If stuttering, trails, or softness started after you enabled upscaling, turn that setting off and compare the same scene again. If the symptom disappears, re-enable only one scaling option at a time; if motion still stutters, check frame pacing and SteamOS updates, and if the problem appears only on a TV or monitor, troubleshoot that display path separately.

This guide uses a controlled process rather than assuming every artifact has the same cause. Upscaling can be a game-level reconstruction feature, while SteamOS may also scale or compose the final image. A long frame, a Beta-channel software issue, or television processing can look similar during play. Isolating those variables prevents you from changing several settings at once or buying hardware you may not need.

What should I check first when upscaling makes the image look or feel worse?

First identify where the symptom appears and whether it began with a particular setting. This separates a game’s image reconstruction from SteamOS scaling, uneven frame delivery, and processing by an external display. The checks below are diagnostic comparisons, not a guarantee that one particular upscaler or mode will fix every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Note the game and the exact symptom: uneven motion or pauses, trails behind moving objects, or a soft image.
  2. Check whether it happens on the Deck’s built-in screen, an external display, or both.
  3. Record the game’s upscaler and quality mode, SteamOS scaling setting, render resolution, and SteamOS version and update channel.
  4. Return to the previous resolution and upscaler setting, then replay the same scene. Change one setting at a time when testing again.

A repeatable scene makes the comparison more useful: rapid movement can reveal trails, while a stationary fine-detail scene can make softness easier to judge. Keep other settings unchanged so you can tell which adjustment coincides with a change.

Make a short troubleshooting record

Before experimenting, write down the title, display used, resolution, upscaler name, quality preset, SteamOS version, and whether the Deck is on the stable, Beta, or Preview channel. Note whether the issue began immediately after enabling the option. This record is useful if you later need the game developer’s support team, and it prevents a setting change from being forgotten between tests.

Use the same save point, benchmark area, or repeatable camera movement for every comparison. Do not judge one run in a busy combat scene and another in a quiet hallway. If possible, make one pass with the upscaler disabled, one with the original setting restored, and one with a single new mode enabled. A visible difference that survives those repeated tests is more meaningful than a one-off impression.

How do I tell whether the problem is the game’s upscaler or SteamOS scaling?

Test the game’s scaling controls separately from SteamOS scaling instead of changing both together. Games do not all offer the same options, and the effect of a mode depends on the title and its implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the game’s own upscaler

Turn off the game-level upscaler and compare the same scene at the prior render resolution. If the softness or trails disappear while motion remains smooth, that points toward the image reconstruction at that game setting. If the stutter disappears, treat performance and frame pacing as the next things to investigate. Those are useful clues from a controlled comparison, not proof of a universal cause.

If the game offers other upscaler quality modes, test them individually. A mode may trade sharpness for performance, and there is no single best setting established for all titles. For example, Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance describes FSR 2.2 under the game’s Video settings as a balance between performance and sharpness, with some performance cost. That example applies to that game; it does not establish how another game’s modes behave.

Compare the same moving object and the same fine text or foliage after each change. A mode that looks sharper while standing still may produce more visible reconstruction trails during a pan, while a softer mode may deliver steadier motion in a demanding scene. The purpose is to identify your title’s trade-off, not to label one mode universally good or bad.

Test SteamOS scaling separately

If SteamOS scaling is active, compare with it disabled while leaving the game’s settings alone. If that changes the result, you have narrowed the issue to the system scaling/composition path rather than the game’s upscaler alone. Avoid stacking or toggling multiple scaling choices during a single test: you will not know which change mattered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing SteamOS scaling, restart the game before judging the result if the title does not immediately redraw its output. Keep the game resolution, quality mode, and display refresh setting constant. Then reverse the change to confirm that the symptom follows the scaling setting instead of merely disappearing after a restart.

Understand what the comparison can and cannot prove

Removing an upscaler and seeing a clean image does not prove that the Deck, panel, or cable is defective. It only shows that the selected reconstruction path is involved in the observed result. Likewise, changing SteamOS scaling and seeing a difference does not prove every game will behave the same way. Record the title and exact mode because another game may expose different controls or use a different rendering path.

