If Ubuntu stops after a message such as /dev/sda1: clean, 552599/6111232 files, 7119295/24414464 blocks, the word “clean” is not the cause or a complete diagnosis. It reports a filesystem-check result for one partition; the file and block figures are counts. First check whether the system is still booting or has reached a different failure. If you run a filesystem repair, identify the right partition and check it while it is unmounted.

What the “clean, files, blocks” line means

The line reports the status of a filesystem check on a partition. “Files” and “blocks” are counts, not error codes. A clean result means the check did not report filesystem errors; it does not mean Ubuntu has finished starting or that every later boot component is working.

Boot-time checks can be normal. Ubuntu’s systemd documentation explains that checks are scheduled for filesystems configured for checking in /etc/fstab, and filesystem-specific tools may decide whether a check is needed based on factors such as time since the previous check, mount count, or an unclean unmount. A failed check can lead to emergency mode, but a clean line may simply be the last message displayed before a separate problem. See the Ubuntu Jammy systemd-fsck manual.

Start with what the computer does next

Wait briefly, then note the actual symptom rather than assuming the clean line identifies it. Does the login screen appear eventually? Does the display go blank? Is there an emergency-mode message, or can you log in through a text console? These observations help distinguish a filesystem problem from a later graphics, login, or boot-stage failure.

If the graphical screen is stuck, try Ctrl+Alt+F2 to open a virtual terminal and sign in. The key combination can vary by hardware and configuration. If a terminal opens, note any visible errors and use the boot logs to identify a failed service before changing drivers or system settings.

Choose a recovery route

Route Use it when What it helps establish
GRUB recovery mode You can reach the GRUB menu and see a recovery-mode entry. Provides recovery options, including a filesystem check or root shell. Confirm that a partition is unmounted before running a check.
Ubuntu live USB The installed recovery route is unavailable or cannot provide an offline filesystem. Lets you identify and work on the installed system’s partition from a separate boot environment.
TTY or boot-log investigation The filesystem check is clean, but the graphical boot still does not appear. Helps identify a failure later in startup, such as a display or login service issue.

Try GRUB recovery mode

  1. Restart and open the GRUB menu. If it is hidden, the key or method to reveal it varies by hardware and Ubuntu setup.
  2. Select Advanced options, then choose a recovery-mode entry for the installed Ubuntu kernel.
  3. Use the recovery menu’s filesystem-check option if available, or its root shell to gather information and perform an appropriate offline check.

Do not confuse the recovery menu’s clean option with a filesystem repair: it is intended to free disk space. Use the filesystem-check option for that task.

Beamo Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS 64-bit Bootable USB Flash Drive - Live USB for Installing and Repairing Ubuntu Desktop
  • UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.
  • LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Ubuntu live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
  • PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
  • BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
  • BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.

Boot from Ubuntu live media

If recovery mode is unavailable, boot an Ubuntu live USB. This is an alternative way to access the installed partition without booting the installed system. You will need to identify the correct Linux filesystem before checking it; device names may look like /dev/sdaX or /dev/nvme0n1pX, and guessing risks targeting the wrong volume. A partition tool or blkid can help identify partitions and filesystem types.

Check safely before repairing a filesystem

Choose the checker for the filesystem type. e2fsck is for ext2, ext3, and ext4 filesystems; it is not a universal repair command. Ubuntu’s Jammy manual warns: “Note that in general it is not safe to run e2fsck on mounted file systems.” It also says results are invalid if the filesystem is mounted. If asked whether to check a mounted filesystem, answer no. Read the Ubuntu Jammy e2fsck manual.

  • Popularity:Most popular linux distributions and all come with common software includes office software, web browser, image editing, multimedia, and email except Lubuntu which is desgined to targted for very old PC.
  • Support: Print user guide and support available. please contact us for help if you have an issue.
  • Live USB or install: You can either try on USB or install on hard drive.
  • Identify the partition and filesystem type before choosing a checker.
  • Check mount state. In particular, the installed root filesystem may be mounted when Ubuntu is running normally.
  • Use recovery or live media to run an offline check when needed.
  • Avoid adding -y reflexively: it automatically approves repairs, which is risky when the target or proposed changes are not understood.

If the checker reports corrections, let it finish and follow its prompts or the recovery workflow. Reboot and assess what happens next. Repeating forced checks after a clean result is not a fix for a failure in a later boot stage.

If the filesystem is clean but Ubuntu still will not boot

Investigate the next failed stage rather than treating the filesystem message as proof of a disk problem. Possible causes reported in community troubleshooting include a graphics or display-manager issue, low disk space, missing mount or device entries, and storage trouble. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; community reports do not establish that any one applies to your computer.

  • If a TTY or recovery shell works, look for a specific failed service or boot error in the logs.
  • Consider whether the problem began after a graphics-driver change, system update, or other configuration change.
  • Check available disk space if you can access a shell.
  • If errors recur during offline checks or there are other hardware-specific symptoms, preserve important data and pursue storage diagnostics.

Before making a driver change or replacing hardware, collect the Ubuntu version, hardware details, exact last messages, and relevant boot-log errors. The clean status line alone is not evidence that an SSD or hard disk needs replacement.

Changes to avoid as a first response

Do not skip filesystem checks or edit /etc/fstab just to get past the message. Those actions can suppress a relevant boot check without fixing the underlying issue. Ubuntu’s systemd-fsck documentation describes how filesystem checks relate to /etc/fstab and notes that a failed check can send the system to emergency mode.
