TV audio delay is usually fixable without replacing your soundbar. First determine whether the mismatch comes from one channel or app, the TV’s processing, the connection, or wireless transmission. Then use the TV’s Audio Delay, A/V Sync, or Match Screen and Sound control while watching a speaking face. For HDMI systems, use the ARC or eARC ports on both devices, verify the cable, and select the appropriate passthrough mode. If both TV speakers and external speakers are playing, disable one output or try PCM. Bluetooth often adds unavoidable latency, so wired HDMI or optical is the better choice for timing-sensitive gaming.
Why is my TV sound delayed with external speakers?
A lip-sync error occurs when the picture and sound do not reach you at the same time. The TV may process video more slowly than audio, an app or broadcaster may transmit an already-misaligned signal, or an external speaker may add processing or wireless transmission time. Different devices can also process the same digital signal at different speeds.
The most useful first test is to play the same type of content through another app or channel. If only one channel or app is late, the source is probably responsible. If every source is late through the external speaker but the TV’s own speakers are on time, concentrate on the connection and speaker settings. If both outputs are late, inspect the TV’s audio settings and software.
Manufacturers describe the causes in similar terms. Samsung notes that the broadcasting signal itself can create delay in some or all programs. LG attributes echo or lip-sync errors to different digital-processing speeds in the TV and soundbar. Sony warns that Bluetooth properties can place the sound behind the picture.

How can I tell whether the source or my speaker setup is at fault?
Separate a source problem from a system problem before changing settings. Otherwise, you may compensate for one faulty app and make every other source worse.
Test another channel or app
- Start a program with a clear, continuously talking face.
- Switch to another channel, or play similar content in a different streaming app.
- Compare the movement of the lips with the consonants you hear, especially words beginning with p, b, or t.
- Test the TV speakers alone, then the external speaker alone if your TV allows both choices.
LG identifies a problem limited to one channel as a likely broadcast-signal issue. TCL recommends changing streaming apps or channels and, for antenna, cable, or satellite service, checking another channel. When only one app is affected, LG recommends unplugging the TV for one minute and checking that app for an update.
Interpret the result
- One channel or app only: Treat it as a source or stream-timing issue. Report it to the broadcaster or app provider if it persists.
- All sources through the external speaker: Check the cable, ARC/eARC ports, output format, and sync control.
- TV speakers are on time but the external speaker is late: The soundbar, receiver, optical link, HDMI link, or Bluetooth connection is adding latency.
- Both TV and external speaker are heard with an echo: Two outputs are active and processing them at different speeds.
- Every source is late, including the TV speakers: Reset sound settings, install available software updates, and consult the model manual if the controls described below are missing.
How do I fix audio delay over HDMI ARC or eARC?
HDMI ARC and eARC usually provide the best wired route for a soundbar or receiver, but only when the cable is connected to the correct ports and both devices are configured for them.

- Turn off the TV and speaker or receiver.
- At the TV, locate the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input may not return TV audio to the speaker.
- Connect the other end to the speaker’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, not to a standard HDMI input.
- Reseat both plugs firmly. If the cable is damaged, intermittent, or too old for the required eARC features, replace it with a certified high-speed HDMI cable that supports the capabilities your equipment needs.
- Power the TV and speaker back on and select HDMI ARC/eARC as the speaker input.
ARC and eARC are not interchangeable on every feature. ARC has less bandwidth and may restrict some high-resolution formats; eARC supports more formats when both devices and the cable support them. For basic stereo or compressed surround, either may be sufficient, but the correct labeled ports are still required.
Use passthrough on a TCL Roku TV
On a TCL Roku TV, open Settings > Audio > S/PDIF and ARC/eARC and select Auto passthrough. Then power-cycle the TV and the speaker. This setting lets the connected device receive the audio format rather than forcing an unnecessary conversion that can affect timing.
Check the TV’s digital-output mode
If passthrough or an automatic mode still produces a mismatch, try PCM as a diagnostic. PCM can remove a processing mismatch between the TV and speaker, although it may change how multichannel formats are delivered. Record the original setting so you can restore it if surround playback is more important than the timing improvement.