How do I diagnose stuttering when average FPS looks steady?

Use the Steam in-game performance monitor while reproducing the stutter, and inspect frame-rate and minimum/frame behavior rather than relying only on the average. Valve explains that one unusually long frame can be visible as stutter or felt as input latency even when the game frequently runs at a high, steady-looking frame rate.

Valve summarizes the problem this way: “What happens, is that even if your game frequently runs at a solid 70 FPS, one single long frame that takes much more time than others can cause a visible stutter or input latency that you notice.” The important point is frame delivery over time. A high average can coexist with a hitch that you clearly see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the in-game performance monitor and reproduce the same section of gameplay.
  2. Watch for a poor minimum or an uneven frame pattern around the moment the pause or hitch occurs.
  3. If frame delivery appears uneven, lower demanding in-game graphics settings and repeat the scene.
  4. Compare again with the upscaler disabled, keeping the scene and other settings consistent.

Lower one demanding setting at a time when possible. This can show whether the hitch is tied to a particular workload rather than to image reconstruction itself. Keep notes on the setting and result; otherwise it is easy to mistake a smoother run for a fix when the scene simply placed less demand on the system.

Do not assume that upscaling always raises performance. Its cost and benefit depend on the game and chosen mode; the Baldur’s Gate 3 FSR 2.2 example, for instance, notes a performance cost alongside its image-quality trade-off. If a mode adds composition work or other processing, a lower internal resolution does not automatically mean the entire frame will arrive sooner.

Separate a hitch from display persistence

A pause in camera movement, delayed input, or an uneven sequence of frames points you toward frame pacing. A trail that moves continuously with an object, without a corresponding pause or input delay, is better tested as an image-quality or display-processing symptom. These categories can overlap, so use the monitor and the same motion scene rather than relying only on how the artifact feels.

Could a SteamOS update fix an upscaling performance problem?

Install available SteamOS updates and restart before pursuing more disruptive fixes. If you use Beta or Preview software, check the installed version and channel: Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta notes, dated August 7, 2026, reported degraded performance in some cases when composition was required, including cases with FSR enabled. Those same notes said the issue was fixed in stable SteamOS 3.8.16.

Valve’s wording is specific: “There is a known issue with degraded performance in some cases when composition is required (such as when having FSR enabled).” Treat that as a version-and-condition clue, not a universal explanation for every FSR hitch. Check the version shown on your Deck and whether it is using stable, Beta, or Preview software. Do not assume that moving to a different channel will resolve your particular symptom; the useful first step is knowing which software you are actually running.

This is a version-specific report, not evidence that every stutter after enabling FSR has the same cause. Check what is actually installed rather than assuming that changing channels will resolve your particular symptom. Valve’s general Steam Deck software troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for system updates and restarting when addressing system instability.

If the issue remains, temporarily exit or disable third-party apps installed in Desktop Mode and retest. Valve includes that as an early troubleshooting measure for instability; it is a reversible way to check whether another running app is involved. Close or disable one category of software at a time, restart if needed, and then repeat the same game scene.

Why restart after updating or changing scaling?

A restart gives the updated system and composition path a clean session and removes uncertainty about whether an old process is still running. It is not a special ghosting cure, but it is a low-risk step Valve includes in its general troubleshooting process. If the symptom returns immediately in the same scene after a clean restart, continue with the controlled comparisons instead of repeating restarts indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the issue happens only on a TV or monitor?

Use the external-display branch only when the symptom is limited to an external screen. TV processing, display mode, connection settings, or dock behavior can affect what you see, so a cable swap is not a general remedy for artifacts on the built-in screen.

  • Turn on the display’s Gaming Mode if available.
  • Turn off motion smoothing and other picture-processing features that may add latency or cause display issues.
  • Verify the selected input, resolution, and refresh rate.
  • If the problem persists, reseat the connection or test a known-good cable and another input. Check dock firmware and the display’s supported modes and limits.

