Most Arctis Nova 3X problems come from one of four causes: the USB-C dongle is set to the wrong console mode, the host selected a different microphone or output, the wireless link is being interfered with, or a detachable part is not seated correctly. Start by selecting the dongle’s Xbox position for Xbox, or PC for a computer, PS5, or docked Nintendo Switch. Connect the dongle directly, turn on the headset, and listen for the connection chime while the LED blinks slowly. For Bluetooth, turn on the headset, press the Power button once, and choose Arctis Nova 3X Wireless on the phone or tablet.

The sections below take you from connection setup through microphone routing, one-sided audio, dropouts, re-pairing, power resets, and replacement-part decisions. Follow them in order so you can tell a host setting from a headset fault before buying anything.

What should I check first when the Nova 3X will not connect?

Confirm the connection path before changing Windows or console settings. The USB-C dongle has a physical Wireless Mode Switch, and the wrong position can make a correctly working headset appear dead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox connection

  1. Slide the dongle’s Wireless Mode Switch to Xbox.
  2. Plug the dongle directly into the Xbox console rather than through an unpowered hub or unrelated adapter.
  3. Power on the headset.
  4. Wait for the connection chime and the slowly blinking LED. Those signals indicate that the headset and dongle have linked.

PC, PlayStation 5, or docked Nintendo Switch

  1. Move the switch to PC. This is the required position for PC, PS5, and docked Switch use.
  2. Insert the dongle directly into a USB-C port, or use the supplied USB-C-to-A adapter for a USB-A port.
  3. Turn on the headset and wait for the connection chime and slow LED blink.

If you receive no chime, try a different USB port while keeping the dongle in the correct mode. A direct connection removes a hub, extension, or adapter as a possible source of detection and power problems.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Bluetooth connection

  1. Turn the headset on.
  2. Press the Power button once while it is already on. The button switches the headset between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz operation.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or tablet and select Arctis Nova 3X Wireless.
  4. Wait for the slow blue LED blink, which indicates the Bluetooth connection state.

SteelSeries describes this as switching between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth “on the fly” with the Power Button. Bluetooth and dongle operation are separate connection paths, so troubleshoot the path you are actually using rather than changing settings for both at once.

Why is my Nova 3X microphone not working?

A silent microphone requires two checks: the microphone must be physically unmuted and seated, and the host must route recording to the Nova 3X. Test both before assuming the microphone has failed.

Check the headset itself

  • Release the headset mute control.
  • Remove and firmly reinsert the detachable ClearCast microphone so its connector is fully seated.
  • Inspect the microphone plug and socket for visible damage or contamination.
  • If the microphone has a windscreen, check that it is not obstructing the microphone opening or sitting loose against it.

Set the correct input on Xbox

Open the Xbox audio or accessory settings and confirm that the Nova 3X is the selected headset device. Check the microphone-monitoring setting as well; monitoring that is disabled can make you think the microphone is not transmitting even when a party or game is using it. The exact labels can vary by Xbox system software, so use the headset device and microphone sections rather than the general speaker-volume control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the correct input on PlayStation 5

In the PS5 sound settings, choose the Nova 3X as the input device. Speak while watching the input meter or using a party test. If another controller or USB device remains selected, the headset can play game audio while the console continues listening to a different microphone.

Set the correct input on Windows 10 or 11

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Turn on Microphone access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  5. Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  6. Under Input, select the Nova 3X.
  7. Run Windows’ built-in microphone test and speak at a normal level.

If Windows does not list the headset or the test remains silent after those permissions are enabled, Microsoft’s guidance is to update or reinstall the relevant audio drivers. Restart the computer after a driver change, then select the Nova 3X again under Input; applications opened before the change may retain the old device.

Use a second host to separate software from hardware

Test the microphone over Bluetooth on a phone or on another computer, or test the dongle on another compatible host. If it works elsewhere, the original console or computer still has a routing, permission, or driver problem. If it fails on every path after the mute and seating checks, inspect the detachable microphone and its socket before considering a replacement.

