“The cursor” in Word can mean the blinking insertion point where text will be entered, the mouse pointer you move around the screen, or the typing mode that causes new text to replace existing text. The right fix depends on which problem you are seeing. Use the symptom table to find the matching steps; most instructions below apply to desktop Word for Windows, with Mac shortcuts where relevant.

First, identify the cursor problem

What you see Likely cause Start here
New letters replace text already in the document Overtype mode is enabled Disable both overtype settings in Word
The blinking line is visible but too thin Windows text-cursor accessibility setting Increase text cursor thickness in Windows Settings
You cannot find the arrow or I-beam pointer Mouse-pointer size, color, or contrast Change the mouse pointer settings
The insertion point seems to be in the wrong place Word is positioned elsewhere in the document, or focus is in an object Use navigation shortcuts or press Esc
Word selects a shape, picture, or text box instead of ordinary text An object has focus Use the Selection Pane or click back into document text

Fix text being replaced as you type

If typing replaces characters to the right of the insertion point, Word is using Overtype mode. This is separate from a cursor that is difficult to see. It is often enabled accidentally by pressing the Insert key.

On Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, or Word 2016 for Windows:

  1. Open the document in Word.
  2. Select File > Options.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Under Editing options, clear Use the Insert key to control overtype.
  5. Clear Use overtype mode.
  6. Select OK, if shown.

Clear both boxes. Clearing only Use overtype mode stops Word from remaining in overtype mode, but leaving Use the Insert key to control overtype enabled allows the Insert key to turn it on again.

Microsoft’s reference for this issue is Text disappears as I type and its related type-over-text instructions.

Make the blinking insertion point easier to see

The insertion point is the vertical blinking line that marks where typed text will appear. Its thickness is controlled by Windows, not by a Word document-formatting command.

Windows 11

  1. Select Start > Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Select Text cursor.
  3. Under Text cursor thickness, move the slider to the right.
  4. For a more visible marker, turn on Text cursor indicator.
  5. Adjust the indicator Size.
  6. Choose a recommended color or select Choose another color.

Windows 10

  1. Select Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Text cursor.
  2. Adjust Change text cursor thickness.
  3. Turn on Turn on text cursor indicator if you want a colored marker.
  4. Adjust Change text cursor indicator size.
  5. Select a suggested color or choose Pick a custom color.

If you see instructions telling you to change cursor thickness under Word > Options > Advanced, they are referring to an outdated or different setting. Microsoft’s current control for text-cursor thickness is in Windows Settings.

Make the mouse pointer easier to see

If the problem is the arrow or I-beam that follows the mouse, change the mouse-pointer size and color rather than the text-cursor settings.

Change the pointer in Windows 11

  1. Select Start > Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Select Mouse pointer and touch.
  3. Move the Size slider to increase the pointer.
  4. Under Mouse pointer style, choose white, black, inverted, or a recommended bright color.
  5. Select Choose another color if you want a custom pointer color.

Add pointer trails

Pointer trails can help you locate a pointer that disappears against a document or application background.

  1. Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
  2. Select Additional mouse settings.
  3. Open the Pointer Options tab.
  4. Select Display pointer trails.
  5. Select OK.

Move the insertion point when it appears stuck

Sometimes the cursor is working but Word is positioned at an unexpected location. These shortcuts move the insertion point without needing to scroll and click precisely:

Action Windows Mac
Beginning of document Ctrl+Home Command+Home or Command+Fn+Left Arrow
End of document Ctrl+End Command+End or Command+Fn+Right Arrow
Top of previous page Ctrl+Page Up Command+Page Up or Command+Fn+Up Arrow
Top of next page Ctrl+Page Down Command+Page Down or Command+Fn+Down Arrow
Previous insertion point or last change Shift+F5 Shift+F5

Shift+F5 is especially useful after jumping to another part of a document. It returns the cursor to the previous insertion point or the last place you made a change.

Return from a shape, picture, or text box to normal text

Word can place focus on an object instead of the document’s ordinary text. This happens with shapes, pictures, diagrams, and text boxes, particularly when objects overlap or sit behind text.

  1. Click in a normal paragraph outside the object.
  2. If you are editing text inside a text box, press Esc to leave the text box.
  3. If an object is hidden, stacked, or behind another object, select Home > Select > Selection Pane.
  4. Use the Selection Pane to identify and select the object you need to move, edit, or remove.

There is an important distinction when working with text boxes: while the pointer is inside the text box, commands such as Ctrl+C and Delete act on the text inside it. To select or delete the text-box object itself, click its border first.

Use Word’s command search when a menu is difficult to find

Microsoft 365 versions may label Word’s command-search field Search or Tell Me. On Windows, press Alt+Q, type a command such as Selection Pane or Options, use the Down Arrow to select a result, and press Enter.

The exact search results and available actions vary between Word releases. If a command is not offered by search, use the menu path shown in this guide.

Mac-specific limitations and shortcut conflicts

On a Mac, the document-navigation shortcuts use Command rather than Ctrl, as shown in the table above. A macOS system shortcut or third-party utility can override a Word shortcut.

Microsoft documents checking conflicting shortcuts under Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Mission Control, then clearing the shortcut that conflicts. Newer macOS versions call this area System Settings rather than System Preferences, so the label depends on your macOS version.

Some Word settings are also unavailable or more limited in Word for the web. If a desktop-only option is missing, open the file in the installed Word application rather than Word in a browser.

When editing is disabled on a Mac

If the pointer moves normally but Word will not let you type, save, or create a document, the issue may not be the cursor. Microsoft’s Word for Mac known-issues page says that, beginning July 13, 2026, some macOS users—including certain Microsoft 365, Office 2021, and Office 2019 users—may encounter reduced functionality mode. In that mode, Office can open and print files but cannot edit, save, or create new files.

Check Word’s account or licensing status and the relevant Microsoft Word for Mac known-issues page before changing cursor settings. A licensing or reduced-functionality problem can look like a failed insertion point even though the mouse and cursor are working normally.

FAQ

Why does Word delete the next letter when I type?

Overtype mode is enabled. Go to File > Options > Advanced, clear both Use the Insert key to control overtype and Use overtype mode under Editing options, then select OK.

Does pressing Insert fix a missing cursor in Word?

Not necessarily. If Word allows the Insert key to control overtype, pressing Insert toggles that mode. Disable both overtype settings instead of relying on the key as a general cursor fix.

Can I make the blinking cursor thicker in Word?

Use Windows settings. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor and adjust Text cursor thickness. Windows 10 uses Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Text cursor.

How do I make the mouse pointer larger in Word?

In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch, then adjust Size and choose a contrasting pointer style or color.

How do I get back to where I was typing?

Press Shift+F5 to move to the previous insertion point or last change. Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End move to the beginning and end of a Word document on Windows.

Why is Word selecting a shape instead of placing the text cursor?

An object has focus. Click in an ordinary paragraph, or press Esc after editing a text box. For hidden or overlapping objects, use Home > Select > Selection Pane.

The Bottom Line

Start by distinguishing the blinking insertion point, the mouse pointer, and overtype mode. If text is being replaced, disable both overtype options in Word. If the line is merely hard to see, change the text-cursor thickness in Windows; if the arrow or I-beam is hard to find, change the mouse-pointer size, color, or trails. For a misplaced cursor, use Word’s navigation shortcuts or press Esc to leave an object or text box.