Valve’s external-display guidance says, “If you’re connecting to an external display and it has a ‘Gaming Mode’ option available, we recommend turning that on when connected to your Steam Deck.” Motion smoothing and similar processing can create a moving trail or make an otherwise smooth game feel delayed, so disable those features while testing.

Valve’s external-display documentation also notes that cable capability can depend on the selected mode and data rate. Verify the input, resolution, and refresh rate before concluding that the cable or dock is at fault. Reseat the cable, try another known-good cable or input, and check the dock’s firmware if the symptom remains external-only. Establish that the trouble is in the external connection path before considering a replacement cable or dock.

Use the built-in display as a control

When practical, run the same scene on the Deck’s own screen and the external display without changing the game settings. A symptom that appears only on the TV or monitor sends you down the display-processing and connection branch. A symptom visible on both screens is less likely to be caused solely by the television’s motion processing, although the two displays can still present the same rendered artifact differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy a new dock, cable, screen, or Deck merely because an upscaled image looks wrong on one display. Valve’s guidance supports those connection checks when an external display is involved; it does not identify new hardware as a general fix for artifacts that began after a software setting change.

Does the Deck’s refresh-rate limit matter here?

Only investigate refresh rate if you are changing that setting; it is not a general explanation for ghosting or blur. Valve lists a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz for the LCD Steam Deck and 90 Hz for the OLED model. Selecting an app refresh rate above the model’s limit does not improve performance.

For a refresh-rate test, record whether the Deck is an LCD or OLED model, select a supported value, and keep that value fixed while comparing upscaler modes. Do not interpret an unavailable or capped rate as proof that the upscaler caused the artifact. Refresh-rate limits matter when configuring an app or external display, but the first diagnostic for a new trail or soft image remains the controlled scaling comparison.

What if the problem is limited to one game?

If other games behave normally and the issue remains in one title after the scaling, performance, and update checks, look at that game’s Steam Deck compatibility information and contact its developer’s support. Valve’s software troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Deck Verified status and game updates for performance problems, and points to developer support for app-specific issues.

Compatibility status is one diagnostic input, not a substitute for testing the exact scene and settings that trigger the symptom. Keep the game name, upscaler mode, render resolution, Deck display used, and SteamOS version available when describing the problem to the developer.

Also note whether the game offers its own upscaler, whether SteamOS scaling was enabled, and whether the issue is stutter, trails, softness, or a combination. Include what happened when you disabled the suspected option and whether the Steam performance monitor showed an uneven minimum or frame pattern. That information is more actionable than simply reporting that the game “looks blurry.”

Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid

  • Changing several variables at once: Switching resolution, upscaler, SteamOS scaling, and refresh rate together prevents you from identifying the trigger. Change one control, replay the same scene, and write down the result.
  • Judging only by average FPS: A single long frame can cause a visible hitch despite a high average. Watch minimum or frame behavior with the performance monitor.
  • Assuming upscaling is always faster: The selected method can have a performance cost, as the Baldur’s Gate 3 FSR 2.2 guidance illustrates.
  • Applying TV fixes to the built-in screen: Gaming Mode, motion smoothing, cables, and dock checks are relevant when the symptom is external-only.
  • Treating one game’s menu as universal: Every title may expose different methods, quality labels, or render-resolution controls.
  • Changing software channels without checking the version: Valve’s composition issue was tied to particular SteamOS notes. Record the installed version and channel before drawing a conclusion.
  • Factory-resetting too early: A reset removes data and settings but is not identified by Valve as a first-line remedy for artifacts that began after an upscaling change.

