If Call of Duty is stuttering, crashing, or stuck on shader compilation, start with the game’s own prerequisites: leave Shader Preloading running at the Main Menu until it reaches 100%, then use a known-good graphics driver and repair the installation. After that, determine whether the problem is rendering, corrupted files, insufficient hardware, or network lag. The sequence below follows Activision’s Black Ops 6 troubleshooting guidance and separates fixes that can look identical in a match.
The instructions are written primarily for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation. Warzone can require additional storage and may have separate updates or known issues, so check the requirements for the exact mode and platform you use.

Identify what kind of problem you have
Use the symptom rather than the game’s error message to choose your first test. A rendering hitch can occur offline, while network stutter appears only when the game is exchanging data with a server.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you see | Most likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Brief freezes or uneven frame pacing in menus, campaign, or local play, especially after an update | Shader compilation, graphics driver, or game files | Return to the Main Menu and let Shader Preloading finish; then check the driver and repair files. |
| Your character freezes, then jumps forward; hit markers arrive late; other players teleport | Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi variation, or a congested connection | Test a wired connection and stop other heavy network use before changing graphics settings. |
| The game closes to the desktop or dashboard, locks up, or requires a restart | Driver conflict, damaged files, background software, overheating, overclocking, or a known issue | Restart, update the platform, repair files, close overlays, and check the known-issues list. |
| Shader Preloading remains at 0% or never completes | Interrupted first boot, driver problem, file corruption, or a process blocked by software | Keep the game at the Main Menu for a full attempt; if it fails repeatedly, follow the driver, repair, and conflict checks below. |
Activision defines online stuttering as an effect that makes a character appear to freeze and skip ahead while moving. That is different from a frame-rate hitch, which can happen with no network connection at all.

Finish Shader Preloading before playing
What the first boot process does
Black Ops 6 compiles shaders during its first boot and after some driver, game, or content changes. Activision calls Shader Preloading an important part of first boot and advises allowing it to complete before attempting to play. Stay on the Main Menu; navigating to another screen stops the preload and can create performance problems later.
- Start the game after installing it or applying a major update.
- Remain on the Main Menu. Do not launch a match, enter another menu, or suspend the application while the preload indicator is active.
- Keep the computer or console powered and connected until the process reports completion.
- Only then enter a mode and judge frame pacing.
The first pass can take a while on a slower CPU, storage device, or after a large content update. Repeatedly canceling at 0% does not make compilation progress; it restarts the condition that caused the hitching.
If preloading is stuck at 0%
First restart the game and repeat the uninterrupted Main Menu wait once. If the indicator repeatedly stops, treat it as a system problem rather than a prompt to keep restarting. Continue with the graphics-driver baseline, launcher file repair, background-software checks, and hardware checks in the next sections. A successful preload does not repair damaged files or compensate for an unsupported GPU.

For Black Ops 6 graphical problems, Activision lists specific driver versions as a baseline. These are reference versions, not a promise that every later release is compatible. If a newer driver coincides with the start of your crashes or severe hitching, Activision advises rolling back to the listed version.

