Fix Modern Warfare 4 in this order: confirm the required Windows, security, CPU, GPU, memory, and SSD configuration; update Windows and the graphics driver; reboot into a clean baseline without overlays or capture tools; complete shader delivery or compilation; then use the built-in benchmark to tune one setting at a time. If movement freezes and jumps, hit markers arrive late, or rubber-banding occurs, troubleshoot the network separately instead of lowering graphics quality.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
Modern Warfare 4 can appear to “stutter” for very different reasons. A repeatable crash to desktop, a long shader wait, uneven frame delivery, and an online character that freezes and then catches up need different fixes. Start by matching what you see to the category below.
| What you see | Most likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The game closes during startup or in a public Multiplayer match | System requirement, driver, background software, overheating, or a game fault | Confirm the requirements, update Windows and the GPU driver, then launch with overlays and capture tools closed |
| Frames are uneven, the camera hitches, or input feels inconsistent while offline | Rendering load, shader compilation, CPU/GPU contention, or thermal throttling | Run the built-in benchmark and compare average FPS, CPU, GPU, and input-latency readings |
| Your character freezes, skips forward, hit markers arrive late, or you snap back after moving | Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, or a busy home connection | Test wired Ethernet and stop other large uploads, downloads, and streams |
| A first launch or post-update launch spends a long time preparing shaders | Shader delivery, driver cache, or a required recompile after a patch | Allow the process to finish, use Advanced Shader Delivery where supported, and avoid repeatedly interrupting it |
Activision defines network “stuttering” as an effect that makes your character appear to freeze and skip ahead while moving. That is not the same as a low or unstable render frame rate: a graphics setting cannot repair packet loss between your connection and the game server.
Check the official PC requirements first
Do this before reducing quality settings or reinstalling. The requirements page checked on October 19, 2026 lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, an Intel or AMD processor with AVX support, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and an SSD. At launch, reserve at least 115 GB of free SSD space; mandatory updates can require additional room. A nearly full drive can also make updates, shader caches, and temporary files fail even when the headline number appears to fit.

Verify Windows, DirectX, AVX, TPM, and Secure Boot
- Open Settings > System > About and confirm that Windows is 64-bit. Install pending updates from Settings > Windows Update, then restart.
- Press
Win+R, enterdxdiag, and check the System tab for DirectX 12. The Display tabs show the installed GPU and driver. - Confirm that your CPU is an Intel or AMD model with AVX support. A CPU that lacks AVX cannot be made compatible with a graphics preset.
- For security prerequisites, open Windows Security > Device security and check TPM status and Secure Boot. Firmware menus differ by motherboard; do not change boot mode without understanding whether Windows is installed as UEFI.
Make room on the SSD
Keep more than the 115 GB launch requirement free so an update can download, unpack, and replace files. If the game is on a hard disk, move it to an SSD before diagnosing stutter. The requirement is for free space at launch, not a promise that every update will fit inside the same amount.
Build a clean launch baseline
Many PC crashes occur while launching or while playing public Multiplayer matches. Establish a controlled baseline so a third-party process is not mistaken for a game defect.
- Install all available Windows updates, restart, and let any pending restart complete before opening the game.
- Install the GPU driver recommended on the current requirements page. The page checked October 19, 2026 listed AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. NVIDIA 616.56 was identified as an Advanced Shader Delivery-compatible driver announced for October 21, so check the live requirements information if you install after that date.
- Close overlays and capture software before launching. This includes chat overlays, performance overlays, streaming or recording tools, RGB or hardware-monitoring utilities that inject into games, and input-remapping software.
- Exit browsers, game launchers you do not need, synchronisation clients, and other heavy background applications. Do not disable security software permanently; if you test an exception, use only the game’s official installation and restore protection afterward.
- Restart the PC after the driver installation. A driver that is downloaded but not loaded until reboot does not provide a useful test.
- On a laptop, connect AC power, select the manufacturer’s performance mode, and make sure the game is assigned to the discrete GPU. Keep vents clear and avoid testing on a soft surface.
Watch temperatures and clocks
Heat can produce both crashes and intermittent frame-time spikes. Monitor CPU and GPU temperature, clock speed, and utilization while reproducing the issue. If clocks fall sharply as temperatures rise, improve airflow, clean dust filters, raise the fan curve within safe manufacturer limits, or reduce power and graphics load. Do not treat an overheated system as a shader problem.

