If Xbox Cloud Gaming controls are not working on your Steam Deck, use Microsoft’s documented Edge setup: install Edge in Desktop Mode, add it to Steam as a non-Steam game, grant it read-only access to /run/udev, and apply Steam’s Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad layout to the shortcut. Launch the session from that Steam shortcut. If input still fails, check Steam Input, restart Edge and Steam, and test with one controller at a time.

This procedure separates three possible causes: the browser cannot read the Deck’s controller devices, Steam is not applying a profile to the launch path, or the cloud game is using a different input mode. Work through the layers in that order instead of repeatedly changing browser window settings.

Why can Xbox Cloud Gaming ignore Steam Deck controls?

For the documented Edge route, input depends on more than opening the Xbox cloud gaming site in a browser. Edge needs permission to access the Deck’s device information, and Steam needs to apply a controller layout to the shortcut used to launch Edge. Opening a separate browser window instead of the Steam library shortcut can bypass that shortcut’s Steam Input profile.

There is also an important support limitation: Microsoft says, “Microsoft does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official support for Microsoft Edge on SteamOS at this time.” The package is community maintained, so package updates or SteamOS changes may affect behavior. The steps below are Microsoft’s documented practical route, not a guarantee of official SteamOS support.

What needs to be in place before troubleshooting?

Use Desktop Mode for installation and configuration. You need the Microsoft Edge Flatpak installed from Discover, Steam installed and running, and access to Konsole so you can apply the per-user permission command. You also need to launch the cloud session from the Edge entry in your Steam library, not from an unrelated browser icon.

The controller itself must be visible to SteamOS. For the built-in controls, this means the Deck is functioning normally outside the browser. For an external pad, pair or connect only one controller initially and check Steam’s controller overlay before you open the cloud session. This prevents two separate connection problems from being mistaken for one browser problem.

Finally, remember that browser input support is game-specific. A browser that can receive keyboard or mouse events is not proof that every Xbox Cloud Gaming title accepts those events. Controller support and keyboard-and-mouse support are separate checks.

How do I set up Edge and Steam Input correctly?

Complete these steps in order. The udev permission and the controller layout address input; display flags such as kiosk mode and scaling are optional presentation settings.

  1. Install Edge in Desktop Mode. Open Discover, find Microsoft Edge, and install it. Switch to Desktop Mode if necessary to use Discover and Konsole. The package is a Flatpak, and Microsoft identifies it as community maintained rather than an officially supported SteamOS package.
  2. Add Edge to Steam. Open Steam in Desktop Mode, choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, select Microsoft Edge, and add it. Give the shortcut a recognizable name if you prefer, but keep using this library entry for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Steam Input profiles are associated with this shortcut.
  3. Grant Edge read-only access to udev. Open Konsole and run:
    flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge

The --user option applies the override to your account instead of changing a system-wide setting. The /run/udev path is the device-information location Edge needs for the documented controller route, and :ro limits the access to read-only. This is the key permission step; changing the browser window size does not substitute for it.

  4. Close and relaunch Edge. Quit any Edge process that was already open, then start it again. A running browser may not pick up a Flatpak permission change until it has been restarted. If you applied the command while Edge was open, close it completely before testing.
  5. Assign the documented controller layout. In Steam, open the Edge shortcut’s controller layout, choose Browse Configs, select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad, apply it, and return to Gaming Mode. This template gives the shortcut a gamepad-oriented mapping while retaining mouse-style controls for browser interfaces.
  6. Launch the Xbox cloud session from Steam. Start the Edge shortcut from your Steam library and open https://www.xbox.com/play. Do not switch to a separate desktop browser window for the actual session, because the Steam Input profile belongs to the shortcut you configured.

Microsoft’s guide also gives an optional launch-command example for presentation: --window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play", appended after the existing Flatpak arguments. The window-size, scale-factor, and kiosk flags control how the page is displayed. They do not grant device access and do not replace the udev override or the Steam controller layout.

What should I check when Steam Deck buttons do nothing?

Work through the checks in sequence, changing one thing at a time so you can identify where input stops being recognized.

Confirm the execution path

Close any browser window opened independently from the desktop. In Gaming Mode, select the Edge entry you added as a non-Steam game and launch it. If you start Edge from Discover, a desktop taskbar icon, or another browser window, Steam may not apply the profile you configured for the library shortcut.

Reapply the permission and restart Edge

Return to Desktop Mode, open Konsole, and run the exact command again:

flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge

Then quit Edge, wait for its window to close, and relaunch it from Steam. Reapplying the command is useful after an Edge package update or a SteamOS change, because the community-maintained Flatpak can behave differently after updates.

