Fix AI-video artifacts by diagnosing the failure first: flicker is usually a frame-to-frame brightness, texture, or edge instability, while morphing and identity drift mean the model has changed an object’s geometry or appearance. Deflicker and temporal smoothing can calm stable subjects that pulse, but they cannot rebuild a face, hand, product, or prop that has changed shape. The most reliable workflow is to start with a sharp reference image, generate one short shot with one physical action, describe motion positively and concretely, anchor identity with a reference or locked frame, and regenerate when geometry changes. Use localized editing for one bad element and exposure matching when generated footage meets live footage.
Why do AI-generated videos flicker or change objects?
Video models must keep a scene coherent across both space and time. Runway explains that a video model cannot denoise each frame in isolation; it must preserve relationships as objects move, the camera changes, and new frames are synthesized. Longer clips and complicated motion create more opportunities for those relationships to fail. Runway describes these incidents as failures of holding a scene together rather than failures of rendering a single frame.
OpenAI has similarly characterized object permanence as an emerging capability that is not reliable in every case. A model may spontaneously introduce an object, remove one, or produce an incorrect physical interaction even when individual frames look plausible. A five-second clip can therefore contain a convincing first frame and a visibly different product or face a moment later.
| What you see | Likely failure | Best first response |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness, color, grain, or edges pulse while the subject keeps its shape | Temporal flicker or texture instability | Try temporal smoothing or a deflicker pass, then inspect at the delivery frame rate |
| A face, hand, package, logo area, or prop changes shape | Geometry or identity drift | Regenerate with a cleaner reference, shorter clip, and simpler action |
| Wardrobe, style, location, or a secondary object gradually changes | Scene-state drift | Anchor the scene with a reference image or locked frame and reduce simultaneous actions |
| A generated shot pops when it joins camera footage | Temporal, exposure, or contrast mismatch at the seam | Match brightness and contrast and check the transition frame by frame |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: applying a strong deflicker filter to a clip in which the object itself has morphed. Smoothing may hide a pulse, but it cannot infer the missing geometry or restore the original identity.

How can I tell flicker from morphing before I edit?
Pause on the first clean frame and compare it with the same subject later in the shot. If outlines, proportions, and identifying details remain stable but luminance or texture oscillates, treat it as flicker. If the silhouette, anatomy, label, hairstyle, clothing, or surface construction changes, treat it as a generation failure.
Check brightness and texture
- Scrub at normal playback speed, then step through frames. A brightness pulse that reverses on the next frame is usually temporal instability.
- Look at flat areas such as a wall, sky, tabletop, or product panel. Fine grain that appears and disappears without a change in lighting is a texture-flicker clue.
- Inspect high-contrast edges. A one-pixel halo or crawling edge can be temporal noise even when the underlying object is intact.
Check geometry and identity
- Compare fixed landmarks: eye spacing, finger count, bottle shoulders, package corners, wheel locations, or a logo’s relative position.
- Watch for an object that changes material, color, clothing, or accessories. Those are identity or scene-state changes, not ordinary flicker.
- Check contact and physics. A hand that no longer meets a cup, or a foot that slides through the floor, indicates a structural failure.
Check the edit seam
If the artifact appears only where generated footage meets original footage, inspect the last generated frame and first captured frame side by side. A sudden exposure or contrast jump can look like flicker even when both shots are internally stable. Adobe Research describes these generated-to-original transitions as capable of “temporal coherency artifacts such as popping or jitter.”
How do I prevent flicker before generating another clip?
Prevention starts with the input image and the scope of the shot. Give the model fewer ambiguities to resolve, then ask for restrained, physically specific motion.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Start with a clean key image
Use a sharp, artifact-free image with the subject fully visible and identifying details unobstructed. Runway Academy warns that blurry hands or faces in an input image may be intensified during image-to-video conversion. Remove motion blur, dust clouds, compression damage, and visual cues that contradict the movement you request. A blurred hand in the reference can be interpreted as a hand already moving, even if your prompt asks for a still pose.