Remove persistent software conflicts
If a clean launch works but the normal launch crashes, re-enable background programs one group at a time. The program that restores the crash is a stronger lead than a random setting change. Pay particular attention to anything that draws over the game, records frames, changes controller or keyboard input, or applies GPU tuning.
Handle shader compilation and Advanced Shader Delivery
Shaders translate visual effects into code your graphics driver can execute. A patch, driver change, graphics-option change, or cleared driver cache can require preparation again. During that period, the game may wait at launch or hitch while an effect is compiled. Repeatedly force-closing the game can leave the process incomplete and make the next launch start over.
Use Advanced Shader Delivery when your platform supports it
Call of Duty Staff describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as delivering precompiled shaders ahead of time across supported PC platforms so Modern Warfare 4 can launch faster. The Xbox PC app is required to use ASD where support is available. Install or update that app, launch the supported PC version through it, and allow the delivery process to finish before judging startup behavior.

ASD is a delivery improvement, not a guarantee that every hitch disappears. A driver mismatch, damaged cache, new patch, or unsupported platform can still require local compilation or an Activision report. If shader preparation appears stuck, wait through one uninterrupted attempt with the PC connected to power and the SSD having free space. Then restart once, confirm the driver, and test again rather than repeatedly cancelling the task.

When shader work causes in-game hitching
- Run the first post-update session in a low-risk mode, such as a private or practice environment, so you can observe frame times without affecting a public match.
- Keep the driver consistent while testing. Changing driver versions between launches can invalidate the cache and create another compilation cycle.
- Do not promise a fixed compilation duration: Activision has not published an average shader-compilation time or a universal reduction for every PC.
- If the game still hitches after an uninterrupted preparation pass, record the driver version, GPU, system memory, storage type, and the exact map or effect that triggers it for a crash or bug report.
Measure performance with the built-in benchmark
Modern Warfare 4 includes a benchmark that reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping, and input latency and suggests settings. Use it as a repeatable baseline instead of guessing from a single busy firefight. Activision advertises more than 800 customization options, so a single “best” preset cannot suit every resolution, refresh rate, and latency preference.
- Finish shader preparation, close unrelated applications, and use the same display resolution and refresh rate you normally play with.
- Run the benchmark without changing settings. Record average FPS, the CPU and GPU readings, ping, and input latency. If the tool shows a recommendation, treat it as a starting point, not a promise of a particular result.
- Change one setting or one small group with a common purpose. For example, test ray tracing separately from texture quality, upscaling, or frame generation.
- Run the benchmark again and compare both average FPS and frame-time consistency. A higher average with worse input latency or visible spikes may be a poor trade for competitive play.
- Keep a setting only when it solves the limiting metric without unacceptable image-quality or latency cost. Save the working configuration before testing another change.
Read the benchmark bottleneck
| Benchmark pattern | Likely limit | Useful next test |
|---|---|---|
| GPU utilization is high, CPU headroom remains, and FPS rises when resolution or heavy effects are reduced | GPU workload | Lower ray tracing or the most expensive effects; compare upscaling options while checking image clarity |
| CPU time is high while GPU load is moderate | CPU workload, background activity, or a simulation-heavy scene | Close background programs, check temperatures and clocks, and reduce CPU-heavy view or simulation options if available |
| Average FPS looks acceptable but input latency or frame pacing is poor | Queueing, frame-generation trade-offs, driver behavior, or inconsistent frame delivery | Test frame generation and latency-related options one at a time; prioritize stable frame times for competitive play |
| Ping changes while graphics metrics remain stable | Network path rather than rendering | Use the network checks in the next section |
Reduce render stutter without destroying image quality
Once the benchmark identifies a rendering limit, make targeted changes. Start with the most expensive feature shown by the benchmark rather than dropping every setting to Low. Ray tracing can consume substantial GPU time; test it separately so you know what you gained. Upscaling can recover performance at a lower internal resolution, but inspect fine geometry and text for artifacts. Frame generation can increase displayed smoothness while adding a latency or frame-pacing trade-off on some systems, so judge it with the benchmark’s input-latency reading and your own controls.

