If Spatial Audio head tracking is not working on your iPhone, first confirm that your AirPods model and the audio you are playing support it, then select Head Tracked in Control Center while the AirPods are connected. If the setting works in one app but not another, check it again in the problem app: iPhone saves the Spatial Audio mode separately for each app. Accessibility settings, an incomplete Personalized Spatial Audio profile, or outdated AirPods firmware can also affect what you hear.

This guide separates a missing control from a soundstage that simply behaves unexpectedly. That distinction matters: a compatible headset can work normally in Apple Music yet show no Spatial Audio option for a particular video app or item. Follow the checks in order, testing with supported content after each change.

What does Spatial Audio head tracking do?

Head tracking changes how the spatial soundstage responds when you move your head. With compatible AirPods and supported audio or video, the sound can remain anchored to the iPhone rather than simply moving with your head. This is why turning your head may change the apparent direction of the sound.

Spatial Audio and head tracking are related, but they are not the same setting. Fixed enables Spatial Audio without head tracking; Head Tracked enables tracking; and Off disables both. The option you need for head movement is specifically Head Tracked.

  • EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*

Think of the three choices as a quick diagnostic comparison:

  • Off: Neither the Spatial Audio effect nor head tracking is enabled.
  • Fixed: Spatial Audio is enabled, but the soundstage does not update with head movement.
  • Head Tracked: Spatial Audio is enabled and the soundstage responds to changes in head orientation.

If Fixed sounds different from ordinary stereo but turning your head produces no change, that is expected behavior for Fixed, not evidence that the sensors have failed. Switch to Head Tracked before judging the tracking response.

What do I need for head tracking to work?

You need a compatible AirPods model, a connection to your iPhone, and audio or video that supports Spatial Audio. Apple’s AirPods guide lists AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max for Spatial Audio and head tracking with supported shows, movies, songs, games, and FaceTime.

Compatibility alone does not guarantee that every track, video, game, or app will offer the feature. Apple notes that Spatial Audio is unavailable for some apps or content. If the control is missing or unavailable in one place, test with another supported type of content before concluding that the AirPods’ motion tracking has failed.

  • Wear the connected AirPods and confirm the iPhone is routing audio to them.
  • Check the model against Apple’s compatibility guidance.
  • Use supported content, rather than assuming every item in an app has Spatial Audio.
  • Select Head Tracked in the app you are currently testing.

Both earbuds should be worn when you test an in-ear model, or the connected headset should be worn in the normal listening position. Start playback first; the Spatial Audio control is easiest to evaluate when the iPhone is actively sending audio to the AirPods. If another Bluetooth device is selected as the output, the AirPods setting cannot describe what you are hearing.

How do I turn on Head Tracked on my iPhone?

With your AirPods connected and in use, choose the mode in Control Center. The choice is saved automatically for that app, so make the selection while the problem app is open and playing the content you want to test.

  1. Connect and wear your compatible AirPods, then start supported audio or video in the app you want to use.
  2. Open Control Center.
  3. Touch and hold the volume control. The AirPods should be the active audio output.
  4. Tap Spatial Audio.
  5. Select Head Tracked.
  6. Play the content and turn your head gently to check whether the soundstage responds as expected.

Move slowly during the test rather than making a quick, large motion. Listen for a change in the apparent direction or position of the sound, then face the phone again and compare. The effect is a change in spatial orientation, not a separate volume control, so raising the volume will not turn tracking on.

If Head Tracked is not offered, verify the AirPods connection and try supported content in another app. The control may be unavailable because of the content or app, not because the iPhone’s tracking hardware is broken. A missing option in one app and a working option in another points first to support or the saved app state.

Why does head tracking work in one app but not another?

Spatial Audio availability can depend on both the app and the particular content. In addition, iPhone remembers the selected Spatial Audio mode per app. A setting that works in one app does not automatically mean that another app is set to Head Tracked.

Check the mode separately in each app

Open the app where tracking fails, begin playing the content, and repeat the Control Center steps. If it was set to Fixed in that app, Spatial Audio may be on while head tracking remains off. If the option is unavailable for that content, compare with a supported song, show, movie, game, or FaceTime call.

Do not assume that changing the mode while another app is in the foreground changes every app. The per-app setting is a common reason for apparently inconsistent behavior. Record which mode appears in each app so you can tell whether the problem follows the app or follows the AirPods.

Consider how the app implements spatial audio

App behavior can also reflect the app’s own spatial-audio implementation. Apple’s developer documentation explains that apps using custom spatial audio need to adopt the appropriate head-pose APIs; for iOS 18, App Store games can also receive a system spatial-audio effect. This can make behavior differ between apps even when you use the same iPhone and AirPods. See Apple’s developer documentation on personalizing spatial audio in an app.

