If your Ryzen AI laptop does not show an NPU or a Windows AI feature is unavailable, check the problem in three layers: hardware eligibility, the base NPU driver, and the Windows feature or application runtime. “Ryzen AI” branding by itself does not guarantee Copilot+ features. A Copilot+ PC needs a supported NPU rated at more than 40 TOPS, at least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage, while individual features can add their own requirements.
Start by recording your exact laptop model, processor, Windows version and build, the missing feature, and any Device Manager warning. Then verify eligibility, install the laptop maker’s validated NPU package when available, use AMD’s documented installer when appropriate, confirm that NPU0 appears in Task Manager, and update the separate Windows components or developer runtimes the feature needs.
Why is the NPU or an AI feature missing?
There are three different failures that look similar on screen. Separating them prevents you from repeatedly reinstalling a driver when the laptop is below a feature’s hardware threshold, or from changing drivers when the real problem is a Windows component or application runtime.

AMD’s Windows ML documentation treats the NPU driver as one component of a developer setup, not as a universal switch that enables every Windows AI experience. Microsoft likewise documents different hardware and build conditions for different Windows AI APIs.

Does a Ryzen AI laptop qualify for Copilot+ features?
Check eligibility before reinstalling anything. Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 systems with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. The current requirements page lists AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series among compatible processor families, but the processor name alone does not prove that a particular laptop configuration qualifies.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements page for the current Copilot+ definition. Confirm all of the following:
- The installed processor belongs to a supported family and the laptop exposes an NPU meeting the 40+ TOPS threshold.
- The physical memory is at least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5.
- The system has at least 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage.
- The installed Windows edition and build are supported for the feature.
- The individual AI feature is available for that device, software version, and region.
These checks matter because Copilot+ eligibility is a class-level requirement. An application that uses an NPU may have a different support list, and a laptop can have a functioning NPU without qualifying for every Copilot+ experience.
What information should I collect before troubleshooting?
Write down the machine’s identity and symptom before changing drivers. This gives you and an OEM support technician enough context to distinguish a missing device from an unsupported feature.

- Open Settings > System > About and record the full laptop model, processor name, installed RAM, and system type.
- Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the Windows edition, version, and OS build. - Describe exactly what is missing: no NPU graph, an unavailable Copilot+ option, an application error, or an API that falls back to another processor.
- Open Device Manager and note whether an AI accelerator, NPU, or unknown device has a warning icon. Record any displayed driver provider and version instead of assuming the label is the same on every Ryzen generation.
- Record whether the laptop maker’s support page offers a chipset or NPU package for your exact model.
Microsoft notes that support can depend on the complete PC configuration, Windows build, API, and feature. AMD also advises laptop owners to use packages validated for the specific system.
How do I install the correct Ryzen AI NPU driver?
Use the laptop manufacturer’s package first when one is available. AMD states that OEM drivers are customized and validated for system-specific features and optimizations. A generic package can be appropriate when the OEM does not provide one or when AMD’s documentation explicitly matches your processor and Windows setup, but it should not automatically replace a model-specific package.
Option 1: Install the laptop maker’s package
- Go to the support page for the exact laptop model, not just a similarly named processor.
- Download the NPU, AI accelerator, chipset, or platform driver listed for your installed Windows version. If the page offers several generations, match the complete model and processor.
- Close applications that use hardware acceleration, run the installer as administrator, and restart when prompted.
- After rebooting, check Task Manager > Performance for NPU0. Then retest the specific AI feature.
AMD’s support guidance recommends OEM packages for laptops; its example support page is available at AMD’s Ryzen AI processor driver support.
Option 2: Use AMD’s documented NPU installer
AMD’s Ryzen AI Software installation instructions specify NPU driver version 32.0.203.280 or newer for the documented setup. The same page identifies 32.0.203.376 as a production driver for Phoenix, Hawk Point, Strix, Strix Halo, and Krackan Point. Those are documented version references, not a promise that they are the newest package for every laptop; check the current AMD release notes and your OEM page before installing.

- Download the NPU driver ZIP from the applicable AMD Ryzen AI documentation or package location.
- Extract the ZIP to a folder you can access easily, such as a temporary folder under your user profile.
- Open the extracted folder in File Explorer, right-click an empty area, and choose Open in Terminal. Select an administrator terminal if Windows presents that option, or launch Windows Terminal as administrator and change to the extracted directory.
- Run the installer executable:
npu_sw_installer.exe. - Allow the installation to finish, restart Windows, and verify the device in Task Manager.
The complete AMD procedure and version notes are in the Ryzen AI Software Windows ML installation guide. Do not substitute a random driver-utility site or a package for a different processor generation.
How can I verify that Windows detects the NPU?
AMD’s documented verification point is Task Manager’s NPU performance view. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, and look for NPU0.
- NPU0 appears: The base device is being exposed to Windows. If an AI feature is still missing, move to eligibility, Windows servicing, or application-runtime checks rather than reinstalling the same driver.
- NPU0 does not appear: Check Device Manager for a warning or unknown device, confirm that the driver matches the exact laptop, and consult the OEM support channel. There is no single Device Manager label or universal repair command that applies to every Ryzen AI generation.
- The entry appears and disappears: Record the Windows build and driver version, restart once after installation, and report the intermittent state to the OEM with those records. Avoid stacking packages from different generations.
The AMD installation instructions describe this Task Manager check at the Ryzen AI Windows ML setup page. A visible NPU graph confirms detection; it does not by itself grant Copilot+ eligibility or prove that a particular API supports the device.

