Steam Cloud errors are not all the same. Out of Date can mean that Steam has not finished uploading or downloading the game’s cloud data. Unable to Sync is broader: Steam says it may result from a temporary problem or a network problem that prevents local files from synchronizing with Steam Cloud.
Do not launch the game just to test it while the warning is unresolved if your progress matters. Choosing Play can create a conflict between the local and cloud copies and may result in lost progress.
What Steam Cloud is syncing
Steam Cloud is not limited to save games. Depending on the game, it can store save files, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data. The exact files and locations are chosen by the game developer, so two games can behave differently even when both support Steam Cloud.
Steam normally uploads cloud-managed files when the game exits, then restores them when you resume the game on another device. A game played offline, a laptop that was shut down before synchronization completed, or a suspended Steam Deck session can interrupt that sequence.

Before fixing the error: protect the newest save
- Do not click Play on the affected game while Steam is showing an unresolved sync warning.
- If the game is open on another computer or Steam Deck, exit it normally and wait for Steam to finish syncing. A suspended Deck game can remain relevant to a later sync conflict.
- If you know where the game stores its saves, make a backup of that folder before choosing a conflict option. The location is game-dependent; check the game’s documentation or its community support page rather than assuming every title uses the same directory.
- Do not delete local saves, disable synchronization, or accept a replacement copy until you have decided which version contains the progress you want.
1. Check whether the game supports Steam Cloud
Cloud recovery only applies if the game actually uses Steam Cloud for the relevant files. Open the game’s page in the Steam Store and check the feature list for Steam Cloud support. Some games support Steam Cloud for settings but not save files, while many games do not use it at all.
If the game has no Steam Cloud support, an Out of Date or Unable to Sync solution cannot recover a save that was never uploaded. You will need the original computer, a manual save backup, or the game’s own account-sync system.
2. Reconnect Steam and allow synchronization to finish
- Close the game completely. Do not leave it suspended or running in the background.
- Confirm that the computer is online and that Steam is not in Offline Mode. In Steam, open the Steam menu and check whether the option says Go Online. If it does, select it and reconnect.
- Wait for Steam to finish reconnecting. Cloud synchronization can continue in the background after connectivity returns.
- Look at the affected game in your Library and wait for the cloud status to update before launching it.
- If the warning remains, restart Steam normally and check the status again. This is a reasonable way to clear a temporary client or connection issue, but it is not a guarantee that the underlying problem is fixed.
Do not repeatedly start and quit the game while testing. Exiting the game is when Steam normally attempts to upload changed files, and repeated launches can make it harder to identify which copy is newest.
3. Handle a Steam Cloud conflict carefully
A conflict means Steam found different local and cloud files for the game. The local files may have changed on this computer, or the cloud files may have been changed on another computer. Steam cannot safely choose between them because both locations were modified without synchronizing.

When the conflict dialog appears, compare the displayed dates and times with your actual play history. Steam says the most recently modified version is usually the appropriate choice, but the timestamp alone is not enough if the computer clock was wrong, the game was played offline, or the newer file is an unwanted test session.
| What you remember | Usually choose | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| You played the latest session on this computer and exited normally. | The local version | Confirm its timestamp matches that session. |
| You played on another computer and that session synchronized successfully. | The cloud version | Confirm the cloud timestamp is newer than the local copy. |
| You played offline on one device and online on another. | Whichever copy contains the intended progress | Do not assume the cloud copy is newer. |
| You are not sure which session is current. | Stop and make a backup first | Do not choose randomly or launch the game to inspect the result. |
The wording of the buttons can vary by Steam client version. Select the option that clearly keeps the desired local or cloud copy. If the dialog displays file dates, take a screenshot or write them down before confirming.
4. Check the old computer if progress is missing
If you changed computers and the latest progress is absent, the old device may still contain it. Steam notes that this can happen when synchronization failed before Steam was closed, or when an older version was uploaded to the cloud.

- Start the old computer and connect it to the internet.
- Open Steam and let it complete any pending cloud operation.
- Launch the game only after checking the cloud status, then exit it normally if you need Steam to record the latest local files.
- Return to the new computer and resolve any conflict by comparing the timestamps and your play history.
If the old device is unavailable and the save was never uploaded, Steam Support cannot recover that local save. Steam also cannot resolve a cloud-file conflict for you, so preserving local backups before choosing an option is important.

