Fix Modern Warfare 4 campaign problems in this order: update the game and your platform, verify the PC requirements, install Activision’s listed graphics drivers, close overlays and input-remapping or recording tools, allow shaders to finish, then lower rendering load and test with the built-in benchmark. If the symptom is rubber-banding or delayed hit markers, troubleshoot the network instead of changing campaign graphics settings.
First, identify the failure you are seeing
The fastest fix depends on whether the game is failing to start, stopping during a mission, missing or corrupting textures, or simply delivering uneven frame times. Use this symptom map before changing several settings at once.
| Symptom | Most relevant checks |
|---|---|
| Crash before the campaign menu or during launch | Game and platform updates, PC requirements, graphics driver, conflicting overlays or remapping tools, and shader preparation |
| Freeze or crash in the middle of a mission | Driver and software conflicts first, then rendering load, available storage, and known-issues status |
| Hitching, pauses, or uneven frame delivery | Shader completion, texture and ray-tracing load, upscaler selection, and the built-in benchmark |
| Blurry, missing, or late-loading textures | Graphics driver, texture quality, ray tracing, shader preparation, and whether the PC meets the VRAM tier |
| Rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, or online stutter | Ethernet, packet loss, latency, Quality of Service (QoS), and competing network traffic; these are connectivity symptoms rather than offline campaign rendering defects |
Activision Support says most PC crashes occur while launching the game or while playing public Multiplayer matches. That statement is not a diagnosis for every campaign crash, but it is why launch checks and software-conflict checks belong at the top of the sequence.
Run the official fix sequence
Apply the steps in order and retest the same campaign checkpoint after each major change. This makes it clear which intervention helped and avoids masking one problem with several unrelated settings changes.

1. Update Modern Warfare 4 and the platform
- Install every available Modern Warfare 4 update from the launcher or console game library.
- On Xbox and PlayStation, install pending system software updates, then restart the console before launching the campaign.
- On Switch 2, choose a full power-off and restart rather than relying on Sleep Mode. The restart matters because Sleep Mode may leave a failed game process or stale graphics state in memory.
- After updating, launch the campaign without changing graphics settings first. If it now works, the original fault was likely tied to an outdated build or platform state.
Do not treat an update as a substitute for the PC checks below. A current game can still crash when the computer misses a required security feature, driver, memory tier, or storage condition.
Check every PC requirement before tuning graphics
Activision’s 2026 PC requirements list DirectX 12, an AVX-capable Intel or AMD processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and an SSD with 115 GB available at launch. Meeting only the processor and graphics-card names is not enough: the operating-system, firmware, storage, memory, and VRAM gates also matter.
| Target tier | Operating system and CPU | Memory | Graphics examples | Other listed detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 64-bit; Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | 8 GB RAM | Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 970 or GTX 1060, or Intel Arc A580; 3 GB VRAM | DirectX 12, AVX-capable CPU, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and SSD storage are required |
| Recommended 90-FPS/high | Windows 11; Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700 | 16 GB RAM | Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, or Intel Arc B580; 8 GB VRAM | Activision’s stated target is 90 FPS |
| Ray-tracing, 4K-upscaled | Processor and operating-system details are not stated in the listed tier | 32 GB RAM | Radeon RX 9070 XT or GeForce RTX 5070 Ti-class GPU; 16 GB VRAM | Designed for ray tracing with 4K upscaling |
Verify storage and memory
- Install the game on an SSD, not a nearly full mechanical drive.
- Keep at least the launch requirement of 115 GB available on that SSD. A drive that is technically large enough but almost full can also leave Windows and the game without working room for updates and caches.
- Check installed RAM against the tier you are targeting. The minimum, recommended, and ray-tracing tiers are separate performance gates rather than interchangeable labels.
Verify Windows and firmware security features
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and supports the tier you intend to use.
- Check that DirectX 12 is available and that the processor supports AVX.
- In your motherboard firmware, confirm TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled. If either is disabled, a game that otherwise appears to meet the hardware list can still fail its launch checks.
If your PC is below the minimum VRAM or RAM tier, graphics changes may reduce load but cannot turn it into a supported configuration. Treat the requirement check as the first gate, not as an optional optimization.