- Choose consistent lighting and a readable silhouette.
- Crop out unrelated objects that could be mistaken for part of the subject.
- Correct malformed fingers, faces, labels, or text before animation rather than expecting video generation to repair them.
2. Make one short scene
Treat each generation as one shot with one principal action. Runway’s Gen-4 guidance notes that short clips become unreliable when a prompt asks for several scene changes, actions, or style shifts at once. If a shot needs a new location, wardrobe change, transformation, and camera move, split it into separate clips and cut them deliberately.
When morphing appears, shorten the duration and reduce the action to its essential motion. A person turning their head slowly is easier to preserve than a person running, spinning, changing clothes, and picking up an object in the same generation.
3. Describe physical motion positively
Name the subject, its position, the action, and the camera movement separately. Runway recommends wording such as: “The subject on the left walks forward. The subject on the right remains still.” This gives the model a subject-to-action relationship instead of a vague instruction to “make it cinematic.”

A practical prompt pattern is:
The red insulated bottle at the center remains the same shape and color. It rotates slowly clockwise on the table. The camera makes a gentle push-in. Continuous, seamless shot; minimal subject motion.
Avoid relying on negative commands such as “do not move.” Runway says negative phrasing is unsupported and may behave unpredictably. State the desired behavior directly: “The background remains fixed,” or “The subject on the right remains still.”
4. Control camera movement
Use “continuous, seamless shot” when you do not want an implicit cut. For a product or portrait, “The locked-off camera remains perfectly still” removes one source of uncertainty. “Minimal subject motion only” is useful for a restrained shot. Stabilization can reduce residual camera movement after generation, but it cannot restore an object that has changed shape.
How do I stop an object or character from morphing?
Morphing requires a generation change when the object’s geometry or identity has changed. The highest-value fixes are a better reference, a shorter and simpler action, and a visual anchor that the model can carry through the shot.
Use image-to-video instead of rediscovering the object
For a product, prop, or face that must remain recognizable, begin with a clean key image and animate it. Text-to-video asks the model to invent the object repeatedly; an image reference supplies its proportions, materials, and distinctive details at the start.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep identifying details visible
Do not hide the face, product label, distinctive seam, or key accessory behind a fast hand movement if continuity matters. If the defining feature leaves the frame, the model has less evidence when it reappears. Compose the shot so the reference-defining details remain visible during the action.
Reduce motion complexity
Replace rapid transformations with one measurable action: turn, slide, lift, or step. Avoid combining a rapid camera orbit with a fast subject rotation when the object must remain exact. Generate a restrained take first, then create a separate shot for a more dramatic move.
Chain a completed frame
When extending a sequence, use the completed clip’s last frame as the next image input. Runway’s guidance recommends this handoff because the new shot begins from the same visual state rather than a separately interpreted description. Trim or overlap the clips at a moment with a stable pose to make the join easier to hide.

Regenerate when the failure is structural
A filter cannot reliably reconstruct a missing finger, a reshaped bottle, or a changed face. Save the cleanest frame, adjust one variable at a time, and generate a new short take. Changing the reference, action complexity, and camera direction simultaneously makes it difficult to learn which change fixed the problem.
How do I keep the same product, face, or wardrobe throughout a sequence?
Identity consistency comes from anchoring the scene state, not from repeating adjectives in a prompt. Establish one approved visual reference, keep its identifying details visible, and reuse a completed frame when the sequence continues.
For a product
- Use a front or three-quarter key image in which the complete silhouette and label area are readable.
- Describe a single physical action, such as “rotates slowly clockwise,” instead of “moves dynamically.”
- Keep lighting and camera direction stable until the product has survived a clean take.
For a face or character
- Choose a sharp reference with unobstructed facial features and consistent hair and clothing.
- Limit fast turns, extreme expressions, and occlusions during the first generation.
- Use a character reference or locked frame when starting another shot; Runway Gen-4 says visual references can maintain consistent characters and locations across scenes.
