Open the suspect game’s Steam store page and choose Report this Product—the control appears as a blue flag on the right side of the page. Describe the specific listing, image, claim, or discrepancy that concerns you. Use a different route for a scammer’s account, a review or Workshop item, a copyright claim, a trademark claim, or a refund. Valve’s current public guidance does not establish the exact choices in the product-report dialog, a response deadline, guaranteed removal, or a case-status notification, so report only what you can describe accurately.
Which Steam reporting route matches the problem?
Start by identifying what is actually wrong: the game’s store listing, a person’s account, an individual community item, protected intellectual property, malware, or a purchase. Sending the wrong type of report can obscure the issue and does not substitute for a formal rights complaint or refund request.
| Concern | Use this route | What to explain |
|---|---|---|
| A game page copies another game, misrepresents its content, impersonates a creator, or otherwise misleads buyers | Report this Product on that game’s store page | Name the exact listing and describe the specific text, image, claim, or discrepancy you observed. |
| A Steam account scams or impersonates someone during an interaction | That profile’s … → Report Player control | Describe the interaction and include useful account-context information. |
| A review, screenshot, artwork, Workshop item, or discussion post is the problem | The individual item’s gear/flag control or the post’s report menu | Report the contribution itself rather than the whole game listing. |
| Your copyrighted work is allegedly copied | Valve’s Notice of Copyright Infringement form | Identify the Valve-hosted material, your original work, your contact details, and the required declaration. |
| Your trademark is allegedly being used | Valve’s separate Trademark Complaint Form | Identify the challenged content, trademark numbers, filing countries, explanation, contact details, and signature. |
| You bought the game and want your money back | A separate Steam Support refund request | Explain the purchase problem truthfully; reporting a listing does not start a refund. |
These routes address different objects and outcomes. A product report asks Valve to review a listing; a rights form is a formal claim by a rights holder or authorized representative; a refund request concerns your transaction.

- Open the exact suspect store page. Check the title and publisher so you do not flag a similarly named game or the original work by mistake.
- Open Report this Product. The report dialog is interactive, and its current reason labels are not established here; choose the option that most closely matches what you actually observed rather than guessing at a legal category.
- Describe the concrete discrepancy. State what the page says or shows, what you encountered, and why the two do not match. For a suspected copycat, identify the allegedly copied title, artwork, screenshots, description, or other material and identify the original you are comparing it with.
- Keep the wording factual. “The store page uses the same character image and title treatment as the earlier game” is an observation. “This is proven copyright infringement” is a legal conclusion you may not be able to establish.
- Submit through the product control. Save your own notes or screenshots before submitting if the page may change. Valve’s public material does not promise that every report receives a status message or state how quickly a decision will be made.
Steam’s conduct rules address fraud, impersonation, malware, and intellectual-property violations. Steamworks documentation also describes checking a submitted build against its store-page representation. Those rules support reporting a concrete mismatch, but resemblance alone does not prove a legal violation.
What details make a product report useful?
A concise chronology and precise comparison are more useful than a long accusation. Organize your information before opening the form.
- Identify the listing: record the game title, developer or publisher name as displayed, and the store page you opened.
- Quote or describe the claim: note the exact promise, feature description, image, trailer element, price representation, or identity claim that appears misleading.
- Explain the discrepancy: say what the game actually showed or did, or which material appears copied, and identify the relevant original or expectation.
- Separate facts from suspicion: label an antivirus alert, visual resemblance, or unverified theory as an alert or observation—not confirmed malware or infringement.
- Use a neutral sequence: “The page advertises X; after purchase or launch, I saw Y; the matching material is Z.”
Valve’s guidance does not establish that a particular attachment, screenshot, URL, or format is mandatory for a product report. Include only information you can support, and do not submit someone else’s personal information unnecessarily.
How do I report a scammer or impersonating Steam account?
If the harmful conduct came from a person in chat, comments, or another interaction, report the account rather than the game listing. Open that account’s profile, select the … menu, choose Report Player, select the applicable violation, and briefly describe the interaction.
Include the account name, what the person asked you to do, and the relevant context—such as a request for credentials, payment, or a claim that they represent Valve. Valve says profile reports contain useful account-interaction information and are preferable to sending a support ticket about a scammer.
If the same incident also involves a misleading game page, file the product report separately. A profile report does not replace a product report, and a product report does not document the account interaction.

How do I report a deceptive review, screenshot, artwork, Workshop item, or discussion post?
Report the individual community contribution through its own control. Use the item’s gear or flag control, or the report menu on a discussion post, and explain what is deceptive, abusive, or otherwise problematic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This distinction matters when a game itself is legitimate but one review, screenshot, artwork item, Workshop submission, or discussion message is not. Reporting the whole store product for a single community post can send the complaint to the wrong review path.
When should I file a copyright complaint instead of a product report?
Use Valve’s Notice of Copyright Infringement form when you are the copyright owner or an authorized representative and are making a formal claim about material hosted on Valve’s systems. A casual observer who thinks two games look alike generally should use the product-report route and describe the observable similarity instead.
The copyright form asks for:
- the URL of the allegedly infringing content on Valve’s systems;
- a description of the material that was copied;
- information identifying your original work;
- claimant contact information; and
- a signed declaration.
Read the form’s declaration and false-claim warning before signing. It warns that knowingly materially false infringement claims can have consequences and that information in the notice may be shared or made public. Do not use the form as leverage in a dispute when you cannot truthfully make the required rights-holder statements.
How is a trademark complaint different?
Trademark allegations use Valve’s separate Trademark Complaint Form, not the copyright notice. The form asks you to identify the challenged content, provide trademark registration numbers and the countries where they were filed, explain the claim, and supply contact details and a signature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLike the copyright process, the trademark form includes warnings about sharing complaint information. If you are not the owner or authorized representative, describe the suspected impersonation or misleading listing through the product-report route instead of signing a formal complaint on someone else’s behalf.