Activision’s 2026 guidance names these driver versions for graphical issues:
Rank #2
- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
| GPU maker | Listed driver |

Install the package matching your GPU, restart Windows, and test the campaign before adding third-party tuning utilities. If a driver installer offers a clean-install option, use it when the problem began immediately after a previous driver change; otherwise, first try the listed current package without making several additional changes.
Remove software that can block boot or destabilize play
Activision specifically warns that third-party input-remapping software, overlays, and recording software may interfere with gameplay or disrupt the boot process. Close these tools completely, including their background processes, and retry.
- Disable overlays supplied by chat, GPU, performance-monitoring, or storefront applications.
- Exit screen recorders, instant-replay tools, and capture utilities.
- Quit input remappers, controller-mapping layers, macro tools, and virtual-device software.
- Do not re-enable everything at once. Restore one tool at a time only after the campaign is stable so you can identify the conflict.
If the game launches only after these programs are closed, keep them disabled for campaign sessions or configure an exception where the software supports one. The publisher’s warning covers both crashes during play and failures in the boot process.
Let Advanced Shader Delivery finish
Modern Warfare 4 supports Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD), which Call of Duty staff describe as delivering precompiled shaders ahead of time on supported PC platforms so the game can launch faster. Shader work that is incomplete or repeatedly rebuilt can appear as long first launches, camera hitches, or texture and frame-time irregularities.
Rank #3
- PCIe 4.0 Performance: Delivers up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write speeds for quicker game load times, bootups, and smooth multitasking
- Spacious 1TB SSD: Provides space for AAA games, apps, and media with standard Gen4 NVMe performance for casual gamers and home users
- Broad Compatibility: Works seamlessly with laptops, desktops, and select gaming consoles including ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, and AYANEO Kun. Also backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 systems for flexible upgrades
- Better Productivity: Up to 2x faster than previous Gen3 generation. Improve performance for real world tasks like booting Windows, starting applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and working in applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Trusted Micron Quality: Built with advanced G8 NAND and thermal control for reliable Gen4 performance trusted by gamers and home users
- Install the Xbox PC app if you want to use ASD on a supported PC platform.
- Start the game and allow shader delivery or shader preparation to complete. Do not skip the process simply because the menu is available.
- Keep the graphics driver current while shaders are being prepared; Activision’s guidance specifically says not to skip current drivers.
- After a driver or major game update, allow the shader process to run again if the game requests it.
Shader preparation is not a guaranteed cure for a crash caused by missing requirements or conflicting software, but it is the official launch and frame-time tool and should be completed before judging stutter.
Reduce rendering load without guessing
When the game starts but stutters or produces texture glitches, change the settings that consume the most GPU time and VRAM first. These are documented options, not guaranteed cures for every fault.
Start with texture quality and ray tracing
- Lower texture quality one step and replay the same scene.
- Disable ray tracing temporarily, especially if you are below the ray-tracing tier in the requirements table.
- Retest before changing several other options. If the artifact or hitch disappears, raise settings one at a time until you find the stable ceiling.
Lower textures can reduce VRAM pressure; disabling ray tracing reduces the most demanding lighting work. Neither setting repairs a defective driver or replaces missing VRAM, so keep the driver and requirement checks in place.
Use an official upscaler
Modern Warfare 4 documents support for DLSS 4.5, FSR Redstone, XeSS 3, and SMAA T2X. Select the option supported by your GPU, begin with a quality-oriented preset, and compare the result in the benchmark rather than relying on the menu preview alone. Upscaling can improve frame time by rendering internally at a lower resolution, but aggressive modes may make textures look softer.

