max-depth=1 /path | sort -hr

Replace /path with the account or site directory you are allowed to inspect. Run the command at several levels if the first result only shows a broad home directory. Compare the output with the host’s quota panel; a filesystem can have free capacity while your account quota is exhausted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check inode usage separately

Run:

df -i

This reports inode capacity and use for mounted filesystems. If the percentage is near 100%, count and remove unwanted collections of small files rather than concentrating only on large videos or archives. An inode-aware directory report, where supported by your host’s tools, helps identify cache, session, mail-queue or generated-thumbnail folders with unusually high file counts.

Keep a dated note of total bytes, inode percentage and the largest directories. That record is useful when opening a support ticket because it shows whether a quota increase, a mail-storage change or a migration is the appropriate remedy.

What should I remove first to free hosting storage?

Begin with content that is clearly obsolete, independently backed up and operationally isolated. The safest sequence is usually disposable cache and logs, verified duplicate archives, unwanted media, then old mail or databases after retention checks.

1. Clear disposable cache files

Application and page-cache files can often be regenerated, but not every folder named “cache” is safe to empty. Use the application’s own control panel or documented purge function when available. Confirm that the directory is generated data, not a persistent object store, upload directory or session store. Purging cache generally reduces bytes and may remove many inodes; it is a temporary cleanup because the files can return.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

2. Rotate or remove stale logs

Inspect web-server, application, debug and error logs for dates and growth patterns. Preserve logs required for security investigations, compliance, troubleshooting or a host’s retention policy. Export an older copy if you need an audit trail, then remove only the local files that are no longer required. Large logs reclaim bytes, while one-file-per-event logging can also consume inodes.

3. Find duplicate and obsolete archives

Multiple full-site exports, migration packages and compressed database dumps are common sources of sudden growth. Compare filenames, timestamps and checksums where available. Keep at least one verified, restorable copy and an independent copy outside the hosting account before deleting duplicates. Never treat a file as disposable solely because its name includes “old,” “backup” or a date.

4. Remove unwanted media and generated derivatives

Review the media library for abandoned uploads, duplicate originals and test files. If an image is still referenced by a page, theme, feed or email, deleting it can create broken links. Generate a list of references or use the content system’s media-management screen before removal. Compressing oversized images can reduce bytes without changing URLs, but retain the original elsewhere if future editing requires it.

WordPress.com recommends deleting unwanted media, compressing images and hosting very large files remotely when appropriate. Remote delivery is a design decision: confirm that your site, privacy requirements and traffic costs support it before changing URLs or access controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Remove local copies made by backup plugins

Some backup tools store full archives inside the same hosting account. Those copies protect you only if the account remains available, and they can consume the quota needed to create the next backup. Download or export a backup, test that it can be opened or restored, retain an independent copy, and then remove only older local copies that your retention policy no longer requires. Check the backup tool’s schedule so it does not immediately recreate an unlimited archive set.

6. Review unused databases and database exports

List databases in the hosting control panel and map each one to a live site, staging instance or application. An old installation may have both a database and a directory, so removing only one may save little and leave confusing data behind. Export a verified copy before dropping an unused database, and check whether your host includes database storage in the same quota.

7. Check email folders, spam and trash

Mail attachments and retained messages can occupy more space than website files. Ask the account owner before deleting mail, and check legal, business or provider retention requirements. Emptying spam and trash can reclaim bytes and inodes, but it is not reversible through the mailbox after the retention window expires. For long-term archives, use an approved mail archive or separate storage rather than keeping every attachment in the hosting quota.

Action Typical space reclaimed Bytes, inodes or both? Deletion risk Reversibility after a verified backup Effect on site or mail Cleanup type
Purge regenerable cache Small to large; depends on cache age Both, especially when many small files exist Low only when the application identifies it as disposable Usually easy to regenerate May make the next requests slower while cache rebuilds Temporary
Rotate stale logs Small to large; rapidly growing logs can be substantial Bytes; sometimes inodes Medium if records are needed for compliance or diagnosis Restorable if exported first No direct site effect when only closed, archived logs are removed Temporary unless retention is automated
Delete duplicate backup archives Large, often multiple archive files Bytes and one inode per archive High if no independent, tested copy remains Only after a verified external copy No live-site effect; may affect recovery options Temporary unless storage is redesigned
Remove unwanted media Small to large, depending on originals and derivatives Both Medium to high if references are missed Restorable from an external copy Broken images or downloads if still referenced Durable
Move large media off-account Large and recurring Bytes; usually fewer local inodes Medium during URL, permission or migration changes Good when the old copy is retained until links are tested Can affect delivery, access controls and performance Durable redesign
Delete old mail or trash Small to large Both Medium to high because recovery may be impossible Limited after deletion and retention expiry Removes messages and attachments for mailbox users Temporary unless retention changes
Drop an unused database Small to large Bytes and database objects High if the application mapping is wrong Only with a tested export Can take an application offline if it is still used Durable

“Large” is intentionally relative: the actual result depends on your account. Measure after each action instead of assuming a particular category will solve the quota problem.

How do I fix inode usage when I still have free gigabytes?

Find the directory containing the greatest number of small files, then remove only confirmed-unused data or change the application that creates it. Common candidates include generated thumbnails, session files, cache entries, mail fragments, temporary exports and abandoned staging copies.