Where are the TV audio-sync controls?
Manufacturers use different names for the same basic function. Make a small adjustment, watch a talking face, and repeat. Do not jump to the maximum value: a setting that fixes one source can make another source early.
Samsung: Digital Output Audio Delay
- Press Home.
- Open Settings > Sound > Expert Settings.
- Select Digital Output Audio Delay.
- Increase or decrease the value while watching speech. Samsung lists this control for HDMI-eARC or SPDIF connections.
Use the smallest correction that aligns speech. If the control has no effect, verify that the external device is actually using the HDMI-eARC or SPDIF path selected in the menu.
LG webOS 6 or later: Match Screen and Sound
- Open Settings > All Settings > Sound > Advanced Settings.
- Select Match Screen and Sound.
- Turn on Bypass first and test the result.
- If the mismatch remains, turn Bypass off and adjust TV Speaker Delay gradually.
LG menu labels and availability vary by model and software version. A control shown in an online guide may not appear on an older webOS release or on a model with different audio hardware.
Sony: A/V sync
- Open Settings > Display & Sound > Audio output.
- Select A/V sync.
- Adjust the value while watching a person speak.
Sony notes that optical systems may require A/V Sync or Audio Delay. Some Sony controls provide an adjustment range of approximately 0 to 250 milliseconds. That is a device-setting range, not a universal delay value and not a measurement of how common the problem is.
Soundbar or receiver controls
Many soundbars and AV receivers have their own lip-sync or audio-delay setting. If both the TV and speaker offer a control, change only one at a time and write down the starting value. Two independent corrections can add together and make the sound early instead of late.

- Open the TV’s sound-output or speaker-selection menu.
- Choose the external speaker only, or choose the TV speakers only for a diagnostic test.
- Listen again to a talking face. If the echo disappears when one output is muted, the hardware is not necessarily defective.
- If you need both outputs for a specific accessibility setup, try PCM for Digital Sound Output and use the smallest available delay on the faster path.
LG specifically recommends using one output or changing Digital Sound Output to PCM when different processing speeds create an echo. Exact menu names vary, so use the model manual if the setting is not obvious.
Why is Bluetooth TV audio behind the picture?
Bluetooth adds a wireless encoding, transmission, and decoding path. Sony states that the properties of Bluetooth can create a delay between picture and sound. The delay can be tolerable for films but distracting in games, where button presses must produce immediate sound.
Best option for gaming
Use a wired HDMI ARC/eARC or digital-optical connection for latency-sensitive gaming whenever the TV and speaker support it. A wired link removes Bluetooth’s radio transmission step and generally gives the TV more predictable timing.
If Bluetooth is the only practical connection
- Open the TV’s A/V Sync, Audio Delay, or equivalent control, if available.
- Adjust while watching speech, then test an actual game.
- Check responsiveness as well as lip sync. Increasing synchronization can make the sound line up with the picture while adding perceived delay to game audio.
- If the result changes between apps or games, use the setting only for the source that needs it and consider a wired connection for the others.
Bluetooth behavior depends on the TV, speaker, codec, and software. A sync control can compensate for a fixed delay, but it cannot guarantee identical timing across every Bluetooth device or application.
Which connection is best for TV sound timing?
The right connection depends on whether you value low latency, surround-format support, easy adjustment, or compatibility with existing ports.
| Connection | Where sync is adjusted | Format and compatibility considerations | Gaming suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | TV, soundbar, or receiver when supported | Use the ARC-labeled ports on both devices. Bandwidth and format support are lower than eARC on some systems. | Usually preferable to Bluetooth when configured correctly. |
| HDMI eARC | TV, soundbar, or receiver; model-dependent | Higher bandwidth and broader format support when both devices and the cable support eARC. | Strong wired choice for low, predictable latency. |
| Optical digital (TOSLINK) | TV or speaker; some systems expose A/V Sync or Audio Delay | Confirm both ends are seated and select optical/digital output on both devices. Format support is more limited than eARC. | Good wired alternative when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable. |
| Bluetooth | Usually the TV’s A/V Sync control; availability varies | Wireless latency depends on the TV, speaker, codec, and software. | Least suitable for timing-sensitive gaming unless testing confirms acceptable response. |
Do not change connection type until you have checked the ports and output mode. A correctly configured ARC/eARC connection can outperform an incorrectly configured optical link, and a working optical connection is generally more predictable than Bluetooth.