This distinction is especially useful for games and other apps that generate their own three-dimensional sound. If Apple-supported music, a supported show, and FaceTime all respond correctly but one game does not, the evidence points toward that game’s content or implementation. There is no iPhone setting that can add head-pose support to an app that does not provide or request it.

Could an Accessibility setting change the behavior?

Yes. The Follow iPhone control under Accessibility can change whether Spatial Audio sounds as though it comes from the iPhone. Check it if head movement seems to have the opposite effect from what you expect, or if the soundstage appears to follow the phone rather than behave as expected.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then AirPods.
  3. Select the connected AirPods.
  4. Check Follow iPhone and set it as intended for your listening experience.

Apple describes this control in its iPhone guide to adjusting AirPods accessibility settings. It is separate from the per-app Spatial Audio choice in Control Center, so check both when troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review this setting even if you never deliberately changed an Accessibility option. A setting can explain why the sound appears anchored to the phone, follows a different reference, or does not match your expectation after selecting Head Tracked. Change only one control at a time, then retest the same supported content so the result is clear.

Do I need Personalized Spatial Audio?

No. Personalized Spatial Audio is optional for the basic Head Tracked setting. It creates a profile that can tune Spatial Audio rendering to the shape of your ears and head, so it is worth checking if tracking is enabled but the spatial effect sounds wrong or unconvincing.

Personalization is therefore a rendering-quality step, not a compatibility substitute. It cannot make an unsupported AirPods model, app, or track gain Spatial Audio. First make sure Head Tracked is available and selected; then personalize if the effect is present but sounds poorly positioned.

Set up or recreate the profile

Apple requires an iPhone with iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera for Personalized Spatial Audio. With your AirPods connected, use this path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings and tap the connected AirPods’ name.
  2. Choose Audio & Routing, then Personalized Spatial Audio.
  3. Tap Personalize Spatial Audio and follow the prompts for the front and ear scans.

Keep the iPhone positioned as the scan instructions request and complete both the front and ear scans. If the scan is incomplete or you want to rebuild the profile, repeat the setup. Apple’s Personalized Spatial Audio setup instructions explain the device requirements and scanning process.

If your iPhone does not have a TrueDepth camera or is below iOS 16, the profile option cannot meet Apple’s stated requirements. That does not prevent the ordinary Head Tracked switch from working when the AirPods, app, and content are otherwise compatible.

What happens to the scan data?

Apple’s Personalized Spatial Audio privacy notice says: “Camera data used to develop your profile is processed entirely on device and images are not stored.” Apple also says the profile can sync through iCloud with end-to-end encryption. This profile is distinct from the basic Head Tracked control; you can use head tracking without creating it.

That privacy distinction helps when deciding whether to personalize. A failed or unavailable scan is not a reason to disable Head Tracked, and completing a scan does not change the app-specific mode selected in Control Center. Treat personalization as optional tuning rather than a required repair.

How do I update AirPods firmware?

Firmware is a sensible maintenance check if the feature remains unreliable after you confirm compatibility, content support, app settings, and Accessibility options. Apple’s documented process is to update iOS, then give the AirPods time to update while connected to their iPhone and charging case.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
  1. Update the iPhone to the latest iOS version available for it.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Put the AirPods in their charging case and connect the case to power.
  4. Close the case lid and keep it within range of the iPhone for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Reconnect the AirPods and check the firmware version.
  6. If the update still does not complete, Apple advises resetting the AirPods and retrying.

Apple’s AirPods firmware update instructions provide the update procedure and reset guidance. There is no separate manual firmware-install button in the steps Apple documents; allow the case-and-iPhone process to run, then check the version.

Keep the case connected to power for the full waiting period and leave it close to the iPhone. Interrupting the process, moving the case out of range, or checking immediately after connecting does not establish that the firmware is current. After the wait, reconnect the AirPods, select the affected app, and choose Head Tracked again because the app’s saved mode remains part of the test.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

Use this order to avoid treating an app limitation as a hardware failure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the scope. Note whether Head Tracked is missing everywhere or only in one app, and whether the issue occurs with one item or all supported content.
  2. Verify the connection. Confirm the compatible AirPods name appears as the active output and that you are wearing the connected headset.
  3. Use a known supported experience. Try a supported song, movie, show, game, or FaceTime call instead of relying only on the original item.
  4. Set the mode in place. Open that app, play the content, and select Head Tracked from the volume control in Control Center.
  5. Review Follow iPhone. Check Settings > Accessibility > AirPods and the selected AirPods’ setting.
  6. Separate tracking from rendering. If tracking is available but positioning sounds wrong, complete or recreate Personalized Spatial Audio when iOS 16 and a TrueDepth camera are available.
  7. Refresh software. Update iOS and complete Apple’s case-and-power firmware procedure.
  8. Compare again. Test the same supported content after each change and note whether the failure follows the app or the AirPods.