Why is there no sound in one ear or why does the audio sound muffled?

Missing or muffled audio is usually caused by the wrong dongle mode, an incorrect output device, volume or balance settings, or a poor physical connection. Check those in that order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the wireless path and output device

  • For Xbox, verify the dongle switch is on Xbox; for PC, PS5, and docked Switch, verify PC.
  • Connect the dongle directly to the host and make sure it is fully inserted.
  • Set the host’s output device to the Nova 3X rather than the television, monitor, controller, laptop speakers, or another USB headset.
  • Increase the headset’s volume and check the game or application’s own output slider.

Check stereo balance

If only the left or right speaker plays, inspect the host’s left/right balance control and return it to the center. A system-wide balance setting can affect every application even when the game’s own audio options look normal.

Compare another connection

Switch to Bluetooth or test a second host. If both ears work there, the original dongle connection or host output selection is the likely cause. If the same ear remains silent on every host, inspect the affected earcup, the dongle, and the USB-C-to-A adapter for physical damage. Do not bend the detachable microphone connector while checking the headset; it is a separate component, but damage around the earcup or socket can indicate a broader hardware problem.

When basic routing does not solve it

SteelSeries’ support index has model-specific articles for muffled sound, dongle detection, microphone failure, hardware reset, and pairing. Use the article that matches the symptom after completing the mode, direct-connection, output, volume, and balance checks; model-specific reset instructions are preferable to a generic headset procedure.

Why does the Nova 3X keep disconnecting?

Reduce distance and radio interference first, then update firmware and re-pair the headset. An Argos FAQ describes wireless operation as “usually within 10m”; that is general support guidance, not an independently measured Nova 3X performance guarantee.

Improve the radio link

  • Keep the headset within the recommended range and avoid moving behind multiple walls or large metal objects.
  • Move the dongle away from Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, and microwave ovens, all of which can add radio interference.
  • Plug the dongle directly into the console or PC instead of a hub, monitor port, or long extension.
  • On a desktop computer, use the supplied adapter only when necessary and position the dongle where the computer chassis is not shielding it.

Update and re-pair

Install available Nova 3X firmware updates using SteelSeries’ supported update process, then restart the host. Firmware updates can address compatibility and connection behavior, but they do not repair a physically damaged connector. If dropouts continue after the update, follow the re-pair procedure below.

Interpret the pattern

  • Disconnects only at distance: treat range or interference as the primary suspect.
  • Disconnects when the dongle is moved: check the USB port, adapter, and dongle seating.
  • Disconnects on several hosts: re-pair, then test for a headset or dongle fault.
  • Bluetooth works but 2.4 GHz fails: concentrate on dongle mode, USB detection, firmware, and pairing rather than the microphone.

How do I pair the Nova 3X dongle again?

The headset and dongle are paired by default, but you can restore the link manually. Keep the dongle connected throughout the procedure.

  1. Connect the dongle to the host in the correct Xbox or PC mode.
  2. Hold the dongle’s Pairing button for four seconds.
  3. If the headset is on, press the headset Power button three times. Continue until you hear “2.4 G pairing mode” and the LED ring begins blinking rapidly.
  4. If the headset is off, hold its Power button for four seconds instead.
  5. Wait for the Connected sound and a slow LED blink.

Rapid blinking during the procedure means pairing is in progress; it is not the final connected state. If no Connected sound follows, repeat the sequence with the dongle directly connected, confirm the mode switch, and try another compatible USB port.

What should I do if the headset will not power on or charge?

Charge through the headset’s USB-C port before attempting a reset. The product guide uses these LED colors for the remaining battery level:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
LED color Battery range shown by the guide How to use the information
Green 100–51% The headset reports more than half charge.
Yellow 50–15% Plan a charge if you are about to start a long session.
Orange 14–6% Charge soon; the guide presents this as a low-battery range.
Red 5–1% Connect the USB-C charging cable promptly.

These percentages describe the indicator ranges, not a guaranteed number of playing hours. A cable or charger that works with another device can still have a loose connection at the headset, so check that the USB-C plug is fully inserted.