For wardrobe and locations
Keep the clothing and background state in the reference rather than describing a new style in every prompt. If a scene must change wardrobe or location, make that a deliberate cut or a separately generated shot. Asking one clip to preserve a character, change clothes, move rooms, and execute a complex action gives the model several competing states to maintain.
Which post-production fix should I use?
Choose the least destructive tool that matches the artifact. Finishing tools are appropriate for temporal instability, localized mistakes, or a seam; they are not substitutes for a new generation when the subject has changed identity.
| Symptom | Action | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Stable object with pulsing brightness or grain | Apply temporal smoothing or deflicker | Reduced pulses; inspect for softened detail or ghosting |
| One face, hand, prop, or label is wrong | Use targeted replacement or edit | The surrounding scene can remain intact, but the replacement may need several attempts |
| Several objects change shape | Regenerate with a cleaner reference and simpler action | Higher chance of preserving geometry than filtering the damaged clip |
| Generated shot pops against captured video | Normalize exposure and contrast and refine the transition | A smoother seam; it does not repair internal morphing |
Use deflicker for temporal instability
Run the pass on a duplicate of the original clip. Compare before and after at the final delivery frame rate, not only in a paused viewer. Watch hair, fine text, and thin edges for ghosting or loss of detail. If the subject remains stable and only luminance or texture pulses, this is the appropriate first intervention.
Use localized replacement for one bad element
Runway Edit Studio documents workflows for replacing objects or characters, backgrounds, and relighting. Aleph 2.0 describes replacing a specific element while keeping the surrounding scene consistent. These approaches are useful when one localized element is wrong but the camera, background, and timing are worth keeping. Mask the smallest practical region and check the boundary for a halo, lighting mismatch, or altered shadow.
Do not stack aggressive filters on a morph
Repeated smoothing can make a changing object look smeared while leaving the underlying identity error untouched. Once the silhouette or anatomy changes, return to the generation stage or replace only that element.

How do I fix a generated clip that pops against live footage?
Start at the join rather than grading the entire project. Generated footage may have a different exposure, contrast curve, sharpness, or noise pattern from the camera footage, and the change can read as a temporal pop.
- Mark the first frame of the captured shot and the last several frames of the generated shot.
- Compare average brightness and contrast on a neutral area such as a wall, road, or skin tone.
- Match exposure and contrast before adding a creative grade.
- Check motion direction, camera shake, and focal perspective. A tonal match cannot hide a discontinuous movement.
- Trim or overlap on a moment of lower motion, then review the transition at normal speed and frame by frame.
Adobe Premiere Pro Generative Extend is relevant when the problem is the length or timing of a generated-to-original join. Adobe Research’s work on these transitions specifically addresses brightness and contrast normalization because popping and jitter can arise even when each source segment looks acceptable alone.

Choose a tool by the control it provides, not by a generic promise of “better quality.” The useful axes are reference-image support, short-shot and frame-chaining control, camera control, localized editing, seam matching, and whether the tool is intended for generation or finishing.
| Workflow or tool | Best fit | Control to look for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runway Gen-4 | Reference-based generation of consistent characters, locations, and objects | Visual references, image-to-video, short clips, and frame chaining | Complex or long actions can still produce drift; simplify the shot when it fails |
| Runway Edit Studio | Localized object or character replacement, background changes, and relighting | Targeted edits that preserve the broader scene | Boundary, lighting, and shadow continuity still require inspection |
| Aleph 2.0 | Replacing a specific element while retaining surrounding scene context | Element-level editing | It is not a guaranteed repair for multiple simultaneous geometry failures |
| Premiere Pro Generative Extend | Extending or smoothing a generated-to-original transition | Timeline-aware finishing at the join | It does not restore an object that morphed inside the source clip |
In Runway’s cited Gen-4 material, reference-based world consistency is the strongest use case. That does not mean every prompt will preserve identity: the model’s own documentation recommends shorter clips and simpler actions when continuity breaks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a reliable repair workflow from bad clip to final export?