This sequence also gives support staff useful information. “It does not work” is less specific than “Head Tracked is available and works in Apple Music and FaceTime, but the control is unavailable for one video app,” or “the option is available everywhere but the soundstage does not respond after updating firmware.”

What should I check before contacting Apple Support?

Work through the checks in order so you can distinguish an app or setting issue from a problem that persists across supported content.

  • Hardware: Confirm the AirPods model is supported and the AirPods are connected to the iPhone.
  • Content: Test with supported audio or video rather than only the item where the problem first appeared.
  • Mode: Select Head Tracked in Control Center while the affected app is open.
  • Accessibility: Review Settings > Accessibility > AirPods and the selected AirPods’ Follow iPhone setting.
  • Personalization: If the effect sounds wrong, verify or recreate the optional Personalized Spatial Audio profile, if your iPhone meets its requirements.
  • Software: Update iOS and follow Apple’s AirPods firmware procedure.

If Head Tracked remains unavailable across supported apps and content after these checks, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider. If it fails only in a particular app or with particular content, that difference is useful information to share: Apple documents that app and content support can vary.

Common mistakes that make a working feature look broken

  • Testing an unsupported item: Spatial Audio is not guaranteed for every track, video, game, or app.
  • Changing the wrong app’s setting: The selected mode is saved per app, not as one universal choice.
  • Confusing Fixed with Head Tracked: Fixed intentionally leaves head tracking off.
  • Skipping the Accessibility check: Follow iPhone can alter the expected reference for the soundstage.
  • Treating personalization as mandatory: Basic Head Tracked operation does not require a Personalized Spatial Audio profile.
  • Expecting a manual firmware button: Apple’s process relies on the connected iPhone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, powered case, closed lid, and waiting time.
  • Escalating after one app test: A comparison with supported content in another app helps separate app behavior from an AirPods or iPhone issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Spatial Audio head tracking during a FaceTime call?

Apple lists FaceTime among the supported experiences for compatible AirPods. Availability can still depend on the app’s current behavior and the connected AirPods, so check the Spatial Audio control during the call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Fixed work while Head Tracked does not?

Fixed enables the Spatial Audio effect without responding to head movement. Select Head Tracked in Control Center while the affected app is open; if it is unavailable only there, test another supported app or content item.

Do I need Personalized Spatial Audio to use Head Tracked?

No. Personalized Spatial Audio is optional rendering personalization. Basic Head Tracked operation requires compatible AirPods, a connected iPhone, and supported content; personalization requires iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera.

Does Follow iPhone turn head tracking off?

Follow iPhone is a separate Accessibility control that changes how the Spatial Audio soundstage relates to the iPhone. Review Settings > Accessibility > AirPods if the sound seems anchored or behaves differently from your expectation.

Why is the Spatial Audio option missing in one app?

Apple says Spatial Audio is unavailable for some apps or content, and the mode is saved per app. Try supported content in that app, then compare it with a supported song, show, movie, game, or FaceTime call elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I leave AirPods charging for a firmware update?

Apple’s documented procedure says to put the AirPods in their case, connect the case to power, close the lid, keep it within range of the iPhone, and wait at least 30 minutes before reconnecting and checking the firmware version.

Does Personalized Spatial Audio keep photos of my ears?

Apple says the camera images used to create the profile are not stored. Its privacy notice also says the camera data is processed entirely on the iPhone.

Can my Personalized Spatial Audio profile appear on another Apple device?

Apple says the profile can sync through iCloud with end-to-end encryption. That is separate from selecting Head Tracked for an individual app.

What should I tell Apple Support if the problem continues?

Report the AirPods model, iPhone and iOS version, whether Head Tracked is missing or merely ineffective, the apps and content tested, the Follow iPhone setting, personalization status, and whether the documented firmware procedure changed anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the essentials: a supported AirPods model, an active iPhone connection, supported content, and Head Tracked selected in the app where you are testing. Then check the per-app setting, Follow iPhone, optional Personalized Spatial Audio, and firmware. If the failure persists across supported apps after those documented checks, Apple Support or an authorized service provider is the appropriate next step.