  1. Run df -i and record the filesystem with the highest inode percentage.
  2. Use cPanel’s Disk Usage tree or an inode-aware directory count to locate high-file-count directories.
  3. Open the application or hosting documentation to determine whether those files are cache, sessions, queued mail, uploads or live data.
  4. Use the application’s purge or rotation function where possible. If you must delete manually, stop or pause the writer when the host requires it so files are not recreated during cleanup.
  5. Keep system-critical paths and provider-managed directories intact. If a path belongs to the operating system, control panel or mail service and its purpose is unclear, ask the host before changing it.
  6. Recheck df -i, test uploads and review logs after cleanup.

cPanel Support reported that its updater requires at least 360,000 free inodes at /usr/local/cpanel (2023). That is a cPanel system requirement, not a universal allowance for every hosting account, but it illustrates why inode headroom matters. cPanel Support also states (2026) that 100% inode usage prevents creation of new files or directories.

How do I move backups and large files off my hosting account?

Off-site storage is the durable fix for archives that must be retained but do not need to occupy the web host. An external hard drive can hold downloaded hosting archives; it increases your own backup capacity, not the host’s quota. Managed cloud or object storage is another option for off-site website backups and large media, provided you configure access, encryption, retention and restore testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a fresh backup or export from the host or application.
  2. Download it to an external drive or approved remote storage.
  3. Verify the transfer by checking the archive can be opened, listing its contents or performing a test restore in a safe location.
  4. Keep an independent copy in a different failure domain. Two copies on the same hosting account are not independent.
  5. Document the archive date, site version, database credentials location and retention deadline without placing secrets in an unsecured note.
  6. Only after verification, remove the redundant local archive from the hosting account.
  7. Change the backup schedule so future copies go directly off-account or are pruned automatically.

For large media, migrate files in batches, update references, test anonymous and authenticated access, and monitor error logs before deleting the originals. Check regional privacy, copyright and data-residency requirements before selecting remote storage.

Why can’t I upload files when the control panel shows free space?

The account may have exhausted inodes, hit a separate per-account quota, or lack space for temporary working files even though a summary panel shows free bytes. A failed upload can also reflect a file-size, permissions or application limit rather than storage.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Check df -h for filesystem bytes and df -i for inodes.
  • Review cPanel’s quota and Disk Usage screens for the account, mail and database areas.
  • Inspect the application’s temporary and upload directories; a conversion process may need additional working space.
  • Read the exact error in the application and web-server logs before changing permissions or deleting files.
  • Retry with a small test file after cleanup, then restore normal uploads.

If inode usage is full, deleting a few large archives may not solve the problem; remove an identified collection of unwanted small files. If the host reports a quota mismatch, provide the recorded measurements to support rather than repeatedly deleting live content.

How much free space should I keep?

cPanel & WHM Documentation (2026) states: “We strongly recommend that you keep at least 10% of your server’s available disk space free.” Treat that as a minimum operating margin, not a target to consume immediately. The margin gives uploads, log rotation, database maintenance and backup jobs room to create temporary and lock files.

Set alerts below your own operational threshold if the host provides monitoring. A site that receives frequent media uploads or generates large backups needs more headroom than a static site with predictable files. Monitor inode percentage as well as bytes; a 10% byte margin does not protect an account that is near its inode limit.

How do I prevent hosting storage from filling again?

Prevention combines retention rules, off-site storage and regular measurement rather than one large deletion event.

  • Set backup retention: keep the number of daily, weekly and monthly copies you can restore and justify; prune older local copies automatically.
  • Separate storage roles: keep live web files on the host and long-term archives or oversized media elsewhere when the application supports it.
  • Control media growth: define image dimensions and compression standards before upload, and remove test assets after publishing.
  • Rotate logs: cap debug verbosity in production and retain exported logs only for the period required by operations or policy.
  • Review mail retention: publish mailbox limits, archive rules and responsibility for large attachments.
  • Watch inodes: investigate applications that create a file per request, session or thumbnail and configure cleanup or aggregation.
  • Measure monthly: save a short report of byte usage, inode usage and the top directories so growth is visible before an outage.
  • Test restores: a backup that cannot be restored is not a reason to keep unlimited copies on the production account.

When should I ask my host for more storage or move the site?

Escalate when confirmed-unused data has been removed, verified archives have been moved off-account, and the site still cannot maintain a safe margin. Quota increases are controlled by the hosting provider; ask whether a larger plan, separate mail or backup storage, or a migration is available.

Before contacting support, provide the account’s byte and inode measurements, the largest directories, the cleanup already completed, and the storage you must retain. Ask specifically whether databases, mail and backups share one quota, whether provider-managed snapshots count, and whether the host can supply separate storage. A migration is justified when the required data is legitimate and recurring, the current plan cannot provide adequate headroom, or operational services compete for the same quota.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can deleting files from cPanel permanently break my website?

Yes. Removing a referenced upload, active theme file, dependency or database can take pages or the entire site offline. Before deletion, map the item to a live application and keep a tested copy outside the account; when the purpose is unclear, ask the host or application maintainer instead of guessing.

Does moving backups to an external drive solve a hosting quota problem?

It solves the quota problem only after the verified local copy is removed; the drive itself does not increase the host’s allowance. Keep the drive protected from loss, ransomware and hardware failure, and maintain another independent copy for important sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my disk usage increase again after I cleaned it?

A scheduled backup, verbose debug log, cache rebuild, mail attachment or thumbnail generator may have recreated the data. Compare your before-and-after directory notes, identify the writer, and change its retention or destination rather than repeatedly deleting symptoms.

Are hosting snapshots or provider backups included in my quota?

There is no universal rule. Some plans count databases, mail and backups together, while others separate them or keep provider snapshots outside the customer quota; ask your host for the exact accounting and retention policy.

How often should I check inode usage?

Check it whenever uploads fail unexpectedly and include it in regular storage reviews. Sites that generate many sessions, thumbnails, cache entries or mail fragments should monitor inode growth more frequently than sites with a small, stable file set.