Use this sequence to avoid spending time on the wrong stage of the pipeline.
- Classify the artifact. Decide whether it is brightness or texture flicker, geometry or identity drift, a single localized error, or a generated-to-live seam.
- Save the best frame. Export or capture the cleanest frame before applying filters. It can become the next reference or locked frame.
- Fix the source if the shape changed. Correct blur or malformed details, shorten the action, and regenerate a single-scene shot.
- Anchor the next take. Use the clean key image, a character or object reference, or the prior clip’s last frame.
- Describe one action and the camera separately. Use positive, concrete wording and avoid unsupported negative commands.
- Apply finishing only after identity is stable. Deflicker a stable subject, or use targeted replacement for one localized element.
- Match a live-footage seam. Normalize exposure and contrast, then inspect the transition at delivery frame rate.
- Review at full resolution and normal speed. Look for ghosting, halos, softened text, edge crawl, and physics errors before delivery.
How common are these artifacts, and should I trust a clip that looks convincing?
Even short clips can fool a casual viewer while containing continuity errors. Runway reported that 1,043 participants judging five-second Gen-4.5 clips achieved 57.1% overall detection accuracy in 2026; about 9.5% were reliable detectors. The figure is a report of human detection performance for that test, not a guarantee of quality for every model, prompt, or resolution. It is a reminder to inspect critical details rather than judging a clip only by its first impression.
For commercial or identity-sensitive footage, freeze-frame checks are especially important around hands, faces, logos, text, contact shadows, and object boundaries. Those regions can fail while the overall motion still appears natural.

What should I check before delivery?
- Play the clip at its final frame rate and resolution.
- Step through the first and last seconds, where references and frame chaining are most vulnerable.
- Verify that the main subject keeps the same silhouette, color, wardrobe, and defining details.
- Read every visible label or on-screen word; generated text can change even when the object remains recognizable.
- Check hands, feet, contact points, reflections, and shadows for physical continuity.
- Inspect every edit seam for exposure, contrast, sharpness, noise, and motion jumps.
- Confirm that a deflicker pass has not introduced ghosting or erased fine detail.
What does the evidence say about AI-video consistency?
Runway’s explanation that a video model cannot denoise each frame in isolation captures the central technical issue: temporal coherence requires the model to preserve relationships over time, not merely produce attractive individual images. Its documentation also states that visual references help maintain consistent characters, locations, and objects, while its prompting guidance favors direct descriptions such as a subject on one side moving and another remaining still.
Those principles lead to a practical rule: reduce ambiguity before increasing complexity. A clean image, one short action, a controlled camera, and a reusable visual anchor give the model fewer opportunities to reinterpret the scene. Post-production is most effective after those conditions have produced stable geometry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove AI-video flicker without generating a new clip?
Often, yes, when the subject’s shape and identity stay stable. Duplicate the clip, apply temporal smoothing or deflicker, and check for ghosting at the final frame rate; regenerate if the object itself changes.
Why does my AI-generated text or logo keep changing?
Small text and logos are difficult for video models to preserve through motion and occlusion. Keep the marking large and visible in the reference, reduce movement, and consider compositing approved artwork afterward rather than relying on generated lettering.
Should I use a longer prompt to stop character drift?
Not necessarily. Long prompts that combine several actions or style changes can increase ambiguity. A short positive description naming the subject, its position, one action, and the camera usually gives the model a clearer continuity target.
Does video upscaling fix a face that changes between frames?
Upscaling can enlarge or sharpen existing pixels, but it does not reliably restore a changed identity or missing anatomy. Fix the geometry with a better reference, simpler motion, or a localized replacement before upscaling.
Why does the last frame of one AI shot not match the first frame of the next?
The two generations may have independently interpreted the same description. Use the completed first clip’s last frame as the next image input, and make the handoff during a stable pose so both shots share a visual anchor.
