Most Bambu Lab failures can be narrowed down quickly by starting with the exact Hardware and Machine Status (HMS) message, then following the model-specific procedure it opens. For a printer that will not extrude, use a cool-hotend cleaning sequence; for an AMS that will not feed, check spool resistance, PTFE tubing, pneumatic fittings and feeder debris; for a bad first layer, verify the plate, material profile and calibration. Stop and contact support for persistent temperature, electrical, motor or sensor faults rather than repeatedly forcing a repair.
What should I do first when a Bambu Lab printer reports a problem?
Read the complete HMS notification on the printer screen or in Bambu software before changing settings or removing parts. HMS is Bambu Lab’s fault-diagnosis system for the printer and AMS; its message identifies the symptom, and the notification’s QR code opens the relevant diagnostic guidance.
- Write down the exact HMS code and wording, including any reference to the printer or AMS.
- Open the notification on the printer or in the app and scan its QR code if one is shown.
- Search that exact code in the Bambu Lab Wiki and use the instructions for your specific model.
- Only after reading the model-specific procedure, decide whether the remedy is a user-cleanable part, a reseated connection or a replacement assembly.
A generic fix can make a model-specific fault worse. For example, a calibration error may require a particular plate or sensor check, while an AMS warning may require work on tubing rather than the hotend.

How do I fix a Bambu Lab printer that is not extruding or is under-extruding?
No extrusion, air printing, a first layer with little plastic and an extruder that clicks all point to a flow problem. The safe response is to stop the job, cool the hotend completely and then work through manual extrusion, an unclogging pin and a cold pull before replacing the hotend if flow does not return.

Bambu Lab’s H2D 3D Printing User Manual states: “If the printer reports an extruder motor overload or air printing error, or if the hotend fails to extrude filament properly (even without an error), proceed with the following troubleshooting.” That procedure is written for the H2D; other models can use different access steps, so confirm the equivalent instructions for your machine.
Use this cool, controlled unclogging sequence
- Stop the print. Do not continue an air-printing job while the extruder is clicking or the nozzle is producing no plastic.
- Let the hotend cool before removal. A hotend can remain hot after a job ends. Do not touch or remove it while it is hot.
- Inspect the hotend and extruder. Look for a visible filament plug, broken filament or debris that prevents the filament from entering the melt zone.
- Try manual extrusion. Use the printer’s manual-extrusion control with the approved filament loaded. If filament advances normally, purge enough material to confirm a steady stream.
- Use the model-approved unclogging pin. Follow the manual’s direction and never force a pin through a hotend that the procedure says must be cool or in a particular position.
- Perform a cold pull when the manual calls for it. A cold pull can remove softened residue that a pin does not dislodge. Follow the temperature and loading instructions for the exact hotend assembly.
- Test extrusion again. Run a short manual extrusion and observe whether the filament exits continuously rather than curling back, thinning or stopping.
- Replace the hotend if cleaning does not restore flow. Use the assembly specified for your printer model and nozzle configuration; do not substitute an unverified part.
If the extruder still overloads after the documented cleaning path, stop rather than repeatedly driving filament against the obstruction. A persistent motor-overload message can indicate a mechanical fault that needs support.
How to choose between cleaning and replacement
| Observed symptom | First action | Risk level | Replace when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clicking extruder, air printing or little plastic | Stop the job, cool the hotend, inspect and try manual extrusion | Heated component; cool before handling | Manual extrusion, pin cleaning and a cold pull do not restore flow |
| Filament stream is interrupted after a partial purge | Use the documented unclogging pin or cold-pull procedure | User-cleanable only with the model’s procedure | The obstruction remains after the approved cleaning steps |
| Extruder motor-overload message persists | Stop and follow the HMS/model-specific diagnostic page | Possible mechanical or motor fault | Only the documented model-specific assembly should be fitted |
Why will my Bambu AMS not load, unload or feed filament?
AMS feed failures usually come from resistance somewhere along the filament path: a tangled or dragging spool, worn PTFE tubing, a loose pneumatic connector or dust in the feeder. Check the path from spool to printer instead of repeatedly commanding load or unload.

Check the spool and filament path
- Inspect the spool. Make sure filament is not crossed, snagged on the rim or rubbing against the spool holder. Correct any tangle and confirm the spool turns freely.
- Trace the complete path through the AMS. Look for a sharp bend, a piece of broken filament or resistance at the point where the filament enters or exits the AMS.
- Inspect PTFE tubes for wear. Bambu Lab’s AMS HT manual warns: “Over time, the PTFE tube can experience wear as filament passes through it, leading to feeding issues or clogs.” Replace tubing that is visibly damaged, deformed or worn enough to impede movement.
- Check each pneumatic connector. A tube that is loose at its fitting, or filament that struggles at the connector, can require reseating or replacement of the connector.
- Remove feeder dust and filament fragments. Residual dust can increase drag and interfere with the feeder. Clear it using the maintenance method specified for your AMS model.
- Retry load or unload. Test the affected slot after the obstruction or damaged component has been corrected, then test another slot if needed to determine whether the problem follows the slot.
What does AMS desiccant have to do with feeding?
The AMS uses desiccant to help maintain a dry internal environment. Bambu Lab says its effectiveness declines; replace the desiccant after it loses effectiveness. Desiccant is a maintenance consumable, so a saturated pack should not be treated as a permanent component.
| AMS symptom | Inspect first | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Filament will not load from one slot | Spool tangles, rim drag and the slot’s filament path | Free the spool and remove any obstruction before retrying |
| Filament stops or clogs in the path | PTFE tube for wear, kinks or internal damage | Replace damaged PTFE tubing with model-compatible tubing |
| Filament struggles at a tube fitting | Pneumatic connector seating and tube end | Reseat the tube or replace the connector if it no longer holds securely |
| Repeated feed resistance with visible dust | Feeder and surrounding filament debris | Clean the feeder using the AMS maintenance procedure |
| AMS environment is no longer dry | Desiccant condition | Replace desiccant after it has lost effectiveness |
How do I fix a failed first layer or calibration on a Bambu Lab printer?
Treat first-layer defects and calibration failures as setup problems first. Confirm the build plate, material profile, plate seating and requested calibration before adjusting hardware or changing slicer values.
- Match the build plate and material profile. Select the plate type actually installed and the material profile intended for that surface.
- Seat and clean the plate. Ensure it is fully seated and free of residue that could change adhesion or height detection.
- Run the requested bed-leveling or other calibration. Let the calibration complete instead of cancelling it when the printer asks for the process.
- Read the HMS code if calibration fails. The H2D manual lists printable-area, nozzle-offset and motion-accuracy calibration failures among common issues. Each can require a different model-specific procedure.
- Recheck the setup after a correction. A plate change, nozzle work or altered material profile can require calibration again.
Do not apply a generic offset adjustment merely because a first layer looks poor. If the machine reports a specific HMS code, use that code’s procedure for the model and firmware combination shown in the notification.

