Ghosting, shimmering, and blur usually improve when you give DLSS or FSR more source detail, remove extra sharpening, and test frame generation separately. Start with the same scene and camera move, switch from Performance toward Quality or Native AA, turn sharpening down, and disable frame generation for one comparison. If trails or flicker remain after supported game and runtime updates, the underlying problem is often the game’s integration—especially motion vectors, jitter, mip-map bias, depth, exposure, or post-processing order—rather than a setting you can repair.

This guide separates reconstruction artifacts from display problems and gives a repeatable test sequence for players. It also explains the renderer-side checks developers must make when the normal fixes do not work.

Why do DLSS and FSR produce ghosting, shimmering, or blur?

DLSS and FSR reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render and data from previous frames. That temporal process can only be as good as the current frame, motion information, jitter, depth, exposure, and history decisions supplied by the game. A mode that renders fewer source pixels leaves less detail for reconstruction, while incorrect motion data can make old pixels stick to a moving object or reject the wrong history.

The visual symptom points toward a different test. Trails behind a character suggest motion-vector or history problems; wires and foliage that sparkle suggest jitter, anti-aliasing, or excessive sharpening; an image that is soft everywhere suggests an aggressive quality mode, missing mip-map bias, native-resolution mismatch, or stacked image processing. Frame generation does not repair these defects: it can carry an existing upscale artifact into interpolated frames.

How do I capture a useful baseline before changing settings?

Make one controlled comparison before changing several options at once. This prevents a display setting, sharpening filter, or camera change from being mistaken for an upscaler fix.

  1. Choose a repeatable scene containing the problem: a moving character or vehicle for trails, foliage or cables for shimmer, and a detailed static surface for blur.
  2. Keep the output resolution, graphics preset, field of view, camera path, and scene time the same for every test. Record the game version, GPU, driver, upscaler mode, sharpening value, and frame-generation state.
  3. Temporarily disable film grain, depth of field, and motion blur. These effects can hide or imitate reconstruction artifacts, making a before-and-after comparison unreliable.
  4. Capture a short clip as well as a still image. Ghosting and temporal shimmer often appear only while the camera or object moves.
  5. Change one variable at a time and return to the baseline after each test. A setting that looks better in a different scene is not a confirmed fix.

Which DLSS or FSR quality mode should I use to reduce artifacts?

Move toward Quality first, then compare Native AA if the game offers it. Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Performance reduce the source render resolution progressively, so temporal reconstruction receives less original detail and has less reliable information for fine edges and motion.

Mode How to use it in diagnosis What the comparison tells you
Native AA Use as a reference when available, with upscaling disabled but the game’s native anti-aliasing active. If the artifact disappears, the reconstruction path is implicated; GPU load will usually be higher than with an upscaler.
Quality Make this the first upscaling comparison. More source detail gives the temporal reconstruction more information than lower-quality modes.
Balanced Compare after Quality, keeping every other setting unchanged. A change here shows how much the lower source resolution contributes to the softness or instability.
Performance Use only when the frame-rate gain is necessary, then inspect motion and fine detail closely. Reduced source detail can make blur, shimmer, and unstable edges more visible.
Ultra Performance Test only when the game and hardware require it; it is the most demanding case for reconstruction quality. Severe softness or temporal errors at this mode may be an expected trade-off rather than a fixable bug.

AMD’s FSR documentation describes Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance, and optional Ultra Performance as separate choices. DLSS games use their own exposed labels, but the diagnostic principle is the same: compare a higher-quality reconstruction or native anti-aliasing against the current mode at the same output resolution. Do not judge only by the instantaneous frame rate; inspect moving-object stability, distant geometry, and fine lines.

How do I stop sharpening from making shimmer and halos worse?

Set the game’s sharpening slider low or off, then repeat the baseline movement. Sharpening increases edge contrast; it cannot recreate missing motion data or source detail. High sharpening can turn a mild reconstruction error into bright halos, crawling foliage, or noisy wire edges.

  1. Set the in-game sharpening value to zero, Off, or the lowest available level.
  2. Disable any separate driver-level image-scaling or sharpening feature while testing. Running both a game sharpening pass and a driver pass makes the result difficult to attribute.
  3. Compare Quality or Native AA with the same sharpening value. Only after the reconstruction is stable should you add a small amount of sharpening for personal preference.

AMD describes sharpening as an optional pass and recommends exposing a user control. NVIDIA separately documents driver-level Image Scaling and sharpening controls. Those controls are useful for a final presentation adjustment, not for repairing incorrect temporal inputs.

Should I disable frame generation when diagnosing ghosting?

Yes. Turn frame generation off for at least one controlled test while leaving the upscaler enabled. Upscaling and frame generation are separate components, and an interpolated frame can expose or amplify an artifact that already exists in the reconstructed frames.

