To fix the Instagram keeps logging out issue, first sign in through Instagram’s official website or another trusted device. If the browser works, update and reinstall the app, restart the phone, and test Wi‐Fi and cellular data. If Instagram logs you out everywhere, check account security, Account Status, and official recovery options before changing passwords repeatedly.

Repeated logouts do not automatically mean that an Instagram account was hacked. The problem may be a corrupted app session, an outdated app or operating system, an unstable connection, a security-triggered session invalidation, a restricted account, or a temporary Instagram-side problem. The browser comparison below separates those possibilities quickly.

Key takeaways

  • Instagram working in a browser while the app logs out usually points to a local app, device, network, or session problem.
  • Instagram logging you out on every device is more consistent with an account-security, account-status, credential, or Instagram-side issue.
  • Instagram’s official troubleshooting path includes updating the app and operating system, restarting the device, testing Wi‐Fi and mobile data, and reinstalling Instagram.
  • Unfamiliar login locations, changed contact details, unauthorized posts, or unexpected security emails justify securing the account before repeatedly attempting to log in.
  • Deleting Instagram normally does not delete published account content, but locally stored Instagram drafts may not survive app deletion.

How can you tell whether the problem is the app or the Instagram account?

The fastest diagnostic test is to open Instagram’s official website in a private or incognito browser window and sign in manually. If possible, test the same account on another trusted device as well. Do not rely on an old saved browser session, autofill entry, or an untrusted “Instagram support” website.

Instagram
  • Stories - Temporary pictures and videos that you can share to your friends and they disappear after 24 hours unless you save them to your Story Highlights.
  • Feed - The primary surface first seen when opening the Instagram app where you see photos and videos from the accounts you follow or that are recommended to you.
  • Reels - Short entertaining videos that you can create or watch and then share with friends.
  • Profile - A place to express your identity through photos, videos, and a bio.
  • Direct Messaging - Send and receive messages, videos, or pictures to one or more people.

What should you try first?

Use this sequence before making potentially disruptive account changes. Instagram’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends using current app and operating-system versions, restarting the device, testing another connection, and reinstalling Instagram.

  1. Test Instagram in a browser. Use a private window and enter the username, email address, or phone number manually.
  2. Update Instagram. Use the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store, not a modified APK or an unofficial download.
  3. Update the phone. Install available iOS, iPadOS, or Android updates.
  4. Restart the phone. Test Instagram again after both updates and the restart.
  5. Switch networks. Turn off Wi‐Fi and try cellular data, then repeat the test on Wi‐Fi.
  6. Disable network-altering tools temporarily. Turn off a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, ad blocker, or corporate or school network for the diagnostic test.
  7. Reinstall or reset Instagram. Follow the iPhone or Android instructions below.
  8. Investigate security or account restrictions. Do this if the logout continues across devices, or if suspicious activity appears.
  9. Report the technical problem. Use Instagram’s official reporting flow when the account works elsewhere but the app still fails.

Keep the phone’s date and time set automatically. Authentication can behave unpredictably when the device clock is substantially wrong. Avoid requesting login codes repeatedly while switching between networks; rapid code requests can make it unclear which code is current.

How do you fix Instagram keeps logging out on iPhone or iPad?

On iPhone or iPad, the official local-session fix is to delete Instagram and reinstall it rather than looking for an Android-style cache button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update Instagram in the App Store.
  2. Install any available iOS or iPadOS update.
  3. Restart the iPhone or iPad.
  4. Press and hold the Instagram icon.
  5. Tap Remove App, then choose to delete Instagram.
  6. Reinstall Instagram from the App Store.
  7. Sign in manually with the correct username, email address, or phone number and password.

Instagram says that photos and profile information are saved by Instagram when the app is deleted, but locally stored drafts may not be preserved. Save important drafts before deleting the app. Deleting Instagram also removes local login state, so confirm that you can access the correct password, recovery email, phone number, password-manager entry, or recovery codes first.

If Instagram works in Safari or another browser but fails after a clean reinstall, test cellular data, disable a VPN or content filter, verify automatic date and time, and check available device storage. If the same app failure remains, report it rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the app.

How do you fix Instagram keeps logging out on Android?

