A multicolor print usually misses a color for one of four reasons: the change marker is on the wrong layer, the printer never executed its pause or tool-change command, the previous filament was not completely unloaded and purged, or the two materials are incompatible. Start with the sliced preview, then verify the generated command, perform a complete unload/load/purge cycle, and provide a wipe destination such as a wipe tower. The selected layer is the first layer printed after a scheduled pause, so an apparently skipped color is often an off-by-one placement rather than a hardware failure.

Why did my multicolor 3D print miss a color or show the old color?

Use this order when diagnosing a failed transition. It separates slicing errors from printer behavior and material contamination instead of changing several settings at once.

  • Wrong layer marker: In the documented PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer workflows, the pause occurs before the selected layer. A marker placed one layer too early or too late makes the transition appear to be missed.
  • No executed pause or tool change: A slicer can contain a color-change instruction that the printer profile does not understand or does not pass through. PrusaSlicer normally emits M600 for a scheduled color change; OrcaSlicer can use M600 or PAUSE for a manual change.
  • Residual filament in the melt zone: Loading a new spool successfully does not remove the plastic already melted in the nozzle. Until that material is expelled, the first part of the new color will be streaked or muted.
  • Incompatible material families: Prusa Research advises, “Always mix PLA with PLA, PETG with PETG and so on.” A swap between different polymer families can produce poor interlayer adhesion as well as an unattractive transition.

Do not diagnose the color from the preview alone. Preview colors are visual aids; in PrusaSlicer they do not themselves add a command to the generated G-code.

How do I check whether the color-change layer is correct?

Inspect the transition in the slicer before touching the printer. The layer number you select is the first layer printed after the pause, not the last layer printed in the old color.

  1. Identify the first physical layer that should contain the new color. If that is layer 40, the change marker belongs at layer 40.
  2. Open the slicer’s layer preview and move the vertical layer slider to the marker.
  3. Check the layer immediately before and the selected layer. The old color should occupy the preceding layer, while the selected layer should be assigned to the new color.
  4. Scrub several layers above and below the transition. This catches a second marker, an accidental color assignment, or a model feature that makes a one-layer change difficult to see.
  5. Re-slice after moving the marker. A preview from an earlier slice does not prove that the current G-code contains the intended pause.

Both PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer document the “pause before selected layer” behavior. If the color boundary in the preview is correct but the machine prints continuously, move to command and profile checks rather than repeatedly changing the layer number.

How do I verify that the printer received and executed the pause?

First determine which command your sliced file contains, then confirm that your printer firmware and profile act on it. A silent print-through means the change command was not recognized, was removed, or was mapped to a non-pausing action.

Workflow Expected command What to check Likely symptom if wrong
PrusaSlicer scheduled color change M600 Machine G-code settings and firmware support for filament-change commands The print continues without asking for a spool change
OrcaSlicer manual multimaterial change M600 or PAUSE The selected command in the printer profile and the pause macro’s behavior The printer pauses at the wrong action, or never pauses
Manual single-nozzle workflow A slicer-inserted pause, M600, or PAUSE That the generated file contains the instruction at the intended layer No opportunity to unload the old spool before the new layer

Use the slicer’s G-code viewer or a text editor to locate the command near the transition. Then run a short test file and watch the machine: the hot end should stop before the first layer assigned to the new color. If the command is present but ignored, inspect the printer profile and machine G-code configuration before changing filament temperatures or purge settings. Firmware implementations and screen labels vary by printer model, so use the controls your machine exposes for unloading, loading, and resuming.

How do I unload, load, and purge filament cleanly?

Perform the material swap while the nozzle is at the temperature required by the printer’s filament-change routine. The goal is not merely to feed the new strand; it is to extrude until the stream is consistently the new color.

  1. Wait for the commanded pause. Do not move the layer marker or pull filament while the printer is still printing the old-color layer.
  2. Unload the old spool. Use the printer’s unload control or the procedure specified by its firmware. Keep the removed end from dragging dust into the filament path.
  3. Cut and guide the new filament. Trim a clean point, straighten the first section, and feed it through the normal filament path until the drive gears engage.
  4. Extrude at the pause. Use the printer’s load or extrude control and watch the nozzle. Continue until the extrusion is a uniform version of the new color rather than a swirl, stripe, or brownish blend.
  5. Clear the purge strand. Remove the expelled material from the nozzle without touching the hot end. A loose strand left on the bed can be dragged into the next layer.
  6. Resume only after the stream is clean. The new color should be established before the first post-pause layer begins.

