Fix the problem by first identifying whether songs are missing from the iPhone, grayed out, failing during computer sync, or limited to one imported or purchased track. Missing Apple Music songs usually require the same Apple Account and Sync Library enabled everywhere. A grayed-out song needs a status check for account, restriction, catalog, hidden-item, or missing-file problems. Finder, iTunes, and Windows sync errors call for software updates, consolidated media files, security-software checks, and track-by-track isolation. The correct remedy depends on where the music came from and whether it travels through Sync Library, USB/USB-C, or Wi-Fi.
Which music-sync problem are you seeing?
Use the symptom, source, and transport to choose the shortest troubleshooting path. Do not delete a large library before checking its cloud status.
| Symptom | Most relevant source | First place to check | Likely transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| The library or several songs are missing on the iPhone | Apple Music cloud library | Apple Account and Sync Library settings | Sync Library over the internet |
| A song is gray or refuses to play | Apple Music catalog, iTunes purchase, or local import | Cloud Status and the song’s account, restriction, or file state | Sync Library or local library sync |
| Finder, iTunes, or Windows reports a sync failure | Local computer library | Software versions, media-file locations, security software, and the failing track | USB/USB-C or Wi-Fi |
| Only one imported or purchased track is affected | Single local file or purchase | Original file, purchase account, or hidden-item status | Redownload, reimport, or Sync Library |
How do I restore missing music with Sync Library?
Sign in to every device with the Apple Account tied to the Apple Music subscription, enable Sync Library on each device, and leave them online while the library updates. This is the correct route for Apple Music subscription content; a cable sync is not a substitute when cloud syncing is enabled.

On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Music and verify that the account in use is the one associated with the subscription. The Mac, Windows computer, and iPhone must all use that same Apple Account. A different account can make an otherwise available song appear absent or unplayable.

Turn on Sync Library on every device
- iPhone: Open Settings > Apps > Music, then turn on Sync Library.
- Mac: Open the Music app, choose Music > Settings > General, and select Sync Library.
- Windows Apple Music app: Open Sidebar Actions > Settings > General, then turn on Sync Library.
Keep the source computer and iPhone connected to the internet while the update runs. Large libraries can take time to appear, so check again after the source library has finished processing rather than repeatedly changing settings.
Update the cloud library from the source computer
On the Mac or PC that contains the complete library, inspect the Cloud Status and Cloud Download columns in the Songs view. These columns show whether a track is available in the cloud, waiting to upload, or tied to a local file that cannot currently be found. Use Update Cloud Library, then leave the computer online long enough for the change to propagate to the iPhone.
When should I toggle Sync Library off and on?
Apple identifies turning Sync Library off and on again as a possible fix for persistent missing songs. Back up or otherwise preserve locally downloaded music first: turning the feature off removes downloaded music from the device, and a large library may take longer to resynchronize after it is enabled again. Apple also warns that “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.” Treat the cloud library as a synchronization feature, not as your only copy of imported recordings.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why is a song grayed out or unable to play?
A gray song is usually an account, restriction, catalog, hidden-item, or missing-file issue rather than a damaged iPhone. Check the song’s status on the source Mac or PC, then apply the remedy that matches the indicator.
Is the iPhone using the purchasing or subscription account?
Sign in with the Apple Account that bought the track or owns the Apple Music subscription. If a family member or an older account purchased the item, the currently signed-in account may not be licensed to play it. For a purchased iTunes Store song that is missing, verify the account and redownload the purchase.

Are explicit-content restrictions blocking the track?
Clean-content restrictions can prevent explicit tracks from playing. If the listener is permitted to access that material, change the content restriction so explicit music is allowed, then return to the song. Restrictions can affect playback even when the track is present in the library.
Was the song hidden?
A hidden purchase or catalog item can remain unavailable in ordinary library views. Unhide the item from the account’s music purchase controls, then allow the library to update before testing playback again.
Was the catalog version removed?
If Cloud Status says No longer available, the catalog item has been removed. Search for an available replacement version and replace the unavailable entry; repeatedly refreshing the iPhone cannot restore a version that is no longer offered in the catalog.
Can the original local file be found?
An imported track may still be listed even though its audio file has moved or been deleted. An exclamation point in Cloud Status means the original file cannot be located. Use Locate or Find Files to point Music to the file, or reimport it from the original source. If the file is genuinely gone, obtain the original recording again before importing.
What do the cloud-status indicators mean?
| Indicator | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Exclamation point | The original local file cannot be located | Use Locate or Find Files, or reimport from the original source |
| Waiting | The track has not finished syncing | Keep the source computer online, run Update Cloud Library, and wait |
| No longer available | The catalog item was removed | Find an available replacement version and replace the entry |
How do I repair one purchased or imported track?
Repair a single item at its source instead of resetting the entire library. The right operation differs for an iTunes Store purchase and a file imported from a CD or another source.