On Android, clear Instagram’s cache as a low-risk local test, then clear storage or reinstall only if the problem remains. Android menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.

  1. Update Instagram through Google Play.
  2. Install available Android system updates.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Open Settings → Apps → Instagram.
  5. Tap Storage or Storage & cache, depending on the phone.
  6. Tap Clear cache, then open Instagram and test it.
  7. If clearing the cache does not help, return to Instagram’s app settings and consider Clear storage or Clear data.
  8. As another escalation step, uninstall Instagram and reinstall it from Google Play.
Android action What it changes When to use it
Clear cache Removes temporary files without normally removing the complete local app state First Android reset step when the app behaves incorrectly.
Clear storage or data Removes local login state and app data; you will need to sign in again Escalation step after cache clearing fails and recovery access is confirmed.
Uninstall and reinstall Replaces the installed app and removes its local state When the installation may be corrupted or updates did not resolve the issue.

Clearing cache is not a universal fix. A server-side incident, account restriction, password change, or compromised account will not be repaired by clearing Android app files.

Why does Instagram keep logging you out after reinstalling?

If Instagram logs you out again after a clean reinstall, stop treating the problem as only a corrupted app session. Check whether Instagram is invalidating sessions for security, whether an unfamiliar person or app has access, whether the account is restricted, or whether Instagram is having a broader technical problem.

How do you check where your Instagram account is logged in?

Instagram’s newer documented route is Profile → Menu → Accounts Center → Password and security → Where you’re logged in. Select the Instagram account and review the devices and approximate locations listed. Instagram’s current session-management instructions describe this Accounts Center route.

Menu availability varies by app version, platform, account type, language, and region. If Accounts Center does not show the setting, try the alternate route Profile → Menu → Security → Login activity, which Instagram also documents through its login-activity and security guidance.

If a device or location is unfamiliar, choose This Wasn’t Me when Instagram offers that option, log out the suspicious session, and follow the security instructions. A familiar-looking location is not conclusive proof that a login is legitimate because location information can be approximate.

What should you do if an unfamiliar login appears?

An unfamiliar login combined with repeated logouts should be handled as a possible account compromise. Do not merely log out the unfamiliar device and continue using the old password.

  1. Secure the associated email account first. Change its password if it may also be exposed and enable email-account two-factor authentication where available.
  2. Change the Instagram password. Use a unique password that is not reused on another service.
  3. Check the Instagram contact details. Confirm that the account email address and phone number are still yours.
  4. Review linked accounts. Remove unrecognized accounts from Accounts Center.
  5. Remove suspicious third-party access. Revoke follower, analytics, reposting, automation, or other apps that you do not recognize or no longer need.
  6. Log out unfamiliar sessions. Review the device list again after changing the password.
  7. Enable two-factor authentication. Instagram supports SMS and third-party authentication apps; use recovery codes or the official recovery flow if two-factor authentication itself becomes inaccessible.

Instagram’s hacked-account guidance covers password changes, two-factor authentication, contact-detail checks, linked accounts, suspicious apps, login links, and identity-verification options.

Never give an Instagram password, login code, recovery code, or video-selfie instruction to someone who contacts you claiming to be Meta support. Do not install an “Instagram recovery” app, call an unofficial phone number, or pay an unaffiliated person promising guaranteed account recovery.

Should you change your Instagram password?

Change the Instagram password when an unfamiliar login appears, Instagram reports that the password changed, you cannot verify the current password, unauthorized activity appears, or the official security flow requests a reset. A password reset is not automatically the best first move when the account works in a browser and the problem began after an ordinary app update on only one phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a password change, Instagram may require a fresh sign-in on other devices because existing sessions can be invalidated. Enter the new password manually once rather than relying on an old autofill entry. Before deleting saved passwords, confirm that the correct recovery email, phone number, password-manager record, or recovery codes are available.

What if Instagram says the password is incorrect only on your phone?

If Instagram says the password is incorrect on one phone but the same credentials work in a private browser window or on another trusted device, the phone may be using an obsolete saved password or corrupted local login state. Enter the username and password manually, remove the obsolete saved account from Instagram’s login screen, and reinstall or reset the app if necessary.

