If Microsoft Teams is stuck on Offline, first check whether your status is actually Appear offline or whether Teams is disconnected. Reset a manually selected status, then test Teams on the web to help identify whether the problem is your account, network, or installed app. If the app itself is at fault, update it or use the cache-reset instructions for your Teams version.

Try these five fixes in order. The cache steps differ between new and classic Teams, so identify which version you use before deleting files or resetting the app.

Before troubleshooting: check what “offline” means

Appear offline is a status you can select to make yourself look offline to other people, even though you may still receive messages and notifications. It can remain selected indefinitely if you do not set a duration. By contrast, Offline can mean you are signed out on all devices or Teams cannot communicate with the presence service. Microsoft explains how Teams presence works.

Teams also changes presence automatically based on activity and app state. A locked or idle computer normally changes your status to Away; when the computer sleeps, it can become Offline. On mobile, Teams can show Away while the app is in the background and can show Offline after 24 hours of inactivity. These automatic changes are different from a manually selected Appear offline status.

1. Reset your status and remove any status duration

A manually selected status or its duration can keep your presence from returning to normal. In Teams for desktop or the web:

  1. Select your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select your current status.
  3. Select Reset status, or choose Available.

To check a timed status, open the status menu, select Duration, choose the status you want and a reset duration, then select Done. Teams supports durations for every status except Available. Choosing a new status or Reset status removes the previous duration. For a manually selected Appear offline status, choose Available rather than waiting for it to expire.

You can also enter /available in the Teams search box. To change status on mobile, tap Menu, tap your current status, and choose a different one.

2. Sign out, then test Teams on the web

A stale sign-in session can interfere with presence. Microsoft recommends testing the web version if the desktop or mobile app cannot reconnect. Microsoft’s reconnection guidance includes this check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select your profile picture.
  2. Select Sign out.
  3. Reopen Teams and sign in again, completing any authentication prompts.
  4. Open Teams for the web and check your status there.

If your status is correct on the web but not in the desktop app, the desktop installation, its cache, or its local session is a likely cause. If it is wrong in both places, investigate account presence, network connectivity, service availability, or an administrative issue. Check other devices too, since presence can be affected by the device on which you were most recently active.

3. Check your network, VPN, and service availability

Teams needs an active connection to update presence. Try these checks:

  1. Open another website to confirm your internet connection works.
  2. If you use a VPN, turn it off temporarily and test Teams again. If you need a corporate network to sign in, follow your organization’s network requirements.
  3. If your connection is unreliable, restart the Wi-Fi modem or router.
  4. Check Microsoft’s official service-status account for a Teams incident.
  5. If possible, test Teams on a different network, such as a mobile hotspot.

If Teams works on another network, the original network, VPN, proxy, firewall, or Teams endpoint connectivity may be blocking presence updates. If you use a work or school account and the status remains wrong, ask your administrator to run the Teams Presence diagnostic in the Microsoft 365 admin center. They can also check the organization’s connectivity to Teams endpoints. Microsoft documents the diagnostic and related limitations in its presence troubleshooting guidance.

4. Clear or reset the Teams cache

Cache and reset steps depend on whether you use new or classic Teams. Close Teams before clearing a cache. Resetting new Teams on Windows removes app data, including personalization settings. Microsoft’s cache-clearing instructions list the current procedures.

  2. Press Windows key + R and enter %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams.

What Teams should do automatically

Teams does not keep you Available indefinitely. Automatic presence depends on activity and the state of your devices: a locked or idle computer normally changes to Away, a sleeping computer can become Offline, and a mobile app in the background can show Away before becoming Offline after 24 hours of inactivity. Signing out of Teams on all devices also makes you Offline. A manually selected Appear offline status, however, can remain indefinitely.

On Teams for the web, Settings > Notifications and Activity > Presence > Keep my current status when I’m active outside of Teams on the web can help prevent an incorrect Away status while you work in other tabs or apps. Allow the browser permission when prompted. This setting helps with Away detection; it does not fix a disconnected session or a manually selected Appear offline status.

FAQ

Does Appear offline mean Microsoft Teams has no internet connection?

No. Appear offline is a status you can select, and you may still receive messages and notifications. A sign-in failure or network outage is a separate issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I force Teams to show me as Available?

On desktop or the web, select your profile picture, select your current status, and choose Reset status or Available. You can also enter /available in the Teams search box.

Why is Teams Offline on both desktop and web?

If both versions show Offline, the cause is less likely to be limited to the local desktop installation. Check whether you are signed in on another device, test your network and VPN, and check service availability. For a work or school account, ask your administrator to run the Teams Presence diagnostic.

Which Teams cache folder should I delete?

It depends on your version. New Teams and classic Teams use different cache locations, and new Teams on Windows can also be reset in Windows Settings. Follow the section for your specific version rather than deleting a classic Teams folder for a new Teams installation.

Does clearing the cache uninstall Teams?

No. Clearing a cache does not uninstall Teams or delete your account. However, resetting new Teams on Windows removes app data, including personalization settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

First determine whether you selected Appear offline or Teams is genuinely Offline. Reset your status, sign out and test the web version, then check your network and use the cache-reset instructions for your Teams version. If the status remains wrong on both desktop and web, ask your work or school administrator to check presence and network connectivity.
