Fix an AI-generated flaky test the same way you fix any nondeterministic test: reproduce it repeatedly, capture the conditions that change, isolate whether the test, application, or infrastructure is responsible, then remove that source of variability. Do not start by adding a longer timeout or a retry. Generated code can contain uncontrolled random values, shared state, race-prone synchronization, network assumptions, and assertions that are stricter than the product contract.

A 2024 ICSE study of 6,356 projects ran generated tests 200 times each and found flakiness at least as common as in developer-written tests. Randomness was a more frequent cause than networking or concurrency in that sample, and EvoSuite suppression mechanisms reduced flaky tests by 71.7%. The practical answer is deterministic inputs, isolated fixtures, condition-based waits, contract-level assertions, and a controlled policy for retries while the underlying fault is repaired.

Why do AI-generated tests pass sometimes and fail other times?

AI-generated tests are ordinary executable code, so they inherit every nondeterministic behavior in the test and the system under test. A model may produce a plausible test that happens to depend on a random value, a wall-clock timestamp, a database row left by another test, an asynchronous callback, a browser animation, or a service that is not ready when the next assertion runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flakiness means that the same test and revision can pass and fail without an intended code change. The failure may be intermittent, sporadic, or dependent on order, timing, worker assignment, seed, or environment. A passing rerun does not prove that the test or application is correct; it only proves that the race or uncontrolled input did not occur on that run.

The 2024 ICSE study by Martin Gruber, Muhammad Firhard Roslan, Owain Parry, Fabian Scharnböck, Phil McMinn, Gordon Fraser, and colleagues examined 6,356 projects, generated tests with EvoSuite and Pynguin, and executed each test 200 times. It reported that generated-test flakiness was at least as common as flakiness in developer-written tests. In the generated tests studied, randomness appeared more often as the cause than networking or concurrency. Applying EvoSuite flakiness-suppression mechanisms was associated with 71.7% fewer flaky tests. That result supports controlling inputs and execution conditions; it does not make every generated test safe to trust without review.

Use the failure itself as evidence. If the test fails only after another test, only with parallel workers, only on one browser version, or only when a particular seed is used, that pattern is more valuable than the generated code’s apparent readability.

How do I reproduce a flaky test before changing it?

Reproduce first. Editing a test before recording its failure pattern can erase the evidence needed to identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the exact test repeatedly. Start with the same commit, command, data, and environment. For a Python test, a simple shell loop can expose intermittent behavior:
    for i in $(seq 1 100); do pytest path/to/test_file.py::test_name -q || break; done

    Use your framework’s repetition or stress facility when available. Fuchsia guidance allows 100 to 1,000 local repetitions for tests known to be prone to flakes, but the useful count depends on how often the failure occurs.

  2. Vary one execution condition at a time. Repeat with a fixed random seed and then with different seeds; change test order; run serially and in parallel; compare a local run with the CI worker; and record whether the failure follows a browser, device, operating-system image, dependency, or database version.
  3. Preserve every failure artifact. Save the complete stack trace, test logs, screenshots or video for UI failures, timestamps, browser and device versions, dependency lockfile, worker name, CPU or memory limits, random seed, test order, and the generated prompt and code revision. pytest specifically recommends visual artifacts for UI failures because the final exception often hides the state that caused it.
  4. Record pass/fail sequences. A sequence such as pass, pass, fail, pass is different evidence from a failure that occurs only after a particular preceding test. Record the first failing iteration and whether rerunning the same isolated test immediately passes.
  5. Keep the original test unchanged. Copy it or create a minimal reproducer before applying a fix. This gives you a before-and-after comparison and prevents a seemingly successful edit from merely removing the assertion that detected the problem.

How can I tell whether the test, application, or infrastructure is at fault?

Reduce the failure to the smallest case, then move the same scenario down the testing stack. A high-level end-to-end failure can be caused by the test’s timing, the application’s behavior, a real dependency, or a worker that cannot provide the promised resources.