A manual-change guide for printers without an automatic material system places the pause before the first layer of the new color and likewise requires purging until the old color has fully cleared. The exact menu names and resume control differ by model; the sequence is the part that matters.

How much purge is needed, and where should the purge material go?

There is no universal purge length that works for every nozzle, color pair, temperature, and filament path. Judge the change by a continuous new-color stream and confirm it with a small test print rather than by a fixed distance.

During a swap, melted plastic remains in the nozzle. Prusa’s documented solutions are a smart wipe tower, wiping into infill, or wiping onto another object. Configure one of these destinations when your slicer supports it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Smart wipe tower: The tower receives purge lines between color changes and is designed to stabilize flow while producing sharper transitions with less waste than an uncontrolled purge.
  • Wipe to infill: The slicer deposits the mixed material inside the model. This is suitable only when the infill will not be visible through thin walls or translucent sections.
  • Wipe to object: A sacrificial object can accept the contaminated lines, keeping the principal model cleaner.

Be careful with light-colored or thin-walled parts. Dark purge material hidden in visible infill can show through the exterior; adding perimeters is preferable to concealing a large dark transition in a model whose walls transmit light. A purge destination reduces visible contamination, but it does not replace the initial extrusion check at the nozzle.

What should I do when the two filaments are incompatible?

Keep the polymer family consistent for a manual color swap: PLA with PLA, PETG with PETG, and so on. Different families can require different nozzle temperatures, bed conditions, and cooling behavior, so a color change that looks clean may still leave a mechanically weak interface.

If a project genuinely requires different materials, treat it as a multimaterial compatibility problem rather than a color problem. Confirm that the printer, hot end, and slicer profile support the combination, and expect to create separate settings for temperature and adhesion. The documented guidance does not establish a universal set of cross-family settings, so do not assume that a successful feed proves the materials will bond.

What does a defective wipe tower tell me?

The position of the defect helps identify which part of the change failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Defect in the center of the tower: Suspect an unload problem. The old filament may not have withdrawn fully, leaving a contaminated section that the tower cannot immediately clear.
  • Defect at the edge of the tower: Suspect incomplete purging after the old filament was unloaded. The new filament reached the nozzle, but the mixed melt was not expelled before the next transition.

If the same pattern persists, update the slicer and printer profile, then repeat a small test. Keep a photograph of the tower and the exact G-code file when requesting support; the defect location and file configuration are more useful than a description such as “the colors look wrong.”

How do I set up a color change in PrusaSlicer?

PrusaSlicer can insert a scheduled color change from the layer slider, and the usual machine action is an M600 filament-change command.

  1. Load the model and assign the intended colors in the object or filament settings.
  2. Open Preview and move the layer slider to the first layer that should print in the new color.
  3. Use the layer-slider control to add a color change at that layer. You can also insert a pause or custom G-code at a layer when your printer profile requires a different action.
  4. Inspect the transition in preview, remembering that the selected layer prints after the pause.
  5. Slice again and verify that the generated file contains the expected M600 or your configured custom command.
  6. At the machine pause, unload, load, and purge until the extrusion is consistently the new color, then resume.

If the preview shows the intended colors but the printer never stops, leave the layer marker in place and correct the machine G-code configuration or firmware support. Preview coloring alone does not cause a physical filament change.

How do I add a manual color change in OrcaSlicer?

OrcaSlicer adds a pause from the Preview layer slider. Its manual multimaterial workflow can use either M600 or PAUSE, depending on the printer profile.

  • 【Spool Diameter】- Spool Diameter: 8.00", Spool Width: 2.50", Spool Hub Hole Diameter: 2.20". The size of the SUNLU filament spool is suitable for hanging on many 3D printers.
  1. Slice the model and open Preview.
  2. Move to the layer that should be the first layer of the new color.
  3. Right-click the layer slider and choose Add Pause.
  4. Open the printer’s manual multimaterial settings and confirm whether the profile emits M600 or PAUSE.
  5. Check any configured timing or ramming behavior, then inspect the sliced preview around the transition.
  6. Export the file, run the pause, and purge until the new-color stream is clean before resuming.

Because the pause is before the selected layer, placing it on the last old-color layer changes the boundary. Re-slice after every marker adjustment and verify the command rather than relying on the color swatch in the preview.

How do I change colors manually on a printer without an automatic material system?