A practical decision path

If you need a concise order of operations, follow this sequence:

  1. Reproduce the symptom in a repeatable scene and identify whether it affects the built-in display, an external display, or both.
  2. Restore the previous game resolution or upscaler setting. If the symptom disappears, re-enable only one game-level mode at a time.
  3. Test SteamOS scaling separately, leaving the game controls unchanged.
  4. Use the Steam performance monitor to look for uneven frame delivery or a poor minimum when the symptom is a hitch.
  5. Lower demanding game settings and retest if frame delivery is uneven; do not assume the upscaler itself is free.
  6. Install updates, restart, and record the SteamOS channel and version. If using Beta or Preview, compare the installed version with Valve’s relevant notes.
  7. Temporarily exit third-party Desktop Mode apps and repeat the test.
  8. If the issue is external-only, enable Gaming Mode, disable motion smoothing, verify modes and inputs, and test the connection path.
  9. If only one game remains affected, check its updates and Deck compatibility information, then contact the developer with your test record.

This sequence keeps reversible software checks ahead of purchases or resets. It also preserves a useful baseline, so you can undo a change when it makes the image or frame delivery worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Steam Deck Verified badge guarantee that a game’s upscaled image will be sharp?

No. Valve’s compatibility guidance does not guarantee a particular upscaler’s appearance. Verified status is worth checking when investigating a game problem, but the specific mode still needs to be judged in that title and scene.

Can I tell whether a graphics setting caused the problem without reinstalling the game?

Yes. A controlled before-and-after comparison of the same scene, with only the suspected setting changed, can help isolate the trigger. A reinstall is not needed for that diagnostic test.

Should I factory-reset my Steam Deck to remove ghosting?

A factory reset is not a supported first-line fix for artifacts that begin after an upscaling change. Start with reversible setting comparisons, updates, a restart, and the relevant external-display checks; Valve’s guidance does not identify a reset as a remedy for this symptom.

Why can stutter happen when the FPS counter looks high?

Averages can hide an isolated long frame. Valve explains that one frame taking much longer than the others can create visible stutter or input latency even when the game frequently runs at a high frame rate. Check minimum or frame behavior with the in-game performance monitor.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I leave FSR enabled because upscaling is supposed to improve performance?

Not automatically. Performance depends on the game and mode. Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 guidance describes FSR 2.2 as a sharpness-and-performance balance and notes a performance cost, so compare the exact mode in your title.

Is SteamOS scaling the same thing as a game’s upscaler?

No. They are separate variables for troubleshooting. Test the game’s own upscaler with SteamOS scaling unchanged, then test SteamOS scaling separately so you know which path changes the image or frame delivery.

Could a Beta SteamOS version be related to FSR stutter?

It can be a relevant version check. Valve’s August 7, 2026 SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta notes reported degraded performance in some cases when composition was required, including FSR-enabled cases, and said the issue was fixed in stable 3.8.16. Check your installed version and channel rather than assuming the same cause.

What should I change first when a TV shows trails but the Deck screen does not?

Use the external-display branch: enable the TV’s Gaming Mode, disable motion smoothing and other processing, verify input, resolution, and refresh rate, then reseat or test another cable/input and check dock firmware. These checks are for external-only symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a cable swap fix ghosting on the built-in Steam Deck display?

No cable is involved in the built-in panel path. A cable or dock test is appropriate only when the symptom is limited to an external display and you are checking that connection.

Does selecting a refresh rate above the Deck’s limit improve upscaling performance?

No. Valve lists a 60 Hz maximum for LCD models and 90 Hz for OLED models. Selecting an app refresh rate above the model’s limit does not improve performance.

What information should I send a game developer?

Include the game name, exact upscaler and quality mode, render resolution, SteamOS scaling state, Deck display used, SteamOS version and channel, the repeatable scene, and whether disabling the upscaler changed blur, trails, or frame pacing. Mention what the performance monitor showed.

Do I need to buy a new dock, screen, or Deck?

Not as a general fix. Start with settings, frame-pacing checks, updates, restart, and the appropriate external-display tests. Consider hardware only after establishing a separate connection or device fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Disable the upscaler, replay the same scene, and change only one scaling control at a time. Use Steam’s performance monitor for hitches, install updates and restart, check Beta or Preview versions against Valve’s notes, and reserve Gaming Mode, cable, dock, and motion-processing checks for symptoms that occur only on an external display. If one game remains affected, document the exact settings and contact its developer.
