Fix a Zonemaster failure by diagnosing the individual finding—not by treating the report as one generic error. Record its exact message, module, testcase ID, severity, affected nameserver and any named record or query; then check the matching DNS data or server behavior, make the narrow correction and rerun the test. For proposed parent-side delegation or DS changes, Zonemaster’s CLI can test supplied values in undelegated mode before you publish them.

Start with the exact finding

A Zonemaster report contains individual results from separate tests. Its result fields include the module, message, severity level and testcase identifier; nameserver-module results can also include nameserver context. These details point to what failed and where to investigate. See the Zonemaster API reference.

  • Copy the complete message and note the module and testcase ID.
  • Record the reported severity, nameserver or IP address, and any record name or query details.
  • Keep server-specific findings separate: one server’s result does not establish that every authoritative server behaves the same way.

Severity is useful context, but it does not by itself tell you whether a finding prevents resolution. Test severity can be adjusted through profiles or configuration in documented contexts, so interpret it alongside the testcase and observed behavior. The test-parameter documentation explains configurable test contexts.

Route the failure to the right DNS component

Use the module and testcase to distinguish a delegation issue from nameserver behavior, zone contents, DNSSEC or syntax. Zonemaster’s test catalogue separates checks such as minimum server count, authoritative responses, SOA, glue, NS resolution, DNSSEC validation and name syntax. A failure in one check does not imply that another check has the same cause or repair.

Fix delegation and ordinary zone-data findings

For a delegation, compare the NS records published by the parent with the NS records in the child zone. Check any glue addresses the parent needs to provide, and compare them with the intended address data for the nameservers. Then test each named server directly for authoritative service and expected zone contents, including an SOA record.

  • Authoritative-response finding: confirm the named server answers authoritatively for the zone rather than returning a non-authoritative answer, an error or no useful response.
  • SOA finding: verify the child zone is served with an SOA record.
  • Glue or NS-resolution finding: check that the parent’s delegation and required glue resolve the intended nameservers, and that the child’s NS set agrees.
  • Server-specific or inconsistent result: inspect and correct the server identified in the report, then compare it with the others.

These are distinct tests in Zonemaster’s catalogue; passing one does not establish that the others are fixed.

Resolve DNSSEC findings by comparing parent and child state

First establish whether the child zone is intended to be signed. If it is, check that its DNSKEY records and signatures are served consistently and that the DS at the parent corresponds to the active signing key. If the zone is intended to be unsigned, investigate whether the parent still publishes a DS for it. Compare replies from all relevant parent and child servers: inconsistent answers can themselves explain a failure.

Zonemaster’s DNSSEC materials describe conditions involving parent DS queries that fail or return errors, parent servers that do not provide DS, and differing signed or unsigned configurations. See the DNSSEC implementation and DNSSEC07 scenarios.

Do not submit a DS copied from another zone or an inactive key. Obtain or derive the DS for the active DNSSEC key using your DNS provider or signing system, and verify that it matches the value intended for publication at the parent.

Test proposed parent-side changes before publishing

If the planned repair changes parent delegation, nameserver addresses or DS data, the Zonemaster CLI’s undelegated mode lets you test proposed values before changing the live parent. Supply the intended nameservers and addresses, and DS data if needed. The documented DS fields are keytag, algorithm, digest type and digest; check the CLI documentation for syntax that matches your installed version: Using the Zonemaster CLI.

This is especially useful for catching a mismatch between intended child signing and proposed parent DS data before the parent-side change is made. It does not replace checking the actual live parent and authoritative servers after publication.

Rerun Zonemaster and verify the specific result

  1. Apply the correction to the authoritative zone or server. For live delegation changes, also publish the intended parent-side NS, glue or DS state.
  2. Run Zonemaster again after the relevant data is served and the live parent state is visible. Use the CLI guidance for the command and options for your installed release.
  3. Compare the same testcase and any nameserver-specific details with the original report. Confirm the targeted finding changed as expected, and review any separate findings independently.

If the report concerns connectivity and your local CLI environment lacks IPv6, the CLI documentation describes an option to disable IPv6 for a test. Treat that as an environment-specific diagnostic choice, not as proof that the tested DNS service is reachable over IPv6.

When the current DNS host cannot make the correction

There is no universal provider-specific control-panel procedure for Zonemaster findings. If you are deciding whether to repair the existing host or move authoritative DNS elsewhere, compare whether you can control the parent delegation and child zone, keep all authoritative servers consistent, provide the connectivity implicated by the result, manage DNSSEC keys and DS data, and test proposed changes before publication. These are troubleshooting capabilities to verify, not a ranking of DNS providers.