Use the hardware reset only after charging

Argos advises charging first and then holding the reset pinhole or button for 5–10 seconds when the headset will not power on. The exact reset location and sequence are model-specific; use SteelSeries’ Nova hardware-reset article for the documented procedure rather than forcing a button or inserting an object into the wrong opening.

Should I use 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth?

Use the USB-C dongle for console or PC game audio when you want the dedicated 2.4 GHz path, and use Bluetooth for a phone or tablet. The headset’s Power button switches between the two modes.

Do not treat a successful Bluetooth test as proof that the dongle is healthy; it only shows that the headset can operate over a different radio path. Conversely, a working dongle connection does not prove that a phone’s Bluetooth permissions or profile are configured correctly.

How do I tell whether the problem is software, the dongle, or the headset?

Use a controlled comparison: keep the headset and microphone unchanged, switch only the host or connection path, and record what changes.

Observed result Most useful next check
Microphone works on another host Correct the original host’s permissions, input selection, microphone monitoring, or drivers.
Audio works over Bluetooth but not through the dongle Verify dongle mode, direct USB detection, firmware, and re-pairing.
Neither microphone nor audio works on multiple hosts Inspect the headset, detachable microphone, USB-C port, dongle, and adapter for physical damage.
Only one ear fails on every connection Check balance, then treat the affected earcup or internal hardware as the likely fault.
Failure occurs only at long distance Reduce range and interference before replacing any component.

This method avoids replacing a headset for a Windows permission problem or replacing a microphone when the console is still using its controller input.

Should I replace a detachable part or the complete headset?

The guide documents four removable or replaceable items: the detachable ClearCast microphone, its windscreen, the USB-C charging cable, and the USB-C-to-A adapter. Replace a single part only when cross-device testing and physical inspection point to that part.

When a microphone replacement is reasonable

A replacement microphone makes sense when the headset works for listening, the mute control and host permissions are correct, and the detachable microphone fails on more than one host. Make sure the new microphone is fully seated before judging it defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to replace a cable or adapter

If the headset charges only when the USB-C plug is held at an angle, or the dongle works in USB-C but not through the adapter, test a known-good compatible cable or adapter. A cable issue should not be used to explain a microphone that also fails over Bluetooth.

When the complete headset may be involved

Consider complete-headset service or replacement when the same audio, microphone, power, or connection failure follows the headset across multiple hosts and connection methods. No repair-success rate or cost comparison is established in the available documentation, so choose based on warranty status, the condition of the dongle, and whether a detachable part is the only failed component.

What should I do after the basic fixes fail?

  1. Write down the host, connection path, dongle switch position, and whether the failure affects microphone, audio, power, or pairing.
  2. Repeat the test with the dongle directly connected and the headset within normal range.
  3. Test Bluetooth or a second host to determine whether the symptom follows the headset.
  4. Record the LED behavior, including slow, slow blue, or rapid blinking, and whether a connection chime is heard.
  5. Use the SteelSeries support article for the matching symptom—muffled sound, dongle detection, microphone failure, hardware reset, or pairing.
  6. If a physical component is implicated, photograph the connector or socket and check warranty or spare-part eligibility before opening the headset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave the dongle connected while I use Bluetooth?

The headset can switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth with the Power button, but the supplied documentation does not promise simultaneous audio from both paths. Treat them as separate modes and verify which one is active by the connection sound and LED behavior.

What does a rapidly blinking LED ring mean?

Rapid blinking is the pairing state during dongle re-pairing. Wait for the Connected sound and the return to a slow blink before testing game audio or the microphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the stated 10-meter wireless range guaranteed?

No. “Usually within 10m” is general guidance from an Argos FAQ, not a laboratory measurement of every Nova 3X setup. Walls, the dongle’s position, nearby radio sources, and USB interference can shorten usable range.

Do the battery colors show exact remaining play time?

No. Green, yellow, orange, and red identify percentage bands listed in the product guide. They do not convert directly to a fixed number of hours because the guide does not provide a runtime for each band.