Observed pattern Most likely class Useful check
Failure disappears when the test runs alone Leaked state, cleanup failure, or ordering dependence Run the test after each suspected predecessor and inspect databases, files, environment variables, queues, and global objects.
Failure changes when workers or order change Parallel interference or an order-dependent fixture Run serially, then with a different worker count; identify shared resources and non-isolated identifiers.
Failure follows a seed or random value Uncontrolled randomness Log the seed and generated values; replay the failing seed and inject the generator from the test.
Failure occurs around a timeout or animation Time-based synchronization Capture timestamps and replace fixed delays with a wait for the required state.
Failure appears only with a real service Network, dependency, or environment behavior Run the same contract against a deterministic fake or stub, then test the real integration separately.
Failure is a one-unit difference or formatting mismatch Overly strict assertion Check the intended contract, numeric tolerance, locale, ordering guarantee, and serialization rules.
Failure follows resource pressure or a worker image Infrastructure instability Compare CPU, memory, disk, clock synchronization, container limits, device health, and dependency versions.

pytest lists uncontrolled state, test ordering, parallel execution, thread-safety problems, strict assertions, and timing as common sources. Google testing guidance distinguishes this nondeterministic behavior from a normal deterministic failure, while Microsoft guidance emphasizes deterministic data and monitoring suite health. If a smaller unit or component test can establish the same contract, use it to separate an application defect from an end-to-end synchronization problem.

How do I replace sleeps in an AI-written Selenium test?

Replace a fixed delay with a wait for the condition that the next action actually needs. Selenium’s documentation summarizes the rule as “Sleeping is not waiting.” A sleep assumes that every machine, browser, network, and build will complete within the same arbitrary interval; a condition-based wait observes the state that makes the next operation safe.

Wait for the required browser state

Choose the narrowest condition that expresses the contract: an element is present, visible, enabled or clickable; text is present; a spinner has disappeared; a URL or title has changed; or a background request has completed. In Python Selenium, an explicit wait can look like this:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
submit = wait.until(
    EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, 'submit'))
)
submit.click()
wait.until(
    EC.text_to_be_present_in_element((By.ID, 'status'), 'Complete')
)

The timeout is a maximum for the condition, not an instruction to pause for that duration. Keep the condition specific and capture the page state when it expires. Avoid combining implicit and explicit waits without understanding their interaction, because mixed polling behavior can make a failure’s timing difficult to interpret.

Do not respond to a flake by extending the timeout blindly

An AI agent may react to an intermittent failure by changing 5 seconds to 30 seconds. That can hide a race, make the suite slower, and still fail when the underlying event never occurs. First establish which state is missing; then choose a timeout based on a documented service-level expectation and report the timeout as a diagnostic failure.

Synchronize with application events when possible

If the application exposes a stable completion signal, wait for that signal rather than a visual side effect. A network-idle condition, job-status endpoint, DOM attribute, or test-only event can be more reliable than waiting for a fixed number of milliseconds. Keep such hooks scoped to testability and ensure they represent the same behavior a user depends on.

What is the Android alternative to arbitrary sleeps?

Android guidance warns that arbitrary sleeps make tests slow or flaky because devices and builds complete work at different speeds. Espresso idling resources let the framework know when asynchronous work is still active, and Jetpack Compose tests provide wait-until APIs for observable UI conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Espresso tests

Register an idling resource for the worker, repository, or request queue whose completion controls the UI. The test should proceed when that resource becomes idle, not after a guessed delay. Deregister it in teardown so one test cannot alter synchronization for the next.

Compose tests

Use a Compose wait-until operation against a semantic condition, such as text, visibility, or a state description. Give the condition a bounded timeout and include the observed tree or state in the failure output. A wait that never checks the condition is only a slower sleep.

Other asynchronous systems

For message queues, jobs, and event-driven services, poll a status with a bounded interval or subscribe to a completion event. Make the operation idempotent where possible, and give the test a correlation identifier so it cannot mistake another run’s completion for its own.

How do I make generated tests use deterministic inputs?

Make every variable that can affect the result explicit, injectable, and replayable. The test should be able to answer which clock, seed, data set, locale, feature flags, and dependency responses produced its result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inject clocks instead of reading wall-clock time

Production code should depend on a clock interface or provider that the test can replace with a fake clock. Advance that clock deliberately to test expiry, scheduling, and date boundaries. This prevents a test from failing at midnight, during daylight-saving transitions, or when a slow worker crosses a millisecond boundary.

