If a Windows screen recording is black, first check whether the window contains protected video or is unsupported; the recorder may be working as designed. If the recording has no sound, check the capture tool’s audio settings and Windows’ selected output device. On Windows 11, Xbox Game Bar can record an app or game with system audio when its Capturing setting is set to “All”; Snipping Tool records a selected region, but Microsoft said in a March 6, 2023 article that audio recording was not supported there at that time.

What should I check first when a Windows recording fails?

Identify which recorder you used, then separate a picture problem from a sound problem. Xbox Game Bar is intended for app and game capture; Windows 11’s Snipping Tool records a selected screen region. Their controls and audio capabilities differ, so the right fix depends on the tool.

  1. Identify the recorder. Was it Xbox Game Bar or Snipping Tool? If you used another recorder, these built-in-tool steps may not apply.
  2. For a black recording, test an ordinary window. Record a normal, non-protected window. Microsoft lists protected video or content and unsupported windows among common reasons a recording may fail.
  3. For a silent recording, check the capture setting. In Game Bar, set Capturing audio to “All” if you want apps and system sounds included.
  4. Check whether Windows itself is producing sound. Confirm the intended output device is selected and that its connection and volume are correct. If Windows audio is not working, use the Windows 11 Get Help audio troubleshooter before changing recorder settings repeatedly.

These checks help distinguish three different issues: content that cannot be captured, a recorder setting that excludes sound, and an underlying Windows audio problem.

How do I fix a silent Xbox Game Bar recording?

Enable Game Bar if necessary, then set its capture audio to “All.” Microsoft says that setting includes app and system sounds, which is the relevant choice when you want the sound playing on the computer in the recording.

Enable Game Bar and include system sound

  1. Press Windows key+I to open Windows Settings.
  2. Search Settings for Xbox and enable Xbox Game Bar if it is off.
  3. Press Windows+G to open the Game Bar overlay.
  4. Open Settings, then Capturing.
  5. Under audio to record, select All so apps and system sounds are included.

Microsoft’s support instructions emphasize including computer sounds when you want them in the finished recording. Selecting a different audio scope can leave the video without the sounds you expected.

Record and check the file

  1. Open the app or game you intend to capture.
  2. Press Windows+Alt+R to start recording. Press the same shortcut to stop.
  3. If you also need to narrate, press Windows+Alt+M to toggle the microphone.
  4. Find the MP4 in Videos > Captures and play it back.

System audio and microphone narration are separate concerns: the All capture choice addresses app and system sounds, while the microphone shortcut toggles the mic. If the recording is still silent, check that Windows is playing sound through the output device you intend to use and troubleshoot Windows audio itself.

Why is my Windows screen recording black?

A black file does not by itself prove that the recorder is broken. Microsoft identifies protected video or content and unsupported windows as common reasons capture may not work; changing audio settings will not resolve those picture restrictions.

Test with a normal window

Try recording a non-protected window, such as a regular app window. If that recording shows the screen, but a particular video or window remains black, the failure is likely tied to the content or window rather than a general capture failure. Protected playback may remain black in Windows’ built-in recording workflows.

Try the other built-in capture approach where appropriate

Microsoft’s Windows 11 FAQ suggests trying Snipping Tool when Game Bar cannot record an app or content. That is a useful test for an unsupported Game Bar window, but it is not a way around protected content: protected video may still fail to appear in native capture tools.

Snipping Tool captures a selected rectangle rather than an app or game through Game Bar. To start a Snipping Tool video capture, open Snipping Tool, choose Video, select New, drag over the region you want, and select Start. Microsoft’s Surface support instructions also say Windows+Shift+R opens the video overlay.

Can Snipping Tool record system audio?

Microsoft’s Windows Learning Center article, published March 6, 2023, said: “Audio recording is not yet supported.” That statement describes the feature status reported in that article on that date; features can change, so check the current Snipping Tool controls on your Windows installation rather than assuming that dated limitation is permanent.

Snipping Tool can be useful when you need to capture a selected region on Windows 11, but if sound is essential, Game Bar’s “All” audio setting is the documented built-in route in this guidance for including apps and system sounds. For a Windows 10 screen recording, Microsoft’s Surface support instructions point users to Clipchamp.

What should I do if sound is missing throughout Windows?

If other apps are silent too, fix Windows audio before treating the recording as a capture-only issue. Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Get Help audio troubleshooter in Windows 11, then checking the output device, connections, volume, updates, restart, and driver state.

  1. Run the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
  2. Select the intended sound output device in Windows and confirm that speakers or headphones are connected correctly.
  3. Check the device and Windows volume levels.
  4. Install available Windows updates, then restart the PC.
  5. If sound still does not work, open Device Manager and update the audio driver. If the issue began after a driver change, try rolling it back; if needed, replace the driver.

These checks address Windows audio output. They do not make protected video recordable, and they do not change which audio sources a recorder captures. Once Windows playback works, return to the recorder’s capture settings and make a short test recording.

Which Windows recorder should I use?

Choose based on what you need to capture and whether sound matters. Microsoft documents both Game Bar and Snipping Tool as built-in Windows 11 options, but their capture scope and audio behavior differ.

Neither switching tools nor changing an audio setting guarantees that protected material will appear. Use an ordinary window as a control test, then choose the recorder that matches the region or app you need to capture.

How can I verify the fix?

Make one short recording of a normal, non-protected window, then play the saved file from beginning to end. Confirm that the picture is visible and that the expected sound is present; if the sound is missing, note whether Windows playback itself works and whether you needed system audio, microphone narration, or both.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I open the Windows 11 screen recording controls quickly?

For Snipping Tool’s video overlay, Microsoft’s Surface support instructions list Windows+Shift+R. If you use Xbox Game Bar instead, Windows+G opens its overlay.

Can I use Xbox Game Bar to record my voice as well as computer sound?

Game Bar has a separate microphone toggle: Windows+Alt+M. Whether the mic is on is distinct from selecting “All” for app and system sounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a black recording mean Windows blocked the entire app?

Not necessarily. Microsoft lists unsupported windows as well as protected video or content among possible causes, so test a normal window before concluding the recorder has failed.
