Start by checking Sea of Thieves and Xbox service status, then use the exact Beard error code to choose a fix. If services are available and the code points to a local connection problem, try restarting the game and device before changing network settings. Matchmaking preferences can affect who you play with, but they do not repair an outage or a broken connection.
1. Check whether Sea of Thieves or Xbox services are having problems
Check the Sea of Thieves Support site for current notices, and check Xbox service status before changing your router or reinstalling the game. A service interruption or maintenance window can prevent a connection even when your home network is working normally.

Rare’s Windows/Steam troubleshooting guide recommends a service-status check first for its Store-unavailable error. That makes status a sensible first diagnostic for a suspected gameplay outage, but the Store-specific guide does not establish that every gameplay connection problem is a service outage. The guide was last updated June 23, 2023.
2. Match the fix to the Beard error code
Read the displayed error carefully and look up that code in Rare’s Beard Errors directory, last updated May 22, 2025. Its entries cover different causes, including maintenance or service interruption, lost connections, outdated game versions, account or license issues, and local network or firewall problems. Follow the action listed for your particular code: some errors call for relaunching or retrying, while others require checking an account, updating the game, or contacting support.

Do not apply the same network fix to every error. A maintenance-related code is not solved by changing router settings, and an account or license error calls for sign-in and ownership checks rather than port changes.
3. Try low-risk local checks
If services appear available and the error suggests a local connection problem, work through these checks before attempting advanced network changes.

- Quit and relaunch Sea of Thieves. If that does not help, restart the device. Restart the router if needed, following its normal restart procedure.
- Check the connection path. On a PC, you can optionally connect directly to the router with a LAN cable instead of using Wi-Fi or a network bridge. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed gameplay fix; it cannot resolve a service outage, account problem, or every router or Wi-Fi issue. Use a cable you already have if available.
- Check for VPN, firewall, or antivirus interference. The Windows/Steam support guide suggests testing whether firewall or antivirus behavior is involved, then adjusting the game’s application allow-list if the test changes the result. Do not leave security protections disabled.
The LAN, firewall, and network suggestions come from Rare’s Windows/Steam Store-availability article, not a universal guide for every Sea of Thieves platform. Its published suggestions are useful diagnostic leads, but do not establish that each setting applies to all platforms or remains current for every 2026 configuration.
4. Check accounts, updates, and installation on Windows or Steam
Windows or Microsoft Store
Confirm that the correct Microsoft Store or Xbox account is signed in, and check for game and Windows updates. Account and license problems should be addressed through the relevant sign-in and ownership checks, not by changing router ports.

Steam
Confirm that the Xbox account linked to Sea of Thieves is the intended account and is associated with the Steam account that owns the game. If installation corruption is suspected, use Steam’s file-integrity check for the game. These platform checks are included in Rare’s Windows/Steam troubleshooting guide; follow the Beard error entry as well if one is displayed.
5. Change matchmaking settings only when the symptom fits
Cross-region matchmaking
Rare says cross-region matchmaking is on by default. If performance trouble seems related to matching with players from other regions, open Main Menu > Settings > Matchmaking and toggle Disable Cross-Region Matchmaking. The setting changes cross-region matching; it is not a general repair for an outage, local network fault, or every matchmaking timeout. Cross-platform and console preferences
In Settings > Matchmaking, available preferences can affect whether you use cross-platform matchmaking. Console players can also specify a preference to play with other console players using a controller. These settings shape the player pool rather than fixing connectivity. Rare notes that “some settings may only appear on certain Platforms” in its crossplay and player matchmaking preferences article, last updated March 6, 2026.

Rare’s Windows/Steam Store guide also mentions NAT, IPv6, Teredo, Xbox network ports, trying another internet connection, and contacting an ISP if traffic may be blocked. These are advanced checks, not a checklist to apply indiscriminately. Use them only when the platform and error point to that area, and prefer the official instructions for the platform you are playing on. If a status issue or account error better explains the symptom, router changes are unlikely to help.
