Start by identifying what fails: joining Wi-Fi, reaching the internet, connecting to a Nintendo service, or staying in an online match. Record the full error code and check whether other devices on the same network still work. Switch 2 connection errors can have different causes, so the code and a few controlled comparisons are more useful than changing settings at random.

First, identify where the connection fails

Seeing your Wi-Fi network is not the same as having internet access, and internet access does not guarantee a connection to Nintendo services or a stable online match. Note the exact error code and the last stage that works.

  • Network not visible or unable to join: The console may not be connecting to the wireless router.
  • Connected to Wi-Fi but the internet test fails: The console has not established working internet access.
  • Internet works but a Nintendo service fails: The issue may involve the service connection, DNS, or a timeout.
  • Only an online match drops: Treat this as a possible dropped or timed-out connection rather than assuming a DNS setting is the cause.

Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If it also cannot reach the internet, investigate the router or internet service provider (ISP) before changing Switch 2 settings. This comparison helps locate the problem; it does not prove its cause.

Try these checks in order

1. Test close to the router, with the console undocked

Undock the Switch 2 and test it near the wireless router, then compare the result with your usual play location. Nintendo lists weak signal and wireless interference among possible causes of errors 2160-8006 and 2160-8007, and recommends testing near the router for relevant connection problems. Move metal objects and other electronic devices away from the console and router where practical.

  • Officially Licensed by Nintendo
  • LAN Adapter for Nintendo Switch
  • Fast and stable wired internet connection
  • Perfect for online multiplayer
  • Plugs into Nintendo Switch Dock

2. Change one condition at a time and rerun the connection test

Compare docked versus undocked and near-router versus usual-location results separately. After each change, run the console’s connection test and note whether internet access, Nintendo service access, or match stability changed. Nintendo’s guidance for relevant errors advises testing after changes.

3. Check DNS only when the error or symptoms point to it

Nintendo associates error 2618-0203 with possible DNS settings on the console or an ISP or DNS-service issue. Its example uses Google Public DNS. This is an optional diagnostic, not a required setting or guaranteed improvement.

  • 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲- No driver required for Nintendo Switch, Windows 11/10/8.1/8, and Linux. Simply connect and enjoy instant wired internet access without complicated setup.
  • 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲- Supports Nintendo Switch, PCs, laptops, Ultrabooks, tablets, and other USB-powered web devices; works with network equipment including modems, routers, and switches.
  1. Open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings.
  2. Select the saved network, then choose Change Settings.
  3. Open DNS Settings, choose Manual, and enter primary DNS 8.8.8.8 and secondary DNS 8.8.4.4.
  4. Save the settings and run the connection test. If manual DNS does not help, return to DNS Settings and restore Automatic.

Nintendo identifies those addresses as Google’s public DNS and notes that its use is subject to Google’s terms. A DNS change will not necessarily resolve weak signal, interference, slow internet, a service-side problem, or a dropped online match.

4. Check the router or ISP if the problem affects other devices

If multiple devices have trouble, or the console checks do not help, check whether the router is operating normally and whether the ISP reports a service issue. Nintendo says an ISP or DNS-service problem may resolve later. For router firmware updates or a factory-default reset, Nintendo directs users to the router manufacturer. A reset can change the whole home network, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than using it as an early Switch troubleshooting step.

In TV mode, the console screen turns off automatically – game displays only on your external monitor.

5. Use Ethernet as a comparison if suitable equipment is already available

A wired connection can help distinguish a wireless-specific problem from a broader internet or service issue. Nintendo says a USB LAN adapter is required when using a dock without a LAN port. Check that any adapter is compatible with the Switch 2 dock. Ethernet is an optional test, not a prerequisite for troubleshooting Wi-Fi.

6. Escalate with the error code and what you tested

If the problem persists near the router and on another known-working network, contact Nintendo Support with the exact code and your test results. One network’s failure alone is not enough to conclude that the console has a hardware fault.

What common Switch 2 connection error codes indicate

Nintendo’s guidance identifies possible causes, not a confirmed diagnosis for an individual console. This is a selected set of codes, not a complete directory; look up the exact code shown on your console in Nintendo Support.

Error code What Nintendo says may be involved Useful next step
2160-8006 / 2160-8007 DNS, slow internet, wireless interference, or weak signal. Nintendo Support. Undock the console and test near the router.

2123-0301 General online-connection troubleshooting applies. Nintendo Support. Use Nintendo’s steps for the code and rerun the connection test.
2306-0501 / 2306-0502 The connection may have dropped or timed out during an online match. Nintendo Support. Compare match stability in a stronger-signal location; do not assume DNS is the fix.
2124-8006 / 2124-8007 Nintendo UK associates these with DNS or a timeout; slow internet, interference, or weak router signal may contribute. Nintendo UK Support. Test near the router and check DNS only if indicated.

How to interpret the comparisons

  • Works near the router, fails at your usual location: Distance or interference may be affecting wireless performance.
  • Works undocked, fails docked: Keep comparing conditions one at a time; this result narrows the circumstances but does not establish a hardware fault.
  • Other devices also fail: Focus on the router, ISP, or a wider service issue before treating it as a Switch-only problem.
  • Wi-Fi fails but wired works: This points toward a wireless-specific difference, but does not by itself identify the exact cause.

These comparisons localize the problem; none guarantees a fix or proves a specific fault.
