Google Calendar reminder problems usually come from one of five layers: the individual event, the calendar’s default notifications, browser permission, operating-system delivery controls, or mobile synchronization. Start with the affected event, then move outward through those layers. This order finds most causes without changing settings that were working for other calendars or accounts.
A reminder can be late because a browser or operating system delayed it, appear twice because two notification rows or two calendar apps are active, or disappear because the event has no notification, the browser is blocked, the app is muted, or the phone has not synced the right account. The steps below separate those cases.
First identify which notification layer is failing
Google Calendar has separate controls at several levels. An event can have its own notification list; that list can differ from the calendar defaults. The browser must be allowed to deliver web notifications, and desktop alerts require Google Calendar to remain open in the browser. Windows or macOS can then hide or suppress the alert. On a phone, the signed-in account, selected calendar, app permissions, and synchronization determine what appears.

Use the platform that is actually failing. A calendar default change will not unblock a browser permission, and reinstalling an app will not remove a second notification source.

Fix one affected event first
Event-level settings are the most specific control and can add, remove, or override the calendar’s defaults. Inspect one event that arrived late, repeated, or did not notify before making broad changes.
Check and correct the event’s notification list
- Open Google Calendar and select the event that had the problem.
- Choose the option to edit the event.
- Find the notification or reminder section. Confirm that at least one notification exists and that its lead time is the one you want.
- If the reminder appeared more than once, look for multiple notification rows. Remove every extra row, leaving only the alert types and lead times you intentionally need.
- Save the event, then use the same event later to verify the result rather than changing every calendar at once.
Google Calendar supports more than one notification type on an event. For example, an event can intentionally have a pop-up and an email, but two rows with the same delivery type and lead time will look like a duplicate reminder. Removing an unwanted row changes this event only; it does not repair defaults for future events.
Check recurring events carefully
For a recurring event, confirm whether you are editing one occurrence or the whole series. A notification added to a single occurrence can make that date behave differently from the rest of the series. If the series has accumulated extra rows, edit the series and remove the unwanted notification there, then inspect any individually modified occurrences.
Review the calendar’s default notifications
Calendar defaults control newly created events. They do not necessarily replace a customized event’s notification list, so review defaults only after checking the event itself.
Inspect Event notifications
- Open Google Calendar settings.
- Select the relevant calendar.
- Open the calendar’s Event notifications section.
- Confirm that the default notification type and lead time match what you expect for new timed events.
- Remove default rows that create an unwanted second alert, or add a row if new events are being created without reminders.
Inspect All-day event notifications separately
All-day events use their own All-day event notifications section. A timed-event default does not tell you what an all-day event will do. Check this section when reminders are missing or unexpectedly duplicated on birthdays, deadlines, holidays, or other events without a start time.

These settings apply per calendar. If you use several calendars, repeat the review for each one that can contain the affected event. A change to one calendar does not establish a universal default for all calendars in the account.
Why Google Calendar desktop reminders are late or missing
Desktop delivery has two independent requirements: Google Calendar must be configured to show desktop notifications, and the browser must be allowed to send them. Even with both enabled, the operating system can defer or hide the alert.
Enable desktop notifications in Google Calendar
- In Google Calendar, open General settings.
- Open Notification settings.
- Enable Desktop notifications.
- If the browser displays a permission prompt, allow notifications for
calendar.google.com. - Keep Google Calendar open in the browser. Google’s desktop notification behavior requires the Calendar page to remain open; closing the tab or browser removes that delivery path.
Browser menu names vary by browser version. If permission was previously denied, open the browser’s current site-notification settings, find calendar.google.com, and change it to allow notifications. A browser-level block can override the Calendar setting, so turning on Desktop notifications alone is not sufficient.
Do not confuse a late alert with a missing alert
If an alert appears only after you leave a full-screen video, stop sharing your screen, or exit a focus mode, the reminder may have been generated but hidden. If it never appears while Calendar is open, check the browser permission and operating-system controls before changing the event.
Check operating-system notification delivery
The browser or Calendar app can be permitted while the operating system still suppresses its notifications. Check the device where the alert is expected to appear.

Windows
- Confirm that the browser you use for Google Calendar is allowed to show notifications in Windows notification settings.
- Check Focus Assist and any other focus or do-not-disturb mode. These can defer or hide alerts until the mode ends.
- Exit full-screen applications and temporarily stop screen sharing or gaming overlays while testing. Windows can suppress or hide notifications in those states.
- After changing a setting, leave Calendar open and create a short test event so you can distinguish a delivery change from an event-specific mistake.
macOS
- In macOS notification settings, make sure the browser used for Calendar is allowed to deliver alerts.
- Inspect Notification Center and any Focus mode that could silence or summarize notifications.
- Check display-mirroring or screen-sharing settings if alerts are being sent to another display or hidden during a presentation.
- Keep the Calendar tab open while testing desktop delivery.
Operating-system labels can change between releases. Look for the current notification, focus, full-screen, and display-mirroring controls rather than relying on an older menu path.

