Identify your game version before troubleshooting
Open the game’s version information and compare it with the version shown by your game store. The current PC advice below distinguishes the older 4.04 build from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. Requirements, support status, and the relevance of particular fixes depend on which build is installed.
Remastered was released on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for owners on specified platforms. CD PROJEKT RED says existing saves remain compatible, but the changed skill system resets skills. Fix crashes in the developer’s recommended order
CD PROJEKT RED’s crash guidance starts with system requirements and works through software conflicts and installation problems before graphics drivers. Try one step at a time and launch the game after each change so you can identify what helped.

- Check the requirements for your build and settings. Compare your PC with the requirements for the installed edition and the graphics tier you intend to use. Remastered’s requirements have separate Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing tiers; meeting one tier does not mean the PC meets another. - Close nonessential programs. Temporarily close background applications that could conflict with the game. CD PROJEKT RED also suggests temporarily disabling antivirus or antimalware software for diagnosis. Re-enable protection after the test.
- Check for malware. Run your usual security scan if you suspect an infection; malware can interfere with game stability.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-check or repair option in the store or launcher where you installed the game. The exact label varies by platform.
- Investigate the graphics driver. If the crash continues, CD PROJEKT RED says a clean driver reinstall may help. Its suggested sequence is to download a driver first, remove previous driver versions with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), then install the downloaded driver cleanly. The newest driver is not always the answer: the developer notes that installing an older driver can sometimes help with crashing.
For a DirectX 11 HairWorks crash while loading a save
If you are on an older build and the crash occurs when loading a save with HairWorks enabled in DirectX 11, check that the applicable PC hotfix is installed. CD PROJEKT RED’s June 6, 2024 hotfix addressed that specific crash; it is separate from the more recent Remastered HairWorks performance issue. See the official hotfix notice.
Reduce stuttering and low FPS on Remastered
Install the latest applicable update
Check your launcher for updates before changing settings. On October 1, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED released Hotfix 5.00c, which reverted a change that had caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users. The impact is therefore build- and user-dependent; advice about the earlier behavior should not be treated as a guaranteed description of an updated installation. Use HairWorks as a diagnostic toggle
For Remastered performance trouble, test the game with NVIDIA HairWorks disabled and compare the same scene at the same resolution and settings. CD PROJEKT RED’s HairWorks support notice warns that enabling it may significantly affect performance and recommends disabling it until a future patch. Match resolution and preset to your hardware
Higher output resolution significantly affects FPS, and performance can vary by scene, gameplay, PC configuration, and settings. Use the official requirements for the tier you want rather than treating a single minimum or recommended specification as a target for every configuration.

The performance targets on the requirements page are based on CD PROJEKT RED QA testing, not a promise for every PC or scene. The stated RT and Path Tracing expectations use automatic upscaling; Path Tracing figures also use Frame Generation. Other configurations are listed at native resolution. Compare only against the tier and conditions that match your setup.
Check the storage drive
CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required for Remastered’s latest technical enhancements and can improve loading and asset streaming. If the game is installed on a hard drive, moving it to an SSD may address storage-related loading or streaming issues. An SSD is not a guaranteed fix for crashes or every cause of stuttering.

Account for the Windows 10 support change
CD PROJEKT RED no longer officially supports or tests Windows 10 for continued development, citing the end of Microsoft and NVIDIA support for that operating system. The game may still run, but the developer cannot guarantee future compatibility or performance on Windows 10. This is a support caveat, not proof that Windows 10 caused a particular crash.

- Record the installed game version, operating system, graphics driver version, resolution, graphics preset, and whether HairWorks is enabled.
- Note what happens immediately before the failure: launching, loading a save, entering a particular scene, or changing settings. This helps distinguish a general crash from a specific issue such as the historical DirectX 11 HairWorks save-load crash.
- After each change, repeat the same action or compare FPS in the same scene. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
- If a problem began after a particular update, check that build’s official patch notes and support notices before rolling back. Reverting to an earlier version depends on platform, and an older graphics driver can sometimes help, so neither a rollback nor the newest driver is universally appropriate.
These steps follow the developer’s published guidance and do not guarantee a fix for every PC. CD PROJEKT RED has not published a current per-GPU best-settings matrix in the cited requirements information, so select settings against your own hardware and the official graphics tier rather than relying on a universal card-specific preset.