| GPU vendor | Activision-listed Black Ops 6 baseline | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | 566.03 | Install this version when testing a graphics problem; roll back from a newer release if the newer release introduced the symptom. |
| AMD | 25.5.1 | Use the listed package as a troubleshooting baseline, particularly when crashes began after a driver update. |
| Intel | 32.0.101.6790 | Use this version as the comparison point for graphics-related failures. |
Keep Windows 10 or Windows 11 current. Activision notes that the latest Windows 11 version greatly improves stability with NVIDIA hardware. A driver rollback is reversible; record the current version first so you can return to it after testing.
Driver-change checklist
- Download the package for the exact GPU model and Windows edition.
- Close the game and other GPU-intensive applications before installing.
- Restart Windows after installation, even if the installer does not insist.
- Run Shader Preloading again from the Main Menu before evaluating performance.
- If the listed baseline does not help, reinstall the current driver rather than repeatedly switching versions.
Repair the game files in your launcher
A failed patch, interrupted download, or damaged shader-related file can cause crashes at launch or in public Multiplayer. Use the repair function for the launcher that owns your installation.
Battle.net
- Open the Call of Duty page in Battle.net.
- Open the options menu next to the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair.
- Allow the scan to finish and download any replacement files.
- Restart the launcher, start the game, and let Shader Preloading complete.
Steam
- Open your Library and select Call of Duty.
- Open Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace missing or corrupt data.
- Disable programs that interfere with Steam while testing, then restart the game.
Xbox app for Windows or Microsoft Store
- Open the Xbox app or Windows Settings entry for the game.
- Select Manage, then open the Files section.
- Choose Verify and Repair.
- After the repair, reboot Windows and perform a complete shader preload.
File verification does not increase a GPU’s performance and cannot fix a bad network route. Its purpose is to establish a known-good installation before you investigate harder-to-reverse changes.

Remove software conflicts and unstable tuning
Close overlays and background applications
Temporarily close overlay, capture, hardware-monitoring, peripheral-control, and other background applications. Activision specifically recommends closing background apps and updating peripheral or device-control drivers when Black Ops 6 crashes. Test with only the launcher and game running so that an overlay hook is not mistaken for a game fault.

Use a Windows clean boot when ordinary closing is not enough
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential startup services disabled. It is useful when the game works on a newly started system but crashes after other software loads. Re-enable services in groups after the test to identify the conflict; do not leave security software permanently disabled.
Check security and memory-protection settings
If you previously disabled Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), re-enable it. Activision lists disabled ASLR as a condition to correct during troubleshooting. Antivirus products can also quarantine or scan game files at the wrong time. Add the game folder to an exception only through the antivirus vendor’s documented procedure, and remove the exception if it does not change the symptom.
Turn off overclocking while diagnosing
Return CPU, GPU, and memory settings to their stock values. Activision says overclocking and tuning software can conflict with Black Ops 6. A setting that is stable in another game can still fail during shader compilation or a particular Multiplayer workload. Once the game is stable at stock settings, change one setting at a time if you choose to test performance tuning again.
Check the Black Ops 6 PC hardware baseline
Insufficient hardware can look like stutter, texture failure, or a crash under load. Activision’s published specifications are a baseline for the desktop version and may be updated. They call for an SSD, not a hard-disk installation, and Warzone can require additional space.

Storage checks
- Confirm that the drive is an SSD and has at least 102 GB free for the launch requirement; updates need working space beyond the installed size.
- Check the drive’s interface and form factor before buying replacement storage. A SATA drive cannot be installed in an M.2-only slot, and an M.2 drive must match the motherboard’s supported key and protocol.
- Leave additional free capacity for patches, shader caches, and other installed modes.
- An SSD can reduce asset-streaming delays, but it will not by itself fix shader crashes, a failing GPU, or packet loss.
If your system is below the minimum GPU, RAM, DirectX, or operating-system requirement, software troubleshooting may not produce stable results. Upgrade only after completing the reversible driver and file checks.

Signs of a rendering problem
Rendering stutter can occur in menus, campaign, or a private offline test. The image hitches while audio and network indicators remain normal. It often follows a driver or content update and may improve after Shader Preloading completes, a driver rollback, or file repair.
Signs of an online connection problem
Network stutter appears as rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, or a character that freezes and then skips ahead. Activision attributes lag to latency, packet loss, bandwidth contention, and Wi-Fi variability. Latency is the round-trip time for data, measured in milliseconds; geographic distance and ISP routing affect it, so a faster graphics card cannot lower the route’s ping.
Network fixes in the right order
- Stop downloads, cloud synchronization, video or music streaming, and gameplay broadcasting on the connection.
- Connect the gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet when possible. Activision notes that Wi-Fi varies widely in reliability and bandwidth; a cable can remove that variable.
- Restart the router and modem, then retest at a different time to distinguish local congestion from an ISP or route problem.
- If your router supports Quality of Service (QoS), prioritize the gaming device or game traffic. QoS can manage contention inside your home but cannot guarantee a fixed ping or repair a poor ISP route.
- Test another network, such as a phone hotspot, only as a diagnostic comparison. A different result points toward the original network rather than the game renderer.
An Ethernet cable addresses Wi-Fi variability; it does not repair shader compilation, corrupted files, or an underpowered GPU.

