Fix Claude API failures by treating the HTTP status and structured error body as the diagnosis. A 429 may be a temporary request, input-token, or output-token limit—or a spend cap that will not clear through retries. A 529 means the service is temporarily overloaded and calls for bounded backoff. A 504 timeout_error means processing exceeded the request window; use streaming or Message Batches for work that can run for a long time. Always preserve retry-after, rate-limit headers, and the request ID before changing code.
What do Claude API status codes and error bodies tell you?
Start with the response, not with a generic retry loop. Record the HTTP status, the top-level error type and message, any nested details, and the response headers. The same status can represent different remedies, especially HTTP 429.
| Status | Typical body value | Meaning | First response |
|---|---|---|---|
| 429 | rate_limit_error |
An organization limit or a usage-tier/workspace spend cap was reached. | Inspect retry-after, rate-limit headers, and error.details.error_code before deciding whether to wait or change account limits. |
| 529 | overloaded_error |
Anthropic’s API is temporarily overloaded. | Retry as a transient server failure with bounded exponential backoff; honor retry-after when present. |
| 504 | timeout_error |
Request processing timed out. | Move long work to Messages streaming or Message Batches and check for idle-connection timeouts in your network path. |
| 400 | Validation or account error | A custom spend limit can return 400 instead of 429. | Read the body and account settings; do not assume a 400 is a malformed prompt. |
Anthropic’s direct API documentation describes these meanings. Managed Claude endpoints on AWS or Google Cloud can apply their own quota, routing, and error behavior, so use the provider’s response contract when you are not calling Anthropic directly.

- Capture the complete response. Log the status, error type, message, nested details,
retry-after, all rate-limit headers, and the uniquerequest-idheader. Error bodies can also contain arequest_idfield. - Classify the failure. Separate request-rate pressure, input-token pressure, output-token pressure, spend-cap enforcement, overload, and processing timeout. A status-only metric hides these important differences.
- Compare your traffic with the live account limits. Check the organization’s Console values for requests per minute (RPM), input tokens per minute (ITPM), and output tokens per minute (OTPM). Published tier values are standard maxima, not guarantees for every evaluation account, model, or deployment.
- Check timing and traffic shape. Note whether failures occur in short bursts, after a large prompt, during unusually long generations, or only after a particular amount of monthly usage.
- Identify the execution model. For a request expected to run beyond ten minutes, decide whether the caller truly needs incremental output. If not, an asynchronous batch avoids keeping a network connection open.
- Use typed SDK exceptions. Catch the SDK’s status, rate-limit, timeout, and connection exception classes for the language and version you actually deploy. Do not branch on fragments of human-readable error messages.
Keep these records together for each attempt. A request ID lets Anthropic correlate your report with server logs, while the headers show what capacity the server advertised at that moment.

Why am I getting a 429 from the Claude API?
HTTP 429 covers more than a brief throttle. Anthropic documents it for organization rate limits, a monthly usage-tier spend cap, and certain Claude Code workspace spend limits. A custom spend limit may instead produce HTTP 400, so the error body and account settings determine the fix.
How do I tell a temporary rate limit from a spend-cap 429?
A temporary rate limit normally includes a retry-after header. Wait at least the indicated number of seconds; retries sent earlier can continue to fail. The response’s limit, remaining-capacity, and reset headers help show whether request, input-token, or output-token capacity is the constrained resource.
A tier spend-cap response has no retry-after. In a Messages API response, inspect error.details.error_code for enforced_spend_limit_reached. Automatic retries—including those performed by an SDK—will keep failing until access resumes or the limit is changed, so do not put this case in an unbounded retry loop. Review billing and usage in the Console, then request a higher tier or limit through the available account controls.
What does each Claude rate-limit dimension require me to change?
| Pressure shown by headers or usage | What it measures | Useful remediation |
|---|---|---|
| RPM | Requests per minute, including short-term burst enforcement. | Queue calls, cap concurrency, and smooth arrivals instead of releasing a large batch at once. |
| ITPM | Input tokens per minute. | Trim repeated context, reuse cached input where supported, and avoid sending unnecessary history on every call. |
| OTPM | Output tokens per minute. | Set an appropriate output-token ceiling, limit simultaneous generations, and schedule work rather than starting it all together. |
| Spend cap | Account or workspace monetary usage ceiling. | Check billing and usage, then change the applicable tier or spend limit; waiting and retrying alone will not restore access. |
Anthropic uses a continuously replenished token-bucket model. That means a nominal per-minute allowance can still reject a sharp burst even when your average requests per minute looks acceptable. A queue or distributed rate limiter should release work steadily, and retry schedules should include jitter so many workers do not wake up together.
How should a 429 retry loop behave?
Only retry a 429 after classifying it. For a rate-limit response with retry-after, sleep for the advertised interval and then re-check capacity. If the header is absent and the body identifies an enforced spend limit, stop automatic retries and surface an account-actionable error. For other transient limit responses, use a bounded exponential schedule with jitter and a maximum attempt count.