Verify the shortcut’s layout

Open the Edge shortcut’s controller settings, choose the layout editor or browse screen, and confirm that Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad is the active configuration. If Steam Input is disabled for this shortcut, the selected mapping cannot be applied to that launch path. Reapply the template and test again rather than assuming a layout selected for another game will carry over.

Check Steam’s controller detection first

Before launching Xbox Cloud Gaming, open Steam’s controller overlay and verify that the Deck controls or your single external controller are visible. If Steam does not see the controller there, the browser cannot fix that lower-level problem. Disconnect other gamepads, reconnect the one you want to test, and confirm detection again.

Restart both applications when state is unclear

Close Edge and restart Steam after changing the override or shortcut layout. A full restart clears a stale launch process and makes it easier to tell whether the new permission and profile were loaded. Launch Edge only through the Steam shortcut after both applications are running again.

Check which input mode the game is using

Xbox says browser keyboard-and-mouse support can coexist with controller use in supported games. Pressing a keyboard key or the controller’s Xbox button can switch the active input mode. If you tested with the keyboard and the game then seems to ignore the controller, press the Xbox button once and retry. This is an input-mode switch, not evidence that the controller has disconnected.

Isolate one controller path

Disconnect other gamepads, pair or connect one controller, and verify that Steam’s controller overlay sees it before starting the cloud session. If the Deck controls work but an external pad does not, repair its Bluetooth pairing or test a wired connection. If the external controller works while the Deck controls do not, keep that result: it shows that the cloud session and Edge can accept controller input, narrowing the problem to the built-in path or its mapping.

How do I get Steam Input working with Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Steam Input is tied to the non-Steam Edge shortcut, so the important test is not whether Steam Input works in another game. Open the specific Edge entry, inspect its controller layout, and apply the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template there. Then launch that same entry in Gaming Mode.

If a different Steam game has a custom layout, that does not automatically configure Edge. Likewise, changing Edge’s layout does not create a universal mapping for every other game. Treat the browser shortcut as its own profile. When you are diagnosing, avoid editing several profiles at once; otherwise you will not know which change restored input.

The documented path also depends on Edge being able to read the Deck’s device information. A correct Steam profile with no /run/udev access can still produce a session in which buttons do nothing. Conversely, the permission alone does not tell Steam which buttons and trackpad actions to send. Both steps are required.

Should I use the built-in controls, Bluetooth, or a wired controller?

The built-in controls are the simplest first test because they avoid a separate pairing step. A Bluetooth or wired controller is a useful diagnostic or fallback, but all three routes still depend on the shortcut’s Steam Input setup and on the cloud game supporting the selected input mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Input route Setup effort Steam Input Pairing or cable considerations Portability Game input support
Built-in Deck controls No separate controller pairing Use the shortcut’s Steam Input layout No Bluetooth pairing or controller cable Always with the Deck The particular cloud game must support the selected input mode
External Bluetooth controller Pair the controller and verify Steam detects it Use the shortcut’s Steam Input layout Bluetooth pairing must be working; pairing reliability is not stated in Microsoft’s cited materials No controller cable, but requires carrying another device The particular cloud game must support the selected input mode
External wired controller Connect it and verify Steam detects it Use the shortcut’s Steam Input layout Requires a cable; avoids Bluetooth pairing for that connection Less convenient when a cable is impractical The particular cloud game must support the selected input mode

If the Deck’s built-in controls remain unusable after the software checks, an Xbox Wireless Controller is a reasonable hardware fallback. Microsoft documents Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless connectivity and compatibility across PC, mobile, and console. That general compatibility does not guarantee a particular Deck connection; it still depends on SteamOS, Bluetooth state, controller firmware, and Steam Input.

Use Bluetooth when portability matters and pairing is already stable. A wired controller is a useful diagnostic because it avoids Bluetooth pairing for that connection, although the cable can be inconvenient. A USB-C cable or an Xbox rechargeable battery pack is relevant only when your connection or controller power is the immediate problem; neither accessory replaces the Edge permission or Steam layout.

Why might keyboard and mouse work while the controller does not?

Browser keyboard-and-mouse support is not universal across Xbox cloud games. Xbox’s May 15, 2024 rollout listed 25 titles for browser mouse-and-keyboard support, including Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and Fortnite (browser only). A supported browser and a supported game are separate requirements, so working keyboard input does not establish that every game accepts that input mode.

Use the controller for a title that expects gamepad input, and check the active mode if you moved between keyboard and controller testing. In games that support both, pressing the Xbox button can switch back to controller input. If the title is not part of the supported keyboard-and-mouse group, do not treat missing mouse controls as a Steam Deck failure; use a controller layout instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the kiosk command change?