Inject and log random seeds

Create the random-number generator outside the code under test, pass it in, and log the seed at test start. Replay the exact failing seed before changing the implementation. Avoid generating random identifiers inside assertions or using an unseeded global generator shared by parallel tests. When randomness is itself the behavior under test, assert properties or distributions appropriate to that behavior rather than one accidental sequence.

Control locale, timezone, and data boundaries

Set the locale and timezone explicitly for tests involving formatting, parsing, calendars, or currency. Use dates near boundaries intentionally and include the expected zone in failure output. Generate unique test data from a run-scoped identifier, but keep the generator deterministic when the test is intended to reproduce a scenario.

Separate fake and real dependencies

For a unit or component test, mock external services and return deterministic responses, including error cases. Test the real service in a separate integration or contract suite with its own availability and data policy. A single generated end-to-end test that depends on a live network call is difficult to diagnose because a product regression and a transient dependency failure look identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I isolate state so generated tests can run in any order?

Each test should create the state it needs, own the identifiers it creates, and remove or discard that state during teardown. Shared mutable globals, reused accounts, fixed filenames, and database rows with predictable names allow one test to change another test’s result.

Use independent fixtures

Build a fixture per test or per narrowly defined scope. Reset database tables, queues, caches, files, environment variables, and feature flags that the test changes. Verify cleanup even when an assertion fails; a teardown that runs only on the success path is a common source of order-dependent failures.

Make parallel execution safe

Use worker- or run-scoped namespaces for accounts, ports, files, and records. Do not assume that a database transaction automatically isolates external side effects such as emails, object storage, or queues. If two tests must use a shared resource, coordinate access explicitly or move that scenario to a serial integration suite.

Split tests at the layer that owns the contract

Use a unit test for pure business rules, a component test for interactions inside the process, an integration test for a real dependency boundary, and an end-to-end test for the user-visible path. pytest recommends splitting suites or rewriting at a lower level when a high-level test hides the cause of flakiness. Lower-level coverage is not a reason to remove the end-to-end contract; it is a way to make each failure explainable.

How should I fix brittle assertions without hiding real bugs?

First state the intended product behavior, then assert that behavior and no more. Do not weaken an assertion solely because the generated test fails.

  • Floating-point values: compare with an explicit absolute or relative tolerance justified by the calculation, and report the expected, actual, and tolerance values.
  • Unordered results: compare sets or sorted values only when the API contract does not promise order. If order is meaningful, preserve the ordered assertion and investigate the producer.
  • Timing: assert that an operation completes within a documented bound, not that it completes in an exact number of milliseconds.
  • Formatting: assert a stable semantic representation when whitespace, localized text, or generated identifiers are incidental. Keep a separate formatting test for the exact presentation contract.
  • Generated identifiers: validate type, uniqueness, or a documented pattern rather than a value selected at runtime.

An assertion that passes after removing the only meaningful check is not a fix. Keep a failure-producing test until you can explain why the original expectation was outside the contract or why the implementation violated it.

Should I retry, quarantine, or delete a flaky generated test?

A retry is a containment measure, not a repair. It can keep a large CI pipeline moving while an owner investigates, but it also lowers the visibility of a real regression and increases runtime.

Use a retry only with an owner and a deadline

Record the original failure even when a retry passes. Track the test’s retry count, first-pass rate, last failure, and assigned owner. Android guidance permits retry mechanisms for large tests while still requiring the flaky test to be fixed. pytest provides rerun and xfail-style mitigations, but a permanent quarantine turns an observed defect into invisible risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quarantine narrowly

Quarantine a test only when it is clearly identified, excluded from release-gating decisions deliberately, and monitored by a time-bounded ticket. Keep a small diagnostic job running it so quarantine does not become deletion by neglect. The ticket should state the suspected layer, reproduction command, artifacts, and exit condition.

Rewrite or delete when appropriate

Rewrite the generated implementation when the intended behavior is still untested and a deterministic design can express it. Replace it with a lower-level test when the end-to-end layer obscures the contract. Delete it when the behavior is already covered elsewhere and the generated test adds only noise. Microsoft guidance favors fixing or removing unreliable tests rather than allowing an untrusted suite to accumulate.

