If Google Maps is taking you the wrong way, first check the start and destination, travel mode, and route options. If the blue dot is misplaced or jumping, fix your device’s location accuracy. If one particular road or turn still appears wrong, follow real-world signs and report the step to Google where that feature is available.
First, identify what is wrong
Stop somewhere safe before changing a route or phone setting. The fix depends on whether the problem is the route’s starting point, the route preferences, your current-location dot, or a particular road or turn in Maps.
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The route starts in the wrong place | Entered origin or current location | Check the origin; if it is your current location, inspect the blue dot and location settings. |
| The blue dot jumps, has a large circle around it, or points the wrong way | Device location accuracy or signal | Check location settings, connectivity, signal conditions, and compass calibration. |
| The blue dot is gray or missing | Maps cannot determine your current position | Check location services and follow the device’s location prompts. |
| The route uses a road you meant to avoid | Travel mode or route options | Review the selected mode, route preferences, and route details. |
| A specific turn, road, or access point seems incorrect | Possible directions or map-data issue | Check the route details, obey signs, and report the wrong step if the feature is available in your region. |
Check the route inputs and alternatives
Make sure the origin and destination are correct, and that the selected travel mode matches your trip—for example, driving rather than walking or cycling. If a place has multiple entrances, selecting a pin at the intended entrance may help avoid a misleading destination match.
Compare the highlighted route with the alternatives on the map and review their estimated travel times. On desktop, you can select another displayed route. For a driving route, Google also documents changing it by dragging a point on the route. See Google’s directions and route options for computer.

Review route preferences before setting off
Check the route options that matter for your trip, such as avoiding tolls or highways. On Android, Google also documents HOV preferences in supported contexts and estimated toll prices in certain cities. Toll estimates are not an authoritative price from the toll operator. Labels and available options can vary by device, location, and route; inspect the actual route rather than assuming a preference guarantees a particular road. Google’s Android directions guidance describes these controls and their limits.
Fix an inaccurate blue dot on Android
If the route begins from the wrong place, or the blue dot jumps, points in the wrong direction, or has a broad pale-blue circle around it, troubleshoot location accuracy rather than reporting a road error. Google says the circle represents uncertainty about the dot’s position. A gray or missing dot means Maps cannot find your current position and may show the last place you visited. Buildings and parking structures can interfere with location reception.

Google’s Android location-accuracy guidance explains the blue dot and these troubleshooting steps.
Check location access in desktop Maps
If computer-based Maps cannot locate you or shows an inaccurate current position, allow location access for Maps in your browser. Check your internet connection and browser permissions, then reload the page. If location remains unavailable or wrong, Google recommends restarting the computer. These steps address current-location display, not incorrect road data. See Google’s computer location-accuracy guidance.

Report a wrong turn or road
If the location dot is correct, the endpoints and travel mode are right, and a particular direction still appears wrong, Google documents a reporting flow on desktop for non-transit directions. The feature is available only in some countries or regions.
- Enter the same starting point and destination that produced the problem.
- Select the affected route, then open Details.
- Select Send Product Feedback.
- Flag the incorrect step, choose the problem type, and submit.
Google describes routing and traffic information as drawing on anonymized phone-location data when collection is enabled, licensed partner data, and map updates from users and partners. You can also send general Maps feedback with a description of what you were doing, what happened, and what you expected; a screenshot can be included. Google says feedback may be shared with the product team and used in future updates, but it is unlikely to be acted on immediately. See Google’s wrong-directions reporting instructions and Google’s Maps feedback guidance.