The optional command can make the cloud page fit the Deck display more predictably: --window-size=1024,640 sets the starting window dimensions, the two scale-factor flags adjust rendering scale, and --kiosk opens the specified Xbox page in a presentation without ordinary browser chrome. These flags can improve visibility and reduce desktop navigation, but they are not input permissions.

If controls are missing, troubleshoot the udev override and Steam Input profile first. Removing or changing the kiosk flags may alter how the page looks while leaving controller behavior unchanged. Keep the launch command simple until input works, then add presentation options if you want them.

What if an external controller works but the Deck buttons do not?

That result indicates that the cloud session can receive controller input through the configured Edge shortcut, while the built-in path still needs attention. Reopen the shortcut layout and confirm the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template is active. Then verify the Deck controls appear in Steam’s controller overlay before launching Edge.

If the Deck controls work but the external controller does not, remove other paired gamepads, repair the Bluetooth pairing, and test a wired connection. Keep the working route as a temporary workaround. The external controller’s PC, mobile, and console compatibility does not remove the need for SteamOS detection and Steam Input mapping on the Deck.

What if none of these steps restores input?

Use the Steam controller overlay to separate a SteamOS detection problem from a cloud-session problem: first confirm Steam sees one controller, then launch the session from the Edge shortcut with the documented layout. If that path fails after the permission and layout checks, restart both Steam and Edge, then repeat the test with one controller and no other gamepads connected.

If an external controller works but the built-in controls do not, or vice versa, keep the working route as a temporary workaround while narrowing down the failing connection or mapping. The available Microsoft materials do not publish a Steam Deck-specific input failure rate, latency figure, or guaranteed compatibility matrix, so a particular fix cannot be promised for every SteamOS or package version.

Reader checklist: Xbox Cloud Gaming controls not working on Steam Deck

  1. Use Desktop Mode to install Microsoft Edge from Discover.
  2. Add that Edge installation to Steam as a non-Steam game.
  3. Run flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge in Konsole.
  4. Close and relaunch Edge after applying the override.
  5. Apply Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad to the Edge shortcut.
  6. Return to Gaming Mode and launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from that shortcut.
  7. Confirm Steam detects one controller before starting the session.
  8. Press the controller’s Xbox button if keyboard testing changed the active input mode.
  9. Try Bluetooth or wired Xbox hardware only after the software path is verified.
  10. Remember that browser keyboard-and-mouse support covers a limited, title-specific list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Edge kiosk command fix controller input?

No. Its window-size, scaling, and kiosk flags change how Edge is presented, not how Steam maps controller input. They are optional; the permission override and the Steam shortcut layout are the input-related steps.

Can I use the same controller in other games after changing this layout?

The documented layout is assigned to the Edge shortcut, so it is a profile for launching that browser rather than a universal controller setting. If another game behaves differently, check that game’s own Steam controller layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Microsoft Edge on SteamOS officially supported?

Microsoft Support says it does not actively maintain the Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official Edge support on SteamOS. Package or SteamOS changes may therefore affect the setup, even when the documented steps have been followed.

Why does launching Edge from the desktop matter?

Steam Input mappings apply to the non-Steam Edge shortcut. A separate desktop browser window may not use that shortcut’s profile, so launch Edge from the Steam library entry you configured.

What does the /run/udev override do?

The command grants the Edge Flatpak read-only access to /run/udev for your user account. That device-information access is the documented permission step for the Deck controller path; close and relaunch Edge after applying it.

Do I need an Xbox Wireless Controller?

No. Test the built-in Deck controls first. An Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional fallback because Microsoft documents Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless connectivity, but the Deck still must detect it and apply Steam Input.

Why does keyboard input work in one cloud game but not another?

Xbox’s May 15, 2024 browser rollout listed 25 supported titles, including Halo Infinite, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and Fortnite (browser only). Keyboard-and-mouse support is title-dependent, so it does not establish that every game accepts that input mode.

Should I test Bluetooth or a wired controller first?

Use whichever isolates your problem. Bluetooth avoids a cable but requires successful pairing; a wired controller avoids Bluetooth pairing for that connection but requires a cable. In both cases, verify Steam sees one controller and keep the Edge shortcut’s layout active.

What if pressing keyboard keys made the controller stop responding?

In supported games, Xbox can switch active input mode when a keyboard key or the controller’s Xbox button is pressed. Press the Xbox button once and retry the controller before changing the browser setup.

The Bottom Line

The dependable troubleshooting path is Edge from Discover, added to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut, granted read-only /run/udev access, and assigned the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad layout. Launch xbox.com/play from that shortcut, verify Steam sees one controller, and test an Xbox Wireless or wired controller only if the built-in controls remain broken.