- Set a frame-rate cap that your system can sustain rather than chasing brief peaks. A stable cap can reduce oscillation between CPU and GPU limits.
- Keep textures within available video memory. If texture streaming or allocation warnings appear, reduce texture quality or close memory-heavy applications before lowering unrelated options.
- After a major driver or game update, rerun the benchmark. A prior setting can become a different workload when shaders or effects change.
Separate network lag from graphics stutter
Activision associates rubber-banding, skipped movement, delayed hit markers, and a character that freezes then jumps ahead with latency or packet loss. Ping is strongly affected by your internet service provider and geographic distance to the server. Lowering shadows or resolution cannot repair a congested route.
Test the connection in a controlled order
- Switch from Wi-Fi to wired Ethernet for one or more matches. A direct cable removes radio interference and many distance-related variations between the PC and router.
- Pause household streaming, cloud backups, large downloads, and uploads. A saturated upstream connection can cause delay even when a speed test reports a high headline rate.
- Restart the router and modem according to the manufacturer’s normal procedure. Check whether other devices lose connectivity at the same time.
- Enable router Quality of Service (QoS) if your router supports it, prioritizing the gaming PC or console while leaving enough capacity for essential traffic.
- Compare ping and packet-loss indicators in the game with the benchmark and with another match. A stable FPS reading alongside changing ping points away from the graphics engine.
Recognize a mixed problem
You can have both render and network issues. If the camera hitches in a private offline test and the character also rubber-bands online, fix the rendering baseline first, then repeat the wired test. Keep separate notes for average FPS, frame pacing, ping, and packet loss; combining them into one “lag” number hides the cause.

The game crashes before the menu
- Recheck the 64-bit Windows, DirectX 12, AVX, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, GPU, memory, and SSD requirements.
- Install the current Windows and GPU-driver updates, restart, and launch with overlays, recorders, remappers, and monitoring injectors closed.
- Confirm the SSD has the required 115 GB free plus update headroom. A failed update or incomplete shader delivery can look like a startup crash.
- Keep the system cool and test without overclocking or undervolting. Return CPU and GPU settings to stable defaults while diagnosing.
The game crashes in public Multiplayer
Activision says most PC crashes occur during launch or while playing public Multiplayer matches. Reproduce the problem after the clean-baseline steps and note the map, mode, time, driver, GPU, and whether the crash follows a shader or settings change. Avoid changing several settings between matches; otherwise the report cannot identify a trigger.

A crash returns after an update
First check Activision’s running known-issues page. Issues can be platform-specific and may be addressed without a graphics-setting change. On October 16, 2026, that page listed an Xbox-on-PC Campaign launch-button issue as addressed and directed players with unlisted problems to the bug-report form. The status can change after patches, so read the current entry that matches your platform.
When to submit a report
If requirements, updates, a clean launch, thermals, shader preparation, and a controlled benchmark do not resolve the fault, submit Activision’s PC Crash Report. Include the crash time, game mode, exact symptom, Windows version, CPU and GPU models, system memory, driver version, storage type, whether ASD was used, and which background programs were closed. For an unlisted problem, use the official bug-report form from the known-issues page. A precise timeline and reproducible trigger are more useful than a general statement that the game “lags.”
Driver versions, supported platforms, known issues, and storage requirements can change with patches. Recheck the current Activision requirements, crash-support, shader-delivery, and known-issues information whenever you update the game or troubleshoot a new failure.