For an iTunes Store purchase
- Confirm that the computer and iPhone use the Apple Account that purchased the song.
- Check the account’s purchased music and redownload the track if it is absent from the local library.
- Allow the download to finish, then run Update Cloud Library if Sync Library is enabled.
- Test the song on the computer before checking the iPhone, so you know the local purchase itself is playable.
For a CD or other imported file
- Locate the original audio file or physical source.
- If Cloud Status shows an exclamation point, use Locate or Find Files to reconnect the existing library entry.
- If the file cannot be found or will not play, delete the broken library entry and import the original again.
- Let the computer finish updating the cloud library, then check the iPhone.
Reimporting creates a new, readable source entry; it does not make an unavailable Apple Music catalog item return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I fix Finder or iTunes sync errors?
Computer-sync failures are usually resolved by updating both operating systems, putting media files in a consistent location, checking interference from security software, and isolating a bad track or small group of tracks.
Update the software first
- Update macOS and iOS.
- On macOS Mojave or earlier, update iTunes as well.
- On Windows, update the Apple software used for the connection before retrying.
An old device-management component can fail even when the music itself is valid, so perform these updates before repeatedly reconnecting the iPhone.
Consolidate media files
Consolidate the music library so its media files are stored in one location. A library that points to files scattered across disconnected drives or moved folders can play on one computer session yet fail when a sync operation tries to read every item. After consolidation, confirm that the source tracks play locally and retry the device sync.
Check third-party security software
Security software can interfere with device communication or access to the media folder. Temporarily check whether the security product is blocking the Apple music or device process according to its own controls, then restore protection and create an appropriate exception if necessary. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent workaround.

Isolate the offending track
- Attempt a sync with a small batch of known-good songs.
- If that succeeds, add tracks in progressively larger groups.
- When the failure returns, divide the last group until the specific item or items are identified.
- For a purchased item, redownload it; for a CD or other import, delete the broken entry and reimport the original.
This approach distinguishes a library-wide connection problem from one malformed, missing, or unavailable track without discarding the rest of the library.
How do I sync music from a Windows PC to an iPhone?
The Apple Devices app can sync locally stored music over USB/USB-C or Wi-Fi. Connect the iPhone, select it in the app’s sidebar, and choose the music to sync; use Sync Library instead when the songs come from an Apple Music subscription and Sync Library is enabled.
USB/USB-C procedure
- Install or open the Apple Devices app on the Windows PC.
- Connect the iPhone with a data-capable USB or USB-C cable; a charging-only cable cannot carry the music-sync data.
- Select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Open the music-sync controls, choose the albums, artists, playlists, or other local items to copy, and apply the sync.
- Keep the iPhone connected until the operation completes, then eject it through the app before unplugging.
Apple notes that Apple Music subscription songs cannot be manually synced by this method while Sync Library is enabled. For those songs, enable Sync Library on the Windows Apple Music app and the iPhone instead.
Wi-Fi procedure
Wi-Fi syncing becomes available after the iPhone has been set up over USB. The iPhone and Windows computer must share a network. If automatic Wi-Fi syncing is configured through the older iTunes workflow, iTunes must remain open and the iPhone must be connected to power for the automatic operation.

- Wait for the status to finish before disconnecting.
After an initial USB setup, Wi-Fi syncing can be used when both devices share a network. For automatic Wi-Fi syncing, leave iTunes open and keep the iPhone plugged into power. If the same track repeatedly causes an error, return to the small-batch isolation method rather than retrying the entire library unchanged.
Which remedy fits the music source and transport?
Use this decision table before changing settings. It prevents a cable fix from being applied to an account problem or a catalog problem.
| Music source | Transport | Best first remedy | What the remedy cannot fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Music subscription | Sync Library over the internet | Match the Apple Account and enable Sync Library on every device | A catalog item removed from Apple Music |
| iTunes Store purchase | Redownload or Sync Library | Verify the purchasing account and redownload the item | A purchase unavailable to the signed-in account |
| CD or other local import | USB/USB-C, Wi-Fi, or Sync Library | Reconnect or reimport the original file, then sync | A file that no longer exists unless the original is recovered |
What should I check before trying the sync again?
- Confirm the iPhone and source computer use the intended Apple Account.
- For subscription music, verify Sync Library is enabled on the iPhone and source computer.
- Keep all Sync Library devices online while changes propagate.
- Inspect Cloud Status before deleting a missing or gray entry.
- Run Update Cloud Library on the source Mac or PC.
- For a local sync, use a data-capable USB/USB-C cable or the configured Wi-Fi connection.
- Make sure the source tracks play on the computer.
- After a sync error, test a small batch and add music until the offending item is found.
- Redownload purchases and reimport damaged or missing local files.
- Preserve local downloads before toggling Sync Library off, because disabling it removes downloaded music.
These checks separate account and catalog availability from transport failures, so the next attempt changes the cause rather than merely repeating the same operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning Sync Library off delete my playlists?
Turning the feature off removes downloaded music from the device, while the cloud library remains a separate synchronization record. Preserve any local-only recordings and allow the library to resynchronize before judging whether playlists have returned.
Can a charging-only iPhone cable sync songs?
No. Wired Windows syncing requires a cable that carries data over USB or USB-C. A cable that only supplies power may charge the iPhone but will not provide the connection needed by the Apple Devices app or iTunes.
Why does a song play on my computer but not on my iPhone?
The computer may have the local original while the iPhone is receiving a cloud entry that is waiting, unavailable, hidden, restricted, or tied to another account. Check the source computer’s Cloud Status and the account used on both devices.
Does replacing a gray Apple Music song restore its original metadata?
Replacing a catalog item with another available version can restore playback, but the replacement may have different artwork, edits, or release information. Treat it as a new catalog version rather than an exact recovery of the removed item.