If the password fails everywhere, use Instagram’s official recovery process instead of repeatedly guessing. Instagram’s login help directs users with login problems toward account-recovery and hacked-account processes.

How do you recover an Instagram account that will not stay logged in?

Use Instagram’s login-link and account-recovery flow when the account fails on every device, the password no longer works, the email or phone number changed, or security checks prevent a normal login.

  1. At the Instagram login screen, tap Forgot password?
  2. Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with the account.
  3. Request a login link and open it from a secure device.
  4. Complete any CAPTCHA, security-code, or identity checks Instagram presents.
  5. If the login link fails, request support using an email address that only you can access.
  6. Follow the instructions sent by Instagram.

Instagram may offer additional identity verification depending on the account and recovery flow. For an account containing photos of the account owner, Instagram may request a video selfie. For an account without photos of the account owner, Meta may instead request the original signup email address or phone number and the type of device used during signup. These options are not guaranteed to appear for every account.

If you no longer control the recovery email or phone number, secure that email or phone account first if possible, then use Instagram’s official hacked-account instructions. Do not use a paid third-party recovery service as a substitute for Instagram’s own process.

Can a restricted or disabled Instagram account cause login problems?

A restriction or disabled-account notice is an account-level issue, so reinstalling Instagram cannot remove the restriction. If you can access the account long enough to open settings, check Settings → Account Status.

Instagram’s Account Status information says that Account Status can show removed content, features the account can no longer use, and available review options. Read the specific notice, follow any review or appeal process shown, and do not assume that a logout by itself proves that the account was suspended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Business and creator accounts may display different support or review options from personal accounts. Follow the notice associated with the affected account rather than trying to bypass an account-level decision through repeated app reinstalls.

Could Instagram itself be down?

Instagram may have a temporary bug, broken feature, or broader service incident, but repeated logouts alone do not establish that Instagram is down. Compare the same account in a browser, another device, and another network. Check Instagram’s official communications and reputable outage reporting before repeatedly resetting credentials.

If many users are reporting the same failure and the account works in another environment, waiting for Instagram to restore service may be more appropriate than changing the password repeatedly. The research for this article did not establish a live outage, so no current outage is claimed here.

When should you stop troubleshooting and switch to recovery?

Stop repeating app resets and switch to account recovery or security work when Instagram logs you out on every device, an unfamiliar session appears, the email address or phone number changed, unauthorized posts or messages appear, Instagram sends an unexpected security notice, or the account shows a restriction or disabled notice.

For a local app problem, the practical stopping point is after updating, restarting, testing Wi‐Fi and cellular data, checking VPN or date-and-time settings, and reinstalling or resetting the app. If the app still fails but browser login works, submit a technical report. If browser login fails too, prioritize security and recovery instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Instagram keep logging me out but work in my browser?

Instagram working in a browser while the app logs out usually indicates a local app, device, network, or session problem rather than proof of a hacked account. Update Instagram and the operating system, restart the phone, test Wi‐Fi and cellular data, and reinstall the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does changing my Instagram password fix repeated logouts?

Changing the Instagram password can fix repeated logouts when an unfamiliar login, changed account details, unauthorized activity, or a password-change notice indicates a security problem. A password change is not necessarily useful when the account works in a browser and only one app installation is affected.

Will deleting Instagram delete my photos?

Deleting the Instagram app normally does not delete published photos or profile information associated with the Instagram account. Locally stored Instagram drafts may not be preserved, so save important drafts before deleting the app.

How do I see who is logged into my Instagram account?

Open Instagram, go to Profile, open the menu, choose Accounts Center, select Password and security, and tap Where you’re logged in. If that route is unavailable, some versions show Profile → Menu → Security → Login activity; menu labels vary by platform and account.

Is it safe to use an Instagram account-recovery service?

Unaffiliated Instagram account-recovery services are unsafe because they may request passwords, security codes, payment, or access to the email account. Use Instagram’s official login-link, hacked-account, identity-verification, and in-app reporting flows instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Test Instagram in a private browser first. A browser session that stays active points toward repairing the app or device; logouts across every device require account-security, Account Status, recovery, or outage checks. Update, restart, change networks, and reinstall before escalating—but treat unfamiliar logins or changed account details as a security event, not a cache problem.