# Python-style pseudocode; use the typed exception names and fields
# supplied by the SDK version in your deployment.
try:
result = client.messages.create(**request)
except RateLimitException as exc:
headers = exc.response.headers
body = exc.response.json()
code = body.get('error', {}).get('details', {}).get('error_code')
retry_after = headers.get('retry-after')
if code == 'enforced_spend_limit_reached' and not retry_after:
raise AccountLimitError('Spend cap reached; do not retry automatically')
delay = parse_seconds(retry_after) if retry_after else backoff_with_jitter(attempt)
schedule_retry(delay)
Use the actual response object exposed by your SDK; field names and exception class names vary by language and release. The important behavior is to preserve the server’s wait instruction and to stop when the body identifies a persistent spend cap.
What does overloaded_error 529 mean?
HTTP 529 with overloaded_error means, in Anthropic’s wording, “The API is temporarily overloaded.” It is a transient service-side condition, not evidence that your prompt is invalid or that your account has exhausted its spend cap.
Retry with bounded exponential backoff. Honor retry-after if the response supplies it; otherwise calculate a delay that grows between attempts, add jitter, and enforce a maximum number of attempts and a total time budget. Anthropic’s documentation does not specify one universal 529 delay, so do not hard-code a supposedly official number.
The official SDKs automatically retry transient failures, including connection failures, rate limits, and server 5xx responses. The documented default is two retries, and callers can configure max_retries; exact behavior should be verified against the SDK language and version you ship. If your application also retries around the SDK, account for both layers or you may multiply attempts unexpectedly.
How do I stop Claude API requests from timing out?
A 504 timeout_error means processing did not finish within the API’s request window. Increasing only your client-side timeout cannot make the server process an overlong non-streaming request indefinitely. Redesign the interaction when the work is expected to be long-running.

When should I use Messages streaming?
Use streaming when the caller needs incremental text or event updates while generation continues. Anthropic recommends Messages streaming for long requests, particularly work expected to exceed ten minutes. Events can keep useful data moving through the connection instead of leaving one long request idle.
Streaming is not a guarantee of successful completion: the connection can still fail, the model can still return an error, and your code must handle partial events and a terminal failure. Persist the request context needed to decide whether a safe retry is possible, rather than assuming that reconnecting will resume at the exact token where a connection stopped.
When are Message Batches a better fit?
Use Message Batches when the caller does not need an uninterrupted connection or immediate incremental output. Submit the work asynchronously, then poll for batch status and retrieve results. This separates model processing from the lifetime of a browser, worker, proxy, or mobile connection and is often the safer design for large offline jobs.
| Choice | Best when | Connection model | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messages streaming | A user or downstream process needs output as it is generated. | One active stream carries incremental events. | You must handle disconnects, partial output, and a final completion or error. |
| Message Batches | Work can be submitted and collected later. | Submit and poll asynchronously; no continuously open request is required. | Results are not available as an interactive stream, so your workflow must tolerate polling and delayed completion. |
Could a network intermediary be causing the apparent timeout?
Yes. Proxies, load balancers, and firewalls may close an idle connection even when Anthropic has not returned a final response. The documentation warns that an idle network close can look like a timeout without a response from Anthropic. For direct API integrations, TCP socket keep-alive can reduce this risk on some networks, but it does not remove the server’s processing limit.
The official SDK validates that non-streaming Messages calls are not expected to exceed ten minutes and configures TCP keep-alive. Check intermediary idle-timeout settings, client read timeouts, and socket behavior separately so a local network failure is not misclassified as a 504 from the API.