Recover from crashes on Xbox and PlayStation
Xbox console steps
- Install the latest console system update.
- Close and restart Call of Duty; if the console has been running for a long time, perform a full restart.
- Keep the console in a cool, well-ventilated location and clear dust from its vents.
- Clear the console cache. If the problem continues, clear the alternate MAC address through the network settings and restart when prompted.
- Remove other running applications and retest before reinstalling the game.
Third-party console hardware is not guaranteed to function with the game, so disconnect unsupported accessories while diagnosing.
PlayStation steps
- Update the console system software.
- Restart the console and the game after a CE-34878-0 or another application/system error.
- Ensure adequate ventilation and avoid playing while the console is enclosed or unusually hot.
- Delete unnecessary old files or game data when storage corruption is suspected, keeping backups of saved data that are not synchronized.
- Reinstall only after updates, ventilation, restart, and data cleanup have been tested.
Handle launch and public-Multiplayer crashes
Activision reports that PC crashes commonly occur at launch or in public Multiplayer. Use this order so that each step leaves the next test easier to interpret.
- Restart Windows and the launcher.
- Confirm that Windows, the launcher, and the graphics driver are current, or test the Activision-listed driver baseline if the crash began after an update.
- Run the launcher’s repair procedure.
- Close overlays, peripheral utilities, capture tools, and other background applications.
- Disable overclocking and tuning software; re-enable ASLR if it was disabled.
- Check CPU/GPU temperatures and ventilation during a short test.
- Run a clean boot if the crash disappears when background services are absent.
- Repeat Shader Preloading from the Main Menu before entering public Multiplayer.
Keep notes on the exact mode, map, activity, error code, driver version, and whether the crash occurs offline. Those details make a support report actionable and help distinguish a local installation from a server-side issue.

Activision maintains a Known Issues page listing problems that are identified, under investigation, or scheduled for a fix. Check it before deleting the game or replacing hardware. The tracker’s July 10, 2026 update records resolved crashes involving AMD RX 400/RX 500 graphics and AMD Zombies play, among other fixes; a resolved entry means the service has recorded a fix, not that every installation is automatically repaired.
If your symptom is not listed, submit Activision’s Call of Duty PC Crash Report with the requested system and failure details. Include the launcher, operating-system version, GPU and driver version, when the crash occurs, whether Shader Preloading completed, and the repair steps already attempted. For console failures, use the platform’s support path after applying the update, restart, ventilation, cache or data steps above.
A practical escalation checklist
- Shader or frame hitch: complete Shader Preloading, apply the driver baseline, repair files, then test at stock hardware settings.
- Stuck at 0%: stop interrupting the Main Menu preload; if it still fails, treat drivers, files, background software, and hardware as the likely causes.
- Rubber-banding or delayed hits: investigate latency, packet loss, bandwidth use, Wi-Fi, and routing; graphics changes will not fix it.
- Launch or Multiplayer crash: update, restart, repair, close conflicts, disable overclocking, and check the Known Issues page.
- Below minimum specification: address the SSD, RAM, GPU, operating-system, or DirectX gap before expecting software fixes to hold.
These checks prioritize reversible, official actions before hardware replacement or a full reinstall. Activision does not publish a controlled success rate for any individual fix, so judge the result by whether the original symptom disappears in a repeatable test.