  1. Keep DLSS or FSR on at the chosen quality mode.
  2. Disable frame generation in the game’s graphics settings.
  3. Repeat the same camera movement and compare trails, foliage, and fine geometry.
  4. If the defect remains in the non-generated frames, investigate upscaler integration, quality mode, sharpening, and motion data.
  5. If the base frames look clean but generated frames show trails or breakup, report the issue as a frame-generation or motion-vector integration problem and keep frame generation off until the game is patched.

AMD’s FSR 3 integration guidance specifically warns that a sub-optimal upscale implementation carries its artifacts into interpolated frames. A higher generated-frame counter therefore does not prove that the underlying image is clean.

Can an update fix DLSS or FSR ghosting?

Sometimes. Apply the game’s official patch and use the supported DLSS or FSR runtime update path provided by the game or platform. Do not replace a game’s files with an unofficial runtime unless the developer explicitly supports that procedure; compatibility and available features depend on the game, driver, and GPU.

NVIDIA release notes dated January 30, 2025 described the latest DLSS Super Resolution model at that time, Transformer Preset K, as intended to improve temporal stability, reduce ghosting, and enhance motion detail. That statement is an intended improvement, not a guarantee for every title: a game must expose and correctly integrate the model, and its driver and hardware must support the available path.

After updating, repeat the same baseline capture. If only one title still shows trails while other games are clean, the evidence points more strongly to that title’s integration or content than to a universal defect in DLSS or FSR.

Could VSync, VRR, or the display be causing the blur?

Display-side problems can change perceived blur, tearing, or scanline-like breakup, but they do not repair incorrect temporal inputs. Check them separately so a synchronization issue is not mislabeled as DLSS or FSR ghosting.

  • Set the operating system and game to the display’s native resolution. Scaling to a non-native mode can soften the whole image before reconstruction artifacts are assessed.
  • Test the game’s VSync setting and your variable-refresh-rate configuration. VSync controls when completed frames are presented; a mismatch can produce tearing or uneven presentation that resembles breakup during motion.
  • Verify the cable, input mode, and refresh-rate selection if the defect looks like horizontal bands, scanlines, or signal instability rather than trails attached to objects.
  • Keep texture filtering and anti-aliasing settings consistent. AMD’s Radeon guidance notes that these settings alter softness and edge quality, so changing them between tests invalidates a direct comparison.

Once the display path is stable, return to the same scene with the upscaler and frame-generation variables isolated.

What renderer errors cause persistent ghosting and shimmer?

When normal settings do not help, the game may be supplying the reconstruction algorithm with incorrect or incomplete data. These are implementation issues rather than universal end-user toggles.

Incorrect motion vectors

Motion vectors tell the temporal algorithm where samples moved between frames. NVIDIA’s integration checklist states that incorrect motion vectors can lead to increased ghosting and other image-quality problems. AMD’s FSR 3 guidance likewise identifies incorrect or missing motion vectors as a cause of ghosting.

Vectors must cover the camera and every relevant moving element: skinned or deformable characters, vehicles, foliage, particles, transparencies, and other alpha-tested geometry. A character may have correct vectors while a weapon, hair strand, or particle system leaves a trail because that object was omitted from the motion pass.

Missing or incorrect jitter

Temporal reconstruction normally shifts the sample pattern between frames. NVIDIA documents that missing or incorrect jitter can cause poor anti-aliasing and increased flickering. Verify the jitter sequence, scale, and units against the SDK contract, and ensure the same jitter is reflected in the motion-vector calculations.

Missing mip-map bias

Upscaling changes the relationship between the internal render resolution and texture sampling. NVIDIA’s checklist links missing mip-map bias to textures that appear blurry, smudgy, or low resolution. A quality-mode change may alter the symptom, but it cannot compensate for a sampler that selects inappropriate mip levels.

Incorrect post-processing order

DLSS and FSR must run at the position expected by their integration contracts, close to the beginning of post-processing where required. Applying effects that should occur after reconstruction before it, or feeding already-processed data into the upscale pass, can create unstable edges and inconsistent history.

FSR 3 integration also requires correct post-process placement, high-quality upscaling, and reactive or transparency/composition masks where applicable. These masks tell the algorithm which pixels need different history treatment, especially around alpha-tested or composited content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depth, exposure, and history discontinuities

Depth and exposure must be supplied in the format and timing expected by the SDK. NVIDIA notes that improper exposure can increase ghosting, flickering, and other image-quality issues. Temporal history should be reset on camera cuts, teleports, major disocclusions, and other discontinuities; retaining an old history through a cut can produce a visible trail or flash.

What should I test for each visible symptom?