What if antivirus software flags the game?
If an antivirus product flags the app and you are not confident the detection is a false positive, flag the game on its store page and include what happened and the antivirus detection details. Also consult the antivirus provider so the alert can be investigated independently.
Do not write that the game is confirmed malware solely because one scan produced an alert. Valve cautions that false positives occur. State the product name, the detection wording, when it appeared, and whether the game was blocked or quarantined, while making clear that the result is an unverified detection unless you have authoritative confirmation.
Can reporting a game get my money back?
No. A store-page report and a refund request are separate processes. If you bought the game, open a separate request through Steam Support and explain the purchase problem truthfully.
Valve’s standard Steam-store game refund offer is for requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of play. Valve also says that users outside those rules may still ask for a refund for review; that statement is not an automatic approval and does not remove any regional, product, or purchase-specific conditions.
“There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.”
Valve, Steam Refunds policy, last updated 2024
Reporting a copycat or misleading listing does not itself reverse the charge. Submit the refund request independently and avoid claiming facts about your purchase that are not true.

What does Steam’s conduct policy mean for a report?
Steam’s rules identify fraud, impersonation, malware, and intellectual-property violations as conduct concerns. Steamworks content-survey documentation states: “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” A report gives Valve a specific listing or interaction to review; it does not establish the violation by itself.

For that reason, distinguish among three levels of information:
- Observed: a store description promises a feature that the launched product did not provide, or an account asked for a password.
- Compared: a title, image, or other asset appears to reproduce identifiable material from an earlier work.
- Proven: a formal rights holder can substantiate ownership and make the declarations required by a legal complaint.
Use the first two levels to write a clear product or account report. Reserve the third for a rights-holder process when you can meet its requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I expect after submitting?
Expect the report to enter Valve’s review process, but do not promise a particular outcome. The available guidance does not verify a response deadline, a guaranteed removal, an exact set of report-dialog categories, or a notification that tells you how the case was resolved.
The listing may change while a report is under review. Keep a private record of the page, wording, and dates that matter to your complaint, and submit a new, focused report only when there is a distinct new issue—not repeated copies of the same unsupported accusation.

How do I avoid “accidental report” scams?
A message claiming that your Steam account was “accidentally reported” and that you must contact an agent, transfer money, or reveal credentials is itself a common scam pattern. Valve says false reports are disregarded and warns users not to send credentials or payment to a purported agent reached through chat to “fix” an alleged accidental report.
- Do not follow a stranger’s support link from chat.
- Do not give anyone your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or payment information.
- Use Steam’s own account and support interfaces instead of an intermediary who claims special access.
- Report the account using its profile’s Report Player flow if it attempted the scam.
Quick checklist before you click Submit
- Confirm that you are on the exact suspect game’s store page.
- Decide whether the issue is the product page, an account, a community item, protected rights, malware, or a refund.
- Write down the exact claim, image, interaction, or detection that concerns you.
- Describe what you observed and what it conflicts with; do not state an unproven legal conclusion as fact.
- Use the dedicated copyright or trademark form only if you are the owner or authorized representative and can complete its declaration truthfully.
- Submit a separate Steam Support refund request if you want your purchase reviewed.
- Ignore anyone who asks for credentials or payment to resolve an alleged accidental report.
These steps give Valve a correctly routed, specific account of the problem while keeping product moderation, community reporting, intellectual-property complaints, security alerts, and refunds in their proper channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I report a Steam game even if I have not bought it?
The product-page route is tied to the public listing, not to a refund or proof of purchase. Describe what the page claims or displays and avoid presenting an unverified suspicion as a proven violation.
What should I save before a misleading store page changes?
Record the game title, publisher as displayed, the wording or image at issue, and the date you saw it. Private notes or screenshots can help you describe the discrepancy accurately, although Valve’s public guidance does not make a particular attachment mandatory.
Is a bad or unfinished game automatically reportable?
Poor quality or a simple dislike is not the same as fraud, impersonation, malware, or an inaccurate store representation. Report a concrete mismatch or prohibited conduct rather than using the report control as a general review.
Can I withdraw a copyright or trademark complaint after sending it?
The forms’ declarations and information-sharing warnings mean you should verify ownership, authority, and accuracy before signing. If circumstances change, use the contact or follow-up method provided by the relevant form instead of submitting contradictory duplicate claims.
Where can I find the current refund rules for a special purchase?
Use Steam Support for the transaction and check the terms shown for that purchase and your region. The commonly stated 14-day and under-two-hour standard applies to Valve’s standard game-refund offer, while requests outside it may still be reviewed rather than automatically approved.