How should I compare two possible fixes?

Choose the change that removes the source of nondeterminism while preserving the behavior the test is meant to protect. Compare alternatives using the same criteria rather than choosing the one that makes the next CI run green.

Criterion Question to ask Warning sign
Determinism Will the same input and revision produce the same result? The fix depends on an unlogged seed, current time, or an uncontrolled service.
Isolation Can the test run before, after, or alongside other tests? It reuses a global account, fixed file, port, queue, or database row.
Synchronization Does it wait for a condition or event? It adds a longer sleep or a second retry without observing state.
Diagnostic value Will the next failure explain what changed? Logs omit seed, order, environment, timing, or screenshots.
Runtime cost Does the change reduce unnecessary waiting and repeated work? A broad timeout or whole-suite retry masks a local issue.
Contract fidelity Does it test intended behavior rather than an incidental implementation detail? The assertion is weakened until almost any output passes.

What is a practical CI workflow for AI-generated tests?

Use a separate policy for discovery and gating. Discovery runs are allowed to stress a test and gather evidence; release-gating runs must have a known, explainable result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pin the execution context. Record the commit, generated-code revision, prompt version, dependency lockfile, browser or device image, locale, timezone, and feature flags.
  2. Run a focused stress job. Repeat newly generated tests and tests that have recently failed. Vary seeds and order deliberately, but keep each run’s parameters in the artifact.
  3. Fail with context. Attach logs, screenshots or video for UI tests, stack traces, timestamps, and the smallest reproducer. A failure without its environment is expensive to reproduce.
  4. Classify before assigning. Label the issue as test logic, application behavior, dependency, synchronization, state isolation, assertion, or infrastructure. Route it to the owner of that layer.
  5. Apply the smallest deterministic fix. Prefer injected clocks and seeds, independent fixtures, condition-based waits, and contract-level assertions. Do not combine several unrelated changes in one repair.
  6. Prove the repair. Repeat the original failing seed and order, run the test alone and in the full suite, then exercise the relevant parallel configuration. Keep the original reproduction command in the change record.
  7. Monitor after merging. Track first-pass rate, retry rate, duration, failure clusters by environment, and the age of quarantined tests. A test that becomes quiet after a retry is still a test whose health needs observation.

What should I do when an AI-generated test keeps changing after regeneration?

Freeze the generated code and its prompt before asking for another version. Regeneration can produce a different implementation and remove the symptom without addressing the same contract, making it impossible to compare results. Give the model the failing seed, state transition, expected behavior, and synchronization boundary, then review the resulting diff as you would any human-written code.

Require the regenerated test to expose clocks, random generators, external clients, and fixtures as dependencies where the framework permits. Reject a patch that adds sleeps, broad retries, or weaker assertions without an explanation tied to the product contract.

Frequently asked questions

Is a test flaky if it fails only on CI?

Yes. A CI-only failure is still nondeterministic from the developer’s perspective if the same revision produces different outcomes across workers or runs. Treat the CI image, resource limits, scheduler, and dependency cache as part of the test input and compare them with a controlled local or dedicated runner.

How many flaky-test metrics should a team track?

Start with first-pass pass rate, retry rate, median and high-percentile duration, failure frequency by environment, and time spent quarantined. Add a link from each failure to its artifacts and owner; a single aggregate “green pipeline” percentage hides which tests consume retries and which failures are increasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a better prompt alone make generated tests reliable?

A prompt can request explicit fixtures, injected time, seeded randomness, and condition-based waits, but it cannot guarantee that the generated code matches the application’s actual synchronization or isolation rules. Treat prompting as a way to state constraints, then verify those constraints by replaying failures and running the test under different orders and environments.

When is it better to remove an end-to-end test?

Remove it when the behavior is already protected by trustworthy lower-level and integration tests and the end-to-end case contributes no distinct contract. Keep it, but redesign it, when it is the only check of a critical user journey; in that situation, preserve the journey and replace incidental timing, shared state, or overly specific assertions.
