Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart with the recording and transcript, then identify which of three problems occurred: the bot recognized the words incorrectly, decided too soon that the candidate had finished, or kept playing audio already queued after an interruption. Those failures can sound alike, but they require different fixes. Check recognition, end-of-turn detection, and playback separately, then test changes against representative interview answers.
First identify what went wrong
For the affected turn, compare the saved input audio, if available, with the transcript or trace. Look for whether words were substituted or dropped, whether the transcript is correct but the bot responded before the candidate finished, or whether the candidate interrupted the bot but its audio continued.
- Wrong or missing words: Investigate speech recognition and the conditions of the input audio.
- Correct transcript, premature response: Investigate end-of-turn detection, silence timeouts, or fallback behavior.
- Bot audio continues after interruption: Investigate barge-in handling and queued playback.
Microsoft notes that jargon can be difficult for speech-to-text systems and recommends comparing input audio with trace transcripts to find systematic misrecognitions. Its guidance also calls for testing the conditions users encounter, including accents, speaking rates, quiet speech, background noise, and telephone audio: Microsoft Learn’s voice-agent best practices and Voice Live documentation. Do not assume a particular accent, microphone, or noise caused a problem until you have reviewed the recording.
Fix recognition errors without masking turn-taking problems
Check the words the bot received
If the audio contains the answer but the transcript does not, focus on recognition rather than changing the bot’s pause timer. Check whether the answer includes names, acronyms, or role-specific terminology, and whether the speech conditions match what you tested. A transcript that ends abruptly may indicate a cut-off, but confirm that against the recording instead of treating every short transcript as a recognition failure.

Test the conditions candidates actually use
Build a small set of representative clips or scripted answers. Include domain terminology, different speaking rates, quiet speech, pauses, and noisy or telephone-quality audio where those conditions are relevant. Compare the same examples before and after a recognition change; one successful replay is not enough to show that a fix is reliable.
Tune early turn endings and barge-in separately
Correct transcript, bot responds too soon
If the transcript captures the answer but the bot starts speaking while the candidate is still thinking or talking, inspect end-of-turn confidence and timeout behavior. Silence does not always mean a candidate has finished. If the platform permits it, test a longer wait or an explicit completion cue, then judge whether the interview pacing still feels natural.

Some controls are product-specific. Amazon Connect documents separate settings for end-of-turn detection and barge-in, and warns that a timeout-driven re-prompt can be mistaken for a real interruption: AWS’s agentic voice best practices. In that case, tune the end-of-turn behavior rather than changing the barge-in control. Any defaults or allowed ranges in that documentation apply to Amazon Connect, not to voice interview bots generally.
Candidate cannot interrupt a long bot prompt
If the candidate tries to speak over a question or explanation but the bot does not yield, investigate barge-in behavior. Confirm that the feature is enabled and determine whether its settings can be adjusted for the relevant prompt, question, or intent. Do not use a longer silence timeout as a substitute for making the bot interruptible; the controls solve different problems.

Allow time for thinking pauses
Interview answers often include pauses while a candidate recalls an example or organizes a response. If the system treats each pause as an answer’s end, test a more patient end-of-turn setting. A platform may instead support a spoken completion phrase: Alibaba Cloud’s AI Interview documentation describes a mode in which a candidate can say a phrase such as “I’m finished” to signal the end of a turn: Alibaba Cloud AI Interview documentation. This is a vendor-specific option, not a universal voice-bot setting.
Check response length and queued audio
Put useful information early
A bot can technically support interruption and still feel as though it is talking over the candidate if its prompts are unnecessarily long. Microsoft recommends putting useful information early in a response and says a rising barge-in rate is a reason to examine response length before changing detection settings: Microsoft’s voice-agent best practices. Shorten or restructure long prompts, then check whether candidates can respond at the right point without losing necessary instructions.

Stop playback and clear the queue on interruption
In a streaming implementation, stopping audio generation on the server may not stop sound already buffered by the client. AWS’s Amazon Nova client guidance says to respond to an interruption signal by stopping current playback, clearing queued audio chunks, and then playing the new audio: Amazon Nova streaming audio documentation. If the candidate has interrupted but old bot speech continues, inspect the client’s playback queue as well as server-side turn handling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate a change with repeatable interview scenarios
Use the same representative clips or scripted scenarios before and after each change. Change one setting at a time and record the platform, locale, prompt or question, setting, and result. This makes it easier to tell whether a change fixed the failure or merely shifted it.
- Transcript quality: did the transcript match the recorded answer?
- Premature turn endings: did the bot wait through ordinary thinking pauses?
- Interruption behavior: could the candidate stop a long bot turn, and did playback actually stop?
- Time to first audio: did the change add delay before the bot responded?
- Barge-in rate and session outcome: did interruptions increase, and were sessions completed?
Microsoft recommends testing representative audio conditions and comparing audio with trace transcripts; its documentation does not set a universal pass threshold for interview bots. There is likewise no single established acceptable silence duration, recognition-accuracy target, or interruption rate across platforms. Treat vendor settings as platform-specific, and verify current labels, defaults, and feature availability for the product and locale you use.
What to compare when choosing or configuring a platform
Before adopting or rebuilding an interview flow, check whether operators can inspect recordings and transcripts, test relevant terminology and locales, configure end-of-turn and barge-in behavior separately, tolerate thinking pauses, stop queued playback after interruption, and compare representative sessions using transcript quality, response latency, interruption rate, and completion outcomes. Vendor documentation describes capabilities within individual products; it is not an independent head-to-head evaluation of interview platforms.