How should I configure SDK retries without creating a retry storm?
Let the SDK handle its documented transient-retry behavior unless you have a reason to own the policy. Set its configurable max_retries deliberately, then make any outer retry layer aware of attempts already made inside the SDK. A request that receives a 429 spend-cap response should not be retried merely because the SDK can retry other 429 cases.
- Honor
retry-afterexactly when present, subject to a safety maximum appropriate for your job. - Use exponential backoff with jitter for transient 529 responses and rate-limit cases without a server-provided delay.
- Cap attempts and total elapsed time; send exhausted work to a queue or dead-letter path for inspection.
- Do not retry validation errors or a confirmed account spend cap.
- Make your operation idempotent where possible so a connection failure after server acceptance does not create duplicate business work.
Because SDK retry semantics can change between releases, test the version in your lockfile and expose attempt counts in logs. Keep the SDK’s request ID and your own job or correlation ID together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How can I reduce the chance of hitting limits?
Smooth request arrivals
Place calls behind a shared queue or limiter rather than allowing every web request, worker, and scheduled task to call the API independently. Enforce both a concurrency ceiling and a token-aware budget. Short bursts are significant because the token bucket replenishes continuously rather than resetting only at a minute boundary.
Control input and output tokens
Measure prompt and completion sizes per model and workload. Remove duplicated history, summarize stale context, and use cached input where the model’s pricing and limit rules support it. Set an output-token limit that matches the user’s need; unconstrained generations can consume output capacity and trigger OTPM pressure even when request count is low.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the account’s current limits, not a copied quota table
Rate limits and tiers can change. Evaluation accounts may differ from standard accounts, and limits can differ by model and deployment. The organization values visible in the Console are authoritative for your account at the time of the call; treat published values as guidance rather than a universal guarantee.

What should I log and send when contacting support?
- UTC timestamp and your application’s correlation or job ID.
- HTTP status, endpoint, model, and whether the call was streaming, non-streaming, or part of a batch.
- The complete structured error type, message, and details, with secrets and user data removed.
request-idfrom the response and anyrequest_idin the body.retry-afterplus rate-limit limit, remaining, and reset headers.- Attempt number, SDK name and version, client timeout, and whether an outer retry loop was active.
- Traffic shape at the time: concurrent workers, approximate input/output token volume, and whether failures followed a burst or a long-running request.
Request IDs are specifically useful when Anthropic investigates a failure. Redact API keys, authorization headers, personal data, and confidential prompt content before sharing logs.
What is a practical decision flow for each failure?
- Read the body and headers. Do not classify from the status code alone.
- If 429: find
retry-after. If it is present, treat the response as a temporary capacity limit and wait. If it is absent andenforced_spend_limit_reachedis present, stop retries and resolve the account limit. If neither is clear, compare RPM, ITPM, OTPM, and spend usage in the Console. - If 529: retry as a transient overload with bounded exponential backoff, honoring any server-provided delay.
- If 504: determine whether processing exceeded the expected window or an intermediary closed an idle connection. Move long interactive work to streaming and non-interactive work to Message Batches; review keep-alive and proxy settings.
- After any exhausted attempt: retain the request ID and structured diagnostics, then route the job for an account, traffic, or support decision instead of looping indefinitely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Claude API 429 disappear without changing my account?
Yes, when it represents temporary capacity pressure and the response supplies a wait interval; capacity can become available after that interval. A spend-cap response is different: its missing retry interval and enforced-spend-limit code indicate that retries will continue failing until access or the limit changes.
Will raising my client timeout fix a Claude 504?
No. A client timeout controls how long your program waits, while a 504 indicates that request processing exceeded the API’s processing window or that an intermediary closed an idle connection. Use streaming or asynchronous batches for long work and inspect proxy and keep-alive settings.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAre Claude limits the same when I use a cloud provider’s managed endpoint?
Not necessarily. AWS and Google Cloud managed Claude endpoints can impose provider-specific quotas, routing, and error formats. Apply the managed service’s documentation and headers to those calls rather than assuming the direct Anthropic API behavior.
What information helps Anthropic investigate a failed request?
Provide the response request ID, UTC time, endpoint and model, status and structured error details, relevant rate-limit headers, and your SDK version. Remove credentials and sensitive prompt data before sending logs.
