First identify what is failing: dictation turns your speech into prompt text, Read aloud speaks a written response, Copilot Voice starts a live spoken conversation, and “Hey Copilot” listens for a Windows wake phrase. These features have different controls and availability, so start with the matching fix below. Microsoft says availability can depend on subscription and region.
Identify the Copilot feature that is not working
- Dictation: your speech should appear as text in a prompt. Microsoft lists dictation for work or school accounts.
- Read aloud: Copilot should speak a written response. Open the response menu, choose More options, then Read aloud.
- Copilot Voice: this is a live, spoken back-and-forth conversation. Start it using the voice icon in the composer or the relevant mobile control.
- “Hey Copilot”: this is a separate Windows wake-word feature, not the same control as starting a voice chat. Microsoft says it is off by default.
Microsoft describes dictation and Read aloud for work or school accounts, and Copilot Voice for work or school and personal accounts. Feature availability may vary by subscription and region.
Fix microphone access and input problems
Allow microphone access
If your browser or Copilot app prompts for microphone access, allow it. If you denied access earlier, change the permission in the browser or device settings. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on microphone access and, where applicable, access for the relevant app or desktop apps.
Select and test the right microphone in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- Select the microphone you intend to use.
- Use the available input or test controls to check whether Windows receives a signal.
- Check that the device is connected, the headset is not muted, and the input volume is high enough.
Microsoft Support’s Fix microphone problems page says: “If you are having trouble with your microphone features, or with the microphone on your headset or webcam, the following information can help you troubleshoot and resolve issues.”

Improve speech recognition
Try speaking clearly in a quieter location, and make sure the selected microphone has an adequate input level. Microsoft notes that reducing background noise can improve voice accuracy. If the built-in microphone seems to be the problem, try a headset or external microphone as a diagnostic; neither is a Copilot requirement.
Fix a Copilot Voice session that will not start or ends
Copilot Voice needs an internet connection. Confirm the device is online, then grant microphone permission if prompted and start a voice chat from the voice control. Voice conversations can disconnect automatically after inactivity or a session limit. Microsoft’s general instructions do not give a universal session duration, so if a conversation ends, start a new voice chat rather than relying on a fixed time estimate.

Fix a missing or unavailable Read aloud control
Open a response’s More options menu and look for Read aloud. If the speaker control is missing, Microsoft recommends updating the app and checking that microphone and audio permissions are enabled. Read aloud plays a written response; it is distinct from dictation and live Copilot Voice.
Fix the Windows “Hey Copilot” wake word
- Open settings in the applicable Windows Copilot app and enable Listen for “Hey Copilot”.
- Make sure the PC is on, unlocked, connected to the internet, and that Copilot is running.
- Say the wake phrase in English. Microsoft currently documents English support for the wake phrase; this does not establish which languages may be available during a conversation.
An offline PC cannot establish the voice call. If the wake phrase still does not start Copilot, use the app’s press-to-talk or voice control while checking that the app is open and the PC is online.

Address Bluetooth headset playback problems
Microsoft says some Bluetooth headsets may have reduced playback quality while “Hey Copilot” is enabled. Check the headset manufacturer for current firmware or drivers. If the problem continues, Microsoft suggests disabling the wake-word feature and using press-to-talk instead.
When to troubleshoot Windows audio drivers
If Windows still cannot detect the microphone after you have checked permissions, selected the intended input, confirmed its connection, and checked its input level, continue with Microsoft’s Windows audio-device and driver troubleshooting. Follow the update steps indicated there; reinstalling drivers is not the first step.

Privacy and account notes
Microsoft describes different data handling by feature and account type. Its overview says work or school Copilot Voice audio used for feedback scenarios is temporarily stored and deleted after 48 hours. Microsoft describes different handling for dictation and Read aloud; for personal accounts, transcripts are handled like other Copilot conversation history. Consult Microsoft’s current privacy and feature documentation for the details that apply to your account.