Use a slicer pause and treat the printer as a single-nozzle, operator-assisted workflow. Without automatic hardware, the operator supplies the unload, load, purge, and resume actions.

  1. Add a pause at the first layer of the new color in your slicer.
  2. Start the print and wait for the machine to stop before that layer.
  3. Unload the existing filament using the printer’s controls.
  4. Load the next color and extrude into a purge destination until the old color disappears.
  5. Remove the purge strand, confirm that the nozzle is flowing freely, and resume the print.

A manual workflow has more operator timing than an automatic multimaterial system. Keep the new spool ready before the pause and do not leave the nozzle parked hot for longer than your printer’s instructions allow.

Which workflow is better: automatic multimaterial hardware or manual changes?

The right choice depends on whether your printer can execute material changes reliably, how much waste and supervision you accept, and whether all colors use the same polymer family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Automatic multimaterial hardware Manual single-nozzle change
Change execution Printer or material unit performs the programmed tool or filament change. Operator must unload, load, purge, and resume at each pause.
Purge destination Typically uses a configured wipe or purge tower; exact availability depends on the slicer and hardware. Uses a wipe tower, wipe-to-infill/object, or a manually placed purge area.
Operator timing Lower during a long print once the system is configured. Higher; every scheduled change requires the operator to be present.
Transition sharpness Can be consistent when unload and purge parameters are tuned. Depends on how completely the operator purges and on the nozzle’s residual melt.
Waste Purge waste is still produced; the documented sources do not establish a universal percentage. Waste varies with the amount manually extruded and the chosen purge destination.
Material compatibility Hardware automation does not remove polymer-compatibility limits. Same-family swaps remain the safer default: PLA with PLA, PETG with PETG, and so on.

For occasional two-color parts, a manual pause is often sufficient if you can monitor the print. For repeated changes, automatic hardware can reduce intervention, but it still needs a correctly configured command path and a purge strategy.

How can I retest without wasting a full print?

Change one variable at a time and use a small two-color object. This isolates layer timing, command execution, purge cleanliness, and material compatibility before you commit to a large model.

  1. Slice a compact test with one clearly visible color boundary.
  2. Verify the marker and command in preview and generated G-code.
  3. Run the pause, unload/load cycle, and purge into the selected destination.
  4. Inspect the first new-color layer and the next few layers for streaks, weak adhesion, or a second unintended transition.
  5. If it fails, record which stage failed: no pause, wrong layer, contaminated extrusion, or adhesion/material problem.
  6. Adjust only that stage, then run the same test again.

No authoritative source establishes one universal purge length, missed-color frequency, or waste percentage. A continuous new-color extrusion and a successful small test are the appropriate acceptance checks for your particular nozzle, profile, colors, and printer.

What should I check before starting the final multicolor print?

  • The selected marker is on the first layer that should use the new color.
  • The sliced file contains the command your printer profile supports: M600, PAUSE, or the configured custom pause.
  • The printer actually pauses in a short test rather than merely displaying colors in preview.
  • The old filament unloads completely and the new filament feeds without grinding or slipping.
  • The nozzle extrudes a consistent new color before you resume.
  • A wipe tower, wipe-to-infill, or wipe-to-object destination is enabled when the model needs it.
  • Visible light-colored walls will not reveal dark purge material hidden in infill; add perimeters when necessary.
  • The filaments belong to compatible material families.
  • You have saved the final G-code and, if troubleshooting, a photograph of any defective wipe tower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the same G-code pause on one printer but not another?

The pause instruction is interpreted by the printer’s firmware and machine profile, not by the color assignment alone. Two printers can receive identical layer data while one maps M600 or PAUSE to a filament-change routine and the other ignores it or uses a different macro.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does changing layer height affect a color-change position?

Yes. A marker is attached to a sliced layer index, so changing layer height changes the physical height represented by that index. Re-slice the model and place the marker again whenever you alter layer-height settings.

Can previewing a painted color create a real filament-change command?

No. Preview colors describe how the slicer expects the model to look; they do not, by themselves, insert a pause or tool-change instruction. Add the appropriate layer command and verify it in the generated G-code.

What evidence is most useful when asking for printer or slicer support?

Provide the exact printer and profile, the sliced G-code, the layer at which the change was scheduled, and a clear photo of the transition or wipe tower. A tower defect in the center suggests unloading trouble, while an edge defect points toward insufficient purging after unload.