How do I check an optical connection?
Optical is a useful fallback when the TV or speaker lacks compatible ARC/eARC hardware.
- Remove any protective caps from the TOSLINK plugs if present.
- Push the cable fully into the TV’s optical output and the speaker’s optical input. The connector should sit firmly; do not force it at an angle.
- Set the speaker input to Optical or Digital In.
- On the TV, select optical or digital audio output rather than HDMI or TV speaker output.
- Use the TV’s A/V Sync or Audio Delay control if speech is still late.
Optical carries audio only, so volume and power behavior may differ from HDMI-CEC control. That difference does not itself indicate a lip-sync fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if every channel and app is delayed?
A universal problem points away from one broadcaster and toward the TV, connection, speaker, or a system-wide setting.
Reset sound settings
Samsung recommends Reset Sound when audio behavior remains wrong after basic checks. Use the reset option in the TV’s sound menu, then reselect the intended output and test before applying a new delay value.
Install TV and app updates
- Open the TV’s support or system-update menu.
- Install any available TV software update.
- For an app-specific problem, check that app’s update status.
- Restart the TV after updating and retest the same program.
LG’s one-minute unplug procedure is useful when only one app is affected: disconnect TV power for one minute, reconnect it, and test the app again. Updates and menu names differ by model and region.

Power-cycle the entire chain
- Turn off the TV, soundbar or receiver, and any connected source device.
- Unplug the TV and speaker for about one minute.
- Reconnect the speaker and TV, then power them on in their normal order.
- Confirm the selected input and ARC/eARC or optical output before retesting.
A power cycle clears temporary handshakes and can restore ARC/eARC audio negotiation without changing your saved picture settings.

What common fixes make lip sync worse?
- Adjusting delay before identifying the source: A channel-specific fault can lead you to apply a correction that harms every other channel.
- Using a normal HDMI port: The cable may be fine, but TV audio will not return to the speaker unless the TV and speaker use their ARC/eARC-labeled ports.
- Leaving both outputs enabled: The resulting echo is a timing difference between two paths, not necessarily a bad soundbar.
- Changing several controls at once: You cannot tell which setting helped, and two positive delays may overcorrect the signal.
- Assuming Bluetooth can be made instantaneous: A/V Sync can compensate for a measured delay, but wireless latency remains device- and software-dependent.
- Using the largest delay value: Controls such as Sony’s approximately 0–250 ms range are adjustment limits, not recommended targets.
- Ignoring software version differences: Samsung, LG, Sony, and TCL menus vary by model and software release. Missing labels may mean the feature is unavailable on that model.
When should I replace a cable or escalate to support?
Replace a cable after confirming the ports and settings when the connection drops, audio cuts out, ARC/eARC repeatedly disconnects, or the cable is visibly damaged. A new high-speed HDMI cable is the logical replacement for a faulty ARC/eARC link; a digital optical cable is the wired alternative when both devices have optical ports.
Contact the TV or speaker manufacturer after you have tested another source, verified the correct ports, selected the intended output, tried the available sync control, power-cycled the devices, and installed updates. Provide the exact TV and speaker model numbers, connection type, software versions, and whether the delay affects every source or only one app. That information helps support distinguish a broadcast problem from a hardware or firmware fault.
How do I prevent audio delay after fixing it?
- Keep the TV and soundbar on their ARC/eARC or optical inputs rather than switching between similarly named HDMI sockets.
- Record the final Audio Delay or A/V Sync value so you can restore it after a reset.
- Use one audio output unless you have a specific reason to run two.
- Retest a live channel, a streaming app, and a game after major TV or soundbar updates.
- For gaming, prefer a wired HDMI or optical path and verify controller-to-sound responsiveness, not just film dialogue.
- If only one app repeatedly drifts, report the program or stream to that provider instead of continually changing the TV-wide delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is live TV out of sync while streaming apps are fine?
A broadcaster or live-feed encoder can introduce timing errors that are not present in an on-demand app. Compare several channels before changing the TV-wide delay; a problem confined to one service should be reported to that broadcaster or app provider.
Does a longer HDMI cable cause lip-sync delay?
Cable length by itself does not normally create a fixed audio offset, but a marginal or damaged cable can cause handshakes, dropouts, or format changes. Reseat the cable and replace it with a suitable high-speed HDMI cable if ARC or eARC repeatedly disconnects.
Should I choose PCM or passthrough for surround sound?
Passthrough lets the receiver or soundbar decode the incoming format and can preserve supported surround formats. PCM is a useful diagnostic when different processing paths create a mismatch, but it may change the multichannel format your system receives.
Why does my soundbar sync correctly on films but not in games?
Games react to controller input, so even a small Bluetooth or processing delay is easier to notice than in prerecorded dialogue. Test the same connection in a game and use wired HDMI ARC/eARC or optical when immediate response matters.
What information will support ask for if the delay remains?
Have the TV and speaker model numbers, software versions, connection type, selected audio-output mode, and a description of which channels or apps are affected. Note whether the TV speakers alone are synchronized; that immediately narrows the likely fault to the external audio path.
