Most bad AI photo edits can be repaired by matching the correction to the flaw, keeping the original untouched, and checking the result at both normal viewing size and close zoom. Use Heal for a small blemish, Clone when you need an exact pixel copy, and Generative Remove or Generative Fill only when a large object leaves substantial background to rebuild. In Photoshop, a loose selection with some surrounding pixels, a blank removal prompt, and comparison of generated variations usually produce better results than a tight selection and the first output. If a feature is unavailable, check the document mode, selection, layer type, account access, connection, and regional availability before troubleshooting the computer itself.
What should I do before trying to fix an AI-edited photo?
Preserve the source, identify the exact defect, and choose the smallest reversible correction. Do not flatten or overwrite the only copy of the image while experimenting.
- Save a separate working file. Keep the camera original or untouched export in a different location. In Photoshop, retain the original layer below any generated layer; in Lightroom, use its non-destructive editing workflow.
- Describe the defect precisely. Is it a dust spot, a repeated texture, an unwanted object, a deformed face, unreadable text, a broken shadow, or a perspective problem? The answer determines the tool.
- Check the image at two scales. View it at the size people will normally see, then zoom in to inspect edges, texture, contact points, and fine detail. A fill that looks convincing at 200% can look like an obvious patch at normal size, and the reverse can also happen.
- Decide whether accuracy matters more than appearance. A creative social image may tolerate invented background detail. A record, evidence image, or wildlife submission may not.
When an edit is uncertain, hide the generated result and compare it with the untouched image before making another change. This makes it easier to tell whether you are repairing the original problem or merely covering up a new artifact.
Which tool should I use for a blemish, repeated texture, or large object?
Use the least powerful tool that can solve the problem cleanly. The following distinctions come from Adobe’s Lightroom guidance and Photoshop Generative Fill instructions.

For small cleanup, starting with Heal or Clone keeps the change predictable. Generative tools are more appropriate when there is not enough nearby texture to copy, such as removing a person from a busy scene or rebuilding a broad section of sky. Generative Remove in Lightroom is non-destructive and needs a stable internet connection.
How do I remove an unwanted object with Photoshop Generative Fill?
Create a loose selection around the object, include a little surrounding image, leave the prompt blank, and compare the generated variations. Keep the untouched original layer and work with the generated result separately.
- Open a suitable document. The file must be eligible for generative features; if the command is missing, follow the checks in the section below before continuing.
- Select the unwanted object. Use a selection tool to outline the object and include some nearby background. Adobe specifically advises against an overly precise outline for this removal task because the extra context helps the model infer what should replace the object.
- Run Generative Fill with no description. Leave the text prompt empty when the goal is simply to remove the selected object. A descriptive prompt can ask for a new object rather than a clean reconstruction of the existing scene.
- Review every variation. Compare the alternatives in the Properties or contextual controls. Look for warped lines, duplicated textures, implausible shadows, and edges that do not meet the surrounding scene.
- Generate again when needed. If all options are poor, adjust the selection so it contains useful context and create another set of variations instead of accepting the first result.
- Keep the generated layer above the original. Mask, hide, or delete a bad result. Do not flatten over the source until you are certain the edit is acceptable and you have retained a separate archival copy.
A loose selection does not guarantee a seamless fill. It simply gives the model more information. Straight architecture, repeated patterns, hair, transparent objects, and areas where one object touches another deserve especially close inspection.

Use Generative Remove for a large distraction, then regenerate or switch to Heal or Clone when the result is visibly synthetic. Lightroom’s tool is designed for substantial removals, while smaller corrections are usually easier to control manually.
- Choose Generative Remove for the right scale. Select the distracting object and the area that needs to be rebuilt. Use it when a meaningful amount of background is missing, not for every tiny speck.
- Inspect the generated area at normal size. Check whether the rebuilt background follows the scene’s perspective, lighting, and texture.
- Regenerate if the context is ambiguous. A different result may align better with nearby shapes. Do not assume the first output is the most accurate.
- Use Heal for a small blemish. Heal samples texture and blends it, making it suitable for dust, small marks, or minor skin cleanup.
- Use Clone when matching matters. Choose a clean source area and copy it deliberately when you need a predictable, pixel-level duplicate.
Because Generative Remove requires a stable internet connection, a network interruption can prevent generation or leave the operation incomplete. Save the catalog or working file after a successful correction so you can return to a known state.
Why does Generative Fill create blotchy or unnatural texture?
The most common causes are a poor selection boundary, insufficient surrounding context, or accepting one generated variation without comparison. Hide the result, improve the setup, and regenerate rather than painting over an artifact.

The selection is too tight
A selection that hugs the object exactly may give the model too little information about the texture and structure that should continue behind it. Expand it enough to include a small amount of surrounding image, while avoiding unrelated objects that could confuse the reconstruction.