Why Google Calendar reminders do not arrive on a phone
Mobile notification preferences are personal to the signed-in account. A change made on a phone can sync with that account’s computer notifications, and a change made on another device can affect what you see on the phone. Check the account and calendar before assuming the app is broken.
Android: check each calendar and the app permission
- Open the Google Calendar app.
- Open Calendar settings and select each calendar that should produce reminders.
- Verify that the calendar has notifications enabled and that the lead time is appropriate. Add a notification if the calendar has none.
- Open Android’s app notification controls and make sure notifications for the Calendar app are allowed. Android can block the app even when a calendar’s own notification row is present.
- If several Google accounts are signed in, repeat the check for the account that owns or displays the event.
Calendar-level settings and Android’s app-level permission are separate. Both must allow alerts. Changes are personal to the account, so another account on the same phone can still behave differently.
iPhone or iPad: check account-specific settings
- Open Google Calendar and select the account that contains the affected calendar.
- Review notification settings for each relevant calendar and event type.
- In the device’s notification settings, allow Google Calendar to deliver alerts.
- Check any Focus or notification-summary feature that could defer the alert.
- Repeat the review for every account and calendar that can create or display the event.
Google’s guidance treats notification settings on iPhone and iPad as personal to the account and synchronized with computer notifications. A change made on one device can therefore explain a difference observed on another.
Stop duplicate Google Calendar notifications
Two alerts usually mean two active notification sources, not an unexplained Calendar delay. Work through the sources in this order.

Remove extra rows on the event
Open the affected event, edit it, and count the notification rows. Remove duplicate rows or notification types you do not need, then save. If the event belongs to a series, check both the series and any individually edited occurrence.
Check calendar defaults for future events
Open the calendar’s Event notifications and All-day event notifications. Remove a default row only if it is generating an alert you do not want on newly created events. Existing customized events may keep their own rows, so inspect those events separately.
Look for a second calendar app
Another calendar application connected to the same Google account can send the same reminder. If two apps are configured to notify, disable notifications in one of them or keep only one app responsible for reminders. This is especially important on phones that include a manufacturer calendar app alongside Google Calendar.
Do not disable every notification source before identifying the owner of the duplicate. Keeping one deliberate source makes later troubleshooting easier and avoids losing all reminders.
Fix events that are missing or stale on mobile
If an event is absent from the phone, or an update made on the computer has not appeared, treat it as a synchronization or account-selection problem before changing notification timing.

- On the phone, identify the signed-in Google account currently shown in Calendar.
- Confirm that the event belongs to that account and to a calendar enabled for display and synchronization.
- Check whether other events from the same calendar appear. If none do, the wrong account or a disabled calendar is more likely than an individual reminder setting.
- Verify that calendar synchronization is enabled for the device and account.
- Refresh or reopen the app, then compare the event on the computer and phone.
- If app events still do not show, use Google’s calendar synchronization troubleshooting guidance for the device and account.
When synchronization is working, events synced on a mobile device also appear when you use Google Calendar on a computer. A missing event means the notification layer has not yet received the event data; changing its lead time cannot fix that gap.
Use the symptom to choose the next fix
Reminders are consistently late on desktop
- Check the event’s lead time and notification rows.
- Confirm the calendar default if the problem affects newly created events.
- Ensure Desktop notifications are enabled in General notification settings.
- Allow
calendar.google.comin the browser. - Keep Calendar open and test outside full-screen, screen-sharing, gaming, or Focus Assist states.
There is no published Google guarantee for a fixed delivery latency. The practical goal is to remove each blocking layer rather than expect a precise number of seconds.
Reminders repeat twice for one event
- Count notification rows on the event.
- Check whether the event is also covered by a second calendar app.
- Review calendar defaults if the duplication occurs on newly created events.
- Leave one intentional notification source and test a new event.
No reminders arrive anywhere
- Inspect the event and calendar settings.
- On desktop, enable Calendar desktop notifications and browser permission.
- On mobile, allow the Calendar app in the operating system and check each account.
- Verify that the event and calendar are syncing to the device.
Only one calendar or account fails
Open that calendar’s own notification sections and confirm that the event is owned by the account you are checking. Notification settings are personal, and a setting changed for one account does not automatically represent another account signed in on the same device.

Make one controlled test instead of changing many settings at once. Create a temporary event on the affected calendar with a notification lead time you can observe soon, keep the relevant desktop tab or mobile app available, and wait for the expected alert. If it works, restore or delete the test event and move to the next calendar only if needed. If it fails, continue to the next layer: event, calendar, browser or app, operating system, then synchronization.
