Most PULSE 3D connection and audio faults on PlayStation consoles are resolved by checking the USB wireless adapter, power-cycling the headset, correcting the CHAT/GAME balance, and removing nearby sources of USB or wireless interference. If those checks fail, reset the adapter and headset together: leave the adapter in a powered USB-A port, press its reset button with a small pin for at least one second, then hold CHAT and VOLUME+ while sliding the headset’s power switch on. The procedure below separates pairing, sound, microphone, dropout, and charging symptoms so you can apply the shortest fix first.
What should I check first when my PULSE 3D headset will not connect?
Start with the physical link and power state before changing console settings. The PULSE 3D Wireless Headset models CFI-ZWH1 and CFI-ZWD1 use a dedicated USB wireless adapter for wireless pairing with PS5 and PS4; the headset does not establish its normal console connection without that adapter.
- Charge the headset from a supported USB device. If the battery is empty, the headset may appear unresponsive even though the console and adapter are working.
- Reseat the wireless adapter. Remove it and insert it firmly into a powered USB-A port on the console. A loose connection can prevent pairing or cause intermittent audio.
- Turn the headset off, then on again. This power cycle clears a temporary state without changing your settings.
- Remove unused wireless adapters. Leaving extra adapters connected can create avoidable radio and USB congestion.
- Move other wireless equipment away from the adapter. Sony notes that another Bluetooth device or excessive distance from the console can interfere with the headset connection.
After these checks, watch the headset’s behavior. If it reconnects and stays on, move to the audio-output checks below. If it still fails to connect or shuts itself off after an attempted connection, perform the documented pairing reset rather than repeatedly toggling the power switch.

How do I reset PULSE 3D pairing?
The pairing reset clears the relationship between the headset and its USB adapter, then establishes it again. Perform both parts of the reset in the order shown; resetting only the headset or only the adapter will not complete the documented procedure.

- PlayStation Link wireless connection for PlayStation 5 consoles, PlayStation Portal remote player and PC / Mac
- Bluetooth 5.0 and 3.5mm audio jack for Mobile devices

- Turn the headset off.
- Leave the USB wireless adapter plugged into a powered USB-A port on the PS5 or PS4.
- Use a small pin to press the reset button in the adapter’s reset hole for at least one second.
- On the headset, press and hold the CHAT and VOLUME+ buttons together.
- While continuing to hold those two buttons, slide the power switch on.
- Release the buttons after the headset starts the reconnection process and listen for the normal connected state.
A successful reset reconnects the headset and adapter. If the connection still cannot be made, the PULSE 3D instruction manual says the headset turns off when a connection cannot be established. That automatic shutoff points back to the adapter, USB power, distance, or interference checks rather than to the PS5 game’s audio options.
What if the reset does not work?
- Repeat the procedure with the adapter in a different powered USB-A port.
- Confirm that the headset was fully off before you pressed the adapter reset button.
- Keep other wireless devices and unused adapters away while pairing.
- If a USB 3.0 device is beside the adapter, disconnect it temporarily before trying again.
The reset is intended for pairing failures. It will not correct a simple game/chat mix setting or a muted microphone, so use the symptom-specific checks in the next sections when the headset is connected but the audio is wrong.
Why can I hear game audio but not chat, or chat but not the game?
The PULSE 3D has separate CHAT and GAME controls. Moving the balance too far toward one side can make the other channel seem missing even though the headset is connected correctly.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press the PULSE 3D CHAT and GAME buttons to move the mix toward the channel you cannot hear.
- To return the mix to its neutral setting, press CHAT and GAME together.
- On PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Confirm that the selected output device is the PULSE 3D headset rather than the television, receiver, or another connected device.
- Play a known game or system sound while adjusting the balance, then test party chat separately.
Use the balance controls before resetting pairing. A headset can remain wirelessly connected while a heavily shifted mix hides one audio source, and changing the output device on the PS5 can route sound away from the headset without affecting its connection indicator.
How can I tell whether the problem is the console output or the headset?
If both game and chat are absent, check the PS5 output-device selection first and then reseat the adapter. If one source is present and the other is not, restore the CHAT/GAME balance before changing any other setting. This order avoids treating a routing or mix problem as a hardware failure.

How do I stop PULSE 3D audio from skipping or disconnecting?
Skipping and sudden disconnects are commonly caused by radio interference, USB 3.0 noise, or too little distance between the wireless adapter and other active devices. Sony specifically advises removing USB 3.0 devices from the console when troubleshooting this symptom.
- Disconnect USB 3.0 devices from the PS5 or PS4 temporarily, especially devices next to the wireless adapter.
- If another wireless headset or USB 3.0 device must remain connected, separate the adapter from those devices with a USB extension cable.
- Move nearby wireless equipment farther from the adapter and keep the headset within a practical distance of the console.
- Remove any unused wireless headset adapters.
- Power-cycle the headset after changing the USB layout, then test the same game or chat session again.
An extension cable is useful because it increases physical distance between the adapter and noisy USB hardware; it is not a replacement for the PULSE 3D adapter. If the headset repeatedly loses its link after the interference sources are removed, run the full pairing reset with the adapter still in a powered USB-A port.
Why does moving closer help?
Sony’s support guidance identifies distance from the console and interference from another Bluetooth device as possible causes of a failed or unstable connection. A closer test is a diagnostic step: if the link becomes stable nearby but fails at the normal seating position, improve adapter placement or reduce competing wireless activity before investigating other symptoms.
How do I fix a PULSE 3D headset that will not charge?
Charging faults should be isolated to the USB port, cable, or headset before you attempt another pairing reset. Sony states that a full charge may take up to 3.5 hours, so a short connection to power is not evidence that the battery is full.
- Connect the headset to a supported USB device and verify that the cable is fully seated at the headset end and at the power source.
- Try a different USB port.
- Try a different compatible USB cable.
- Leave the headset connected for the full charging period; Sony’s estimate is up to 3.5 hours for a complete charge.
- After charging, disconnect the cable, turn the headset on, and test the wireless adapter again.
Changing one variable at a time helps identify the failing component. If a second port works, the original port or its connection was the issue. If a different cable works, keep the known-good cable for charging tests. If neither change produces charging behavior, the remaining fault may be in the headset or the power source, and pairing resets are unlikely to solve it.