5. Check Steam Cloud settings without deleting anything
Open Steam > Settings > Cloud and confirm that Steam Cloud is enabled. Steam also provides a per-game cloud setting in the game’s Properties window; open the game’s Library page, select the gear icon, choose Properties, and look under General for the Steam Cloud option.
The exact label can vary between Steam client versions. If the global setting is disabled, Steam cannot perform normal cloud synchronization. However, toggling Steam Cloud off and on is not a documented universal repair. Do not use that approach before backing up or identifying the desired local files, because changing synchronization settings can make it less clear which data should be retained.
6. Inspect the Steam Cloud log
Steam records Cloud activity in a file named cloud_log.txt. The log can show whether Steam attempted to read from or write to the Cloud and whether a particular file or endpoint failed.
| Operating system | Log path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamlogscloud_log.txt |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt |
Close or minimize Steam, open the path for your operating system, and search the log around the time of the failed sync. Look for the affected game, upload or download attempts, errors, and connection failures. The log is diagnostic evidence, not a repair tool: it will not safely resolve a conflict by itself.

7. Do not confuse installed-file repairs with Cloud repairs
Steam’s Verify integrity of game files feature checks installed game content. It is useful when executable or asset files are damaged, but Steam’s Cloud documentation does not identify it as a repair for cloud records or cloud-managed saves.
Likewise, commands frequently suggested online, including steam://flushconfig, are not prescribed by the current Steam Cloud FAQ or Steamworks Cloud documentation as a repair procedure for Out of Date or Unable to Sync. Avoid treating an undocumented command as a guaranteed fix, particularly before making a save backup.
Why these errors happen
- Offline play: a game played while Steam is offline cannot upload until the client reconnects. Using the same game elsewhere before that happens can create a conflict.
- Suspended Steam Deck session: a suspended game can prevent the same game from being safely used on another device and may produce a save conflict.
- Temporary or network failure: Unable to Sync does not necessarily identify a save conflict. Steam uses that message for broader synchronization failures as well.
- Game-specific implementation: developers can use Auto-Cloud, which relies on configured file paths and patterns, or the Cloud API, which gives the game more control. This is why cloud behavior, file selection, and limits differ between games.
- Cloud limits or unusual file patterns: Steamworks documentation lists a user cloud quota of 10 GB and 10,000 files, while individual games can impose their own implementation limits or select different files for synchronization.
When Steam cannot recover the data
Steam Cloud is not a general backup service for every file in a game’s save directory. It only handles the files configured by that game, and a game must support Steam Cloud for cloud recovery to apply. If the desired file was never uploaded, Steam cannot recreate it from the Cloud.

FAQ
Does “Unable to Sync” mean my save is lost?
No. Steam describes the message broadly as a temporary or network problem that prevented local files from synchronizing. The newest save may still be on the current computer, another device, or the cloud.
Which Steam Cloud version should I choose?
Compare the local and cloud timestamps with your actual play history. The most recently modified copy is usually the right choice, but do not assume the cloud copy is newer or select randomly.
Can I launch the game while Steam shows a sync warning?
You can, but Steam warns that choosing Play while the warning is unresolved can create a local-versus-cloud conflict and cause lost progress. If the save matters, resolve the warning or make a backup first.

Will verifying game files fix Steam Cloud?
Not necessarily. Verification checks installed game content. Steam’s current Cloud FAQ does not document it as a Cloud synchronization repair step.
What if I played on Steam Deck and then moved to my PC?
Exit the game on the Deck and make sure it is no longer suspended or waiting to synchronize. Steamworks documentation identifies a suspended Deck game as a multi-device conflict case.
Can Steam Support recover a save that was never uploaded?
No. If the old device is unavailable and the save never reached Steam Cloud, Steam Support cannot recover that local file.
The Bottom Line
Protect the local save first, keep the game closed, reconnect Steam, and check whether the title actually supports Steam Cloud. If Steam presents a conflict, compare the local and cloud timestamps with your play history rather than assuming the cloud copy is correct. Check the original device and cloud_log.txt before making destructive changes. Steam Cloud errors can be temporary, network-related, or caused by genuinely different files; there is no single command or universal toggle that safely fixes every case.
