Start by checking speaker wiring and polarity, then compare the cabinet’s net internal volume—and, for a ported box, its port dimensions and tuning—with the exact driver manufacturer’s recommendations. A boomy or weak-sounding bass response can point to an enclosure mismatch, but listening alone cannot prove that is the cause.
Why a mismatched enclosure can sound boomy
A speaker driver and its enclosure work as a system. The driver’s Thiele-Small parameters help predict how its frequency response will change in different enclosures, so a cabinet that is too large, too small, or incorrectly tuned can produce a response different from the intended design. Eminence explains enclosure design and port behavior in its FAQ and design material; use the exact driver’s specifications rather than choosing a box by woofer diameter.
A narrow range of notes that seems unusually prominent, ringing, or “one note” bass may suggest a response peak or port-tuning issue. Loose bass can also be associated with unsuitable tuning. These are clues, not a diagnosis: wiring, placement, room or vehicle acoustics, amplifier settings, and crossover settings can also affect what you hear.
Check wiring and polarity before changing the box
Verify that each channel and driver is connected consistently, with positive and negative terminals correctly matched. Inspect the connections for loose or reversed wires. Dayton Audio’s manual lists out-of-phase stereo wiring as one possible cause of poor bass response (DATS LA Manual).

If correcting a wiring fault restores the bass, there may be no reason to rebuild the enclosure. If the symptom remains, proceed to identifying and measuring the cabinet.
Identify the driver and measure the usable box volume
Find the exact driver model
Record the manufacturer and full model number, then look up its recommended enclosure type, net volume, and—if ported—tuning and port requirements. Thiele-Small parameters can inform enclosure design, but the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance is the practical starting point.

Measure net internal volume, not external size
Measure the cabinet’s internal dimensions to estimate its gross volume. Then subtract the volume displaced by the speaker, port, bracing, and other objects inside the cabinet. The remaining usable air space is the net volume. Eminence describes this distinction in its enclosure guidance.
For a rectangular cabinet, multiply internal height, width, and depth using consistent units, then convert to the units used in the driver specifications. Do not compare external dimensions directly with a recommended net-volume figure.

Measure port dimensions when the box is vented
Record the port’s internal opening dimensions and length, along with any bends or changes in cross-section. Port area and length affect tuning; a poorly chosen port can create response problems even when the cabinet volume appears suitable. Eminence notes that high tuning can contribute to ringing or a one-note sound, low tuning can produce loose bass, and inadequate port area can create port noise.
Compare the enclosure with the driver’s recommendations
Use the actual net volume and port details to check whether the enclosure matches the exact driver’s recommended design. If the manufacturer gives a range, compare your measurements with that range; if it specifies tuning, compare the ported cabinet’s tuning as well. A box that looks plausible from the outside can still be wrong once internal displacement and port design are accounted for.

For example, Crutchfield’s product page for the AudioControl SPC-10S2 specifies a sealed enclosure range of 0.4–0.8 cubic feet, with 0.6 cubic feet described as ideal. Its ported example is 1.4 cubic feet with a 13 × 1¾ × 22¼ inch slot port tuned to 40 Hz (AudioControl SPC-10S2 specifications). Those figures apply to that model only; they are not general recommendations for other 10-inch drivers.

If wiring was incorrect
Correct the connections and listen again using the same music and listening conditions. Avoid changing enclosure dimensions to compensate for an electrical wiring fault.

If the cabinet volume or port design is unsuitable
Use a cabinet designed for the exact driver, or rebuild the existing one to the manufacturer’s recommended net volume and port design. Do not guess at port length or assume that adding stuffing will fix a fundamentally mismatched box.
If you are considering sealed versus ported
Sealed and ported designs involve trade-offs rather than a universal better choice. Crutchfield characterizes sealed enclosures as generally tighter and more accurate, while ported enclosures can be louder and more efficient but require more careful design. The driver’s own recommendations determine whether either type is appropriate. A sealed box is not automatically a compatible substitute for a ported one.

Crutchfield’s enclosure overview discusses these design trade-offs (sealed vs. ported subwoofer enclosures). Polyester fiber may be used as a build material where appropriate, but it should not be treated as a proven cure for an enclosure whose volume or tuning is fundamentally wrong.
Recheck the result without changing several variables at once
- After correcting wiring or changing the enclosure, replay the same material at a similar volume and with the same amplifier, crossover, and listening setup.
- Listen for whether the original dominant or ringing notes remain, and check whether the bass now sounds more balanced across different notes.
- If the problem persists, revisit the measured enclosure and port specifications, then consider other variables such as placement, vehicle or room acoustics, amplifier settings, and crossover settings.
The right enclosure cannot be selected from woofer diameter alone. Without the driver model and cabinet measurements, there is not enough information to name a specific replacement or conclude that the enclosure is the only cause.
