If a PS4 game crashes, shows a black screen, or runs badly on PC, start by treating it as a shadPS4 configuration or compatibility problem—not a generic “PS4 emulator” problem. Install the stable v0.20.0 QtLauncher released on 14 October 2026, verify that the GPU shadPS4 actually selects supports Vulkan 1.3 and the required extensions, then check the game’s CUSA entry before changing anything else. These minimums are from the shadPS4 wiki (2026). A secondary 2026 guide recommends roughly 10 GB of available RAM plus a page file for 1440p or 4K output, but the official floor remains 8 GB. A desktop GPU around the RTX 4060 class is a community recommendation for heavier games, not a project guarantee.
How do I diagnose a crash without guessing?
Change one thing per retest and write down the shadPS4 version, game CUSA serial and update version, selected GPU, graphics-driver version, Vulkan API version, whether add-ons are enabled, and the time of any Windows Event 1000 or 1001 crash. That record prevents a nightly build, a different GPU, and a changed game dump from being confused with one another.

Why does QtLauncher crash on open with no error?
On Windows, install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable (x64), reboot, and start shadPS4QtLauncher.exe again. A silent launcher exit is commonly this missing runtime until it has been ruled out.
Do not copy random DLL files into the emulator folder. Extract the official launcher outside protected Windows directories, run it once so it can create its configuration, and use Version Manager to install v0.20.0. If the launcher still closes, check Windows Event Viewer for an Application Error event at the same time, then retest with add-ons and custom settings disabled.
How do I fix the “Vulkan 1.3 is required” error?
Run the following command in a terminal:
vulkaninfo --summary
Inspect every physical device and compare its apiVersion with Vulkan 1.3. The shadPS4 debug assertion is explicit: “Vulkan 1.3 is required, but only 1.2 is supported by device!” If vulkaninfo is not installed, that absence does not prove Vulkan is missing; install the Vulkan tools or your GPU vendor’s current driver, then run the command again.
Force the correct GPU on a laptop
- Install the current driver package from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Do not rely on Windows Update for an integrated-GPU Vulkan driver.
- In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add the shadPS4 executable and set it to High performance.
- In QtLauncher or the emulator’s graphics settings, choose the discrete GPU explicitly rather than Auto.
- Run
vulkaninfo --summaryagain and confirm that the selected device—not merely another adapter in the list—reports Vulkan 1.3.
GitHub issue reports describe laptops where Auto selected an iGPU exposing only Vulkan 1.2; directing gpuId or the GUI picker to the NVIDIA or AMD device removed the assertion or black screen. Do not download a standalone vulkan-1.dll, hand-edit Vulkan ICD registry values, or attempt a DirectX repair for a Vulkan fault.

What does a shadPS4 black screen mean?
A black screen can be a host setup failure or a title that the compatibility list still classifies as status-nothing. First confirm Vulkan 1.3 on the selected discrete GPU, then search the official shadPS4 compatibility list by the game’s CUSA serial. The list defines status-nothing as “Games that crash when trying to launch or hang on a black screen.”

If a second known-working title runs with Vulkan 1.3 and the failing CUSA is marked status-nothing, further driver “optimization” is unlikely to help. The remaining causes are usually the title’s current compatibility state, an invalid or mismatched dump, or missing firmware modules.
Why does a game close after the shader-preparation screen?
The most common fix is to apply the matching game update to the base dump. A base game should have a folder named like CUSAxxxxx containing eboot.bin and sce_sys. An update is normally supplied as CUSAxxxxx-patch; merge the update that matches the same CUSA and region rather than mixing files from another release. Setup notes for the Bloodborne example CUSA03173 specifically call for update 1.09.
If the installation is incomplete or invalid, re-dump it and confirm the catalog number. A missing eboot.bin or sce_sys directory is an installation problem, not a shader-cache problem.
What does “module not found” mean in shadPS4?
It means the emulator cannot find a required PlayStation 4 system library. Dump the firmware modules from a PS4 console you own and copy the complete set of .sprx files from /system/common/lib/ into shadPS4’s sys_modules directory. Replace the entire directory with one consistent dump; do not combine modules from different firmware versions.

Only dump games and system files from hardware you own. The compatibility project states: “Piracy of any form is strictly prohibited. Any reports involving pirated game dumps will be removed.” The project’s official documentation is the appropriate place to learn the console-side dump process; this guide does not provide jailbreak payloads, exploit steps, or game-file downloads.
How do I fix shadPS4 slow performance, stutter, or low FPS?
Use the emulator’s counters instead of an invented benchmark. Press F10 to show FPS and Ctrl+F10 for video-debug information, then repeat the same scene twice. There is no official post-v0.20.0 FPS benchmark suite or vendor-published “X fps in Bloodborne” figure, so a counter reading is meaningful only when you identify the game, scene, resolution, build, and GPU.
First-session hitching
Stutter during the first run is often real-time shader compilation. Enable asynchronous shader compilation, allow the initial load to finish, and repeat the same route. A later pass that is smoother points to shader preparation rather than a permanently slow CPU or GPU.

1440p and 4K output consume substantially more memory. A 2026 guide recommends roughly 10 GB of free RAM plus page-file headroom for those modes; keep the official 8 GB minimum in perspective and use 16 GB as the common community target. Lower the resolution scale and close other applications before diagnosing the game at high resolution.
Thermal throttling
If clocks fall as temperatures rise, select the laptop manufacturer’s performance profile, connect AC power, and clear blocked vents. Do not disable thermal limits, undervolt, or repaste as a first response to an emulator crash.
Neo or Pro-specific failures
Some titles take a different path when PS4 Pro or Neo-enhanced content is enabled. If the base mode works but the enhanced path crashes, turn Neo/Pro mode off for that title and retest at a conservative resolution.

Why is PS4 emulation laggy on a laptop even when the specs look adequate?
The relevant specification is the GPU shadPS4 is actually using, not the fastest adapter installed in the laptop. An iGPU can satisfy neither the Vulkan 1.3 requirement nor the game’s memory demand even when the CPU and total RAM meet the published floor. Force the discrete adapter, verify its API version with vulkaninfo, use the laptop’s performance power profile, and test at native or reduced resolution before changing other settings.
Battery-saving modes, shared iGPU memory, background capture tools, and a nearly full page file can all make frame pacing worse. Keep the emulator and game on a drive with free space, close overlays, and compare the same scene with F10 enabled.
How do I fix a controller that shadPS4 does not detect?
The project notes that “Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box.” If no input arrives, open the QtLauncher controller panel, select the connected pad, and remap its buttons and sticks. The default keyboard layout emulates a DualShock: WASD controls the left stick, IJKL the right stick, and F10 toggles the FPS counter.
Motion controls require a controller with sensors or a configured motion-emulation method. Test the pad in the launcher before blaming a game-specific crash, and avoid running two remapping layers that both claim the same device.

When should I use a nightly build?
Stay on v0.20.0 while establishing a baseline. Move to a dated nightly only when its release notes or issue reference clearly addresses your crash, black screen, or title-specific regression, and keep the stable build available for comparison.
