What kind of laptop screen line is appearing?
The appearance of the line can suggest a starting point, but no pattern proves the cause by itself. Pre-boot and external-display tests are more reliable than visual appearance alone.

How do I tell whether the laptop screen or the graphics system is faulty?

What does the screenshot test show?
Take a screenshot using the method available on your Windows laptop, then view the image on an external monitor or another device.
- Line appears in the screenshot: The operating system, application, graphics driver, or GPU may be generating the artifact.
- Line is visible only on the physical laptop panel: The LCD assembly, display cable, connector, or panel electronics becomes more likely.
The screenshot test is practical rather than absolute. Graphics faults can occur at different points in the display pipeline, so use the result with the pre-boot and external-monitor tests.
What does the external-monitor test show?
Connect a known-good monitor or television with a compatible HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or other supported connection. Press Windows + P and select Duplicate or Extend.

A clean external monitor does not prove that the GPU is completely healthy. The same graphics hardware can sometimes drive the external and internal paths differently. The result mainly shows that the fault is probably limited to the internal display path.
Does the line appear before Windows starts?
Check the manufacturer logo, boot menu, BIOS/UEFI setup, and any plain pre-boot screen. If the line appears before Windows loads, a Windows application or display driver is unlikely to be the root cause.

1. Reset the graphics driver

2. Check resolution and refresh rate
Open:
Start > Settings > System > DisplayUse the resolution marked Recommended where available. Then open Advanced display and choose a refresh rate supported by the laptop panel.
Windows labels can vary by Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, graphics hardware, and manufacturer utility. An unsuitable setting can distort or destabilize the image, but a fixed line visible in BIOS will not be corrected by choosing a different Windows resolution. Dell’s display guidance recommends checking the recommended resolution when troubleshooting distortion.
3. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the line disappears in Safe Mode, a third-party driver, startup program, or software conflict becomes more likely. If the line remains, hardware becomes more likely, but Safe Mode is evidence rather than proof.
On current Windows versions, a general route is:

Should I reset Windows or update the BIOS?
A factory reset can address some software corruption, but a factory reset cannot repair a cracked panel, damaged cable, failed pixel column, or defective GPU. Do not erase Windows until the screenshot, external-monitor, and pre-boot tests make software corruption plausible and important data is backed up.

Why do laptop lines change when I move the lid?
Lines that flicker, disappear, or change when the lid moves point more strongly to a display cable, connector, or hinge-area connection than to a Windows setting.

Confirm that a USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode before buying a USB-C monitor or adapter; not every USB-C port carries video.