Can I troubleshoot charging and pairing at the same time?
Separate the tests. First establish that the headset can accept charge, then perform pairing with the cable disconnected and the adapter powered. Testing both functions independently prevents an empty battery from being mistaken for a wireless failure.
How do I stop microphone echo on PS5?
Adjust the PS5 microphone input level rather than changing the CHAT/GAME balance. On PS5, the relevant control is under Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level.
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Sound, then Microphone.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level.
- Move the fader two to four notches to the left.
- Ask a party member to confirm whether the echo has stopped, then make smaller adjustments if necessary.
The two-to-four-notch change is Sony’s specific starting guidance for echo. Make the adjustment while the PULSE 3D is the active input device; changing an unrelated microphone will not affect the headset’s captured voice.
What is different on PS5 and PS4?
The same CFI-ZWH1 and CFI-ZWD1 PULSE 3D models are listed as compatible with both PS5 and PS4, and both use the USB wireless adapter for console pairing. The console-side menus and companion-app support are not identical.
| Area | PS5 | PS4 |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless pairing | USB wireless adapter required; reset through the adapter and headset controls when pairing fails. | USB wireless adapter required; use the same documented adapter-and-headset reset when pairing fails. |
| Output check | Settings > Sound > Audio Output confirms the selected output device. | Use the console’s audio-output controls and verify that the headset is selected through the connected adapter. |
| Microphone echo path | Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level; move the fader two to four notches left for echo. | The PS5 microphone menu is not available; apply the physical, power, adapter, and interference checks first. |
| Headset Companion app | Not compatible with PS5 consoles. | The app limitation stated by Sony applies specifically to PS5; use the console and headset controls for PS5 troubleshooting. |
Do not install or rely on the Headset Companion app to repair a PS5 connection. Sony’s guidance is to use the console settings and the headset’s reset procedure instead.

Which fix matches the symptom?
Use the symptom as the decision point so you do not reset a headset that only needs a setting changed.
| Symptom | First intervention | Next intervention if it persists | Primary component to inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headset will not pair | Reseat the powered USB wireless adapter and power-cycle the headset. | Reset the adapter with a pin, then hold CHAT and VOLUME+ while powering on. | USB wireless adapter, headset power, USB port |
| Game or chat channel seems missing | Press CHAT and GAME together to restore the balance. | Check PS5 output selection under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. | Headset controls and console output setting |
| Audio skips or disconnects | Remove USB 3.0 devices and unused adapters. | Use a USB extension cable to increase distance from other USB or wireless devices. | Adapter placement and nearby devices |
| Headset will not charge | Try another USB port. | Try another compatible cable and allow up to 3.5 hours for a full charge. | USB port, cable, headset charging circuit |
| Microphone echo | Open the PS5 microphone-level menu. | Move the fader two to four notches left and retest with another party member. | PS5 microphone input level |
What should I do if problems continue after every documented fix?
Record which part of the workflow succeeded and which did not. For example, a headset that charges with a second cable but still cannot pair points to the adapter or wireless environment; a headset that pairs but has one missing channel points to the CHAT/GAME balance or output routing instead. This distinction is useful before seeking service or a replacement accessory.
- If the adapter is never detected: repeat the test in another powered USB-A port and remove nearby USB 3.0 devices.
- If the adapter works but the headset will not reconnect: perform the complete adapter reset and headset-button sequence, not a partial reset.
- If audio is present but the microphone is unusable: use the PS5 microphone-level control and verify that the PULSE 3D is the active input.
- If charging remains impossible after another port and cable: treat the headset, cable, and power source as separate suspects rather than repeating pairing steps.
Keep the exact model number (CFI-ZWH1 or CFI-ZWD1), console model, USB port used, and the result of each test when contacting PlayStation support. Those details show whether the failure follows the headset, the adapter, or a particular console port.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PULSE 3D turn off when I try to connect it?
The PULSE 3D instruction manual says the headset turns off when a connection cannot be made. Leave the adapter in a powered USB-A port, remove nearby interference, and then run the adapter reset plus the CHAT-and-VOLUME+ power-on sequence.
Can I use the PULSE 3D while it is connected by USB for charging?
The documented troubleshooting steps treat charging and wireless pairing as separate tests. Establish a reliable charge first, then disconnect the cable and test the wireless adapter so a power problem is not confused with a pairing problem.
How long should I leave a PULSE 3D headset charging before testing it?
Sony says a full charge may take up to 3.5 hours. If charging appears incomplete, test a different USB port and a different compatible cable before assuming the headset battery has failed.
Why does my headset work near the console but not from my seat?
That pattern indicates distance or interference may be affecting the wireless link. Sony identifies distance and other Bluetooth devices as possible causes; relocating the adapter or separating it from USB 3.0 equipment with an extension cable can help.