Once NPU0 is visible, stop treating the problem as a driver-only failure. Recheck the 40+ TOPS, memory, storage, Windows, device, and regional conditions for the specific Copilot+ experience.

- Run Windows Update from Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart.
- Return to the feature’s own documentation or Microsoft’s requirements page and confirm that the installed Windows edition and build are supported.
- Check whether the feature has an account, language, region, or staged-availability condition. Microsoft says individual features can vary by device, software, and region.
- Test another documented NPU-dependent experience only as a diagnostic. One working feature does not establish support for every API.
Microsoft says built-in Copilot+ AI components are serviced independently through Windows Update. That means a correctly installed NPU driver and a current Windows component are separate conditions. Read the servicing explanation at Microsoft’s Windows Copilot+ AI components page.
Are Windows ML and Windows App SDK requirements the same as the NPU driver?
No. AMD’s Windows ML installation guide lists Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100 or newer), the NPU driver, and Windows App SDK as separate elements of its developer-oriented setup. Installing the NPU driver does not automatically install an application’s package, SDK, or runtime.
For a Windows ML developer application
- Confirm that the system meets the guide’s Windows 11 24H2/build 26100-or-newer condition.
- Install and verify the required NPU driver separately.
- Install the Windows App SDK version and package dependencies required by the application.
- Use the application’s own logs or diagnostics to determine whether it selected the NPU, CPU, or another supported accelerator.
Use the current AMD Windows ML installation documentation for the developer stack. Do not present those requirements as universal prerequisites for every built-in Windows AI feature.
Why can one Windows AI API work while another fails?
Windows AI APIs do not have identical hardware support. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance gives API-specific device information and describes a Windows 11 25H2 build requirement for its Phi Silica validation scenario. That build condition is scoped to the documented scenario; it is not a blanket requirement that unlocks every AI feature.

Identify the exact API or application that fails, then follow its support matrix and troubleshooting page. Include the API name, Windows build, processor, NPU driver version, and error text when asking for help. The relevant guidance is Microsoft’s Windows AI API troubleshooting documentation.

What mistakes should I avoid?
- Assuming the product name is enough: Verify the full laptop configuration and feature requirements.
- Installing a desktop-oriented package on a laptop without checking: Prefer the OEM package because it is validated for that system.
- Calling the NPU driver the “AI feature update”: The driver, Windows AI components, and developer runtimes are serviced separately.
- Using an old version number as a permanent answer: AMD’s documented 32.0.203.280 minimum and 32.0.203.376 production reference are tied to the cited documentation; release notes can change.
- Expecting one command to repair every generation: AMD does not establish a universal Device Manager label or repair command for all Ryzen AI laptops.
- Testing only the brand name: Record the exact API or feature, because support varies between Windows AI experiences.
When should I contact the laptop manufacturer?
Contact the OEM when NPU0 remains absent after the model-specific package and restart, when Device Manager shows an unresolved warning, or when the OEM package conflicts with a generic AMD installer. Provide the full model, processor, Windows edition/version/build, installed driver version, screenshots of Task Manager and Device Manager, and the exact feature or API that fails.
Use AMD’s generic documentation for version and installation context, but let the laptop manufacturer determine whether a customized package, firmware update, or model-specific recovery path is appropriate. This avoids replacing a validated system package with one that lacks the laptop’s required integrations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Ryzen AI laptop use AI features without being a Copilot+ PC?
Yes. Copilot+ is a defined Windows 11 hardware class, while individual applications and APIs can have different NPU support lists. A laptop may run an NPU-aware application even when its complete configuration does not meet Copilot+ requirements.
Will reinstalling the NPU driver erase my files or applications?
The documented driver installation replaces the driver software and requires a restart; it is not a Windows reset. Close hardware-accelerated applications first and keep the downloaded package so you can provide its version to support if the result is unchanged.
Why does an AI feature appear on one laptop but not another with the same processor?
The processor is only one part of eligibility. Memory and storage configuration, OEM validation, Windows build, feature rollout, region, and the individual API’s support rules can differ between otherwise similar laptop models.
What details should I include in an OEM support request for a missing NPU?
Include the exact model and processor, Windows edition/version/build from winver, NPU driver provider and version, screenshots of Task Manager’s Performance page and any Device Manager warning, and the name and error message of the failing feature or application.