Measure with the built-in benchmark
Use the game’s benchmark after each meaningful graphics change. It reports FPS, CPU and GPU load, ping, and input latency. Record the settings and the result for the same test run.
- If GPU load and frame time fall after reducing textures, ray tracing, or output resolution, the problem is likely rendering pressure.
- If CPU time is the limiting figure while GPU load is low, lowering image quality may have little effect; close background tools and use the recommended CPU tier as your reference.
- If ping changes while offline scene rendering remains stable, investigate the network separately rather than continuing to lower graphics quality.
Keep network lag separate from campaign rendering stutter
Activision describes rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, and online stutter as lag symptoms. Those signs point to connectivity, not necessarily to a campaign texture or shader defect.
- Connect the gaming PC or console by wired Ethernet for a comparison test.
- Enable or review router QoS so game traffic is not crowded out by downloads, streaming, or cloud backups.
- Pause competing traffic on the local network and repeat the same test.
- Check for packet loss and latency while the symptom occurs. A clean frame-time result with unstable ping indicates a network path problem.
These steps target online connectivity. They will not repair missing offline assets, a driver crash, or a PC that fails the storage, VRAM, firmware, or memory requirements.
Platform-specific recovery checks
PC
Complete the requirement, driver, conflict, shader, and benchmark sequence above. If the game crashes only when an overlay, recorder, or remapper is active, leave that application disabled while you test. If it still fails with supported hardware, current drivers, completed shaders, and no conflicting software, move to the known-issues and crash-report step.

Xbox and PlayStation
Install the game and system updates, then perform a full restart before trying the campaign again. On Xbox, also check the current known-issues tracker for campaign-menu or platform-specific faults; a resolved Xbox-on-PC missing Campaign button issue is an example of a problem that cannot be fixed by changing texture quality.
Switch 2
Use a complete power-off and restart rather than Sleep Mode when a campaign launch or resume fails. Then install any available game or system update and retry the same mission.
Check known issues and submit a crash report
Known issues change as patches roll out. Activision’s tracker records resolved problems, including an Xbox-on-PC case where the Campaign button was missing, and links to crash-report forms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the current official known-issues tracker for Modern Warfare 4.
- Search for your platform and symptom, including launch crash, campaign freeze, texture corruption, or missing Campaign access.
- Read the status and workaround exactly as listed; do not assume a workaround for one platform applies to another.
- If the documented sequence above does not resolve the problem, submit the crash report with your platform, hardware tier, driver version, mission, and the exact point of failure.
Include whether the crash happens at launch or mid-mission, whether overlays and recording tools were closed, whether shader preparation completed, and what the benchmark reported. Those details distinguish a reproducible game defect from a local configuration problem.
When a hardware or storage change is justified
Use an upgrade only after software checks identify a clear limit. An SSD replacement or additional free space addresses the storage gate; more RAM addresses a memory-tier shortfall; a GPU with more VRAM addresses texture pressure. Buying hardware will not fix a known platform bug, a disabled Secure Boot setting, or an overlay conflict.
- If the installation cannot meet the SSD-space requirement, free space or move the game to a suitable SSD before troubleshooting visual settings.
- If the system has only the minimum RAM while targeting the recommended 90-FPS/high tier, expect that the higher tier is not supported by memory alone.
- If texture problems persist after lowering textures and completing shaders, compare your GPU’s VRAM with the applicable tier rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
A short decision checklist
- Crashes before the menu: update the game and platform, verify DirectX 12, AVX, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, SSD space, RAM, and VRAM, then install the listed driver and remove overlays, remappers, and recorders.
- Freezes during a mission: repeat the software-conflict and driver checks, complete shader delivery, lower rendering load, and check the known-issues tracker.
- Stutter after launch: let shaders finish, use an official upscaler, disable ray tracing or lower textures, and compare CPU, GPU, FPS, ping, and input latency in the benchmark.
- Blurry or missing textures: check VRAM tier, driver version, shader status, and texture quality before changing unrelated settings.
- Rubber-banding or delayed hit markers: test Ethernet, QoS, competing traffic, packet loss, and latency; do not treat this as a campaign rendering problem.
What to do if nothing works
Once the game is updated, the PC or console is restarted, requirements are satisfied, the listed driver is installed, conflicting software is closed, shaders are complete, and rendering or network tests have been separated, stop making random setting changes. Check the official tracker for a matching issue and submit the crash report. Known issues can change quickly, and a report is the appropriate next step when the documented local fixes do not reproduce a stable campaign.