Separate adhesion symptoms from calibration faults
A first layer that is uniformly too high or too low points toward plate seating, leveling or nozzle-offset calibration. A patchy layer can instead reflect a dirty plate or a surface/profile mismatch. When the printer names printable-area, nozzle-offset or motion accuracy, follow the named diagnostic branch rather than treating all three as the same height problem.

What should I check when the printer reports heat, fan or sensor problems?
Temperature regulation depends on a clean heating unit, fan and heat sink, plus secure electrical connections. Clean those accessible areas according to the model’s maintenance instructions and inspect connectors when a sensor or temperature message appears.
- Heating unit: remove accumulated material or dust that can interfere with heat transfer or regulation.
- Fan: verify that the fan is not obstructed and can operate as expected; a blocked fan can affect cooling and temperature control.
- Heat sink: keep its fins clear so heat can dissipate properly.
- Connectors: when a sensor or temperature warning appears, check that the relevant connector is fully seated and undamaged.
These checks do not authorize opening live electrical sections or handling a hot assembly. If the message persists after the documented, power-safe checks, stop using the printer and escalate it.

Which Bambu Lab repairs are safe to do myself?
Use the symptom, risk and compatibility of the proposed action to decide. Cleaning a cool hotend, clearing feeder dust, inspecting a spool and reseating an accessible tube are different from working on energized wiring, a hot assembly or a model-specific sensor.
| Action | When it fits | Safety boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect spool and filament path | AMS load, unload or feed resistance | Stop the motion and remove filament only as the model procedure directs |
| Clean a cool hotend or use an unclogging pin | No extrusion, air printing or motor overload caused by an obstruction | Allow the hotend to cool fully before removal or contact |
| Cold pull | Residue remains after manual extrusion and the manual specifies this method | Use the exact temperature and sequence for the hotend assembly |
| Reseat PTFE tubing or a pneumatic connector | Tube is loose or filament binds at the fitting | Replace rather than force a connector that will not hold the tube |
| Replace a hotend, PTFE tube, connector or desiccant | The component is worn, damaged or ineffective | Verify printer/AMS model compatibility before installation |
| Open or repair electrical, motor or sensor hardware | Only when the model-specific service documentation explicitly directs it | Persistent faults should be handled by Bambu support |
When should I stop troubleshooting and contact Bambu support?
Stop using the printer when a temperature, electrical, motor or sensor fault remains after the documented checks. Continuing to print through a persistent fault can turn a diagnostic problem into component damage.

How can I prevent these Bambu Lab problems from returning?
Use a short maintenance inspection whenever a symptom appears and during routine care. The goal is to catch resistance, wear and contamination before they become a failed print.
- Keep the build plate clean and confirm its selected profile matches the installed surface.
- Inspect the hotend, extruder, heating unit, fan and heat sink for residue or obstruction.
- Check AMS spools for tangles and drag before starting a multi-material print.
- Examine PTFE tubes for wear and replace damaged tubing rather than continuing to force filament through it.
- Verify pneumatic connectors hold their tubes securely.
- Clear filament dust from AMS feeders.
- Check desiccant condition and replace it after it loses effectiveness.
- Complete the printer’s requested leveling and calibration routines after relevant hardware or plate changes.
Keep the exact HMS message with your maintenance notes. It gives the next troubleshooting session a precise starting point and helps support distinguish a recurring fault from a one-time obstruction.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should Bambu AMS PTFE tubing be replaced?
There is no universal replacement interval in the AMS guidance. Inspect the tube for wear and replace it when its condition causes feeding resistance, a clog or a loose fit at the connector.
Can I clear a Bambu nozzle while it is still hot?
No. The documented unclogging path requires stopping the job and allowing the hotend to cool before removal or handling. Use only the temperature and cold-pull sequence specified for your hotend model.
What information does Bambu support need for an intermittent fault?
Send the exact HMS code, printer and AMS models, firmware version and a concise record of the checks already performed. Mention whether the fault occurs during loading, unloading, extrusion, calibration or temperature regulation.
Does replacing AMS desiccant repair a filament jam?
Desiccant maintains a dry AMS environment, but it does not remove a physical obstruction. For a jam, inspect the spool, PTFE path, pneumatic connector and feeder first; replace desiccant when it has lost effectiveness.