If the selection crosses a person, a railing, and a textured wall, the model must decide which pattern belongs in the missing region. Break the repair into smaller, logically consistent selections when practical. Work on one surface or object boundary at a time.
The first variation is merely plausible
Generative output can look realistic without being faithful to the scene. Compare all available variations and generate another set when none preserve the local pattern, lighting, or geometry. Keep unsuccessful versions hidden rather than stacking them into the final image.
The repair is being judged only while zoomed in
At high magnification, harmless pixel-level differences can seem dramatic; at normal size, a large warped edge may be easy to miss. Alternate between the two views and check the image in the context in which it will actually be shown.
What should I check when Generative Fill is unavailable?
Start with document and layer eligibility, then check account, connection, credits, region, and software version. Adobe lists unsupported file settings and missing selections among the common reasons the feature is disabled.
- Color mode and bit depth: Confirm the document is RGB and 8-bit. Other modes or bit depths can make the command unavailable.
- Active selection: Make an actual pixel selection before opening Generative Fill. A layer with no selected area may not satisfy the command’s requirements.
- Layer state: Select an unlocked raster layer. A locked layer cannot accept the result, and a Smart Object may need to be rasterized for this workflow.
- Account permission: Verify that the signed-in account is allowed to use generative features and that any applicable credits remain available.
- Connection and location: Generative processing needs internet access, and availability can vary by country or region.
- Installed version: Menus and requirements change. Check the current Adobe Help instructions for the exact Photoshop version you have installed rather than relying on an older tutorial.
After changing a document mode or rasterizing a layer, save a copy first. Those operations can affect other edits, and you may want the original layered structure available for recovery.

How do I stop Photoshop from freezing or crashing during generation?
Update the graphics driver, test Photoshop’s GPU acceleration setting in both positions, and then consider reinstalling the application if the problem persists. Adobe also identifies system compatibility, connectivity, account access, credits, and regional availability as possible factors, so a crash is not proof of a single GPU fault.
- Save and close other demanding applications. This reduces competing memory and graphics load while you test.
- Update the GPU driver. Install the current driver recommended for your graphics hardware and operating system, then restart the computer.
- Toggle GPU acceleration. In Photoshop, open Preferences > Performance and switch the graphics processor setting. Test one generation with acceleration enabled and another with it disabled; the stable choice depends on the system.
- Verify the service prerequisites. Confirm the computer is online, the correct account is signed in, and the feature is available for your region and account.
- Retry with a smaller selection. A very large or complicated request can be harder to process. Testing a modest area helps separate a document-specific problem from a general application problem.
- Reinstall Photoshop if failures continue. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance lists reinstalling the application as a later step after driver and GPU checks.
Record which setting worked and keep it with your workstation notes. A change that fixes one driver version may need to be revisited after a future Photoshop or operating-system update.
How can I repair AI mistakes in faces, hands, text, and scene geometry?
Inspect details that carry meaning instead of relying on one familiar “AI tell.” Faces, fingers, lettering, repeated objects, contact points, straight lines, perspective, and shadows are high-value checks, but none alone proves that an image was AI-edited.
Faces and hands
Check eye alignment, teeth, earrings, hair boundaries, finger count, joint direction, and whether hands actually grip or touch the object they appear to hold. Compare the repaired region with the original and with nearby lighting; a technically sharp face can still have inconsistent highlights or skin texture.
Text and logos
Read every character at close zoom. Generated text often has convincing shapes that fail as actual words, numbers, or labels. If the lettering matters, rebuild it with a conventional text or vector tool rather than asking a generative fill to invent exact typography.
Lines, perspective, and repeated objects
Follow fences, window frames, horizons, cables, tiles, and building edges across the repaired area. Look for kinks, sudden thickness changes, impossible vanishing points, or repeated objects that are too similar. These checks are prompts for closer inspection, not standalone proof of manipulation.

Shadows and contact
Objects should meet the ground, hand, wall, or other surface with believable contact shadows and occlusion. A removed object may leave a shadow with no source, while an added object may appear to float because the generated pixels do not connect it convincingly to its surroundings.

For documentation, evidence, and records, a visually pleasing reconstruction can change what the photograph means. eBird and the Macaulay Library state: “Media must faithfully represent the organism, sound, or environment as it appeared at the time of documentation.”
Their policy permits ordinary exposure and color adjustments, cropping, and limited cleanup, but disallows generative fill, object removal, or object addition that affects the organism, its perch, or the surrounding environment. That is a specific submission policy, not a universal legal rule; other organizations may define acceptable processing differently.
- Keep the unedited original and disclose conventional adjustments when a submission system asks for them.
- Do not use generative reconstruction to remove a branch, alter an animal’s perch, add a missing body part, or change the surrounding habitat in a documentary submission.
- If you need a cleaned-up presentation copy, label it as edited and keep it separate from the evidentiary or archival file.
How should I review and save the finished correction?
Review the image as a viewer would see it, then audit the repaired pixels at close range. Preserve an editable version until the image has passed both checks.

- Zoom into transitions. Inspect object boundaries, hair, fine lines, texture direction, shadows, and repeated patterns.
- Toggle the edit. Compare the generated or cloned result with the untouched source so you can identify both improvements and newly introduced errors.
- Check meaningful details again. Read text, count fingers, follow straight lines, and inspect contact points where relevant.
- Keep the layered or non-destructive master. In Photoshop, retain the generated layer above the original and mask or discard alternatives. In Lightroom, keep the edit in the catalog or working file rather than replacing the source.
- Export a separate delivery copy. Use a new filename so the original and editable master remain recoverable if a later review finds an invented detail.

- Large object and missing background? Use Generative Remove or Photoshop Generative Fill with a loose, contextual selection.
- Result looks blotchy? Hide it, improve the selection, compare variations, and regenerate.
- Command disabled? Check RGB/8-bit, active selection, unlocked raster layer, account, credits, connection, region, and version.
- Application freezes? Update the GPU driver, toggle GPU acceleration under Preferences > Performance, and reinstall only after those checks.
- Image is documentary? Follow the governing policy before making any generative or object-removal edit.
The safest repair is the smallest one that solves the visible problem while leaving the original recoverable.

Can I undo a generative edit after closing Photoshop?
Only if you saved an editable document or retained the original separately. A flattened export cannot restore the hidden source layer, so keep a layered master and make delivery copies from it.
Why does a removed object leave a repeated pattern behind?