Visible symptom First controlled test Likely area to investigate How to interpret the result
Trails behind moving characters or vehicles Disable frame generation, then compare Quality or Native AA with sharpening off. Motion vectors, history rejection, or frame-generation integration. If trails remain in base frames, inspect motion data and history; if they appear only in generated frames, the interpolation path is implicated.
Foliage, wires, fences, or distant geometry shimmer Raise the quality mode, test Native AA, verify jitter, and lower sharpening. Jitter, anti-aliasing, source detail, or edge-contrast processing. A large improvement at higher quality indicates a source-detail or temporal-stability limitation; persistent flicker points toward jitter or integration.
Everything looks soft or smeared Check the quality mode, native output resolution, texture filtering, mip-map bias, and stacked sharpening or scaling. Low source resolution, incorrect mip selection, non-native display scaling, or conflicting filters. If textures remain low resolution at native output and a higher-quality mode does not help, the renderer should be checked for mip-bias and sampling errors.
Only generated frames look wrong Leave upscaling enabled but turn frame generation off. Frame-generation motion data or propagation of an upscale artifact. Clean base frames with defective generated frames separate interpolation from reconstruction.
Tearing or scanline-like breakup Test VSync, VRR, refresh rate, cable, and signal stability. Display presentation rather than temporal reconstruction. Object-attached trails implicate reconstruction; screen-wide breakup implicates synchronization or the signal path.

How should I compare DLSS and FSR modes fairly?

Use a short test log rather than relying on memory. Compare the options on the dimensions that matter to your game and display:

  • Static-scene clarity: pause on text, texture detail, and thin geometry to separate softness from temporal instability.
  • GPU load and frame rate: note the performance change, but do not treat a higher counter as proof of better image quality.
  • Latency and presentation: record whether frame generation is enabled and whether VSync or VRR behavior changes.

For every comparison, record the exact game version, driver, GPU, output resolution, quality mode, sharpening value, and frame-generation state. A result without those details cannot be reproduced reliably, especially after a game or runtime update.

What can developers do when player settings do not fix the problem?

Use the vendor integration checklist as a renderer audit. Confirm that motion-vector coverage includes camera motion, skinned and deformable meshes, foliage, particles, transparencies, and other alpha-tested elements. Check vector units, jitter scale, depth conventions, exposure handling, mip-map bias, and post-process ordering against the SDK contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate history behavior around camera cuts, teleports, disocclusions, resolution changes, and exposure transitions. Ensure reactive and transparency/composition masks are generated where the FSR 3 integration requires them. Test the upscale component with frame generation disabled first; only after base-frame quality is stable should interpolation be evaluated.

Capture debug views for motion vectors, depth, jitter, exposure, reactive masks, and mip selection. A vector field that is zero on a moving mesh, flips sign, uses the wrong unit scale, or excludes an alpha-tested object can explain a trail that no player slider can remove.

When is a DLSS or FSR artifact a game bug?

It is reasonable to report an integration defect when the issue survives a controlled Quality or Native AA comparison, sharpening is off, frame generation is disabled for the base test, the display runs at native resolution, and the game and supported runtime are current. Include a repeatable scene, a short clip, your game version, driver, GPU, output resolution, upscaler mode, sharpening value, and frame-generation state.

Describe the artifact precisely: for example, a trail attached to a moving character, flicker on a static wire during a camera pan, or low-resolution textures despite native output. This gives the developer enough information to inspect vectors, jitter, masks, mip bias, exposure, and history rather than treating every complaint as generic “blur.”

Frequently asked questions

Can monitor response time be mistaken for DLSS or FSR ghosting?

Yes. A slow pixel response or an overdriven display can leave a panel trail that follows contrast transitions across the entire image, while reconstruction ghosting usually clings to particular objects or edges. Compare a native-rendered reference and a recorded clip; if the trail changes with the monitor’s response-time setting or appears in every game, investigate the display separately.

Is Native AA always better than DLSS or FSR?

Native AA is a useful quality reference, not an automatic winner. It generally preserves more source detail at the cost of additional GPU work, while a well-integrated upscaler can deliver similar stability at a lower render cost. Use it to identify whether reconstruction contributes to a specific artifact, then choose the mode that meets your image-quality and performance requirements.

Why does a screenshot look clean while movement looks broken?

A screenshot captures one reconstructed frame and may miss history errors that appear only as samples accumulate across motion. Record a video while panning or moving an affected object, and compare the same path after changing one setting. Temporal defects are often invisible in a paused image.

Should I install a newer DLSS or FSR runtime manually?

Use the game’s official update mechanism or another path explicitly supported by the developer. Runtime availability and compatibility vary by title, driver, and GPU, and an unsupported replacement can introduce loading failures or mismatched features. If an official update does not change the controlled result, provide the reproducible evidence to the game developer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can sharpening restore detail lost in Ultra Performance mode?

No. Sharpening can increase local contrast and make edges appear crisper, but it cannot recreate texture samples or motion information that were never rendered. If the image is fundamentally soft, compare a higher-quality mode or native rendering before adding any sharpening.
