If a browser’s print preview is blank, fails to open, or saves an incomplete PDF, first check whether the problem affects one page or the whole browser, then try the browser’s print workflow and an alternate PDF destination. If you need a picture of a webpage rather than a paginated document, use a screenshot tool instead: printing to PDF and taking a screenshot are different jobs.
First decide whether you need a PDF or a screenshot
A PDF made through a browser’s print command is a document-style output. It can span pages, and the printed layout may differ from the webpage. A screenshot is an image of a selected area or page. Use the print workflow when you need a document you can page through; use a screenshot when you need to preserve how content looks on screen. A screenshot image is not a searchable, paginated PDF.
Before changing settings, note the browser and operating system, the destination selected in the print dialog, and the exact symptom: a blank or failed preview, missing content in the saved file, or a request for an image rather than a PDF. Those details help distinguish a page-specific problem from a browser or print-path problem.
Work out whether the page or the print path is failing
- Try another webpage or document with the same browser and settings. If that works, the original page or document may be responsible. Website styles can affect how content prints; Microsoft suggests trying Immersive Reader where it is available.
- If possible, try another application. If printing fails only in Edge while other applications work, the problem may be in Edge or its print path. Microsoft lists the website or document, Edge, printer driver, Windows, and connectivity or hardware among possible sources of print issues. A printer driver is only one possibility, not a universal explanation for a failed Save to PDF operation.
- Separate preview trouble from output trouble. If preview will not load, focus first on the browser route and destination. If a PDF is created but its layout or appearance is wrong, check print settings and the page’s print layout.

Fix a blank or failed print preview in Edge
Retry the print flow and check the selected destination
For Edge’s “Print preview failed” problem, Microsoft recommends canceling and retrying the print operation, reopening the print dialog, and restarting Edge. Also check whether the selected printer or destination is unavailable or incorrectly installed; choose another available destination if one is listed. In some preview-failure cases, Microsoft notes that the built-in PDF viewer may be missing.
- Cancel the failed preview and try printing again.
- Close and reopen the print dialog, then retry.
- Restart Edge and try the same page again.
- If the selected destination is unavailable, select another available printer or PDF destination.
These are Edge-specific steps from Microsoft’s Edge print troubleshooting guide; they do not establish that every browser’s blank preview has the same cause.
Open the system print dialog as an alternate route
Edge documents a way to bypass its browser print dialog and open the system dialog directly: press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Option+Command+P on macOS. The labels and destinations offered by the system dialog depend on the operating system and available print destinations. This is an alternate route to test, not a guaranteed fix.

Try another browser’s built-in Save to PDF option
If the current browser’s print route still fails, try another browser’s built-in workflow. This can help identify whether the issue is specific to one browser, but switching browsers does not necessarily fix a problem caused by the page or system.

- Chrome: open the print workflow and choose Save as PDF as the destination. Google documents the steps in Print from Chrome.
- Firefox: open the print workflow and choose Save to PDF from the destination options. Mozilla documents this in How to print web pages in Firefox.
- Edge: use its print dialog, or try the system print dialog shortcut above. Microsoft’s Print in Microsoft Edge guide covers the browser workflow and print settings.
Menu wording and available options can vary by browser and operating system. If an alternate browser saves a usable file, that narrows the issue to the original browser route or its settings; it does not by itself identify the exact fault.
Correct a PDF that is saved but looks wrong
Enable background graphics when page colors are missing
In Edge, open print settings and check More settings > Background graphics if the PDF is missing background colors or graphics. This setting is relevant when the file exists but its appearance differs from the webpage. It will not repair a preview that never opens.

Try Immersive Reader on eligible pages
If a page is cluttered or its styles are making the printed result difficult to use, Edge’s Immersive Reader can provide a simpler print route on sites where the feature is available. It may change the page’s presentation, so it is a workaround for readability rather than a way to guarantee a pixel-for-pixel copy. See Microsoft’s Edge printing instructions.
Check whether an extension is printing an already-open PDF
If the failing operation uses an Adobe browser extension to print a PDF document that is already open, check the browser’s PDF viewing behavior. Adobe’s browser extension PDF printing troubleshooting, updated April 1, 2026, points to Chrome and Edge PDF settings that determine whether PDF files open in the browser or download. That guidance is specific to extension-based printing of PDF documents; it is not a general fix for printing arbitrary webpages.

Do not keep troubleshooting Print to PDF if the intended result is a picture of the page. Edge documents screenshot capture for a full page or selected area, with options to mark up and save or copy the image. Firefox also documents taking and downloading screenshots. Controls and availability can vary by browser, device, and version.

- Choose a selected-area capture when you need only a visible portion of the page.
- Choose a full-page capture when you need the page beyond the currently visible viewport, if your browser offers it.
- Use the print workflow instead when you need a paginated PDF rather than an image file.

What to record if it still fails
If none of the routes works, record the browser name and version, operating system, page or document involved, selected destination, exact error text, and whether another site or application succeeds. This information makes it possible to distinguish a page-specific failure from a browser or system print issue. Without it, there is no single confirmed cause to recommend fixing.
